A Day of Fallen Night
slow character focused epic fantasy prequel to priory of the orange tree
set during the grief of ages, when Wyrms are on the rise and devastating cities across the world
the teen heir to the throne, a middle-aged tomb keeper at the priory, a young warrior from the north, and princess from the mountains of the east
motherhood, survival, politics
#A Day of Fallen Night#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#very good#i liked it more than priory tho i think that might just be. new things in the same world feelings?#Reading the majority of this while snowed in on a mountain >>>#cool lava creatures. many dragons. good characters#Lesbian hair combing....#it’s basically all the 4 main POVs but there’s one or two other ranodm chapters thrown in? the random sabran chapter threw me off lol#i would have liked Glorian and dumai to meet! What rly came of their dream connection?#(i assume it was actually them?)#Also was it implied that sabran and someone (canthe? Tunuva?) also had one?#tell me more pls#glorian my beloved#my main complaint is that glorian being aroace is like.....vagued about a few times in the beginning then barely at all when the narrative#is directly forcing her to think about it??? yet there's one line about 'if i had a choice i wouldn't choose to have sex at all'#there's how many? 800? pages? and there could have been so much more nuanced introspection about it#obviously I wouldn't want that to be like. telling us she's sex repulsed yet has to have sex for months anyway.#but she could think about the fact that she's sex neutral or whatever for more than 2 seconds#anyway back to general thoughts there are things that made me sad :((((#but also ahhh so good#i'm glad someone said it was slower than priory bc i think that's a good expectation to have#also i will say that like; the wider plot is basically the same? it's just the fact that it follows different characters that makes it a dif#(like obviously. but i mean that a lot of sort of worldbuilding reveals are exactly the same things)

I finished ‘A Day of Fallen Night’ today and I have so many thoughts but, Glorian’s epilogue was the saddest of all. In the very beginning, she swore to herself she would never treat her daughter as her mother, Queen Sabran, did to her. She would never reduce her to her ability to give an heir to Inys. But then the Grief of Ages happens, and Glorian gives birth to her daughter in a cave while Fýredel and the wyverns circle around laying waste to everything. The same day only a little later, it ends. The thing she swore she would never do comes to pass in the epilogue during her confrontation with Prince Consort Guma when he says the foundation of House Berethnet has been built on a lie. She doesn’t even realise she’s ran to the nursery and takes Princess Sabran outside to show her the ruins, and instills the same thing into her, shaking. They’re the chain that holds Virtudom together, and they must always give Inys another daughter to uphold the line and keep the Nameless One at bay.

i'm still unemployed, and yet read only 9 books this month, but here's some more recommendations for february :
a day of fallen night by samantha shannon
it's both a prequel and not a prequel to priory of the orange tree. shannon's world-building and writing style are truly phenomenal and engaging, and despite both books being like 900 pages each, they never feel like a drag. i enjoy the different povs of this book more than priory, where i was mostly interested in ead and sabran, and the plot, and the way the characters connect through it, is exciting, even if i felt it didn't live up to the drama of priory. the character development is So Good (glorian my beloved), there is an array of queer characters (lesbians, asexual, bisexual main characters, as well as inclusivity of trans and non binary), and really it's just an amazing read. how samantha shannon has done it once again i will never understand.
the kingdoms by natasha pulley
my response to natasha pulley books seems to be "confused smiling and nodding and thumbs up." a beautiful read, and i never couldn't follow the plot, even if i didn't fully understand the intricacies/details behind it. natasha pulley excels at writing stories where the queer relationships are a driving force behind the plot, but never feel like the sole focus. and this one is on a ship!
dark rise/dark heir by cs pacat
these are YA (although they don't feel like it) and Totally different from captive prince, both in terms of content and writing style. the plot twists are Excellent, the characters and relationships are so well written and developed, and i can't wait to see how this series ends! i'm in two minds about whether i liked how book 2 ended, so i'm intrigued as to where its going to go!

