A Carmen Berzatto Universe
A/N: Here’s another request from my inbox - Carmen and Vanessa’s first date! This does not, however, include their first kiss. Feel free to slide more requests for these two my way :) Happy Sunday!
Vanessa Monaghan is the breath of fresh air that Carmen had been gasping for.
Chapter 20: Dancing Bears
Tumblr media
Carmen shifted in his seat at Trunk Noodle. He and Vanessa had exchanged a few texts since meeting at the supermarket last week and while he’d felt confident enough walking her through the neighborhood grocer, he was now sweating bullets.
He’d been stressed all day, from texting Syd to let her know he’d need the night off to figuring out what to wear – and attempting to manage his curls when he desperately needed a haircut.
He’d suggested the restaurant, which was a hole in the wall Vietnamese place in West Loop from which he frequently ordered takeout. He’d arrived 10 minutes early and was greeted by the staff warmly. They knew Carmen as a customer and a chef, and reassured him he always had a table.
At 7 p.m. on the dot, the doors to the restaurant, whose dining room was no bigger than a home’s family room, opened up and there stood Vanessa.
She was better looking than he recalled, and he’d had several days to romanticize her silky brunette hair and long kohl lashes. She beamed a wide smile upon seeing him and he stood, meeting her halfway in a brief, but tight hug before he pulled out her chair.
“It smells amazing in here,” she gushed before even saying hello.
“I love this place,” Carmen nodded, taking his seat. “I didn’t even think to ask if you liked Vietnamese, I just assumed,” he shrugged softly, a small smile on his face.
“I’ve never had Vietnamese,” Vanessa confessed, to which Carmen grinned, “but I have a feeling I’ll like it.”
Their server brought over shots of fresh coconut milk with lime before taking drink orders.
“Why don’t you order?” Vanessa suggested.
“Are you sure?” Carmen asked.
“Our server addressed you by name, so something tells me you’ve been here before – I’ll try anything,” she smiled. Carmen’s heart skipped a beat.
“No allergies?” He asked, closing his menu. He knew it front to back by heart anyway.
“None,” she shook her head. Carmen rattled off four or five dishes when the server returned with their Cokes and she gladly clinked her glass bottle against his.
“So you know what I do,” Carmen cleared his throat softly. “What do you do for a living?” He asked.
“I work in marketing,” she began, crossing her legs. “For a firm called Olson Group downtown, I’ve been there since I left school.”
“So what exactly does that mean? Like commercials?” He asked.
“Kind of – commercial adjacent,” she nodded, “I help clients of all industries, so retail, restaurant, tech and ecommerce with branding, advertising, public relations management, pretty much anything that’s public-facing for their company.”
“Who’s your favorite client?” Carmen asked, ready to listen to her talk about anything. He liked the way her mouth shaped around the words she spoke.
“Right now, probably United Airlines,” she grinned, “they’re doing this retro PanAm-type of throwback branding overhaul and it’s just been a blast going through old school inspiration and updating it to fit 2021, but with a nod to the past.”
“That’s a huge company,” he commented, surprised.
“Our firm does a lot of big clients,” she nodded. “Our headquarters are here, but we have offices all over North America and Europe – I got to do a transfer year in Luxembourg, it was one of the best years of my life,” she grinned.
“Are you from Chicago?” Carmen asked, realizing he was practically interrogating this woman. “Sorry, god, I don’t mean to grill you.”
“I’m an open book,” she laughed. “It’s like a universal truth that people enjoy talking about themselves, right? I am from Chicago,” she nodded, “and I don’t mean Evanston or Rockford, but Chicago.”
“River North,” Carmen nodded.
“Lincoln Park,” she replied. “But I should caveat I went to grade school in Evanston.”
“I see,” Carmen quirked a small, knowing smile. Vanessa couldn’t believe someone with eyes that blue even existed. There was something about the round of his shoulders, prominent nose and jawline that made Carmen breathtakingly beautiful.
“I knew it!” she laughed, “stop judging me!”
