Trip to the South:
I really enjoyed our trip to the South, though I wish it was longer. Since my professor is from Kairouan, I was very excited to see that city. We only got to spend a few hours in it, but seeing the great mosque was very cool. I do not think we got to fully understand how big it actually is because we did not get to spend much time there. I'd been primed for a very religious and conservative city, but I did not get that vibe from the short visit. Kairouan is definitely different from Tunis; it's more rural and has more religious sites, but the people themselves did not feel too different. Matmata I found to be unlike any other place I'd been before and I enjoyed sleeping in the trogs (though I am not sure I could have done more than one night there). I would have loved to see more of how people live there; since it's so different from where I grew up, I had a hard time imagining living there. Djerba was very laid back and reminded me of islands in Florida where people go on vacation. All of the vendors there thought I was Dutch and made a lot more comments to me and the other girls when the boys weren't around. Djerbahood was absolutely beautiful, as was the beach - it felt like a real vacation. The amphitheater in El Djam was very impressive and I've been to the amphitheater in Arles, France, and the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The town I enjoyed the most was Mahdia. It felt like a very livable coastal town with not too many tourists and nice city culture. I fell in love with the beach there and I had a really great time talking to the scarf makers (they even let me work the loom!). Again, I wish we had more time in the South; I feel like it should have been at least a week long, but nonetheless,  I am very grateful we had the opportunity to visit all of these cities to get a better understanding of Tunisia as a whole.

Djerbahood
Djerbahood.
