What is 3D game art?

There are many different elements that separate and distinguish different 3D art styles, including artistic direction, shading techniques, and rendering technologies.

Although all styles of 3D game art utilize three-dimensional models, the style can have an impact that goes beyond aesthetics by altering the type of lighting engine needed, performance on various computers or platforms, and the approach that needs to be followed when designing characters.

The top five 3D art styles

Cartoon

The visual styles of cartoon games are highly recognizable and stylized, characterized by either a dynamic and attention-grabbing aesthetic reminiscent of Sunday-morning cartoons or a playful and whimsical journey through the exaggerated and surreal. During the early stages of technological development, certain games were designed with a simplistic, cartoon-like aesthetic in order to accommodate outdated platforms with limited capabilities. This approach prioritized efficiency over realism, resulting in games that could be produced and played with minimal information.

Nevertheless, in contemporary times, this genre encompasses some of the most potent messages conveyed through unconventional and distinctive three-dimensional art forms. In this context, game developers are afforded the liberty to delve into unconventional and eccentric concepts without being constrained by the need for verisimilitude in lighting and modelling. This absence of limitations has significantly bolstered the advancement of numerous high-caliber games that are prevalent in contemporary times.

Moreover, a significant portion of this genre can be characterized as drawing from the anime and JRPG spheres, given that the majority of games originating from the Japanese game industry fall within this category.

Some examples of popular video games include: Tails of Iron, Minecraft, Dragon Ball Fighterz, and Overwatch.

Realism

The video game industry in the early 2000s exhibited a tendency towards hyper-realism, albeit at times excessive, whereas contemporary video game realism represents a distinct approach to balancing novelty and uncanny elements.

This 3D art style focuses on realistic lighting, environmental effects, and picture-perfect models, and every year developments in graphical technology make the imitation of real life easier and more successful. Which urban areas are discernible on a cartographic representation of the Earth's surface? Celebrities, well-known people, and picturesque settings? You know it. - However, the process of generating lifelike 3D models is not devoid of challenges. The look raises a lot of expectations, and even games with hyper-realistic models may suffer from bad physics, lighting, or other outside influences.

Examples: Insurgency: Sandstorm, Red Dead Redemption 2, Battlefield 1, Crysis 2.

Fantasy Realism

The traditional categorization of art styles has been supplanted by a vast expanse of imaginative possibilities. While games that strive for hard-core realism may offer a sense of familiarity, this aspect may not be as prominent in fantasy games. However, it is important to note that the realm of fantasy is not necessarily centered around realism.

Previously, we have examined the constraints that realism imposes on video games. However, the concept of Fantasy Realism endeavors to navigate around these limitations without disregarding them entirely.

The genre of fantasy realism is characterized by the inclusion of imaginative creatures, science fiction settings that feature interstellar travel, and portrayals of alternate realities that incorporate elements of Steampunk and dystopian themes.

The aforementioned video games, namely Eternal Cylinder, Elden Ring, Skyrim, and Fallo, are popular titles among gamers.

Low Poly/Cell Shading

Gaming engines are capable of operating at higher frame rates and on less powerful hardware while preserving visual quality by utilizing models with relatively flat faces and avoiding the need for seamless blending between objects.

The presence of intricate details and realistic shading does not inherently guarantee an aesthetically pleasing art style, nor does it inevitably result in a dearth of substance and excellence. The Low Poly 3D art styles represent an exemplary manifestation of this phenomenon. Indeed, due to its ability to evoke a sense of action and stylization, certain individuals exhibit a preference for this particular painting style over more realistic ones.

This particular genre affords a degree of embellishment and creative leeway, while still maintaining a shrewd and pertinent representation that deviates only slightly from reality, despite not being entirely reminiscent of games with cartoonish qualities or 3D art styles.

Some examples of popular video games include Divine Knockout (DKO), Borderlands, Okami, and Breath of the Wild.

Hand-Painted

A worldbuilding approach characterized by the incorporation of rounded corners, blending of hues, and a predominant focus on narrative. Several of these characteristics are commonly associated with the development of 3D games through manual painting techniques.

The 3D art genre in question places emphasis on the utilization of vivid, watercolour-esque hues and shapes, often incorporating fanciful and surreal elements in an attempt to transform any digital scene into a bona fide art exhibition. The models and backgrounds present in select independently produced video games of the "artisan" variety are the culmination of the diligent work of enthusiastic artists. The degree of inspiration and caliber often pervades various aspects such as character design, shading, and user interface.

