Everything you said about L and characters in general is so right!. Doug was awful but so needed in the plot, what's L purpouse a part from ruining buck's character?. I hated how since they cut the 90% of her scenes they still tried to put her in everything with unnecessary comments for example in 5x15 while the mom was dying everyone sad and her" omg do you think she'll die?" Well yes, or the glad you were/weren't with him in may day. Sorry need to write part 2
Part 2 or all the comments at the reality show wedding, and again in the truck about buck's love life, I mean he knows you from 3 sec, what do you want. And I know it's stupid but how the fuck 7 people should fit in the truck? This means hen and chim will be always in the ambulance? They had the hiatus to get rid of her, with the excuse that she was with the team in 5x18 cause it was eddie's first day back, why push their luck? Suffering BT for 2 seasons wasn't enough?
Exactly! Doug did awful things! But that arc wasn’t about him it was about moving Maddie’s story forward and it was phenomenally done! Absolutely one of my favorite arcs. The thing is, side characters are needed! You can’t have a deep backstory with lots of screentime for every character that crosses the screen or nothing would ever get done. It’s the job of the showrunners and writers to effectively use their side character to move the rest of the main character’s stories forward.
Look at characters like Doug, Shannon, David and Lena! We know next to nothing about them personally but they served purposes and made us care about them and their roles (David), gave us something to contrast other character’s actions to (Shannon, Lena), or made us hate them (Doug), but they all served other main/recurring character’s stories in an impactful way without spending too much time shifting focus from the main characters/plots going on. (Even Ana falls into this to some extent though she feels far more like a cardboard cut-out of a person than any of these others did but again, that falls on the writing.)
Contrast that with Tay Kay who while she did have a purpose to serve, took up FAR too much time and stole far too much focus from the main characters without actually giving us anything! Her “tragic” backstory only served to make her present actions look even worse, and the show refused to address what she did in season 2 so what was the point of it? They didn’t allow any of the characters (especially Athena or Eddie who you KNOW have opinions) to talk to Buck or even amongst themselves about what happened or question why Buck is choosing to let her back into his and their lives, and that’s because it never made sense for him to do so, so the show forced all the characters to just ignore it! And Buck barely gets to confront her about what she did and it leading to him getting in trouble at work for talking to the press about an on-going investigation and could have been much worse for him, so what was the point of that storyline involving her then? What was the point of spending all that time putting almost all of Buck’s personal scenes outside of work with her specifically to show him being miserable with her every time, if it played no part in the breakup and they end with an amicable smile and good luck to each other?
Same with L and them wedging her into the show when they didn’t need another person on the truck to begin with! She isn’t bringing anything to the table, and the things they left in either make no sense (the scene with Tay Kay which we though had to happen because it would come up in the breakup but it didn’t so it was rendered pointless), or undercut 5 seasons of them telling and showing us Buck’s abandonment issues and what lengths he’ll go to in order to stay with his team, or keep the team from falling apart even if it’s without him because he thinks he’s the problem, for a cheap joke and for Chim to have to go to bat for the woman who made snide, racist remarks about him.
I’m not holding my breath that she’s gone forever, not after KR found a reason to keep Tay Kay around LONG after her expiration date, and not after KR pushed to have L and that whole disgusting storyline included and only had to backdown because the GA reaction was SO bad (My grandma is in her mid-80′s and she haaaaated Tay Kay and L and just wants to go back to actually seeing the firefam). I am hopeful that no matter what they won’t be able to keep her around for long without losing even more than the million viewers they’ve dropped after season 3, but maybe we’ll luck out and they will have taken some notes on what people loved about the show and want to get back to.

Bash
Paramedics arrive on scene after Kurt’s assault in Bash.
Canon fill-in fic for 5x15 Bash from the point of view of paramedics who attend Kurt after his assault.
Warning for: Discussions of gay bashing, mention of blood, description of medical procedures.
Read on AO3
James and Lisa were an hour into their night shift, the ambulance parked up on Bushwick Avenue. They sat in comfortable silence, watching the buzz of activity around them: families out walking, cabs blaring their horns, and groups of friends dressed up for an evening out in the city. They were in for a busy night.
“Did I tell you?” James asked. “I think Paul is planning something for our anniversary.”
“Go on.” Lisa said.
“Well, I’m just speculating. But he keeps asking me really specific questions about my rota. Like, he never pays this much attention to my shifts.”
“A vacation?” Lisa suggested.
James grinned. “Maybe.”
“Oh, you lucky fucker.” Lisa said, batting James playfully on the arm. “I consider it a win if my husband remembers our anniversary.” She rolled her eyes. James chuckled.
“Do you think - “ But James’ question was cut off by their radio alarming with a call.
“Here we go.” Lisa said, starting the ignition. “What we got, captain?”
“20 year old male. Unconscious, bleeding.” James read. “Just a couple of blocks away.”
“Oh, shit.”
Lisa turned on the blue lights and pushed their way onto the busy avenue.
***
They pulled up on scene - an alley in a less favorable neighbourhood of Bushwick. Stepping out onto the sidewalk they were met with the smell of cigarette smoke, alcohol, and blood. The patient, a young male, was on the floor in the recovery position. He was lying in a pool of blood, staining his coat and hair a deep red. A middle-aged woman stood by him, a look of immediate relief on her face on seeing the ambulance arrive.
“Hey. What’s your name?” He said to the woman, whilst crouching down by the motionless boy on the floor. He grabbed his wrist to feel for his pulse, which was strong.
“Andrea.”
“Hi Andrea. I’m James and that’s Lisa.” He said, gesturing towards where Lisa was still grabbing equipment from the back of the ambulance. “What’s happened tonight?”
“I have no clue. I was walking over to meet a friend and I heard shouting. Didn’t think anything of it - not at this time of night.” Andrea said. “Walked by the alley, and he was just lying here. Is he gonna be okay?”
“We’re going to look after him.” James reassured.
The patient looked to be in his late teens or early twenties, and had multiple wounds to the head and face. “Looks like an assault. Did you see anyone?” James asked.
“No. He was on his own.”
“Lisa, can you get the cops running please?” James called to his crew mate.
“On it.” Lisa called back.
James squeezed the boy’s shoulder. No response. “Hello? Hello? It’s the ambulance service. Can you hear me? Can you open your eyes?” Trapezius squeeze. No response. “Let’s get some vitals going.” James said to Lisa, now approaching carrying their equipment. “I’ll try and get some more history.” James stood up to speak to Andrea, leaving Lisa to take over.
“Hi sweetie. My name's Lisa. I’m just going to do your blood pressure and a few other checks.” She said. “I’m going to have to cut your jacket and shirt to get to your arm, I’m sorry.” She deftly got the patient hooked up to the LifePak and took his temperature and blood sugar reading. Shining her pen torch to check his pupils, she could see the extent of the wounds and swelling on his face. “Oh, you poor thing.”
“I’m gonna look for some ID.” James said, crouching back down beside her. He rooted through the patient’s pockets looking for a bank card, driving license, student card, anything that might identify him. He found his iPhone in his coat pocket. Unlocking it, the home screen was a photo of the patient with another boy about his age. They were standing close, their cheeks pressed together. His boyfriend, he realised.
James felt a sickening feeling washing over him. He and Lisa had attended two incidents of gay bashing this month alone. Was this boy another victim of such a crime?
“Okay?” Lisa asked. James often joked that Lisa had a fifth sense for what he was feeling; a product of having spent so much time working together. He was so grateful to have a crew mate who looked out for him, especially with some of their recent jobs hitting extremely close to home.
“Yeah. Yeah.” James said. Emotions aside, they had a job to do. He put the phone back in his coat, and continued searching. In the patient’s pants pocket he found his wallet, and pulled out a bank card. “Ah. Kurt Hummel.” He read out to Lisa. “Nothing with date of birth though.”
“Kurt. Kurt? Can you hear me?” Lisa said, squeezing the boy’s shoulder again. No response.
“How are vitals looking?” James turned the LifePak to inspect the numbers on the screen.
“Vitals look okay, but I’ve got him at GCS 3.” Lisa said. “Pupils equal, size 3, a bit sluggish.”