“I’m not judging! Just filing it away for later,” Carmen’s first laugh helped draw his shoulders down from his ears.
Dishes started to pile up on their table as plate after plate was delivered and Vanessa excitedly dug into everything she could, enjoying every bite.
“This one’s a little risky,” Carmen said, stabbing a piece of lemon pepper squid, twirling it about in a sauce before holding it up in front of Vanessa without second thought. She gladly leaned over their small table to take a bite.
“It’s so’good,” she moaned. Carmen’s arms broke out into goose bumps. “Everything is so good,” she commented, holding up her fork with excitement at the spread in front of her, deciding on what to eat next.
Carmen explained more and more of what they were eating and they compared the dishes, ranking them as conversation flowed.
“So why did you decide to come back to Chicago? Miss home?” Vanessa asked.
“Something like that,” Carmen nodded, averting his gaze to the table before looking back to Vanessa. He might as well be honest. “I actually hadn’t planned on it, but my brother, who owned The Beef, he died,” he said, picking up his drink. “And he left it to me.” Vanessa’s eyes softened.
“I’m sorry to hear that, Carmen,” she said with heartfelt honestly. “What was he like?” Carmen swallowed softly. People never asked follow up questions, and if they did, it was never that.
“Eccentric in the best way possible,” Carmen recalled the older days, cooking in their family kitchen and how he idolized Mikey growing up – before things changed. “He was a really good storyteller and knew how to bring people together.”
“Is he your only sibling?” Vanessa asked, taking another bite of her spring roll.
“I’ve got a sister, Natalie,” he nodded. “What about you? Only child?” Vanessa threw her head back with a laugh.
“Am I putting off only-child energy?” She asked. “No, I’ve got two sisters – Nicola, she’s 20 and goes to DePaul, and Hannah, she’s in sixth grade.”
“Three girls,” Carmen raised his brows.
“My Dad thinks it’s penance for his wild boy days,” she laughed. “He raised us on his own – he’s incredibly in touch with his feminine side. My mom died a few weeks after Hannah was born, drunk driver accident,” she offered, seeing as Carmen had really opened himself up by telling her about his brother, she felt compelled to do the same.
“I’m sorry,” Carmen winced. He wasn’t sure what was worse, losing someone by their choice, or against their will.
Vanessa simply smiled, reaching across to squeeze his hand on the tabletop.
“Do you think we could order more of these?” she held up her fork, which had speared a pork wonton.
“Anything you want,” Carmen said sincerely. He’d serve his heart up on a platter it meant she’d smile at him again.
After dinner was finished, they’d agreed to take a stroll and try to walk off their overstuffed stomachs. The weather was nice enough as Chicago approached the end of summer and they weren’t far from Oz Park, which Carmen learned was one of Vanessa’s favorite parks in the city.
Carmen skirted the side of the walkways that were closest to the street and when a large group of people came by, Vanessa deftly stepped closer into his side, tucking her hand around one of his biceps. His brain shorted at her soft skin pressed against his.
“Oh,” she said softly, pausing in front of the retaining wall of a brownstone where a small bear had been spray-painted just above where the wall met the sidewalk. “I need to take a photo quick,” she said, whipping out her phone and crouching down to snap a picture. “Bears are my favorite animal,” she explained, “which sounds really juvenile, but my sisters and I always send each other pictures when we see them out in the wild.”
Carmen gulped softly.
“Why bears?” He asked.
“It’s actually a story our Mom used to tell us that her mother told her,” she said, stepping back into his side and lacing her fingers with his. Carmen squeezed her hand softly as they began to move forward again. “There’s this belief in our grandmother’s culture that when you pass away, you come back reincarnated as an animal, and everyone wants to be a bear because they’re the king of the animal kingdom,” she explained. “So when people pass, they come back to the world as an animal and those that are bears are so happy, they dance,” she laughed. “I don’t know, it sounds silly, but it’s always stuck with us.”
Carmen paused, gently tugging Vanessa’s hand so she’d step closer to him.
