the strange case of starship iris is a sci-fi fiction podcast about a space smuggler crew that picks up an unsuspecting biologist when an explosion kills the rest of her crew, and then they accidentally go on to become majorly involved in a rebellion against the government. it's probably my favorite series of all time! I've yet to find a good way to summarize it that does it justice but like. it's really really good. you follow Violet Liu (the biologist) as she acclimates to the Rumor crew (the smugglers) and gets a jarring culture shock (because, oops, she was actually on a technically government mission, and now she's stuck on a ship with a bunch of smugglers who don't even trust the IGR as far as they can flip 'em off). I don't want to say too much, because the framing device (and reveal thereof) is one of the coolest concepts I've ever seen executed in any media ever, and I think it's so much cooler if you don't see it coming.

also, it's got a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, incredible worldbuilding (like...there's a whole fictional language. and bits of another one, and bits of a pidgen language too), and has two complete seasons, with the third and final season in the works (any sort of timeline on it to be announced).

This is so funny - Sam went to a viewing of Get Back where Glyn Johns did a Q&A.

Glyn said that when John was with May Pang, Glyn tagged along with Mick Jagger to see them in New York.

As they were leaving John’s house, Glyn told John that he was pissed of with him because John had said that in the press that Glyn was to blame for Get Back/Let It Be being so crap.

John’s response was that Glyn should talk to Paul about that (the implication being that Paul was over the early 70s stuff so everyone else should be too).

I love the idea of that being John’s response to everyone because A) it’s the most amazing cop out in the world and B) the idea, if anyone had actually taken him seriously, of this somehow becoming Paul’s problem with a steady stream of people getting in touch with him and Paul having to explain John’s pov.

Man... The statement in MAG 122 is messing with me in a way very few others have.

From a plot perspective, this is a statement about a victim of the Lonely and/or the Stranger, who believes she is the only real person left in the world. The first half is about her inner feelings of doubt, and the second half is a proper spooky encounter with some puppet man, which confirms that she's surrounded by soulless zombies just pretending to be human. As far as actual supernatural encounters go, this is pretty standard for TMA.

But as the one listening? I'm terrified of the statement giver. See, I know all too well that however a real, normal, human person is supposed to emote... I don't really do that... I don't have that natural intuition; I go about attempting to display the correct responses, mostly getting it right, sometimes getting weird looks or scoldings. Wondering my entire life what it is they have that I do not.

It was just certain people; I watched their reactions, the emotions they didn’t quite get right, and I knew they were a facade. It became like a game to me. Watching out for those… soulless husks. Whether on the bus, the street, or even meeting a client for work, I would look into their eyes for just a second, and see the emptiness inside.

The idea that someone out there knows, that they see through my social pretending, that they can tell I'm "born hollow" and that they're right... that their revulsion is justified... that's scary.

And back in-universe, this statement comes just as John is having to come to terms with his own (in)humanity. More and more, he's looking like one of the monsters now. The ones that terrify, that destroy, that cause disgust and dread, that are fair game to kill. He wants to ignore it; but it's impossible.

(And isn't that sort of knowledge you wish you'd never known just what the Eye is looking for?)
