why am i being made to help? is this not forced labour?
you could say no if you really wanted to, leo. but this is a good way to get you out in the sunlight for some fresh air instead of being locked inside with your research all the time.
i do not need sunlight or air. i am doing this because you are my friend.
aw, that's very kind of you. in that case, i would appreciate your help for just a bit longer.

i always feared this would happen... that they would forget about me...

just looking at them, it was hard not to think they are what i should have been, if i had just been 'normal.' of course, i want the young masters to be able to move on from... from losing so many family members, but this... is not how i imagined it.
i'm sure that's not true, leo...
i'm... tired, mikan. i think i should try to rest now. my research will not wait for me.
well... alright. if you say so.

so, what will you do now?
...i'm going to finish my research. that's all that matters right now.
leo... you know you'll always have a place here, right?

oh hey gloomy. thought you were dead
hey, at least dry off properly or you'll get sick.
i do not get sick.
fine, then you're gonna get my sheets all wet. or you know what, just let me do it for you...

hmm, yes, this will do nicely. you have given me no reason to doubt your abilities, so i am sure this will suit my needs just fine.
[gloomy turns this way and that to get a better look at the cloak. when he’s satisfied, he turns back to face phi.]
the wish was enough for you, i trust? i think our business here is concluded, so i won’t try to overstay my welcome...

my research takes me to various places, so a cloak that can withstand the elements would be most useful, i think. as for what i can give in exchange... i do not have much with me, but i have some rare berries i’ve gotten from a dear friend of mine. they are... wasted on me, i’m afraid.
[gloomy reaches into his cloak to pull out a small bag, inside of which are a few enigma and starf berries.]
of course, if something more is needed, i can see what else i have. a good cloak would probably fetch a high price in a regular marketplace, after all.

[shoulders drooping, gloomy lowers his head, a wistful look in his eyes.]
you may have a point. she was never one to make such big decisions lightly... it’s funny, isn’t it? how our shiny disposition is what caused both of us to leave our families? and to think she would give her own life for someone like me... perhaps it truly is a curse if i bring such misfortune to my family.
[gloomy takes levy’s paw once more, hesitating over his choice of words.]
i... i value your opinion. still, i hope you will forgive me if i should continue to pursue my goals. if there really is a way to reach her, i couldn’t bear to let the opportunity slip from my grasp if there’s anything i can do about it. no matter the price, it is nothing compared to the life she should’ve had in place of mine.
[he lets go of levy then, hooves returning to his lap.]
...maybe i just need to hear it from her directly. if i do, then... i would like to return to my family. even if i can only do so from afar, i would like to watch over the children i left behind. that much i can do for her, as well.

[gloomy meets levy’s gaze, silence filling the space between them as he considers his answer.]
what will happen... well, i suppose that depends on what i find. my life, in many ways, is dependent on it. i wouldn’t even dare think of returning to my old life without seeking the answers to this one. whether it is a gift or a curse to spend eternity undying, unfeeling... such is one of the reasons for my research. as for what i wish to achieve...
[looking away from phi and levy, gloomy briefly raises a hoof to cover his right eye as if in pain.]
perhaps it is direction i seek from the one who gave me this... second chance. to perhaps undo her unneeded sacrifice, ideally, or to carry out her will is the least i can do, if nothing else.
[when he lowers his hoof again, gloomy’s expression returns to its usual neutral, composed state as he turns to face his hosts again.]
forgive me, there is hardly anything pleasant to discuss about myself over tea. i hope that at least satisfies your curiosity. it’s only fair that i answer your questions, after all.
[gloomy casts a glance in phi’s direction before focusing his attention on his teacup.]
i apologize for the wait, phi. i realize it can be... difficult for you to go without the right sustenance for long periods of time. i hope you can humour me a while longer so we can enjoy this tea that levy was so kind enough to make for us.