“It’s not silly,” he assured. “It actually makes more sense than most things people have said to me about the afterlife – thank you for sharing that with me.”
“Carmen?” Vanessa asked as they continued their way toward Oz Park. He looked over at her, not minding when an errant curl flopped onto his forehead. “I know our first date isn’t over, but I’d really like to go on a second date.”
“Me too.”

The Farmers Market - Ethan Hunt x Julia
Summary: Julia and Ethan decide to visit a local farmers market. Lots of fluff and sweet stuff <3
A/N: Hello hotties, your girl is back with a fic! This one isn't incredibly long, but I had so much fun writing it! I love Ethan and Julia so much. This story comes from a request about Ethan and Julia asked by the incredible @skinnycruise -I hope you like it! I saw that selfie of Ethan and Julia last week and I couldn't not write about them 🥹 xoxo mac
Word Count: 1.4k
Tumblr media
With the warm breeze of May fresh upon the horizon, it seemed like spring was gracing the seaside city of Boston with longer days of sun and warmer weather. With the arrival of spring meant the arrival of another popular attraction; the farmers market.
The first weekend in May, farmers from the surrounding area of the city would bring in their vegetables and produce and set up a market in one of the downtown parks.
Standing in the kitchen, drinking a cup of warm vanilla coffee was, Julia, when the idea of the farmers market popped into her mind for no particular reason. She wasn't too sure why the idea of the farmers market popped into her mind, but the more she thought of it, she thought that it might be fun to go. Julia didn't go too often as it was much easier to just pick up groceries on the way home from the hospital after work, but having her husband back home for a while made the idea appealing to her as a fun little date that the both of them could go on.
So, when Ethan, a man who had lacked sleep for the better part of three months while he was away in Europe chasing after terrorists and criminals, caught up on his sleep, Julia brewed a fresh pot of coffee and made some eggs and toast to wake her husband up with. And while he was busy eating and waking up for the day, she retreated to their shared bedroom and put on a white and blue floral print dress that fell just below the knees. Tucked in her dark hair was a pair of white-rimmed sunglasses that matched both the sandals on her feet and the colour of her linen dress.
When she came back out into the kitchen, Ethan, who was perched on one of the bar stools around the kitchen island grinned sweetly at her like no time had passed since the two of them met, all those many years ago when they had locked eyes across a crowded room.
"You sure you wanna go out?" he asked, snaking a hand around her waist, "because i'm just fine here."
Julia chuckled and planted a gentle kiss atop of her husbands dark hair, "we need something to cook for dinner," she said, "besides, it will be fun."
Ethan nodded, linking his hand with Julia's, "give me ten and I'll be ready," he said gesturing to his outfit that composed of an old worn t-shirt and the pair of boxers he had slept in last night, "unless you want me walking around beside you like this?"
Julia rolled her eyes at her husband, and swatted gently at his bicep, sending him on his was to change.
And surely enough, when Ethan emerged back in the kitchen of their apartment wearing a black t-shirt tucked into a pair of dark jeans - his signature pair of aviators tucked within the neck of his shirt - he looked much more put together.
"All ready?" Julia asked him, smiling in his presence.
Ethan nodded, and followed his wife out to the car.
...
The Boston seaside park was transformed from its usual routine of people utilizing the trails for fitness into a venue that was surely captivating. Among the greenery of the spring-time park was countless booths, each with something different to offer.
At some there were freshly-cut flowers, at others there were handcrafted items, and at most there were some sort of produce or home-made goods.
"What are we on the look out for?" Ethan asked, noticing a booth with crochet baby slippers, all in a variety of tiny sizes with a plethora of pastel coloured yarn composing them.
"You think they have those in my size?" he asked, retracting his prior question, gesturing to the slippers.
Julia snorted as they walked past, picturing a light pink pair of slippers drawn to her husbands feet which made the woman running the booth shoot them a dirty look from across the walk way.
"What's so funny Jul?" Ethan asked, his arm draping around her shoulders.
