Let's talk about Caesar Flickerman.
What's your opinion about him?
Where do you think Caesar falls onto, supporter of the Capitol or belong to the secret rebel line?
What's your favourite interview moment with Caesar? Why do you like this moment?
What do you think happened with Caesar after the war? Do you think he survived?
How do you like the portrayal in the movies from the books?
Do you like Stanley Tucci performance as Caesar?
Spoiler for TBOSAS :
What do you think the relationship between Lucky and Caesar? Actual blood relative? Or something else?
Thank you :)
@curiousnonny
Help I love Caesar Flickerman honestly. He’s such a vibe, I feel like I’d be friends with him, or he’d be the fun history teacher in high school who doesn’t actually teach yk??
I think Caeser definitely supported the rebels, because all those years of interviewing tributes just for them to die has to have taken a toll on him. He got closer with them than anyone else (besides maybe the stylists) in the capitol with only a few minutes of screen time.
I remember Katniss thinking once that he really was trying to bring out the best in each tribute, and trying to help them win in their own individual way. Don’t get me wrong, exploiting kids is still wrong, but I think it was the only way he thought he could help them. I don’t think he would’ve actively supported the rebels, but he would’ve been behind the scenes doing stuff even if not for Coin.
Favorite interview moment has got to be, the iconic, “If it weren’t for the baby.”
Caesar has such natural energy with Peeta, I truly think he knew how angry the capitol would get if he revealed all the details of their love life and made them even more star crossed. I think Caesar was trying to egg him on, and could see what he was getting at, much like in the first book with the crush on Katniss and stuff.
I like it just because wow. Badass, and I’m also biased towards Peeta lol.
I think Caesar probably hid out and died quietly, if he wasn’t immediately killed by either the rebels or the capitol (can’t remember lol). That’s only if he survived, which I don’t think he did. I think he’d definitely be killed by one of the extremes from one of the rebels or the capitols.
The movies did so well with him. His connection with each tribute, his banter with Peeta, all of it. Every line. Perfect casting, perfectly done. Stanley Tucci knocked it out of the park.
Omg!!! Love this last question!!
I feel like probably father/son between them. Lucky had a lot of the goofy energy Caesar has, but Caesar knows how to reel it in, and use it to his advantage more because he’s been around the games and that environment more and knows what the capitol can do. Katniss said he’d been doing it for a long time, I feel like if Caesar did it from Games 45-75, and Lucky 10-44, that’d make sense, or around those numbers.
Thank you for the question @curiousnonny ! As always, feel free to debate but not argue in the replies/reblogs.

"If you watch the original films, it's almost as if Donald Sutherland knew his backstory so well, because you can just see that he's so angry that Everlark is what Snowbaird could have been… in Tumblrspeak, to use the ship names. But, in all honesty, it's like seeing what could have been for him."

i truly disagree with and resent the idea that “everlark is what snowbaird could have been”. rachel zegler said it recently in an interview, and in my opinion it couldn’t be farther from the truth. describing coryo as “a kind eyed blond” is so inaccurate it’s laughable. even in the film tigris says about the hatred in coryo’s eyes. from even the beginning of the ballad of songbirds and snakes novel, we see how highly coryo deifies power. from the start, he keeps up his image as a charming but humble rich boy, regardless of the fact he’s starving and penniless, simply because its the best way for him to maintain control over others.
coryo only ever is kind to others when it is convenient for him - take sejanus for example. his parents gave him gifts and fed him and treated him with great respect (to the eventual point of leaving him their fortune when sejanus dies) simply because coryo pretended to care about their son to receive those effects.
with lucy, it was, to use her own words “written in the stars” that their relationship would end up in ruin, because ultimately coryo was never a person who valued love over power. i stand by the fact that while he may have cared for and loved her, the ultimate truth is that that love did not trump (in coriolanus’ values) the inheritance of power he believed he was owed generationally, from his father and every other snow before him. he would have done anything to get back to where he “belonged”, in the capitol. even had she not run from him, it would have happened a different way eventually.
SHJDJFN STOP PUTTING SNOW ON A PEDESTAL AND SAYING U CAN FIX HIM NO YOU CAN’T HE’S HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! THE WORST!!!!!!
i don’t think any love of his would have led him to a redemption!!

The bear concept for an everlark AU:
Peeta has inherited his oldest brothers restaurant. He’s a recent culinary school graduate with anxiety issues and a newly amputated leg.
His middle brothers works at the restaurant with him but he’s as much of a pain in the ass as cuz is and needs to grow up like yesterday. He’s nearly 30!