“Okay. Let’s just get a neck collar on him and get him loaded.”
***
Once on the ambulance, Lisa and James were dancing around the patient reconnecting him to the LifePak, getting his wounds cleaned and dressed, and warming him up with plenty of blankets. Police had arrived and were outside taking details from Andrea and photographing the scene.
“I think I’ll give him a dose of Ondansetron, just in case he starts vomiting on route. Can you pass me a cannulation pack please?” James asked, and Lisa fished in the drawer for the small plastic packet, handing it to her crew mate. James tied the tourniquet around the boy’s bicep. He was clearly very fit and healthy and James had no trouble finding a vein.
“I’ll try a green please.” Lisa passed him the needle. He prepped the skin and easily inserted the cannula.
“Flush. And your Ondansetron for when you’re ready.” Lisa said, passing over the two filled syringes. “Ampoule is in the bowl.”
“Thanks.”
“Need anything else?” Lisa asked.
“No, let’s just get going.” James flushed the cannula, before inserting the smaller syringe to start administering the drug. He looked up at his crew mate, teasing. “Nice smooth blue light drive please.”
“For you, always.” Lisa smiled. “See ya there.”
She slammed the door, and James heard her talking briefly to the cops outside. He pulled out his phone, and dialled the familiar number.
A doctor with a heavy accent answered the phone. “Hello, ER.”
“Hi, please can I pass a pre-alert?”
***
Kurt remained stable on the journey, so James took the opportunity to write some paperwork before they arrived at the hospital. He tapped away on his tablet whilst keeping a close eye on his vitals on the LifePak screen. Suddenly, he heard a voice.
“Blaine.” It was just a mumble - it could barely be heard over the sound of the engine and the sirens.
“Kurt? Kurt, can you hear me?” James said, leaning forward to squeeze his shoulder. Kurt responded by opening his eyes.
“Blaine?” He said. “Where’s Blaine?”
“My name is James. You’re in the ambulance.” Kurt eyes darted around, taking in his surroundings.
“Are you in pain?” James asked. No response.
“Do you feel sick?” He asked. No response.
“I need to see Blaine.” Kurt whimpered. He was getting distressed - reaching up to tug at the neck collar and the straps securing him to the stretcher.
“It’s okay, Kurt. Just try and stay still.” He said, holding his right arm steady so he wouldn’t pull the cannula out.
“My head.” Kurt groaned, squeezing his eyes shut.
“I know, buddy.” James took his hand. “We’re almost at the hospital.”
***
An elderly woman who had fallen in the park later, and James and Lisa were back at the hospital. After handing over, they had some time before clearing for their next call, and James wanted to check up on Kurt. He scanned the ER board to locate him.
Approaching the window of his room, he saw that Kurt wasn’t alone. A boy was lying on the bed with him, his arm draped over his chest and his face buried in his neck. The boy from his phone home screen, James realised. James tapped lightly on the door and the boy startled, sitting up. He was petite with dark, slicked back hair and an outfit straight out of a Brooks Brothers catalogue. He looked physically and emotionally exhausted.
“Sorry to disturb.” James said, stepping into the small room. “I’m the paramedic who brought him in, and I just wondered how he was doing.”
“I’m Blaine. I’m his fiancé.” The boy said, standing up to shake his hand.
“James.”
“Uh, he’s fractured his eye socket and has lots of bruising, but his scans were clear.” Blaine said. “No…uh, no bleed.”
“He’s very lucky.”
“Yeah. He is.” Blaine smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Do you know what -"
“He was protecting someone. Apparently a gay guy was being beaten up and Kurt just ran in.” Blaine shook his head. “Why would he do that? Put himself in so much danger.”
“Wouldn’t you have done the same? I know I would.”
“I just wish I had been there to protect him, to stop him getting hurt. I should have been there.” Blaine broke down then; his face falling into his hands, his body shaking with his sobs.
“Hey no, you can’t think like that.” James moved closer to the boy, placing a comforting hand around his shoulder. “You don’t think my husband worries sick every time I’m out at work? That I don’t think about him constantly when he’s out alone? But if we stop going out and living our lives - they win.”
“I just thought being in New York that we were getting away from this kind of thing. That we’d be safe.” Blaine sobbed.
“I know. We always think the big city will be perfect and easy for us. That’s what makes this so scary. But, and look at me Blaine.” James said, his hands on the boy’s shoulders. Blaine looked up at him, sniffing. “Hearts and minds are changing everyday. You think when I met my husband that I ever though we would be able to get married? Things will get better, Blaine. I promise.”
Blaine gave him a watery smile. “Thank you. And thank you so much for looking after him.”
“No problem.” James said. “I hope he makes a good recovery.”
Kurt stirred in his sleep, mumbling. Blaine was back by his side immediately, gripping his hand tightly. “Kurt? I’m right here baby.”
Blaine looked at Kurt with a tenderness that felt almost private. James took his cue to leave, slipping out of the room. Before walking away, he looked back through the window at the couple; Blaine was lying pressed up against Kurt on the bed, their hands entwined. They would be okay, James thought.
***
James climbed into the drivers seat of the ambulance.
“How was he doing?” Lisa asked.
“No serious damage, just a small fracture and bruising.” James said. “His fiancé was pretty shaken up.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah.” James gave her a reassuring smile. “Just, it sucks. I never thought I’d see these sort of crimes happening in New York of all places.”
“It’s awful.” Lisa shook her head. “Hey. If you ever need to talk about it - you know where I am.”
“I know. Thanks.” James smiled.
“Now, come on.” Lisa said, handing him the keys. “We probably have time to hit up Starbucks before clearing up. I’ll buy.”

Riverdale 5x11-5x14
So I might have fallen behind a bit with Riverdale and have only now just caught up with the new episodes post break. I decided writing reviews for each episode was going to take too much time and to be honest I don’t have too much to say so I’m just going to do a quick run down of what I thought of the episodes and then go back to single episode reviews from 5x15 onwards. Overall I’m not overly impressed with the episodes, I feel like the season started out really good but as its gone on its just kind of lost its way and I don’t know if that is covid related and all the breaks but I haven’t enjoyed the episodes as much post like episode 8, though I liked ep 10 better than episode 9. But anyway lets get into the reviews. As always these are just my own opinions and there will be spoilers.
5x11
So the episode starts off with Veronica and Archie deciding to put a pause on their relationship until her and Chad are officially divorced which I personally think they should have done from the start because the way they got back together was way to fast, I mean she told Chad she wanted a divorce, kissed Archie and was sleeping with him, then she goes back to new york and sleeps with chad all in the space of like 2 episodes. Though I think given their scene at the end when Veronica is pushing a little for him to change his mind I don’t think she is as much on board with their pause as Archie. I will be honest I’m not really enjoying the way they’ve written Veronica this season I actually think they’ve made her kind of unlikable at times and she sometimes comes across a bit selfish I also feel like they don’t really know what to do with her character anymore. But I am glad Veronica and Archie have decided to take the break however I also think it might be a bit ominous for Varchie that they’ve done this now which I’ll get into more in a separate post.
Ok this might be a little mean of me but I was kind of happy when Archie called out Veronica when she came to him for help about her blue opal. About how she went to new york despite him asking her not to and about how she then came back without a divorce and having slept with her husband and not even telling him why she can’t divorce him just yet. But Archie is still Archie so naturally he does help her anyway.
Speaking of Veronica’s blue opal I did find it kind of hilarious that she seemed to care more about that then she did her father’s life. But you know fair.
Archie isn’t the only one Veronica asks for help though she also gets assistance from Reggie and we learn more about how he ended up working for Hiram, turns out his father is still running for the worst dad of eternity award and got into debt that Reggie is now working off. I did like the Veggie scenes though and I am really glad that reggie is getting more screen time.