Some examples of popular video games include SpeedRunners, Hades, Spiritfarer, and Hollow Knight.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Ignites Debate Over Most Powerful Nick Character

IGN has revealed that developers Ludosity and Fair Play Labs have secretly been working on Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl: a Super Smash Bros.-style fighting game starring some of Nickelodeon’s best characters.

This is obviously big news for Nickelodeon fans everywhere, as well as those who have been craving a Smash Bros.-like experience and don’t own a Switch, so it’s hardly a surprise that this reveal quickly inspired many of those fans to start a surprisingly heated debate over who the most powerful Nickelodeon character is and who will emerge from this upcoming brawl as the undisputed champion.

While Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl‘s full roster hasn’t been revealed quite yet, here’s a brief list of the playable characters that have been confirmed so far:

So…who you got? That’s the question that’s dividing the internet at the moment, though it’s hardly a surprise that the first-round draft largely consists of the most conventionally powerful Nickelodeon characters. Reptar, for instance, seems to be a popular choice at the moment by virtue of being basically Godzilla. In fact, at least one fan thinks they may have already spotted the move that will put Reptar over the top.

Nickelodeon’s resident superhero, Danny Phantom, is another one of the more obvious choices at the moment. He is, after all, objectively one of the most powerful characters currently in the game (if we’re going off of inherent abilities), and some believe they’ll be able to use Phantom’s powers to bring some Dragon Ball FighterZ-style absurdity to unprepared Lucy Loud mains everywhere.

Powdered Toast Man has certainly captured the attention of a certain group of Nickelodeon fans who fondly remember this somewhat obscure character from his Ren & Stimpy days. While nobody is entirely sure what their (or any other character’s) moveset will look like, the surprisingly popular theory at the moment is that they’ll eventually resemble one of Smash Bros.‘s most consistently dominant fighters.

Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Zim are all also securing high-ranking spots on hypothetical tier lists, but what’s most surprising at the moment is how many people seem to think that Nigel Thornberry is actually the one character who will eventually rule them all.

CatDog is also getting a lot of love, which is particularly surprising given that they’ve never been portrayed as being especially powerful in their show and are not even confirmed to be in the game at this time.

Of course, as long as we’re talking about unconfirmed characters who could potentially dominate this game, we’ve got to talk about Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s Aang: a top-tier candidate for the most potentially powerful fighter from a pure lore perspective.

Whoever you side with in this debate, it’s nice to see the internet come together to celebrate something despite the fact that we all know the most broken character in the final game will probably end up being Rocko from Rocko’s Modern Life or possibly Jimmy Neutron‘s Sheen.

Of course, we’ll all be able to actually settle this debate on the digital streets of Bikini Bottom when Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is released later in 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

hehe, so since im in a video game mood rn and thinking a lot about old video games/video games i love, if you were to ask me “hey ruby!!! what games/sequels/trilogies would you like to see remade???” well, here’s which ones i think should get remade: (this’ll be a pretty long post, so you can just click the link down below if ya want to read the whole thing)

out of any old final fantasy game that should get a remake like the final fantasy 7 remake, if i had to choose one, it would have to be final fantasy 6. that’s just one of my favorite final fantasy games (right up there with final fantasy 7, that is), and like. final fantasy 6 is kind of the perfect bridging gateway game between the fantasy/medieval/middle earth early final fantasy games (from 1-5) to the futuristic/modern/grounded to earth final fantasy games (7, 8, 10, 13 & 15), so like. realistically??? final fantasy 6 is probably one of the only few games i think should get a final fantasy 7 remake-esque remake, and it is one that i think can work in that realistic style compared to something like. final fantasy 9 or final fantasy 4, ngl

super mario rpg, obviously, id love to see that game get a remake. maybe with like, a lot more characters (luigi & wario would work perfectly in there), any content they had to cut out, maybe add more to the game that we didn’t even think of that could work (like, not just story padding, maybe stuff like the koopalings, daisy, wart from mario 2). idk, id just like a super mario rpg remake done in a similar style to the link’s awakening switch remake

despite how important these games are to mario’s history as they are the first original handheld mario platformers, as well as introducing wario, another important mario character, it’s kinda weird how nintendo hasn’t really paid much attention to the super mario land trilogy, or even the wario land series. and while i think a new wario land game will certainly get everybody (myself included) very excited, id also get excited if the original mario land series got an all stars-esque remake. heck, id get excited if all the wario land games got remade too in their own package (like, the mario land trilogy will just have mario land 1, 2 & 3, while the wario land remakes can either start out with mario land 3, or virtual boy wario land, or even wario land 2)