Delly is doing admin with Peeta, she’s his life line for the math and legal stuff and she tells it how it is. Best sister ever (they’re not actually related, but they might as well be). She’s also heavily pregnant so she has no time for Peeta’s drama.
Katniss doesn’t work there. She’s lived in the neighborhood forever, Peeta’s had a crush on her forever, but he kind of gave up on trying to talk to her when they graduated high school. He went to school out of state and figured that Katniss would probably get married to someone amazing right away because she’s wonderful. Everyone knows she’s wonderful.
Turns out Katniss is a regular human being who gets played by these trash men like everyone else. She’s unemployed and struggling to keep up with the mortgage payments to keep her parents old but shitty house. Prim just got accepted into medical school, so there’s another hurdle she has to tackle. She runs into Delly at the grocery store and they get to talking, Delly is the friendliest person to ever live after all.
So then later, when it’s front of house training day Delly gets Peeta to come meet the staff she’s hired. He’s had nothing to do with the interview process or anything. Come to find out, Delly hired Katniss as their new hostess. Peeta reverts back to “cat got your tongue” shock and can just barely manage shaking Katniss hand. Katniss worries about the whole interaction for hours later because up until Delly tried to convince her otherwise, she was pretty sure Peeta Mellark had always hated her. He was always staring at her so intensely, like she was a stain on his favorite shirt.
Do with the rest of this prompt what you will 🤭

There had to be social media campaigns for tributes during the hunger games. But instead of it being led by the a Hunger Games network, it’s done by the fans etc.
Like people would have their solo stan teams Cato or Team Glimmer while other might have their favorite districts, like 2 & 4. Then there’s the people who stan the tributes who have little to no chance of winning, but they’re there for the memes and the content.
And you cannot look me in the eye and say that Mr. Peeta Mellark was NOT the meme tribute of the 74th Hunter Games. Like my man’s was pretty handsome, good build, plays it up for the audience and has a decent score. He’d get some fans- but then he drops a love confession in the middle of his interview?? Who the tf does that??
Xitter would eat. that. shit. up. They’d clip it and share it all over Panem web. Team Katniss would go berserk. Someone already started an Everlark account and they’re already at war with Clato fans .
And the the fan edits would roll in and-

I scare easily lol, but how about Hitchhiker from the horror prompts?
Thanks for the prompt, Anon! I know horror isn't the most popular genre in the Everlark fan community, lol, so I kept it pretty mild.
A-Z Horror prompts
(if you like weird stuff, send me a prompt from the list, fam. This is the only one I got so I'm open to more!)
The guy in the interview room says he's Peeta Mellark. He's not carrying identification, and his prints aren't in the state or federal system, so he could be anybody. I don't know if he has a reason to lie. He's young. Looks like shit. My first thought was junkie, but his eyes are clear.
The kid can't keep his leg still. I say leg, singular because he only has the one. I know that detail because my report states that when Peeta Mellark was brought in, the upper right-hand portion of his blood-soaked jeans was torn away, revealing a prosthetic leg attached well above his knee. Now he's in county-issued scrubs. We were out of sweats and T-shirts. He's not under arrest. He has no wounds, no scratches or caked skin under his nails, only the beginnings of a large bruise on the side of his face. And a story that can’t be true. Can it?
"Your leg a recent injury?" I ask, leaning back in my chair.
The kid shakes his head, never breaking stride with the leg. None of that blood on him was his. I know that. I'm just trying to get him talking.
"Childhood cancer. I lost my leg maybe twelve years ago. Good thing, too. If I'd just got the new one attached, I wouldn't have got away tonight. Took a while to get used to it," he explains, patting his left leg. "Wasn't the fastest runner to begin with. My ma says I stomp around like a bear."
He's rambling, but it's understandable if there's an inch of truth to his story. "Lucky guy. Well, Peeta, let's get directly to the point. I looked over the statement you gave Officer Leeg and watched the interview. I have some concerns."
Peeta meets my eye. Despite the jackshit he told Leeg, I'd swear he's not on anything. "I know it sounds crazy---"
"Yeah, it does."
"You should've been there," he said. "Do I have to tell you everything again? I'm, ah, I'm about to pass out or something. Haven't slept much the last few days."
"No, that's alright. Just answer a few questions if you wouldn't mind."
"Do I need a lawyer?" He asks, leg finally stopping.
"It's never a bad idea. But we're not figuring you as the perpetrator at this point. I can call you a public defendant if you want."
"Nah."