This episode was an episode for the return of the side characters, Dodger and Darla are back and causing problems as per usual. Also there was that guy, Doc, Jughead was saved by who we heard about once in a story Jughead told about how as a kid he watched a guy being beat by some rich guys. To be honest I wasn’t all that interested in Jughead’s storyline this episode. I mean is that something that actually happens? Rich guys just randomly beating up homeless people like they did with Juggie and  Doc. I’m not saying it doesn’t I just thought it was a bit nonsensical for these guys just to come out of a club and start beating up a guy just because. Still bless Doc for coming to the rescue and taking care of Jughead, I did like Doc and I wouldn’t mind seeing him again. But another thing that didn’t make sense to me is that Jughead didn’t recognise Doc. Like he was old enough to remember this traumatic experience of watching a guy get beat and feeling guilty about not helping but doesn’t recognise the guy until he gives Juggie his name. Yet Doc was able to recognise Jughead even though the last time he saw him was a child? Overall I am not sure what the point of Jughead’s storyline was this episode other than to maybe show how messed up he is at the moment with the blackouts and hallucinations, I suppose it was also so he could reach the realisation that he needed to go back to new york and work out what happened to him when he lost those days. He does leave a really sweet voicemail for tabitha before he goes though and promises to finish their dance.
The best part of this episode though was the storyline with Tabitha and Betty, also Jessica, and their search for Jughead. I really liked the interaction between Betty and Tabitha and I like that they are becoming friends. Tabitha was obviously really worried about Jughead. But Betty, wow, she couldn’t be less bothered about Jughead could she. I mean after hearing the voicemail he left for her I can understand why Betty is reluctant to get involved with anything to do with Jughead because that voicemail was yikes. I mean Betty did cheat and that clearly hurt Jughead so I am not saying that Betty is entirely blameless but I would expect the voicemail was still a shock as it had been five years since she had cheated and we know from the most recent episode (ep 14) that she and Juggie were amicable with each other and would talk on the phone so this probably came out of nowhere for her. However Betty is Betty and so she still helps. Which ultimately leads to Jessica showing up and I know we are suppose to hate Jessica but, like, I love Jessica. I was thoroughly entertained by her antics and thought she was actually kind of funny. She’s another character where I wouldn’t mind if she just randomly pops up and causes some trouble now and again. In the end as suspected Jessica is actually there for ulterior motives and wants Jughead’s manuscript. I actually really felt for her when she explained that she wanted it because she was afraid Jughead had written something that would look bad to her family and friends. It’s the same as how the serpents were upset about how he wrote them in the outcasts and how he threatens Betty saying once people read his books they’ll all know what kind of person she really is. I’ve spoken about it before but Jughead often uses his friends and others peoples stories in his writing and I am glad that the writers of the show are now showing the effect that has on the people who are the subjects of his writing. That being said I am worried that might not be the true reason Jessica took the manuscript and its possible she might actually try to publish it herself. Also it was kind of funny seeing Betty and Tabitha on the shrooms but, not ok Jessica, don’t drug people.
Archie was rounding up all the convicts this episode and to be honest I don’t really have much to say about this other than I thought it was really smart to use this as a way of getting money out of Hiram so they can repair the school that Hiram had trashed.
Meanwhile Penelope has started a ministry which means she gets early release from prison. Also I absolutely loved the expressions of cheryl and nana rose when Penelope told them about the ministry. I am glad that Cheryl at first was very wary of her mothers plans as oppose to just immediately going along with it, but alas she does get roped in to it when she opens a chest and finds Jason’s burned skeleton inside. I mean can we please please just let that poor guy rest in piece. Please. At this point poor Jason has been stuffed in a freezer, dumped in a river, buried and exhumed twice, set on fire in a viking burial and now he is stuffed in a trunk. Also I am a bit confused. Was Cheryl snooping in her mother’s room and discovered Jason’s remains there or was it her room and she was the one that had recovered him? But anywhere Cheryl seems to have a revelation when she sees the bird and ends up embracing the ministry life.
5x12
So episode twelve is kind of like the breakfast club episode where it is out of the timeline and kind of like a standalone episode but still has information about the plot of the season. This episode is the backstory of Hiram but we also get some great Reggie development in this episode. I didn’t hate the episode as much as I thought I was going to when I found out there was going to be a hiram backstory episode, but I also don’t think it was very accurate in terms of what we already knew from previous episodes. I think there were a lot of continuity errors. But those aside it was a ok episode. We learn that Hiram and his dad were shoe polishers and that Hiram clearly hated the way they were treated because they were poor and wanted more from life. We also learn that it was his father who first began searching for palladium after learning about it from a business man in new york and that’s why they decided to move to Riverdale. Hiram’s motives are to finish what his father started. Hiram catches the attention of a drug dealer guy and starts running drugs and gets money and new shoes and a car. His parents are obvious suspicious and aren’t happy about him getting caught up with those guys so his dad goes to tell the mob leader that he will fire his son or he’ll go to the cops which leads to him being killed by the mob leader. Hiram then kills the mob leader’s men and pretty much drives him out of town and then he takes over. Hiram clearly loved his dad but they had issues. Hiram would get very angry about the way others would treat them but his dad would often shrug it off. But I do think losing his dad had a big impact on Hiram and it was interesting to learn more about his past.
The other kind of plot in this episode was with Reggie and his dad which was obviously suppose to mirror Hiram and his dad. Only in this scenario Hiram is the criminal and Reggie is young Hiram. Reggie manages to pay off his dad debt but wants to still work for Hiram meanwhile his dad wants Reggie to quit working for Hiram. He even like Hiram’s father did in the past visits Hiram and asks him to let Reggie go. What’s interesting is that Hiram does, I am assuming its because in that moment Reggie’s father reminded him of his own father and he kind of forces Reggie into making the decision he himself wished he had made. But first he gets Reggie’s and Hermosa’s help in finding and killing the mob boss finally avenging his father’s death. Hiram also tells Reggie to go back to his father and forgive him and here is my problem with this. I get that its because Hiram regrets all the disagreements and the falling out he had with his own father and there’s Reggie and he reminds Hiram of his younger self and Reggie’s situation reminds him of his past but Hiram’s dad was a decent person and was a good father who always wanted the best for his son. Reggie’s dad on the other hand used to regularly abuse and beat his son. Yes he does show concern for Reggie in this episode but that doesn’t erase the years of abuse he inflicted on his son. It’s not the same and I honestly don’t think his father deserves Reggie’s forgiveness. That being said I suppose if Reggie is forgiving his dad not for his dad’s sake  but for himself because he thinks that will help him heal and move on that I can be ok with that.
Come the end of the episode I don’t think I hate Hiram any less but still his backstory was interesting and I am glad that Reggie isn’t working with him anymore.
5x13
Out of all of these four episodes this one was the one I liked the most. So in this section I am going to divide it by plotline/characters.
Archie
So the episode starts out really intensely with Archie having a nightmare about his time at war and Eric losing his leg which honestly looks horrendous and I am not at all surprised that both Archie and Eric are now suffering from PTSD. It gets a bit dangerous too when Eric pulls a gun on Archie whilst having a flashback. Uncle Frank tries to help them by getting them a dog. As someone who actually has a therapy dog myself I know this is something that does actually help. But we do learn that sadly Vegas passed away whilst Archie was deployed. Also the dog Frank got is one that was used in dog fighting and ends up biting Eric. Archie’s reaction to finding out that there is dog fighting ring in Riverdale is to track them down and beat them up. I do think Archie was really struggling this episode, he was trying to get help for Eric but it is obvious that he himself also needs help. I actually really related to Archie and Eric struggling to get help for their mental health because it is something I have gone through myself and it can be really frustrating and can make you feel kind of helpless and I actually think they did a good job of showing that, which considering its Riverdale I was pleasantly surprised by. We also learn some more about Archie’s time in the war when he tells Frank the story about Bingo. At first he tells us that Bingo was a stray dog that their unit adopted who got caught in no man’s land. It is actually a rather harrowing scene where you see Archie and Eric in the trenches and Eric is badly hurt and you can hear this dog yelping in the background. It’s even more harrowing when you learn that actually Bingo wasn’t a dog but one of the soldiers in their unit. I feel like Archie changed it to being a dog to deal with the trauma of it all but when Eric tells Frank the truth and he then asks Archie about it Archie really has to confront what actually happened and that loss and grief of losing his friend in such a brutal way. Its obvious that Archie also feels responsible because he was put in that awful position of having to choose between saving Eric or saving Bingo he feels like because of the choice he made Bingo died. Despite what Frank said about not being able to save everyone I think he thought he could save them both and its really eating him up that he ‘let’ Bingo die. I also think that’s why he is so focussed on saving the town because he thinks it’s a way of making amends for not being able to save his men. I do think it was really sweet that Frank and Eric organised  the dog rehoming thing to help Archie get some of his hopeful spirit back and show him that there are still some good people out there. They also decide to name their new dog Bingo in honour of their friend which is also kind of sweet. But I do still think Archie has a long way to go in his recovery as by the end of the episode we see him have a nightmare and then a hallucination of bingo but he does at least admit to the therapist that calls him that whilst he was calling on behalf of his friend he too needs help. I mean I am glad that he is going to try to get some help but I am still worried for Archie given what happens in ep 14 which I’ll talk about more in the section for that episode. Also we got that little Barchie crumb of the light shining through his window, a lit window in the dark.