Julia shook her head, "I was just imagining you in a pair of those," pointing to a light pink pair with a comedically large yellow duck crocheted to the toe of it.
"Please Julia," Ethan replied nonchalantly, "have some class. If you're going to day dream about me in a pair of slippers, at least imagine me in the green ones with the trains."
"Hmm," Julia hummed, trying to hide her smile, "I think the ones with the little pigs would really bring out your eyes."
Julia looked to Ethan to find that his gaze was already on her. From his place beside his wife, the nearly-blue, nearly-green, oceanic eyes of Ethan Hunt were pressed so effortlessly to her.
He noted the way she smiled, and the way the corners of her eyes crinkled ever so slightly when she laughed. He had missed this. He had missed the plain, mundane, ordinary, activities of everyday life. He had missed taking morning walks that were rooted in pleasure. He had missed Julia.
Ethan had missed the soft scent of her fragrant soap. He had missed the way her hand was always linked with his. He had missed her.
Ethan Hunt wasn't really a fan of farmers markets, but even the most ordinary of things seemed to be enough for his busy mind and constant drive whenever Julia was around.
"What do you think about these carrots?" Julia asked her husband as the two of them approached a table of hearty produce.
"I think," he said, pausing, unsure of how to really reply, "their carrots."
"They look pretty good? no?"Julia asked, "we could make a salad for dinner tonight?"
Ethan nodded, noticing a booth across the way that caught his eye. "That sounds great," he said, planting a kiss to the back of his wife's hand.
Ethan walked up with Julia to the selection of vegetables and while she was busy looking through a pile of carrots for the best ones, he saw his opportunity.
"I'll be right back," he told her, "Theres something I want to get."
So, while Julia was busy barging for the price of vegetables with a friendly farmer, Ethan was picking though a variety of flowers at one of the booths across the way.
There were tulips, roses, carnations, and other flowers alike, but none of them really seemed to capture the essence of his wife.
"Do you need any help?" the woman behind the table asked, noticing Ethan's puzzled gaze and unsureness in regards to the flowers.
"Yeah, that would be great," he replied sheepishly, "I'm not too sure which ones to get."
"Who are we shopping for?" She asked, smiling sweetly.
"My wife," Ethan said. "Ive been away for work and I want to get her something nice."
The woman smiled gently and then turned around to the buckets behind her to retrieve a bouquet of neatly wrapped irises.
"How do we feel about these?" She asked, "We just got them this morning!"
Ethan examined the beautiful, almost-sheer-like, flowers that were somehow both the perfect shade of blue and purple. These were Julia he thought to himself before nodding his head in approval.
Ethan handed the woman a twenty dollar bill and wished her a good day as he held the bouquet of flowers tightly in his hand.
By the time he got back to Julia, she was just finishing arranging the carrots and lettuce into the tote bag she had brought along with them from the car.
Looking up in Ethan's presence, Julia's eyes darted to the bouquet of flowers in his hand before meeting the eyes of her husband once more.
"Ethan?" she asked, "What's this?"
Ethan smiled, handing her the flowers, "I just wanted to do something nice for my wife."
Julia smiled, bringing the bouquet of flowers close to her chest, "they're beautiful Ethan!" she gushed, "I love you, " she told him, stepping forward, closing the distance between the two of them.
Naturally, his hands found their way around her waist, and before his lips pressed to hers in a kiss that was gentle and sweet, he repeated the words back to her.
"I love you."

National Milk Chocolate Day
Create yummy desserts, from cake to candy bars, with this light and creamy confectionery on Milk Chocolate Day and enjoy its mood-enhancing effects.
How is milk chocolate different from other chocolates? It’s a mix of cocoa solids and either dry or condensed milk. While dark chocolate is traditionally used as a baking ingredient, this lighter version is used to make chocolate candy bars, hot chocolate, and many other delicious desserts.
Did you know that chocolate actually has mood-enhancing benefits? That’s right—chocolate can make you happy! This is due to the fact that it contains a stimulant called theobromine and a compound called anandamide. Now that’s a reason to celebrate!