"So you told Officer Leeg that at approximately seven p.m., you were out on Highway 12, looking to hitch a ride. Never a good idea, you know that, right?" I add for good measure. "All kinds of things are liable to happen, as you well know."
Peeta shrugs. "I don't have a car. Still have places I need to get to."
"Ever heard of Uber?"
"Got to have money for that or at least plastic. I'm a little short at the moment."
"Seems like your ass just dropped in from Jupiter or something."
He laughs. Starting to loosen up. "No, I'm not claiming an alien abducted me."
"No. No mention of that. Let's go over what happened again, alright? I'll read over things and just ask questions where I feel it's warranted. So you're on Highway 12 with your thumb out when a Chevy truck, mid 80's model, you think?"
Peeta nods. "Tan and white. Decent shape. Some rust."
"And inside the truck's cab were three young men about your age. They had dark hair and an olive complexion, you said."
He squints at me. "Yes, they had a similar look to yours. Do you have many relations around here?"
"A Lot of us look alike in Seamtown. There was probably lots of inbreeding in the old days."
Peeta laughs, and I wink at him.
"Kidding. We're backwoods, but all of our DNA strands don't match. So back to your statement---these fellas offer to give you a ride."
For someone who said he was too tired to relay the whole story again, Peeta dives in head first. "Yep. There was no room in the cab, but the bed was empty. Was riding with them maybe half an hour before things started getting weird. It was really dark before Gale, the driver, flipped the headlights on. Seconds before before he slammed on the brakes. I about jumped out of my skin when something bounced off the front of the truck. I figured it was a deer. Lots of deer on the move around here at night. He didn't give me time to look around, just started arguing with the other two fellas---his brothers I think---before pushing the pedal to the floor. Seemed in a big hurry to get away. Anyway, he cut the headlights off, so I didn't get a look at what he hit with the truck, but whatever it was didn't look like a deer."
Now we're getting to the first interesting part of Peeta Mellark's statement to my officer: the part where it sounds like Gale Hawthorne (it's a small place, Seamtown) and his younger brothers involved themselves in a hit-and-run on Highway 12.
"So we've gone about five or so miles down the road, I guess, when Gale swerves to the side of the road and comes to a stop. 'This is as far as I can take you,' he said. He sounded frantic. 'Hop out.'"
"He never got out of the truck. It's black as pitch by now, and I'm not excited about being left alone on the side of the road, but after what happened earlier, it doesn't take much convincing to get me out of the truck bed. Something feels off, and I'd rather part company with them before anything else goes wrong. If something bad happened, they might be looking to get rid of a witness, I figured."
"So I hop out of the back of the truck and tell Gale thanks. He mutters something, then guns it out onto the road, and soon, the only thing I can make out is his taillights. I was still figuring out what I was going to do next when I heard it. Breaks squealing and tires screaming across the pavement, trying to stop fast. Then, that crashing sound, twisting, popping, tearing metal that makes you sick to your stomach."
I know exactly what he's describing. Been witness to too many accidents to get those sounds out of my head.
"Gale, he'd hit something else, and whatever it was, it was way bigger than a deer. I take off in a dead sprint towards the truck—at least as fast as I can run, thanks to my bionic leg. They're a good two or three miles down the road, but I'm fairly close when, all of a sudden, I'm not running on the road anymore—I'm off the ground. Feet dangling ten fuckin' feet above the pavement."
"I can't remember a whole lot after that, just the explosion when the truck's fuel tank blew. Whatever had me, some kind of huge bird, maybe some guy in a glider or something? dropped me onto the road, maybe 50 yards past the truck. That's when my pants got ripped. I don't know where all that blood came from. I'm sorry. I don't remember everything that happened tonight. Might have hit my head when that thing dropped me."
Peeta's brows knit together as his relay of the events comes to an end. "Chief Abernathy, can I ask you something? That officer I talked to earlier, Leeg? She wouldn't tell me what Gale hit with his truck when I was with them. I don't...I don't think it was a deer. It's driving me crazy. He drove off so fast, I can't help wondering if he hit someone with the truck."
I fold my arms on the tabletop and sigh. No reason to lie. the kid figured it out on his own. "Between me and you, we found a young woman in the location you described to us."
The color drains from his face. "Was she okay?" he asked.
There's a note of hope in his voice I hated to dash. "Nah, kid. She's dead."
His eyes glaze over, and he slumps backward as the reality hits him. "Hers is a sad story," I admit. "Second, hell, make that the third tragedy to happen in that family. The girl's parents died in a house fire. The oldest daughter was asleep in bed at the time. Fire didn't kill her but left burns across her whole body. Lost her mind. The county sent her somewhere for mental treatment---girl claimed she was some sort of mythological bird. Like a phoenix, but that's not what she called it. Happened a dozen or so odd years ago."