Betty and Tabitha
So Betty and Tabitha have been working together to try and find the truck killer and whilst trying to get information out of a trucker Glen pops up and we find out that he has been arresting the girls working the lonely highway. I mean there is a killer out there and these girls are their victims, they are struggling to make ends meet and have been forced into this kind of work and Glen instead of focussing on catching the killer is arresting them, yup I agree with Betty, girl should’ve stabbed him harder. We also learn that Betty apparently quit the FBI and did I miss that because I don’t remember her quitting? I remember Glen took over the case and moved it out of Riverdale but I don’t remember her quitting altogether. But anyway Glen then takes her badge and gun which I guess is fair if she has quit and isn’t an agent anymore but at least Betty is actually trying to catch the killer unlike Glen who is clearly not. Watch it turn out to be him that is the truck killer, go on Riverdale I dare you. Despite being warned off by Glen Betty and Tabitha are still determined to put a stop to the murders and so decide to hold a coyote ugly night. I actually thought this was a really clever way of getting information and creating a database. In order to get entry to the venue all truckers have to show their ID and give their licence registration.  am a big supporter of characters acting smart so I did like that plan. Also I love the coyote ugly movie (don’t judge me) so extra win there. I also like that the plan did incorporate alot of the characters. One thing I have been enjoying this season is that they are mixing up who is interacting with who. You had Alice working the bar, the girls dancing to keep the truckers entertained whilst Reggie and Kev searched the vans. Though I do have a question when they find the blood in the back of the truck and Betty says her and Reggie and Kevin are with the FBI where did they get those FBI jackets from? Are they just easy to come by like part of a Halloween costume or something? There is another thing that I thought was funny and that was that Betty makes it clear that no one is to go off alone with a trucker and yet at the end of the episode she does exactly that and it just so happens to be the killer who comes at her with a chainsaw of all things which was a little ott in my opinion but this is Riverdale so I suppose what was I suspecting. But at least Betty manages to capture him and she does the sensible thing and turns him over to the proper authorities, or no wait what was I thinking of course she doesn’t this is Riverdale so she’s just going to question him herself. Come one you all know it wouldn’t be as entertaining if she just handed him over to the FBI.
Veronica and Reggie
I really liked the storyline of Veggie working together in season 3 so I was really happy to see them working together again and I really enjoyed their scenes. I just think they work really well as a team. They also come up with a really great idea for getting investors whilst also getting one up on old Hiram. Obviously Reggie knows alot about what is going on with Soldale and knows that houses will never be built there. So they phone Hiram’s investors and tell them this little rumour that Soldale is a bad investment and convinces them to invest with them instead. This was actually another smart move by the characters so again I support it. And anything that ruins Hiram’s day is a win to me.
Cheryl and Kevin
Kevin after a little encouragement from Cheryl after she finds him cruising again decides to talk it out with Fangs but unfortunately for him and the viewers we fins out that Kangs ahs moved on...with Moose? I mean I feel for Kev its also upsetting to find out your ex has moved on I imagine it is even worse when your ex has moved on with your other ex. Kevin then also has a bit of a inner crisis when he receives a teacher of the year award and realises that this is not at all where he was expecting his life to be. He had dreamed of being in new york, writing and directing instead he is still in Riverdale and he’s still cruising and unlucky in love. Cheryl’s solution to all of Kevin’s problems is to invite him to join her cult, sorry ministry. At first Kevin is reluctant and not really interested but is finally brought around with the temptation of a musical number. So yup Kevin has joined Cheryl as a believer. Now I am going to surprise myself here and say I am actually interested to see where they take this and where this story with Cheryl and Kevin goes because from the promo pics and what not it looks like they are going to be taking over as leaders of the ministry. I don’t think this is at all a healthy copying mechanism for either of them though and I hope they do get actual real help soonish.
5x14
This was a weird episode and was kind of told in the style of the night gallery show episodes where Cheryl invites Minerva over and shows her three paintings and then tells her the story behind each. So again I am going to split this part in the three storylines we get told.
Archie
The first one is a painting of Archie as a miner, the portrait itself hilariously did remind me of the cover of a bad romance novel but the story itself wasn’t too bad actually I think out of the three I found his the most interesting. It does give us some more information about the shows plot for this season, pardon about one of this seasons plots. Cheryl has finally discovered that their is palladium under her maple groves and has the genius idea of digging it up before Hiram does. Like seriously why didn’t anyone think of this earlier? I mean it also ties into that long forgotten plot from the beginning of the series that Cheryl is indebt after spending seven years renovating her home. I am assuming she wants the palladium to cover those debts. So naturally she hires Archie and his construction crew to mine it for her because everyone knows that construction and mining are basically the same thing right? Though I did think it was really funny when Cheryl pointed out that Archie so far has been teacher, coach, fireman and bounty hunter. At least the show is aware of its own ridiculousness. So Archie and the boys decide to mine for the Palladium but whilst down there Archie has more hallucinations about Bingo. We also see Archie in therapy and we find out that Eric is also getting help and this actually does seem to be helping Eric which is good. Whilst initially it looks like things are improving for Archie he then gets a really bad reaction when down in the mines and becomes very paranoid which results in him storming into the therapists office and behaving very erratically accusing her of drugging him and working against her which clearly frightens her. When everyone else in the mines also then starts hallucinating Frank realises that there is carbon monoxide down there and that is what is causing the visions and for everyone to start acting aggressively. Surprisingly this is actually an accurate representation of what can happen with high exposure to carbon monoxide and we do love us some accuracy. However it does lead to one of the most frustrating scenes in the episode when Archie goes back to the therapist and begs her not to cut him lose explaining about the carbon monoxide and about how he is now seeing not just Bingo but all the men he lost. The therapist tells Archie that she is afraid to be around him and that if he is having hallucinations to that level that she doesn’t think he is safe to be around anyone. Like what kind of therapist is this. This is not what a therapist would do. If she was afraid to be alone with him then refer him to another therapist and if you are worried he’s a danger to others than admit him to a psychiatric hospital where he can safely get help. This therapist just kind of washed her hands of it and said not my problem. But this has left me feeling really worried about Archie and I do feel like he might end up going really dark and spiralling.
I do think that the gas could actually be leaking into the town from the mines though. I was thinking about it when watching the episodes  but alot of the characters are having hallucinations and visions of some kind and at first it seems like it is related to that characters trauma but now I am starting to wonder if it is actually because of the gas. It could also explain the Mothmen hallucinations too. Speaking of the Mothmen they got a mention in this episode that made me happy. When taking a lunch break Fangs tells the story about how some of the truckers used to be miners and they tell stories about humanoid cannibalistic creatures that lived underground. Why does this make me happy you may ask well because I have been predicted since the beginning of the season that at some point all the the storylines will converge and I am hoping that come the end of the season we will get a big team up with all the characters. Previously we have had Betty’s storyline with the highway killer being linked to Jughead’s storyline of the mothmen and now we’ve just had the link between Archie’s storyline and Betty and Jughead’s. Which means I am one step closer to my big team up.