'Truth is not new. It is as ancient as the ancient of days. The Christ has been made manifest throughout all time in various forms and has appeared as many different people. They stalk through our minds, these people of the past, leaving in our minds the impressions of their thoughts and acts, their desires and aims, their hopes and their faith, and ofttimes their accomplishments and failures. They relive the history of the ages for us, telling and retelling the struggles of mankind, its comedy and its drama. The philosophy and the religion of all eras pass by as in review, and we watch them go from the freedom of inspired thought to their imprisonment in organization and human interpretation. We follow the flight of the universal Light as It inspires the meditations and prayers of Buddha, Shankara, Jesus, John and Paul; we see Its illumination touch the consciousness of these inspired souls; and again we witness the sad spectacle of this Light being chained by men in personalities. What is this Light men seek to personify? Why does not man push aside the veil covering his eyes that he may behold the impersonal Savior and Physician? Purifier of the individual soul and healer of the personal body, glorious Light of all ages-nameless, formless, universal, impersonal - O man, enlarge your vision and behold It here and now. It walks beside you by day and sits by your side at night; on your journey It travels as Guide and Protector; in your work It serves to inspire and direct. Open your consciousness, now, and let this Presence in,' 'The World Is New,' Joel Goldsmith

TWST MC Hybrid AU: Glory the Starborne
Tumblr media
“Who are you? Why are you in my tower?”
~ Gloriane Corbett belongs to @nqchristine22. Originally written in Google Docs with her help in all detail. This is a temporary post until Christine is back to Tumblr.
-Basic Information-
Name:
Glory Corbett (current name) Princess Gloriane Lexington Lunaris (official name)
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: 21st March

Angarika Queendom (original hometown)
The monarchy that rules over the Nether, a dangerous hell-like dimension filled with fire, lava, and fungus-based vegetation. Merlin and Viviane's Tower
Glory's hiding tower is hidden in a large rock pit by a cave. The cave leads out into the forest with its opening hidden by a curtain of plants. She has a personal garden with variety of flower that grows at the base.
.
.
-Hybrid Information-
Hybrid: Starborne
You are a creature from the star (no, not aliens). You can control the stars and send a meteor shower toward your enemies. You heal quicker and launch yourself like a shooting star if you jump really high. Though, you will take damage from that.
Additional Power:  Sundrop Healing
Glory has the power to heal any sickness or injuries, even moral wounds as long as she sings an incantation, a song. This power is rooted in the Immortal King’s blessing to Mother Gothel and her descendants, including Glory, can use this power.