"A Mockingjay," Peeta said, turning to face the two-way mirror in the room. "I read something about her somewhere," he added casually.
I snap my fingers. "Yeah, that was it. Mockingjay. The girl disappeared from the facility one day. Katniss Everdeen. The young lady who died tonight was her sister Prim. You wonder how much a person can take without breaking all that death and pain. I don't know what Katniss would do if she found out about her sister's death on top of everything else."
"Maybe she already knows," Peeta says, his leg beginning to shake again. "Uh, confession time, I guess."
He waves his hands. "Not about anything tonight. I was at the facility with her, with Katniss. We kind of had a thing, I don't know. I left right after she disappeared. I didn't go home. I guess I've sort of been wandering around the area, looking for her since."
"Really. Odd that you weren't in our system, then."
Peeta rolled his eyes. "It was a physical rehab place, not drug detox. We weren't criminals. What happened to Gale and his brothers?"
I shake my head. "Gale's in the morgue. One brother with him. One in intensive care."
"Shit," he murmurs, rubbing his eyes. "Christ. Hey, am I free to go?"
I stand. "Free as the wind. Just let us know before you head out of town. Do you have somewhere to go tonight, kid?"
Peeta nods. "Yeah, I think so."
When he stands I pat him on the shoulder. "Thanks again. I'll see if we have something else you can wear."
Within a half hour or so, we had Peeta on his way. I don't know where he planned to go, but I never saw him again after that. It was almost like he'd been plucked off the ground by whatever that thing was and put somewhere safe.

So @kylorexy made a prompt for an Everlark fanfic a while back of a non-hijacked Peeta being rescued and thinking Katniss and Gale were together. I guess no one's done it yet, so I submit to all Everlarkers this Mockingjay AU, where Peeta was not hijacked. 3500 words, rated M:
“He’s waking up,” Haymitch says, grinning. “Come on.”
Katniss can hardly stop herself from imagining the way Peeta will wrap his arms around her, how good it will feel to have his heart beating against her chest, his breath on her neck. And his lips…surely, after all this time, after the relief of the rescue, of being reunited…a kiss wouldn’t be so much to hope for? He'll be weak still, but when he gets better and they have time alone…Katniss begins to feel a rumbling of the hunger she felt at the beach again, the hunger she's been pushing down for weeks now, too devastated to allow herself to feel.
In the hospital room, Peeta is laid out on the elevated bed, dressed in one of the pale green hospital gowns. His hair has gotten long, falling directly over his eyes and down his neck and over his ears. The rest is horrifying. Katniss clasps a hand to her mouth in a gasp when she sees his once strong body so emaciated and small, the bruises and cuts and burns across the exposed skin on his legs and arms that the camera never caught. Tears rise in her eyes, both in pain for Peeta and fury at the Capitol for doing this to him. And guilt she’d let herself be separated from him, that still lingered in her chest.
A nurse gives Peeta oxygen to clear out the gas they used to knock him out in the rescue. When his eyes flutter open, Katniss can’t wait any longer and sits on the bed beside him, taking his hand.
“Katniss?” He croaks.
“Yes, yes, it’s me,” she says, blinking away the tears, then raises their joined hands so she can kiss the back of his and press it to her cheek.
But his eyes roll in the back of his head and he’s out again, head lolling to his side. The nurse hurries Katniss and Haymitch away, rattling on about the injuries he sustained and the rest he needs.
“He’s just recovering, sweetheart,” Haymitch says when he sees Katniss stare forlornly at the door that’s been shut in their faces. “Give him a day or so to get some energy. It looks like they nearly took the life out of him.”
Katniss’s guilt grows at the thought. It was her job to protect him, and she’d nearly gotten him killed. But he was alive. Alive and that’s what mattered.
***
Peeta’s whole body aches. There’s simply too much it’s been through for him to take stock of it all except for the pain. The nurse puts him on morphling while they give him food to build up his weight again, dress wounds, bind his midriff, and scan his brain for damage. Peeta wants to laugh at that. Of course his brain is damaged. He’s not sure he’ll ever sleep again after what he’s seen.
But none of that physical pain compares to knowing he’s here in District 13 with Katniss and Gale. And that they’re together.