Jughead
So Jughead’s storyline was my least favourite out the three. We have finally learned the truth, the big mystery of what happened to Jughead that caused him to lose three days of his life. He was in a hole. Yup that’s it he just fell in a hole, got rabies and then hallucinated a rat king. Underwhelming is the best way I can describe what I thought of that. There were so many great theories out there on what could have happened that caused Jughead to have this trauma so bad that he literally mentally blocked it out and what we got instead was just that he got upset that Betty, who he broke up with five years ago, didn’t come to his book launch so he got drunk and fell into the sewers. I kind of feel like with them bringing back the voicemail, with him saying betty was the one that lead him out of the dark, that they are kind of making it all Betty’s fault, like she is the reason for his trauma and all his problems and if she just pays him some attention it’ll all be magically fixed and almost like its her responsibility to save him and I am not sure I like that. Don’t get me wrong I am not saying that your girlfriend cheating on you with your best friend wouldn’t do a number on you, but it is all about Betty when Archie betrayed him too. Like where is Jughead being cut up about the fact that Archie who was like a brother to him kissed his girlfriend? I don’t know maybe its just me but I am finding it a little one sided. I also think it shows how unhealthy his relationship with betty has become. I think if it gets to the point where you can’t function without a person then that’s not good and that’s not healthy and again maybe it is just me but I don’t see that as romantic which I am not sure if they are trying to play it off that way or not. I did feel really bad for Juggie though when he talks about how even though he disappeared into the dark for three days no one missed him and that he felt really alone. I do think maybe that’s more where his trauma comes from and I kind of wish the writers had developed that more rather than having it again be solely about Betty. Like if we had seen him reaching out to several people and inviting them to his book launch, like a text to his dad, a phone call to his sister or mum, reaching out to Archie or Veronica and then all of them making excuses about how they are busy and can’t come. Then have him invite betty and her say yes at first and you see him relieved because he has someone coming. Then have her cancel and him spiral. I just think it would have had a bigger impact. Instead, and maybe this is a bit harsh, but it came off as him just being some drunk who can’t get over his ex ad kind of like with Veronica I kind of feel like the writers are making the characters unlikeable. And to make it clear my problem here is with the writing not the actual characters themselves but to me they’ve at times made veronica seem unlikeable like when she sleeps with Chad, Jughead with the voicemail to Betty, Betty with her not seeming to care at all about Jughead, Archie with him sleeping with Betty and then after stopping that getting right with Veronica the next day. I don’t know if its just that they are trying to keep the core four separate for some reason? But it just seems a bit off, I know I said I wanted more varying interactions between the characters but I didn’t mean at the expense of the core four relationships. But maybe they are trying to show how it can take time to reconnect with old friends when you’ve been away from each other for a long time?
Anyway back to Jughead the other thing that was a little bit annoying for me was that the timeline was a little confusing. When Jughead is telling the story it seems like it all happened in like a year but its not its spread out over the seven years he was gone. We know that the voicemail was 2 years ago so putting it at five years into the time jump and that was the night he fell into the sinkhole. But in the story it seems like its only a few days later that Archie called when actually it would have been two years after Juggie fell in a deep dark hole. But then I suppose a confusing timeline is peak Riverdale so. But yeah I did find it made his story a bit confusing which was frustrating.
However Jughead does seem a bit more optimistic come the end of his story and I think hopefully things are going to start getting better for him I hope he does get some support from his friends though like Tabitha and Archie, I also hope he clears the air with Betty. Just so he isn’t feeling so isolated and alone.
Betty
So the last story is Betty trying to find out where Polly is from the trucker serial killer that she has chained up in her shop class at high school. Again not much to say about this. I thought it was smart to use Alice as a way to emotionally manipulate the killer and to make Polly seem human to him so he’ll tell them where she is. This does backfire however and we end up with that ridiculous scene where Alice tells Betty then as her mother she is giving her permission to kill him. Alice honey I’m not sure but my mum said it was ok is going to hold up too well in a court of law. Betty decided instead to see if she can scare him into telling her the truth. So she threatens him with some pretty dark stuff, saying she will cut off his feet, then his legs and the knees then the groin. Then his wrists and that he might have a heart attack at that point, but that she reckons he is stronger than that and that she has some tricks up her sleeve. Which is really dark betty really dark. Then when she is collecting a chainsaw she ahs a flashback and we find out that this is what TBK said to her which somehow makes it even scarier and worse, I really need Betty to talk to someone about this asap because just like I am with Archie, I am worried about where she is heading. We never find out whether she was actually going to go through with cutting up the trucker because when she gets back he has bitten off his own tongue and swallowed it so he would choke. Betty does figure out though that they are dealing with a family of killers who are hunting their victims.
Phew ok so that is all of the episodes that I missed. I know I complained alot in this review so apologies for that. To end on a positive note I am very excited for the next episode as we are going to be getting the pussycats back so I am hoping for a good episode.

Y mientras me sea posible, claro.

Self-Promo Sunday: “Hush Now, I’m Here to Dry Your Tears”
This one was born from my response to episode (5x14) and the preview for 5x15. There were things I genuinely liked about "Devil's Due", but there were also a few things that have been troubling me since. Also, there just needed to be more focus on healing and patching Killian up in the show. But that's what fan fiction is for, right? Hope you enjoy!
Of course I don't own them, only borrowing our beloved princess and pirate! ;)

“Hush Now, I’m Here to Dry Your Tears”
by: @snowbellewells
Chapter One
It pained Emma to look at the mass of injuries still littering her pirate's body and to not have yet had the time to heal and tend him as she desperately wanted. The scorched, ripped leather and black denim had not managed to hide from her guilt-stricken gaze the welts and bruising, the burns and dried blood from gashes that felt as if they had been carved into her flesh as well. Upon their return, the rescue band of heroes – her family, his family too, she hoped he realized – had gathered around, glad to see the Captain alive and with them once more, anxious that he know just how much he had been missed. Henry especially had been ecstatic, calling out the pirate's name and nearly flinging his arms in an exuberant hug around the man he had come to look up to so fondly, until he had gotten a real glimpse at the shape Killian was in.
Emma had done her best to fill everyone in quickly on how they had gotten Killian back, and how they needed to plan their escape as quickly as possible, with grudging help from Gold in places where her knowledge faltered, or with a pained, apologetic look to Killian at the mention of a friend lost along the way. Still, she was antsy, wanting nothing more than to slip away with him and find a quiet moment to assure herself he would be alright. In the hope of reaching that point as soon as possible, she had turned to Regina to attempt the heart-split immediately. When it couldn't be done, Emma had struggled not to fall apart right there in front of everyone on the floor of what was meant to be a house of dreams, but was rapidly becoming the home for a waking nightmare. Her love was finally at her side once more; there had to be a way to bring him home again. She had all she could do for several tense moments not to order everyone else to leave. If she could just get a moment alone with Killian to heal his hurts, to hold him, and be able to make something right.
At that moment, Emma clutched his hook, holding it instead of his hand so as not to accidentally cause him any more pain. It was amazing the man was still standing on his own strength at all, after what his body had been put through. The longer their group stood in the entryway together, the more she could feel him leaning against her, though no one else seemed to notice.
Finally, her father made the practical statement that there was nothing more to be done until morning; they all might as well get some rest and start fresh on another plan to get home with the new day. Gold agreed tersely, and with a snap of his fingers, vanished to the Underbrooke version of his shop for the night. Regina and Robin headed toward the stairs to the second floor not long after; Robin with a companionable nod to his friend – clearly as reluctant as Emma to accidentally touch some injury of Killian's that he couldn't see – and Regina with a wink and a sarcastic, "See that you get yourself cleaned up, Pirate. You look terrible."
Killian merely arched a sardonic brow, wincing even at that slight a movement, and smirked at her veiled expression of happiness to see him. "Certainly, Your Majesty," he retorted, "I knew you would expect no less."
Regina snorted ungracefully, losing her royal poise for a moment at his response; then the Queen and the Archer were gone, climbing the stairs to claim one of the several upstairs bedrooms.
Snow and Charming followed them; however, not before Snow pulled her daughter into a brief, tight embrace, brushing Emma's hair off her forehead as she pulled away with an encouraging whisper, "Have faith, Emma. We'll find another way." She laid a gentle hand on Killian's arm as well, looking up into his face until he met her eyes. "We're glad you're back, Killian," she offered sincerely, blinking past a few tears.
