Plant of the Day
Wednesday 3 November 2021
At a beautiful historic Japanese-style garden in Hertfordshire, UK, the last of the deeply dissected leaves of Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' (downy Japanese maple, full moon maple) were turning colour and decorating the ground. This small to medium-size tree which will produce a broad crown as it ages. It grows in moist but well-drained soil and the leaf colour is said to be best in partial shade. The Japanese name for this cultivar is ‘Maiku Jaku’ which means “dancing peacock”, the perfect name for these lovely leaves.

У этого красного клёника листочки мелкие, парящие как бабочки. В конце видео, где моя ладонь для сравнения. . . . #лиссабон #португалия #клён #листья #🍁 #lisboa #lisbon #portugal #jardim #gulbenkian #folhas #bordo #downyjapanesemaple #maple #ハウチワカエデ #羽団扇楓 (at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian) https://www.instagram.com/p/B60GQuZplcD/?igshid=u4xt86zon6i5

The autumn colour foliage of Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' (downy Japanese maple, full moon maple) provides a long lasting display. The cultivar name of this large deciduous shrub or small tree refers to the leaves resembling the foliage of the herbaceous plant Aconitum (monkshood). The leaves are rounded, with 7-11 deeply cut main lobes with the originally name being 'maiku jaku', which means ‘dancing peacock’, what a great name!

The maples are still adding to the autumn colours and Acer japonicum 'Vitifolium' (downy Japanese maple) is joining them. This large deciduous shrub or small tree had large leaves which turn purple, crimson and orange. A moist, well-drained soil is needed with the best leaf colour is best in partial shade.