Peeta has to admit he’d felt a brush of hope that Katniss had a little bit of attraction toward him after that kiss on the beach. And perhaps some kind of love when even the pictures of her family and Gale hadn’t swayed her from her decision to sacrifice herself for him. At the time, when he thought it could lead to her death, it had been dismal, but in the Capitol it had sustained him. Had given him courage to film that interview with Caesar, to try and guarantee her safety no matter what was going on with the rebellion.
They tortured him, pain and the anticipation of pain haunting his days in his Capitol cell. Then one day they brought in the TV. They showed him footage, from the woods in Twelve, near the fenceline, of Katniss and Gale kissing. Multiple videos of them like this, wrapped up in one another and in a passionate moment. Katniss had told him during the victory tour she’d only kissed Gale once. But then again, there were six months between that and the Quell. And after Gale’s whipping and her obvious choice of him, how could Peeta debate that they’d kissed more? He couldn’t blame her for it. She’d made no real promises to him and their engagement had been nothing more than the specter of a future Peeta had dreamed of. And she had a right to choose, even if it hurt him that he hadn’t been her choice.
Then, when the rebels came to rescue them, between the time the gas made his body unable to move and his brain shutting down in response, he recognized the face behind the gas mask of the man lifting him up. Gale Hawthorne. And someone on Peeta's other side said, “Let’s get him back to your girlfriend.”
Girlfriend.
Katniss.
His last thought before going unconscious.
So somehow the star-crossed lovers bit had faded. Made sense, given how he’d betrayed the rebellion. Now Katniss and Gale had been able to step out from the trees and finally be together.
Peeta knows it’s only a matter of time before Katniss comes back to see him. She was there when he briefly woke up, though he only remembers seeing her tearful gray eyes, her saying something, but he couldn’t remember now. His body had demanded more rest then.
And by the end of the day, after all of the treatments and examinations are over, Katniss comes into his room alongside a nurse, and with joy on her face, she runs to him and falls in his arms.
“Oof!” Peeta says at the impact.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Katniss says in distress and pulls back to examine him, sitting on the edge of his bed. “Did I hurt you?”
“The ribs,” Peeta says, wincing. “They’re broken.”
She grimaces. “I’m sorry, I’m just–I’m so happy to see you again.”
“I am, too.” And his heart hurts more than his ribs.
“I worried I’d never see you again,” she says. Tears come to her eyes again. “I thought–it’s all my fault, Peeta. I’m so sorry. It shouldn’t have been you.”
He doesn’t know what to do anymore to comfort her, now that she’s someone else’s girl. They have no cameras here to send out to an audience, no need to act. It’s only the two of them. Yet she leans into him, eyes expectant. What could she want?
He can only think of one thing. “I don’t blame you. It’s just what happened. Of course they had to bring the Mockingjay out of the arena. You couldn’t be captured by the Capitol. I’m here now, and that’s what matters, right?”
“What happened to you matters,” she says, still hovering nearby him. “It shouldn’t–”
He cuts her off. He might be mad at Haymitch for not telling them the plan, but he knows she had no choice in what happened. She had been ready to die for him. And so had Gale. He still owed them his life and gratitude for that.
“I don’t want to get stuck on the past,” Peeta says. “Just the one last thing about it–please, thank Gale for getting me out. I’ll do it properly once I see him, but I’d like him to know.”
“They said you got knocked out with gas,” Katniss says. “How do you know he was there?”
“I saw Gale before I went under,” Peeta says. Then he swallows. He knows he has to say it, to let her know there’s no ill will between them for what happened. He’s a better person now than on those train tracks. “He’s a good person, Katniss. To risk his life to save me.”
“Ye-es,” Katniss says slowly, then gives him a puzzled look. Maybe she expected a fight, a final declaration of love, or him trying to win her over out of pity for what he’d been through. But Katniss was safe, and that’s all that mattered. She was being loved by the person she wanted and with Peeta back, any guilt she had could dissipate. Their alliance could finally be disbanded peacefully.
***
Katniss is made to double her efforts as the Mockingjay, and she doesn’t have the time she’d like to spend with Peeta. Katniss visits him when she can, when not flown out to a district or in meetings about the war or in training.
He’s somehow the same Peeta, smiling and gentle and funny, though sadder. She doesn’t move to hug him while his ribs are still healing. And he never moves to touch her in any way, let alone kiss her. The fantasies Katniss had allowed herself to want at his return, of him kissing her like they did on the beach, crumble away again. For some reason, now he can't stand touching her, not even to hold her hand. She fears that despite his grace, he blames her for his torture. And isn't that what Katniss realized herself? That Snow tortured him because of what he meant to her? She hadn’t gotten him out soon enough. Not like he would have. She knew had their situations been reversed, he would have roused all of Panem to get her back the minute he woke up on that hovercraft.