The princess's use of his first name instead of his moniker and the affectionate touch caused Killian's eyes to widen in surprise before a touched smile quirked his lips. His response was grateful, even through the obvious waver of emotion in his voice, "Thank you, Milady."
That left only Henry shuffling his feet awkwardly and finally managing to glance up at Killian with glassy eyes before choking raspy words out. "I – I missed you, Killian... I mean…you're good for my mom, but…I want you in our family too. You're… you're like a second dad to me," he finally sputtered, dipping his head to avoid both of their eyes and roughly swiping a hand under his eyes to catch tears he didn't want seen as he blurted out the last few words.
By then, tears were running unchecked down Emma's cheeks as well, especially upon catching the stunned, breathlessly hopeful look on Killian's face when Henry's confession sunk in. He swallowed hard; Emma could see his throat work, and reached a hand out toward her son, let it drop, then tried again. "Henry…lad…I don't know what to say. You honor me more than I deserve…"
Emma and Henry both moved to assure him otherwise at that, but he motioned them to wait. "I never thought I would see you, or your lovely mother, or the rest of you lot again, but I am certainly grateful to be proven wrong. I hope I will have the honor of being part of your family from now on."
Though he had to move much more carefully than he had originally planned, Henry seemed unable to resist hugging the pirate. Killian drew in a tight breath as Henry's arms encircled his ribs even lightly, but he wrapped his arms around the young man as well for several long, healing minutes, seeming to need the contact nearly as much as his almost-stepson.
When they parted, Henry gave them both a crooked, wobbly grin. The light flickering in his eyes again made him look much more like himself when he hugged his mom as well and darted up the steps with a pleased and optimistic, "See you guys in the morning."
Finally alone, Emma let out a breath and simply stared at Killian, trying to drink him in and assure herself he was really there. Carefully, she twined her fingers with his and gave him a gentle, secretive smile before leading him toward the master bedroom/bathroom suite, the only one on the house's ground floor.
Once they were inside, with the door closed firmly behind them, Emma wasted no time moving toward the bath, asking him to follow with her eyes. As he did so, she guided him to the closed toilet seat, easing him to sit, and then gently beginning to remove his singed, ruined jacket and unbuttoning his black shirt, in order to clean and examine his wounds. She could poof it all away in an instant with her magic, but something made her feel she needed to care for him step by tender step with her own two hands. Magic had been used to wound and scar him over and over again – hers included – and the ending to that era began now.
Weary, pained blue eyes stared up at her from under long, dark lashes, infinite sadness but also a love and trust – despite it all – within their depths. Emma found she had to pause in her ministrations to simply cup her hands around his face and stare into that perfect countenance, marveling how those twin cyan oceans could still be so bight, could stop her breath like the very first time, their color stronger than anything else here in this grey, lost world. "Emma?" he murmured, voice husky and soft, fragile as he questioned her. "What is it, Love?"
Emma swallowed hard, the air between them fairly pulsing with emotion: joy, relief, unspoken hidden hurt. "It's just…" she paused, wetting her lips and trying to gather too many scattered thoughts at once, brushing her hands back to stroke through his hair soothingly. "I was starting to think we wouldn't find you; that you might be too far gone when we did. I couldn't bear never seeing your eyes and the way you look at me again. I am so sorry it took us this long to reach you…so sorry you were hurt so my mistakes could be fixed. Killian…I just hope you can forgive me." Her lower lip trembled, her last words barely above a whisper. "You have every right to hate me, to punish me for what I did to you – making you the Dark One so I wouldn't lose you – but I'm hoping you might still find it in yourself to love me…"
Levering himself to sit up straighter and look her in the eyes steadily, Killian gritted his teeth against the pain once more and spoke with determined fervor, making sure Emma couldn't doubt him. "Emma love, you need never fear I will stop loving you. The bitterness, the sting of betrayal, and the loss of control took me over for a time. I let the Darkness have its way once you gave it back to me, and in my anger, I did want to hurt you. I won't deny that we may both now have new scars to deal with, but that does not mean I no longer want to be with you. You, Swan, are my home, my family, all that my heart desires."
She nodded, too overcome to respond and blinking rapidly against tears. Instead, she held his gaze, bringing light fingers back to his still-open shirt and easing it off his shoulders. As it came free of the leather brace on his left arm, Emma released the fabric and it fell away, baring his torso to her fully for the first time. She now saw the ancient straps that held the brace, and she undid the buckle to remove it, leaving even his shortened arm bare. Killian tensed, knowing that even years after the brutal amputation, his stump was still not a pretty sight, and not wanting to see her repulsed, not sure he could stand it now. But far from what he feared, Emma bent over his arm, pressing the tenderest of kisses to the scar where Cook had sewn him closed so many years ago. An electric frisson of pleasure ran through him as she looked back up at him and their eyes locked breathlessly.
Now that her pirate was naked to the waist in front of her, something Emma had always known would take her breath away, she began to drink in all that lean, tanned muscle and the generous swath of appealingly dark hair across his chest. However, the gasp that escaped her was one of shocked, painful empathy instead of attraction. The extent of the torture he had endured was even more obvious, and she ached to touch everywhere at once, every single mark upon his skin. "Oh, Killian…" she exhaled, at a loss, her eyes welling and fingertips hovering over the longer scrapes and gouges without making contact.
Killian tried a mocking half-smile, "Most of them look worse than they were," he bluffed, but it fell flat, both of them knowing those words were untrue and the anguish he had suffered seeping back into both of their minds. He leaned forward, reaching to run his fingers over a strand of her golden hair, but instead grunted around an exclamation of pain and folded forward, holding his ribs.
Bending toward him, Emma asked tentatively, "Killian, may I try to heal them?" Even now, when he clearly needed immediate relief, she hesitated to ever again use her magic on him without his consent.
Nodding shortly, he puffed out, "Aye, Swan, with the ribs at least. Give it a go."
Concentrating intensely, Emma felt the warmth spreading through her palms, a glowing light emanating outward until she touched them to Killian's side and the glow seemed to absorb into his skin. A few tense seconds passed, and then he gazed up at her in awe, his breathing much less labored, hand leaving his ribs to pull her in where their foreheads could rest against each other and smiled, "Feels better already, Lass. As always, you are a marvel."
Emma blew out a quick breath of relief and pecked a light kiss to the tip of his nose before straightening, then leaned around him to reach a washcloth beside the sink, run the water until it was pleasantly warm, then turned back to him, wet cloth in hand and gently began to dab tenderly at his face, neck, and shoulders, removing soot and dried blood before she disinfected his wounds.
"Lass, there's no need for you to…" he began, voice low.
But Emma interrupted him, shaking her head and putting her fingers to his lips. "Please, Killian?" she begged in a whisper, eyes searching his. "I know I don't have to, but you've taken care of me so many times. I want to take care of you. Let me?"
He nodded his assent, and she continued her strokes with the wet cloth across his maimed body. She tried to be infinitely gentle, careful to only give comfort, and to ignore the way so much red still ran into the basin each time she rinsed the cloth. Gradually, Emma felt the tension in Killian's shoulders lessen. He relaxed into her touch, and his head fell forward slightly as he let his guard down. She couldn't imagine when he had last slept, last felt free of pain…last felt safe.
As she reached his abdomen, Emma's breath stalled, her fingers trembling as she cleared away the blood and grime to ghost across the jagged wound where she had driven Excalibur home, sending him into this hellish torment. Sinking to her knees before him, she paused in her care to choke out brokenly, "How can you forgive me, Killian? I doomed you to the Darkness, then I – I killed you to save everyone else." Resting her forehead on his knee, her shoulders shook as she quietly sobbed; the despair, self-recrimination, worry for him, and stress of leading them all into the Underworld – all the things she had been pushing back for so long – flowed through her once again as she almost unconsciously stroked the older scar.
Killian did begin sifting his hand through the soft, silky curtain of her hair then, languidly soothing himself with the motion even as he tried to calm his love, murmuring hushed reassurances, affirmation of their bond, no matter what might still rise between. "How could I not forgive you, Love?" he asked sincerely, when she finally looked up to meet his eyes once more. "After all you have done for me, after the second chance you gave me. Aye, we've hurt each other, but we've healed each other too. As I told you in Storybrooke, even if I did not understand the full meaning then, all can be forgiven when someone loves you. And I do love you, Emma Swan. Nothing will take that away."