i think the original paper mario trilogy of the 2000s should get their own remake/upscaled ports to the switch as well. stuff like paper mario 64 should obviously get remade from the ground up, while stuff like the thousand year door & super paper mario should get like. upscaled graphics, or even new content (like in the thousand year door, there should be a whole sidequest or extra campaign dedicated to luigi’s own journeys that he goes on at the same time as mario’s, i think thatd b pretty neat & funny)

if any megaman game were to get a remake, i think they should be like. the original zero storyline megaman x games. like, ya know, megaman x1-5. and while ik games like megaman x1-3 already get a lot of love, and megaman x5 doesnt really get as much hatred (i think??? i never finished that game), i think megaman x4 should get a lot more love. not only is it my favorite megaman x game, but like. it has a pretty good storyline, each character gets their own unique story, and like. i just like a lot about megaman x4, i really do, and im sad it commonly gets referred to as the worst megaman x game just because of its voice acting. it gets a lot of flack for its voice acting, and honestly, if the voice acting was just mediocre or average, then i really think a lot more people will appreciate this game. like, in my eyes, if megaman x1-5 got remakes in the cel-shaded rendered style of megaman 11 or dragon ball fighterz, then thatd b cool. id also b down to a new megaman x game too aoisdjfiaos

ok, so, kirby games!!!! ik stuff like kirbys adventure & kirby’s super star got remakes, and while they’re great, id love to see more kirby games get remakes!!! and i got two seperate candidates that’d work. and that first one will be a remake of the “dark matter” trilogy of kirby games. games like kirby’s dream land 2, kirby’s dream land 3, & kirby 64. i think these games are pretty important in the kirby series as not only are these the first instance of the deep lore seen in later kirby games (stuff like return to dream land, planet robobot, and star allies), but like. dream land 2 was the first game to introduce kirbys animal allies, which have become staples for a lot of the kirby games (dream land 3, wow, thats all i could really think of oasidjfio). so like, yea!!! thatd b pretty epic

another kirby “trilogy” id love to see get remade or even get remasters of onto switch would have to be the “return to dream land” games. games like kirby’s return to dream land and even the 3ds games that were built off of that: kirby’s triple deluxe & kirby’s planet robobot. i mean, these games are fairly recent, and stuff like return to dream land isn’t even 10 years old yet. but like, i think if these games got upscaled graphics/models & resolution, as well as a bunch of new/cut content, it can also work

oooooooooooooooooo boy, there are a lot of sonic games id love to see get remade considering i think about sonic alot. stuff like sonic 3 & knuckles getting the sonic 1, 2 & cd treatment (get upgraded ports to ios & android, a bunch of new content from sonic mania, etc), as well as said sonic 1 & 2 mobile ports get released to steam or other consoles. itd be cool to see shadow the hedgehog get an upgraded port to the switch for a low price. maybe even see sonic x-treme get completed. but if theres any sonic game id love to see get a full on, worked from the ground up remake, it’d have to be the sonic dreamcast trilogy. and by that, i mean sonic games that were worked off of the same dreamcast technology/engine. games like sonic adventure 1, 2 & sonic heroes. and like, not just stuff like the gamecube or steam ports. i mean, full on remakes with updated models, updated animations & cutscenes, updated rendering, updated voice acting, updated everything!!! with that, id love to see the chao garden get a full blown overhaul, with more deeper chao breeding, more games to play with your chao, more special, unique chaos & even stuff like chao bonuses to the main campaigns. and even somethign that’d be cooler would be like. either free updates or DLC that would add more campaigns to these games with new characters (like the babylon rogues, the classic characters, silver & blaze, etc), and like. i KNOW thats a lot to work on, but like, i think a lot of people would appreciate that. plus, i consider the sonic adventure games would be a perfect introduction to the sonic series, i think these games could get a lot more people hooked onto the series!!! new & old fans alike!!! but, thats just my thots, and this would be impossible realistically. id still want it 2 happen tho 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