On the other hand, Gale has gotten bolder with his touch. His hand often finds its way to the small of her back when navigating new places and he finds reasons to put his lips close to her ear to tell her something when there’s loud noises going on. Katniss jerks back a little when such contact happens, but finds she can’t push him away completely, not when Peeta is suddenly so distant from her.
What if Peeta never wants to touch her again? The thought makes her despair.
After a month, Peeta’s been moved to his own compartment. Usually single individuals had to double up with a roommate, but due to his ordeal and his still-recovering body, they let him have his own space. Even there, without nurses stopping by every few minutes to check on him, he remains reserved. Sometimes she thinks he’s annoyed at her presence, too, as if he doesn’t understand what she’s doing there. He’s still polite, but not warm like he used to be. This isn’t the Peeta whose arms she can fall into anymore, and Katniss feels hollow the longer he pushes her back, her nightmares growing worse. When he avoids sitting with her in the cafeteria during meals, she knows he’s gone from her. He’s seen what she’s always feared he would, that she is selfish and destructive and manipulative.
After a few weeks, Coin calls a strategy meeting and Katniss is told to go. When she’s there, it’s the usual propo team: Plutarch, Fulvia, Haymitch, Gale. And one new member: Peeta, looking so much healthier and stronger than before. He’s beautiful, and it sends an ache to her chest to see him like this and know that she has finally lost the boy with the bread.
She has to take a seat next to Gale.
“We have Peeta Mellark rescued and he’s well on his way to recovery,” Coin says once they’re all seated and the meeting is underway. “So we’re needing to undo the damage caused by the call of the ceasefire. Plutarch, what do we have for that?”
“We’re thinking a propo with Katniss will be most appropriate,” Plutarch says. “Show the star-crossed lovers are on the same side once again. He can say something about continuing to fight for Panem by joining the rebellion’s cause.”
Peeta stares between Katniss and Gale, perplexed. Katniss feels anticipation at such a propo. Would they have to kiss again? Would he hold her? Pathetic as it might be, the idea of playing the lovers again is both repulsive and exhilarating.
As Fulvia begins to talk about locations for such a propo, Peeta blurts out, “I’m sorry, but don’t people know that Katniss and Gale are together now? It won’t work.”
The whole table looks at him, and then Katniss. But she can only see him and everything since his rescue clicks into place. His distance from her, complimenting Gale, the sadness.
“We’re not together,” Katniss says quickly. “I don’t–why do you think that?”
“I saw footage of you two in the woods.” He raises his eyebrows at her, as if this answered anything. Then, as Katniss worries people will think there’s film of her and Gale having sex out beyond the fence or something, he says, “Kissing. You were kissing. A lot of kissing.”
“Only the one time there,” Gale says. “I’d hardly call it a lot.”
Katniss blushes deep. This is all too much for her. She wants to pull Peeta aside and assure him she's not with Gale. That Gale had only been someone to help her make it through him being gone, her best friend and someone she trusted, but romantic? She couldn’t even think of him like that now. And in all of these weeks, she’s still been missing him and wanting him to kiss her, not Gale.
“Likely a fake,” Plutarch says with a wave. “They can do that, in the Capitol and Three. Make it look fairly convincing, too. I imagine someone who had recently been tortured wouldn’t know the difference.”
“But there was that comment, too,” Peeta insists. “When I was rescued. Someone called Katniss Gale’s girlfriend.”
“They were teasing me,” Gale says. “I got a hard time for risking my life to bring back another guy to the girl I love.”
Katniss hardly registers Gale’s declaration of love in this war room, she’s too busy watching what Peeta makes out of this. His face pinches in, as if in denial of what’s being said. He shakes his head and looks down at his lap and Katniss wishes no one else were in the room but the two of them.
Coin rubs her forehead. “Teenage hormones aside, we need a plan for this propo. We have the boy now, and we will use him to our advantage. I want a new propo in two days with the star-crossed lovers.”
They move on to other business, but Katniss is distracted by Peeta, who doesn’t look up from his lap until they’re all dismissed. Out in the hallway, Katniss grabs Peeta’s hand, and some people, including Gale, make note of it. She doesn't care.
“Peeta, can we talk?” she pleads.
“Okay,” he agrees after thinking for a moment.
“Let’s go to your compartment.”
She doesn’t let go of his hand as they make their way to his quarters, sliding the door closed behind them. As soon as it is, Katniss looks into his eyes, wary of her still.
"Peeta." It's all she can say, full of longing and pain and apology.