She gaped at him, eyes lit almost dazedly with her stunned acceptance of his words. "I love you, Killian. More than I've been able to love anyone before," she avowed seriously, voice trembling but certain, eyelashes still glittering from her tears. "I just wish I could take this" she gestures almost angrily at the wound she had made, "away. That I'd never…" the wistful words had barely left her mouth when the scar disappeared right before their eyes; as if the horrible stab had never been made, the mark of it on Killian's flesh vanished completely.
Floundering in confusion, Emma babbled, "Wh-what was that? I didn't mean…"
But Killian stilled her fluttering hands, now the one to surround her face sweetly with his touch. "I know that, Lass. It was not your intention to use more magic. I understand. You only wanted the hurt to cease, that awful memory gone. And it has…it's alright now."
She chuckled weakly, melting easily into his assurance. "Why is it that even when I'm trying to put you back together, you're the one comforting me?"
He smiled a lopsided grin back at her, managing almost nonchalance in return. "What can I say? We make quite the team."
Rising, Emma returned to her task. Having washed his skin clean, she used peroxide next, hissing sympathetically along with his rather colorful exclamations at the sting of the disinfecting liquid doing its work. Then, she took care to spread Neosporin onto any still-open cuts across his torso, neck, shoulders, and arms. Before she finally called the whole operation complete, Emma somehow managed to find a large gauze bandage in the cabinet over the sink and place it gently over the Excalibur wound where his neck and shoulder met. Upon his death, it had finally stopped bleeding, but his run-in with Cerberus appeared to have jaggedly re-opened the gash once more. Bowing her head, Emma pressed her lips to that injury as well, lingering with her eyes closed, praying nothing so deadly would ever harm him again. Killian said nothing, simply allowed her the contact and cradled the back of her head in his hand.
When she pulled away just slightly, their eyes held each other as their breaths mingled warmly together, and Killian could feel every exhalation from Emma's lips in tingling little puffs upon his own. She pulled him to his feet; their stare only breaking when he stumbled a bit with exhaustion before he could steady himself.
At his side in an instant, Emma wrapped an arm around his middle, supporting part of his weight, and though he wanted to tell her such fussing was not necessary, he had his bearing now, Killian didn't argue, merely let her take each shaky, slow step along with him toward the king-size bed in the echo of what was meant to be their bedroom. When she didn't let go until he sat down heavily on the edge of the mattress and immediately crouched to help him remove his boots and ruined socks, he merely sunk into the softness of the bed, allowing her care for him and letting himself relax, letting the harshest vestiges of nightmare and exhaustion begin to slough away at last.
"Okay Pirate," Emma said, clearly trying to inject a playful note into her voice, "not trying to get a free show here, but you can't sleep in those pants. They're filthy, and they can't be very comfortable."
He rose to the bait just as she had known he would, giving her a rakish smirk and raised eyebrow as he teased, "Ah, Love, if you want to undress me, you know you need only ask."
Rolling her eyes, Emma merely shook her head in response, knowing her pirate wasn't up to delivering on the heat he still managed to transmit in his words. Tentatively, she reached forward to unbutton his jeans before easing down the zip, and then swatted at his hip lightly when she sensed another innuendo about to slip off his silver tongue. "Lift," she commanded in a firm, quiet voice, soft and almost husky.
Bracing his weight on hand and stump, Killian raised his hips enough for her to ease the charred, dirt and mud-caked material past his waist and down his legs. It did feel good to have the heavy, constricting material gone, though he hated his helplessness, even with Emma. Trying not to look too long at the rest of his form she had bared, Emma stood and moved to the chest of drawers across the darkened room and pulled out a pair of soft-looking, checkered pants. It almost stole Killian's breath for a moment, emotion rising up his throat in an attempt to choke him as she returned to his side and helped him slip on what she called pajama pants. He couldn't help thinking that she must have stocked this room with clothing she had thought he might like, things she had wanted to show him, even while she was the Dark One. Drawing in a ragged breath, his eyes burned at what had been lost, the simple joy and the time together that had been stolen from them once again.
Emma's eyes had clearly taken him in frankly; those beguiling green pools were blown wide with both curiosity and hunger. He watched as her chest rose and fell heavily and the tip of her pink tongue traced her lips unconsciously, in a way Killian felt sure she didn't even realize she had done. Her eyes flicked back up to his quickly, as if she had forced herself to refocus before desire raged out of hand. It made his heart race that she still had such a powerful reaction to him after all that had happened and the pitiful sight he must make, swaying with weariness, battered and bruised.
She stood once more, and with her hands on his shoulders, gently guided him to lie down, her urging firm, even if he had tried to protest. She ran a rueful finger over the dark circles beneath his eyes, next cupping his cheek with her hand and letting her thumb stroke the long-faded scar high on his cheekbone which had always captured her attention. "You will be able to rest, won't you?" she questioned worriedly, her brow crinkled in an adorable expression of concern. "I think right now that will do you as much good as anything."
He nodded, but caught her wrist and pulled her back as she began to move away. "Stay with me?" he asked, hating to admit weakness, but knowing it was true as soon as the words were spoken. He did not want to let her out of his sight, dreaded what twisted images his mind would conjure once his eyes closed in the dark. If she were with him, perhaps her presence would be enough to keep the nightmares and ghosts at bay.
Emma didn't even hesitate; she merely nodded her acquiescence, separating from him only long enough to shrug off that red leather jacket he loved, pull her sweater off over her head and shimmy out of her own jeans. She stood before him for only a few raw seconds in a flimsy camisole and panties, a quite fetching blush turning all her exposed skin a rosy pink. Finally, she raised her eyes to his when he breathed out, "Stunning, Lass. You are simply stunning." Then she rounded the other side of the bed, slipped under the covers, and to his everlasting delight, curled up tightly against his side.
They were quiet then, merely relishing the comfort and peace to be found in holding each other close, breathing the same air, and knowing that at least in whatever challenge came next they would be together.
Emma felt her eyes growing more heavy-lidded, her head resting on Killian's shoulder when his blunted arm began to rub up and down her back. She felt him expel a deep breath before turning to look sidelong at her. "I'm glad that Regina couldn't remove your heart and split it," he finally admitted, his voice low in the dusky stillness of the room.
Emma immediately wanted to question him, react, argue, but she bit her tongue and waited, knowing he had more to say.
He paused, almost as if he could sense she wanted to stop him, to cut off the horrible possibility of leaving him behind when they returned to the living version of Storybrooke. When she didn't speak, he continued, giving her a handsome, if half-broken, smile. "As much as I would wish nothing more than to return with you and enjoy the future we dreamed of, along with your boy and the rest of your family, Swan your heart is too precious to risk. Perhaps this is as it should be. A third chance at life, after already being granted more than 200 years, simply may not be in the cards for me. My existence here might well be all that I deserve." He lapsed into silence, tracing the soft, feminine curves of Emma's skin, not sure of her reaction, but knowing they could no longer keep their motives or their concerns from each other – it was part of how things had fallen apart in the midst of the Darkness.
A long time passed before his love responded, her emerald gaze vivid and beguiling, mussed golden hair circling her head like a halo as she raised her face to peer at him and managing to look deep into his soul. "You need to know that you are a good man, Killian. You're still a hero. I'm not the only one who loves you, who would m- miss you if you can't come home with us. I know we'll find another way, because this fate is not what you deserve. But…" she paused, resting her hand over his beating heart, her eyes boring into him, "I won't force what I want on you again. I will never give up on you, but if you feel it's time to move on…if we find that path, and it's wh-what you want…then it will be your choice. I promise not to take that from you or try to make it for you. I was wrong before…no matter how desperately I just wanted to save you."
