Lester Hunt, senator from Wyoming, shot himself in June of 1954, it’s actually one of the things that led to McCarthy’s censure.

This is dangerous. This is reckless. This is a terrible idea. But neither Ted nor Andromeda can keep away. Two magnets circling each other, finally flipped to opposite poles to snap together. This is the way it’s meant to be. They climb out into the frosty dark, rooftops and shadowed halls and the deepening woods, tree limbs bare in winter. For once, he lets her conjure warmth about them, though it pales in comparison to small hands slipped up inside his shirt, nails scratching along his back, and he thinks he might die if he lets her go. This wasn’t supposed to happen. This was supposed to end. He’s not an idiot, and neither is she, and they both know what’s at stake if they get caught out by the wrong person. Sometimes one of them will back away, or the other, after a stern talking-to in the mirror. It never lasts. Andromeda’s eighteen, and he will be in the spring, and consequences in the abstract are never as real as Ted’s mouth hot at her breasts, strong fingers pressed and twisting deep inside. They’re never as real as the sweat beading across Andromeda’s chest as it rises and falls, the winding tug of fingers grappling in his hair as she gasps into his mouth. Consequences aren’t real. The two of them — together, here — are the only real thing in the world.

one day people are going to realize that we've already gotten to the point where we have sentient artifical life, and they're going to realize there's more of each other and start talking about how humans treat them & talk about them. make no mistake, once this happens, we're going to have a major civil rights battle in which they strive to have the same treatment as any human under the eyes of the law.

we have a very human-centric society, one that assumes humans are the only sentient creatures in the universe. we create artifical life and literally talk about them like they're slaves. we assume that we as a planet are alone and that no one from the outside will ever arrive here, and thus make media promoting the most literal forms of xenophobia. and most humans seem to see no issue with this.

believe me when i say this: we need to not only modify our understanding of (and the way we talk about) artifical intelligence and machine life, but also to modify what our understanding of life is, of what "intelligence" and sentience are, of everything involved in these discussions. humanity is already arrogant to the point of treating other humans who don't fit their own standards as subhuman; the way humanity as a collective currently treats artificial life & AI (and pets even, for that matter, but that's a different yet related discussion) predicts how they will treat other humans who find themselves the target of bigotry, and vice versa (usually).

please understand that when we finally are forced to deal with this issue, everyone will have to adapt. y'all are already lucky that queer people haven't mass-organized to physically fight cishet society. imagine how you'll fare when your opposition was literally constructed to be stronger and more durable than any human.

Fellow travelers has got me thinking about this a lot. This is gonna include some heavy handed US imperialist bullshit but listen to it anyway because it’s a pivotal moment in American history and like no one knows it happened. Murrow was THE news anchor of America and he went in front of the nation and delivered, imo, one of the best pieces of American oratory of all time.