"It’s okay, Katniss," Peeta says. "I'm okay. You don't have to worry about me."
And she hates that he's still trying to comfort her, to pretend like he hasn't been hurting either when she knows it's not true, when she can feel how he's trying to cover it up and not be someone to bother over. And she hates that his lips are right there and yet they haven't been on her at all since that fateful night at the lightning tree.
"Kiss me," she begs.
Peeta shakes his head, startled. As if he hadn't been listening in that meeting, as if he didn't remember what it was like on the beach.
"You don't owe me anything," he insists.
"Damn it, Peeta! I've been waiting for you to kiss me for weeks now, just do it already!"
This seems to finally get to him, and at last, he's pulling her in, hands on her waist and they're kissing deeply for the first time without an audience.
That feeling, that hunger, from the beach comes back in one large, crashing wave at the touch of his lips. Peeta doesn't stop kissing her, and her body becomes alight everywhere they meet, from their thighs to the way she arches into him as he holds her up, to her hands in his curls and where their lips and tongues caress one another. And most of all, where she feels him wanting her most, and the hunger is neediest there for her, too.
"Katniss," he gasps, then his lips are at her throat and she groans, her legs giving out for a moment when he sucks on her neck at just the right spot. He catches her just before she does, and if she weren't so deliriously happy, she would be embarrassed by how much he affected her.
"Peeta," she says, pleading but she doesn't know for what yet. Him, mostly. Just him.
He reclaims her mouth as he guides her to the bed, the backs of her knees bumping into the frame and she settles down, bringing him with her and not letting go for even a second. They've missed too much time already.
On the bed, her hand finds its way under his shirt and on his back, warm under her palm. The hunger, the demand for more leads her to tug up his shirt and he obliges by taking it off the rest of the way, his chest falling up and down rapidly as he sits back on his heels. Katniss scrambles up and takes her time examining every inch of him for any leftover scars or marks, her hands and then her lips gently going over his skin, from the palms of his hands to his shoulders and chest to his ribs, which he assures her are fine now. He’s still slim, not as built as before, but he’s returning to how he once looked.
He’s alive. He’s safe. He’s beautiful.
And he wants a turn, too, hands cupping her cheeks as he raises her face up and lips kissing her from forehead to mouth to jaw to clavicle, until she's squirming and removing her own shirt and then bra to give him access to where she wants him. This brings him to pull back, staring at her bare breasts before him.
"What is it?" She asks, self-conscious. Was there something wrong with her nipples?
"You really want this?" He asks, voice in awe and doubt. "You want me to…?"
"I want you," she assures him, taking his large hands and placing them over her breasts. Then, to make her point and her decision, says, "And I want only you."
***
She’s soft and warm underneath his hands, and his first thought is that she feels so much different than the dough he used to knead. Firmer, yet still pliant. His brothers used to make jokes, showing Peeta how to handle a “pair of tits” with the dough, laughing about the different sizes, comparing them to girls they knew. Peeta had blushed but been intrigued at the time, although also not completely trusting his brothers to give him solid advice.
Now here she was, his dream girl, encouraging him to touch her. Telling him he was the only one who would be touching her this way. He couldn’t believe it. After the images of her kissing Gale mingled with the electric shocks they gave him, he hadn’t been able to think anything but that Katniss could never want him, want him alone. It all catches up to him with a blow.
“Peeta?” Katniss asks. “You can…do something.”
His hands slide up to hold her face and he kisses her again, because now that he has her, he’s going to take his time with her. And the first thing he needs to do is show her how grateful he is, even if he doesn’t understand why he’s the one she’s choosing. He lays her down on the bed, her legs falling around him as he moves his mouth down to her breast, cupping the flesh there in his hand before lavishing her with his mouth. She gasps as he suckles and licks, then taking his free hand to her other nipple and experimenting with that as his brothers had said. She arches her back now and Peeta says a silent thanks to his dead brothers for not completely screwing him over.
She grabs his head and pulls him off. He worries he’s done something wrong when she’s moving him and saying, “Do the other one.”
He does as she asks, and she sighs, her eyelids fluttering and cheeks red under her brown skin. She looks down at him and smiles, fingers raking through his hair.
“Peeta,” she says, gravity competing with the dreaminess on her face. “I think…I think we need to stop. Before we–I can’t–”
He releases her and lays on his side by her, head propped up in his hand and his other falls to her hip. He’s hard, and he’s sure she felt him and knows it, but she’s already given him more than he could imagine. She stares up at him, then brings her hand to his face and smoothes a thumb over his lips. He’ll never get over how she looks now, her braid messy with fly-aways and gentle eyes and the way her chest moves with her breath.