History of National Milk Chocolate Day
Daniel Peter, the inventor of milk chocolate, was born in the village of Moudon, located in the Canton of Vaud, in beautiful, mountainous Switzerland in 1836. Peter attended school and graduated there.
Later on in life, Daniel Peter had formed a strong friendship with his neighbor, Henry Nestle, who had settled in Vevey, Switzerland, about 1843. Nestle had developed a process to make baby food in which he used what was then called a “milky flour.” It was at this point in his life that Daniel Peter asked himself the question, “Why not try to make a chocolate containing milk?”
This idea stayed with the young Daniel Peter to the point of becoming an obsession with him. He further realized that in order to stay in the chocolate market, already principally controlled by Caliller, Suchard, Kohler, and others, he must produce a new product that would become
pleasing and desired by the consumer. It should be noted by all that since the early 20th century, the countries of Europe have been producing milk chocolate of varying qualities.
It should also be understood that the development of the process by Daniel Peter was created in the community of Vevey, with the Canton of Vaud, in Switzerland, and further pointed out that the first chocolate process, although not milk chocolate, was also created in Vevey, Switzerland, by Francois Louis Cailler, at the age of twenty-three, upon his return to that community from France and Italy in 1819.
Our research has found that National Milk Chocolate Day was started by the Confectioner’s Association.

Calling all chocolate lovers! National Milk Chocolate Day is celebrated annually on July 28. When solid chocolate is combined with either powdered, liquid or condensed milk; it’s known as milk chocolate. Milk chocolate is the most popular member of the chocolate family and with good reason. It’s creamy, smooth and mostly used in candy bars. It is believed that in the mid-1800s, milk chocolate was first created as a beverage in Germany. The first milk chocolate, in the form of a bar that we all recognize today, was created by Swiss chocolatier Daniel Peter while collaborating with Henri Nestlé, the founder of his Nestlé chocolate company.  So if you’re a true chocoholic, get ready to celebrate all things milk chocolate!
National Milk Chocolate Day timeline
1900 B.C.Chocolate is Created
The Olmec, one of the earliest civilizations in Latin America, turns the cacao plant into chocolate.
1689Hans Sloane Popularizes Chocolate Milk
While in Jamaica, Irish physician Hans Sloane adds milk to the ‘chocolate water’ to make it taste better and he brings his discovery back to England.
1828Van Houten Invents Cocoa Pressing
The Van Houten company in Amsterdam invents the cocoa pressing method to produce a light, fluffy chocolate powder that can be easily dissolved in water or milk.
1876What a Concoction!
Swiss chocolatier Daniel Peter adds dried milk powder to chocolate to create milk chocolate.
National Milk Chocolate Day Activities
Eat a candy bar
Bake a cake
Drink your chocolate
Since it's National Milk Chocolate Day, your task is a delicious one. Grab your favorite milk chocolate candy bar and enjoy.  With so many mouth-watering choices like caramel, coconut or cookie nugget — take your pick. Then, spend some time licking the melted good stuff off your fingers.
During the Victorian era, baking a cake was expensive because sweet ingredients like sugar, chocolates and exotic fruits, were considered   as luxuries. Only the nobility and the upper middle class could afford cakes for birthdays, weddings or holidays. As prices dropped, every special occasion included a cake, ideally made out of milk chocolate and stacked in multiple layers.
No kids allowed. Dessert cocktails are perfect when you’re having a chocolate craving. They’re rich, creamy and made to satisfy that sweet tooth. Your favorite alcoholic beverage can be a perfect complement to milk chocolate.
Why We Love National Milk Chocolate Day
It’s the perfect ingredient
It's sweet yet adaptable
Don't believe the negative hype about milk chocolate not being nutritious
Nothing gets us more excited to bake than the idea of whipping up  a milky, chocolaty dessert when we're done. Whether the recipe uses milk chocolate chips or a milk chocolate bar,  a chocolate craving provides the perfect excuse to create a decadent, totally self-indulgent treat. Chocolate pudding, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, a triple-layered cake, whatever, just as long as the main ingredient is milky, silky, chocolate. Don't forget to lick the bowl!