.
.
-Appearance-
Eye Color: Gray
Hair Color: Black
Hair Length: Curled except shorter that reaches down her shoulders
Skin Tone: Pale
Height: 170 cm (5'6 inches)
Weight: 63 kg (140 pounds)
Wardrobe:
In the beginning, Glory wears a simpler outfit. She wears a yellow capelet with white edges underneath a white shirt and yellow vest. Her skirt is yellow with white decorations, along with an apron. She also wears black sandals and gloves.
During her coronation and after, she wears a yellow and pink dress. Her top is black and white with yellow cloth around her chest and off-shoulder pink sleeves. Her skirt is pink underneath the yellow cloth. She also wears a black stocking and yellow high heels. In addition as a starborne, she has a white scarf tied behind her back in a giant bow, along with a pink bandana with a yellow star pin.
.
.
-Personality-
Glory was once a vibrant and loving child who loves her family and her beloved Marc, however, her personality changed when her people killed her family, her best friends, and were about to kill her. Even worse, Marc is part of the Great Myrios kingdom and it broke her heart. As a result, Glory closes her heart to others and vows to retrieve her kingdom through rigorous training with the help of her mentors. She has a difficult time opening up to new people and the only two people that she can trust are her mentors Merlin and Vivien. Although cautious and distant, Glory shows a passionate and gentle side when it comes to her hobbies like gardening and art. She also shows empathy towards nature as shown when she heals a wilted plant or an injured animal. She soon became awed with the world’s inner beauty thanks to Jonah. As the story progresses, she slowly warms up to people like Andie, Jonah, Charlie, Lynette, and Astrid as slowly starts opening up to new people and slowly becomes caring towards her new allies. She’s also inexperienced with her starborne powers but she slowly improves as the story progresses with the help of Merlin and Vivien. She also struggles into coming to terms with her identity when the ghost of her ancestor torments her mentally and emotionally.
.
.
-Background-
Gloriane is the firstborn of the Angarika Queendom and the heir to the throne. While she is a starborne hybrid, she's a late bloomer for she hadn't shown any sign of her power. When she was a child (maybe 12 years old) she was betrothed to a noble human child from Overworld named Marc and would be wed when they're an adult. For now, they would get to know each other.
However, one year later, when Gloriane was 13, the human kingdom, the Great Myrios Empire, invaded the Nether, killing her family and about to kill her. Fortunately for her, her mentors, Merlin and Viviane, help her escaped. Now, the three of them are living together in hiding, until the time is right for Glory to revive her fallen kingdom.
.
.
-Relationship-
Her Parents [Francine and Brenton Corbett]
Glory shares a loving and respectful relationship with her parents but was heartbroken when they were killed by Great Myrios Empire.
Her Grandmother, the previous queen [Gardenia Lexington Lunaris]
Glory shows admiration and respect for her grandmother but was heartbroken by her death.
Merlin Spellman
Merlin has been with her since the day of her birth. Both of them share a grandfather and granddaughter-like relationship as Glory shows great care for him. He, along with Vivien are the only two people that Glory can trust.
Vivien Lakeshire
Like Merlin, Vivien has been with her since birth. Glory and Vivien shared a sister-like bond. She along with Merlin are the only two people that Glory can trust.
Marc Corrin
Glory loved Marc since they were children. Glory loved him for his humor and kindness. However, her view changed when she discovered he’s part of the Great Myrios Empire. As a result, Glory developed a hatred for Marc for taking her family away and vows to take her kingdom back.
Harriet Greene and Zara Fitzgerald
Harriet Greene and Zara Fitzgerald have been Glory’s friends since childhood. However, Glory became devastated by their deaths at the hands of the Great Myrios Empire.
.
.
-Like & Dislike-
Like:
Art and Gardens
Glory loves art and gardens. Gardens like flower gardens, butterfly gardens, etc.
Stargazing
She loves looking at the stars because the stars remind her of her family.
Forest Exploring
She also loves roaming around the forest with Vivien and joking around with Merlin.
Dislike:
Spiders
Glory hates spiders due to her phobia that manifested at a young age.
New People
Ever since her family's death and Marc’s betrayal, Glory seems to show distrust of new people due to her cautious nature. She doesn’t even like intruders and her garden being ruined or invaded.
.
.
-Trivia-
With the amount of free times she have, gardening has become a hobby. She also knows a lot about wild flower and barries, along with flower language. She’s also good in making flower crown in shot amount of time.
She’s a late bloomer in her Starborne power, unlike her Sundrop Healing which she master, making her the healer of the group.
Being a descendant of Mother Gothel, Glory was worry that she would follow her bloody trial in history. That’s why she chose the peaceful ways in combat, with words instead of violence.

A picture on the wall caused Glory to pause.
A framed painting, pretty old, maybe from oil. There were two people in the painting, a standing man and a sitting woman. The man was recognizable, blond hair and poison green eyes, feature looking more like a commoner rather than the god of all hybrid. The wings on the man's back weren't like Charlie's or Jonah's. The wide black ender dragon wings are certainly one of a kind.
But the woman though... Something kept nagging in Glory's mind. She seemed familiar.
The woman was beautiful despite a couple of white strands on her thinning black hair and wrinkles on her face. The glint of mischievousness in her gray eyes, the smug smile, the confident pose, everything about this woman screamed authority and power. A queen.
Glory reached for the painting, feeling the rough canvas when her fingers traced the end of the woman's red dress. She didn't know whether she should feel awed or terrified.
Wait.
Oh.
It clicked. She got it now.
No wonder this woman seemed familiar...
...for it was like looking at a mirror.
The woman had her face. Or was it Glory who has her face?
A name suddenly resurfaces in her memories. A name that she would never have thought would appear again. Now, there was no way she could erase the name 'Mother Gothel' from her mind. There was no way she could forget the first queen of her fallen kingdom.
There was no way she could deny this woman is her ancestor.
She is the descendants of Mother Gothel.
(Princess) Glory, my beloved! Gloriane Corbett belongs to @nqchristine22
Just a small drabble because I'm tired of coding. Plus, testing some water.
It is supposed to be part of TWST MC Hybrid AU. This is still a personal headcanon because Christine still wants Mother Gothel to be a part of Glory's backstory, so some adjustments needed to be made. Oh, yeah. This is also a Minecraft crossover ^^'
So, Mother Gothel is also a hybrid and the founder of a kingdom in the Nether. She allied with Philza Minecraft the Ender Dragon and granted eternal youth. Gloriane is Gothel's descendant (in the fic, she's called the reincarnation), but the Nether Kingdom is ruined after the Hybrid Hunt. When the gang visits The End, Glory is once again reminded of her ancestor, Mother Gothel.