She’s alive. She’s safe. She’s beautiful.
“Stay with me?” she asks.
He holds the hand she has to his lips and kisses her palm before lowering it and placing it on his bare chest, right over his heart.
“Always.”

Everlark (Catching Fire, Ch. 14)
the parallel between katniss going into the first games to stay alive for prim vs her going into the second games prepared to die to keep peeta alive. like her dying wish is literally to keep peeta alive.
peeta not being able to sleep so just throwing himself into prepping for the games is so heartbreaking. because we don't hear about his perspective but i know his own nightmares returned tenfold. but he didn't share any of it with katniss. he just continued to stay up all night researching previous victors and games.
"because i can't handle the nightmares. not without you" - what katniss thinks when peeta asks why she's not going to bed. i cry. katniss is such a romantic and she doesn't even know it, and peeta telling her to go to bed, like the husband he is (i'm going to make a lot of peeta husband jokes in the next few posts but literally, they act like a married couple so was peeta even lying when he said they were married already in his interview)
peeta finally holding out his arms and give her the comfort she's been internally moping about since they announced the QQ!
i am actually not of the opinion that peeta kisses her neck here. "warmth radiates from the spot where his lips just touch my neck, slowly spreading through the rest of me. it feels so good, so impossibly good, that i know i will not be the first to let go" - i think his lips just grazed her neck during the hug and that was enough to make our feral girl go crazy.
again, peeta's touch/kisses are the only ones that cause warmth to grow in katniss herself (as far as i'm aware - contrasted to the heat that gale had that was only due to the the fire he was standing beside and didn't cause anything in her to want more). like it feels so good, after so long, that she doesn't want to let go. she's been staring at him sketching and fixating on his eyelashes for weeks now, without any particular touchiness between them and she has clearly been missing his affection so much.
and she doesn't care because gale won't see it which is so telling. she's not having conflicting thoughts because her feelings for both are the same - it's because she knows what gale wants and she feels bad that she doesn't really.
"[Gale] won't see it or he'll think i am acting for the cameras. that... is one weight off my shoulders" - he'll think, not he'll know. because katniss isn't acting. like i really think any doubt of her acting is gone at this point forwards in the books. none of their caresses, hugs or kisses are forced or fake from this point (apart from the baby nonsense), and she knows it herself because she doesn't throw in the caveats she did in the first book.
she curls up next to him on the sofa. katniss literally just wants to hold and to be held.
"just like peeta and me, [haymitch and maysilee] do better together"

Does anyone else ever notice how Gale is sometimes depicted in Hunger Games stories as an abusive jerk to Katniss or a controlling manipulative bastard(get real people, like she would let him) OR a jealous prick who sets out intentionally to sabotage her relationship with Peeta? Just to name a few.
Why? To justify Everlark. (Luckily lots of Everlark stories don’t actually do this but I still see it and it’s irritating hence this rant)
Gale is actually written OOC a lot just so people can claim that Katniss belongs with Peeta who is apparently so perfect. And I hate it. That’s right up there with (likely) these same people who completely ignore the fact that Peeta manipulated Katniss into a relationship with him prior to the 74th Games during the interviews. (As I said in an earlier post too, the fact that Peeta kept pressuring her after the rebellion to have kids until she gave in just… that bothers me. But I digress.)
Yes, his feelings were probably genuine and yes, Haymitch also played a role in this but it was honestly a d*ck move for him to pull especially since neither of them told her this is what was gonna happen. So she faked it through the 74th Games. And Snow made her continue after while forcing Gale into the role of her cousin instead, something that neither Gale or Katniss liked, as it made them uncomfortable.
I feel that she was with Peeta at the end because she needed hope and he was almost like another Prim for her. Someone she needed to protect. But what happens once she feels like she can stand on her own again? And don’t even get me started on how wildly Gale’s characterization veers into left field upon arrival at District 13. That whole bit made little to no sense to me. Then there’s the end where Collins writes him off by “he goes to District 2 and no one sees him again”. Really.
Everyone in Twelve also probably believed that Everthorne was endgame as the two were seen constantly together and obviously cared about the other and their families very much. Until the reaping happened. As I said before, Katniss’s true love is her sister Prim but Peeta ultimately was Snow’s choice for her. Katniss’s choice was Gale and she even said so in Catching Fire. “Gale is mine and I am his. Anything else is unthinkable”.
So I hate that Suzanne Collins ultimately didn’t have the guts to follow through with that.