We all know you can eat the sweet treat but did you know there are other uses for it, too? Milk chocolate is sometimes used in products for hair and skin care because it  contains little-known ingredients that are beneficial to your skin. The level of antioxidant compounds in cocoa is higher than that of green tea, black tea or red wine.
Ok, so the nutritional benefits of milk chocolate are not as extensive as those found in dark chocolate. But milk chocolate still has a lot going for it. For example, milk chocolate gives you stamina because it stimulates your brain and your emotions. Also, eaten in moderation, milk chocolate gives our bodies the fat we need in our daily diet.

Drivers – Paper Packaging Market
• E-Commerce Momentum Driving Paper Packaging Market:
The momentum in the e-commerce industry is a significant driver of growth in the paper packaging market. The rise of online shopping has brought about changes in packaging requirements, preferences, and sustainability considerations. As online shopping expands quickly, e-commerce packaging has gained importance within the packaging business. Due to its durable construction and environmental benefits, rigid packaging, like corrugated packaging, is predicted to rule the market. E-commerce allows businesses to reach a global customers. Paper packaging can often meet international sustainability standards more easily than plastics.
According to a survey by Two Sides conducted in the first quarter of 2020, 57% of the 5,700 Europeans polled preferred that online orders be delivered in paper or cardboard packaging, and 57% made an effort to use less plastic packaging. 70% of respondents said they preferred minimal or no packing, and 38% said they would pay extra for a product if it included in environmentally friendly packaging.

• Government Regulation for Reducing Plastics Usage Benefits the Paper Packing Market:
Governments have introduced regulations that mandate higher recycling rates for packaging materials. Paper packaging's recyclability advantage positions it as a favorable option in compliance with these regulations.
Government policy and regulation will continue to be very important in determining the paper packaging market. There are various requirements that must be taken into account, such as The Green Deal, for any business thinking about launching a new e-commerce solution. The plastics packaging tax, which was implemented in January 2021 and is still spreading throughout member states, has the most direct influence on e-commerce packaging in Europe.
Governments often launch public awareness campaigns highlighting the environmental impact of plastic waste. This leads to increased consumer demand for products with paper packaging, seen as an eco-friendlier choice. Many governments have implemented bans or restrictions on single-use plastics, such as plastic bags. These bans create a void that paper packaging can fill, leading to increased demand for paper-based alternatives. For Instance, On January 14, 2022, the Italian Legislative Decree 196/2021 (the "Italian Decree") that implements the Single-Use Plastic Directive ("SUPD") came into effect.

Challenges – Paper Packaging Market
• Sustainability of Raw Materials is hampering the market:
While paper is often considered an eco-friendlier choice compared to certain plastic materials, there are still sustainability challenges associated with its raw materials. sustainable sourcing of virgin wood fiber is essential to prevent deforestation and habitat loss.
One of the primary challenges with paper packaging is the potential for deforestation and habitat destruction. If the demand for paper is not managed sustainably, it can lead to negative impacts on biodiversity, local communities, and the overall health of forests. The paper industry relies on trees as a raw material. Unsustainable logging practices can lead to resource depletion and a loss of biodiversity in forests.
• Limited Shelf Life:
In certain cases, paper packaging might have a shorter shelf life compared to materials with better barrier properties. This can impact the suitability of products with longer shelf lives. Paper packaging may not have the same inherent strength and durability as materials like plastics or metals. Heavy goods require packaging that can withstand the weight and potential impact during transportation and handling. The necessity for paper to package highly heavy goods presents the biggest obstacle for the paper packaging business, which has led to competition from the plastics and metal packaging sectors. In certain cases, consumers might perceive paper packaging for heavy goods as less reliable or protective than alternatives like plastic or metal.

Day 6 Lagos, the one in Portugal!