while ik everyone wants that gen iv remake, may i recommend a??? gen v remake??? pokemon black & white are still one of my favorite pokemon games, they were very close to me growing up, and i. just have so much goddamn appreciation and love for this game!!!! i think its one of game freaks more underappreciated games, and ik there a ton of people that can agree with me on that!!! it was just such a different and unique experience, with such a deep story, really good and underappreciated and underloved pokemon designs, and just. i’d love it if we really got a gen 5 remake, especially seeing how much game freak has been putting a lot more gen 5 nostalgia in all of their recent products (from a ton of gen 5 pokemon appearing in detective pikachu, to gen v pokemon getting galarian forms in pokemon sword & shield, and even gen v pokemon appearing in a lot more spin offs lately). like. trust me, pokemon black and white isn’t really as bad as people made it off to be in 2011. it really is a modern masterpiece in video games, i really recommend checking it out and begging game freak to give it a remake about as much as yinz have been begging game freak to remake diamond & pearl

obviously mario 64, sunshine, & galaxy 1 & 2 should get full on remakes. yinz know i wanted one this whole year, and im very disappointed we got these barely upgraded ports to switch instead. thats it on that, i dont need to go into further detail

snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)

Super Galaxy Knights Deluxe R: http://sgkdr.thecomicseries.com/ Genre: Action, Comedy Trigger Warnings: Blood, Dismemberment Reasons: A recommendation for @Goobatron . It's my comic. The creator is me. Super Galaxy Knights is a story about Mizuki Sato, who goes on adventures through a strange world, making friends along the way. The dialogue is like... 70% banter, 30% total non-sequiturs. The art style uses 3D models, in like a weird cel-shaded style that's meant to be reminiscent of games like Wind Waker and Dragon Ball FighterZ. And there's also a bunch of animated panels/pages. There's also a ton of really strange characters. Like there's a dude whose power is that he always wins knife fights. There's a wizard who shrinks hot dogs and carries them around in capsules. Etc. One warning - the early pages are a bit rough-looking. Some have been redrawn recently, but others haven't yet, so it can be a bit jarring to go back and forth between styles.

Cap’n Lee (Flowerlark Studios)

Clockwork http://www.clockwork-comic.com/ Genre: Fantasy / Drama CW: Some language and violence Clockwork is a comic about Cog Kleinshmidt, a moody teenager with an uncanny talent for repairing machinery. He feels he’s a nobody, but is swept into the turbulent world of politics, and is forced to learn magic in a world where magic is strictly forbidden. The art in this comic is incredibly polished and lively, and the characters are all instantly endearing. The writing is also top-notch. The first time I read it, I was completely sucked in after only a few pages. It’s currently on hiatus while the creator prepares the next chapter, but it’s well worth the wait.(edited)

Moral_Gutpunch

Micheal Morbius: Freelance Vampire http://freelancevampire.thecomicseries.com/ Genre: Drama, comedy Trigger: mentions of death and violence, talk of abusive relationships, mention of rape. It's all in dialog. Micheal Morbius, from Marvel comics, struggles to adjust to a as normal a life as a vampire can have. He helps a friend get back on her feet, he goes through therapy, and he's visited by Spider-heroes, this time a new one. Meanwhile, a true monster lurks int he shadows. The art isn't good, but the story and dialog are worth it. It's my comic. I hope after I get a few more pages going people will enjoy the story. It's a story I've been wanting to write for ages and I figured I'm not going to write for Marvel anytime soon (yes, I checked copyright law, Marvel allows this). Dedicated to Stan Lee.

Except nobody knows what's happening, the powers the girls get are maybe not of a friendly nature and they wear armor? The escalation of events is suberb. It has a large (and growing) cast, but each character has their own unique personality, making them super easy to follow and love. Ghost Junk Sickness https://www.ghostjunksickness.com/ Genre: action, sci-fi Trigger Warnings: violence, limb loss, death Reasons: There's a lot to be said about this comic! I really like the characters, who are deeply flawed and charming and make a lot of mistakes (the main duo having an especially interesting, yet sorta problematic dynamic). The worldbuilding is interesting and quirky to match. The mysterious bounty The Ghost is a looming presence, and apparently we'll be learning more about them soon. Super exciting and fun action scenes too!

The Second Crimean War is a powerful and fun story in an alternate 1990s decade in Ukraine. The art is black and white and improves in leaps and bounces as you move on in the story! The story itself draws you in from page one. There's suspense, there's (black) humor, there's atmosphere and adventure. Highly recommended if you like war/action/suspense.

Only the first few pages are still up on this tumblr since the official site is down, but all chapters are on the artist's gumroad!

It's an episodic comedy fantasy that goes from page-long gags to full episodes. Reccomended for it's humor and a really fun art style.