The sun rises quite late here, but it was light when I left the apartment at 7.50 am to catch the train to Lagos.  The streets were quiet but typically there were men wandering, men drinking beer (I imagine homeless), people walking dogs, a dude who hit me up for 50 cents after I said English! I followed it up with “no coins”!
I thought I might see the Canadians I met earlier in the week, who told me about the monthly market in Lagos, at the train station and I did! I quizzed them about the safety of the cliff walk to Alvor. Apparently there’s the cliffs, then there’s an actual path! They told me about a café in the caves which I will check out.
On board, the ticket inspector came around and I said “it's on my phone” and got ready to show him, then he said “Jody?”…ummm I’m being monitored 😂
The Lagos train station was very clean and so were the toilets, and I didn’t have to pay for any toilets all day!
Lagos was Eva's (of Upwork) first recommendation about where to base myself in the Algarve. It was interesting to compare it to where I am in Portimão. From my experience, a few days in Lagos would be great, but I think it's a bit far from other parts of the Algarve.
I did some research before today, first stop a latte, bypassing the markets, at The Studio Coffee Roaster, they roast their own coffee, it was fantástica at €2.50! I did walk past some market stalls along the river, so many fake cork bags! So that was one leg down the Avenida dos Descobrimentos. I then headed back and passed the mercado / fish markets, then on to the weekly farmers markets, then followed the google directions to the monthly gipsy market. Hmm a row of vans and stalls around an oval, mostly full of cheap crappy kitchen products, clothes, more fake cork bags etc. So a second time back along Avenida dos Descobrimentos, passing a really interesting outdoor women's art exhibition, to a recommended homewares store for authentic Portugese products (I purchased a pottery coffee mug to use now and a cute figurine - pictures tomorrow) and had a wonderful conversation with the store owner, which included a short conversation about Marilyn Monroe! I was keeping my eye on the time as I had a lunch reservation at Tasca do Kiko for tapas (recommended by Eva), before my boat tour; however the store owner indicated that I didn't make it to right markets. So I hightailed it for my second loop. When I got closer to where I was supposed to be and wondered where these bloody markets were I asked some people, they said I was heading in the right direction but it seemed to be back where I’d already been.  I said there were vans in a circle on an oval with cheap stuff and they said “yes, we call it the pants market!” I did see a few stalls with undies 😂
I asked their advice about an alternate lunch spot. I went to Artesão at the Marina for a fresh tuna sandwich and chips (very yummy) and tried to delay my boat trip as the weather had also turned a bit ugly, but too late to change.
I met two young French women who were waiting for the same boat tour. They have just started their 5 month journey around Europe in a van, sounds wonderful, not the "in a van part, although it would be a step up from hostels maybe).
The boat was pretty small, seating about 9+ passengers plus the skipper and some other dude! The skipper announced the waves were about 3 metres high, I thought he was joking!! I'm so pleased I didn't have wine with the fresh/slightly raw tuna sandwich. We headed for Ponta da Piedade, about 2.5km south of Lagos. According to google it's a dramatic wedge of headland with contorted, polychrome sandstone cliffs and towers. On calmer days boats can pass through. Along the way we passed other interesting historic sights, original walls of the old city (the remainder were destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 which I keep hearing about) and Praia da Dona Ana Beach, according to the skipper, named in the top 10 European beaches (not sure what year, as it doesn't seem to be as recent as he suggested).
He also pointed towards Sagres, which apparently has amazing sunsets, I may get there and then 30 kms from Sagres, is the southern most point in Europe.
Then I headed back up Avenida dos Descobrimentos for my fourth leg to visit the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira (fortress) and another recommended homewares shop and GeIícia - Italian Gelato (another three scoops - speculoos (spicy cinnamon cookie), fondente intenso and salted carmal, before heading back to the train station (28,448 steps today).
I will go back to do the walk out towards that rugged coastline from the cliff tops and a set of 230 stairs down to one of the many beaches, and maybe the board walks of Lagos, and potentially get to the tapas spot. The temperature is set to increase to high 20°s next week though!