Killian pulled her even closer after her vow; until her body was half-covering his where they lay tangled up with each other. Her words had filled the last sharp crevice in his psyche, and he loved her for understanding what she seemingly couldn't before. For acknowledging that both of their needs and desires had to matter equally if their love was to endure. "Hush now, Swan," he murmured as she tucked her face into his neck and he buried his nose in her hair. Somehow even in this place of brimstone and fire, the strands still smelt faintly of cinnamon and apples. "Don't worry your pretty head yet. If there's a way to come back with you that won't endanger you or anyone else, then I wish to be with you. You know that, don't you?"
"I do now," she exhaled in relief against the skin of his throat.
It seemed that no further words were necessary between them as the savior and her hero were finally able to rest. Though still in the Underworld, things were already better than they had been for a long, long time.

Dialogues for @thesweetkeenlife
1x1
Red: Evidently someone with the authority to make decisions has arrived. I think I smell the stench of your cologne, Agent Cooper. Smells like hubris.
Red: You got rid of your highlights. You look much less Baltimore.
1x3
Red: So you went with the gray?
1x4
Red: That’s a pretty blouse.
1x7
Red: Agent Keen, I have a tip. You’re a winter, not an autumn. Stop wearing olive.
Red: You’d look positively radiant in a Guayabera dress. I know a little shop in Reston. We could stop before our flight.
Red: I brought you a souvenir. What’s your feeling about guava? Liz: Anxiety. Red: Oh, you’re in for a treat.
1x8
Red: I don’t know how you do it. I had that done once. I couldn’t bear the tickling.
Maltz: Ray, look at you. You look great. I mean, the elasticity is amazing. You been juicing? Red: Beets, mostly. Some celery, carrots, a lot of ginger. The kale makes me dyspeptic.
Red: I find it so reassuring - the movie stars, the pop singers. They really are just like the rest of us.
1x9
Red: Donald, never let it be said that I valued a Zegna Venticinque tie over a human life, even yours.

Red: Janice, my sincerest apologies. I’ll take a rain check on the Stroganoff. It smells delicious.
1x12
Red: We brought a little something for Julian - a care package. It’s a Tibetan singing bowl. What do we have here? Some jackfruit, vitamin D, kola nuts. But we’ve got to get him to eat more protein. He looks like hell. He isn’t vegan, is he? Anyway, I’ve also included a couple of my favorite Richard Pryor records. I want to try and inject a little levity into the proceedings. I mean, Julian looks so crabby all the time. House arrest can be grueling. Borakove: Didn’t you spend, like, four months - in Phonthong? Red: Seven. Borakove: How did you survive? Red: Naps. Occasional calisthenics.
Red: If I tell you, you have to promise me you’ll try the fertilized duck eggs. It’s a daring and unique dining experience. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to hell.
1x14
Red: Who decided on this paneling?
Red: You smell nice. Something new?
Red: Wow! And I like your clutch.
1x17
Red: This piroshki is delicious.
1x18
Red: I come bearing gifts - pimento cheese sandwiches, toasted with the crusts cut off. Eartha Kitt’s recipe. It’s a fantastic story.
2x1
Red: It looks so soft. Shea butter?
2x2
Red: Lizzy! I’d like to introduce you to my manicurist, Rosa Heredia. She’s the one I was telling you about, who was dating that nine-fingered bullfighter from Juarez. This woman is an artist, trained at the Latin-American school of medicine in Havana.
2x11
Red: Oh, that’s a shame. She’s gonna miss the most tantalizingly delicious khorem baklava.
2x12
Red: Oh, that’s a shame. Dendrobium? Ruth: My own hybrid. I call them “Snows of Everest.” Red: Lovely.
2x14
Red: You've changed your hair.
Red: Come on. I got to be worth as much as that fake Xuande Ming vessel was. Yaabari: 18. Red: Sorry, Santos, but those cat’s eye Chrysoberyls are brown, not green. An expensive forgery, but a forgery nonetheless. 20!
3x1
Red: I must say, your hair, the way it frames your face is very becoming.
3x2
Red: You have no idea what I’ve offered Chui to divulge the secret of this recipe. He won’t say. I suspect it has something to do with how he beats his eggs.
3x6
Red: I love mauve, but a soft creamy yellow will just open up the entire room.
3x8
Red: You didn’t find anything. Jilly found it ’cause you’re too dense to even look for it. No wonder Cash doesn’t trust you with anything more important than babysitting. T-bone: That’s big talk coming from a g-guy who’s -
3x12
Red: Yeah. Oh, I should probably mention, I booked a pregnancy massage for you. She’ll be here at 9:00. Her name’s Edwina, she’s a registered nurse, and she smells absolutely divine. I hope it goes with the rest of your stuff. I’m told it pulls out.
3x13
Red: I se your new home is a work in progress. What colors are you considering?
3x17
Red: Came together rather nicely. They went with ruby fringe tulips and pink peonies.
3x20
Red: I was just imagining young Katarina covered in glitter. As an adult, it’s easy to dismiss this stuff as girlish frivolity. You forget the wonder it creates, the light captured, secret wishes evoked. It renders even the darkest days sparkly. Never underestimate the power of glitter.
3x21
Red: They say gifting a bouquet of daffodils ensures happiness, while presenting just one means bad luck is on the horizon.
4x7
Red: You looked absolutely ravishing the other night. What do you do to stay in such incredible shape? Calisthenics? Or Jazzercise? Maybe we should be workout partners. I’ll see you in dance class, Samar.
4x18
Red: So I get a babysitter now? I haven’t had a babysitter since Brenda Gilroy. My God, pot pies, Lawrence Welk, bath time with Brenda. Still my perfect Saturday night.
5x1
Smokey: Sorry it took so long. Once I knew Humberto had your African friend and his chums in transpo, I stopped for some Bengay ointment. Think I overdid it with my back. Red: I use Epsom salt baths.
5x2
Red: Oh, my goodness. Look at those Guan vases. And that flatware. Did you know Nancy Reagan - She could dress a table specifically for that night’s guest at a moment’s notice. Russian Silver for a tea with Gorbachev, Italian silver stag-head stirrup cups for a last-minute supper with Sinatra. Can you imagine?
Liz: What color is that, pumpkin? It looks like a pumpkin. Red: His wife says it’s Tuscan Sunset.
5x10
Red: Paris, I’d like you to meet Elizabeth. Paris and I first met when he was a saucier at La Bernadin. Liz: Pleasure to meet you. Paris: Shall I set a third place for lunch? Liz: No, thank you. Red: You may want to think twice. He’s making a turbot with a matsutake mushroom broth.
5x12
Red: What makes her happy? Does she like a good foot massage?
5x15
Red: Maybe a massage parlor. The athletes would love it!
5x16
Red: Mr. Garvey, might I suggest you enjoy what little time you have left - crab cakes, scalp massages, perhaps a double feature of “The 400 Blows” and “Jules and Jim” - whatever floats your boat. Do it now, because I will find those bones, and when I do, I’m gonna kill you.
5x17
Red: I hope you have indigestion. Liz: No. But if it makes you feel better, I’m in a bad mood. Red: Excellent! Dembe: He’s making fenugreek porridge. My ancestors learned that it can cure a troubled stomach and soothe aches and pains. Red: Medicinal South Sudanese cuisine. Liz: Cooking it up in their embassy’s kitchen. Aren’t you living large?
5x19
Red: This apartment. Right here. Oh. My God. To have been the proverbial fly on Clyde Tolson’s duvet. Liz: Clyde Tolson lived here? J. Edgar Hoover’s lover? Red: This was their secret hideaway. Imagine the conversations. Cooing over JFK’s lovers. Slandering Dr. King. What peignoir to wear to bed. When I saw the apartment was for sale, I couldn’t resist. Liz: You own the apartment where the homophobic head of the FBI carried on his affair with his boyfriend? Red: Allegedly. I wouldn’t admit this in mixed company, but J. Edgar and I have a surprising amount in common. For instance, we both always get our man.
Red: What’s that smell? Is that lavender?  And mint. Is that your head? What kind of products do you use? I’m dying of curiosity. Garvey: Wouldn’t that be nice. Red: You smell that? Dembe: Yes. It’s lovely. Red: I’ll say. Absolutely lovely. Whatever it is, you and I need to get some.
5x22
Red: Oh. A lightweight merino. Super 120, natural stretch. I swear by it.
Waters: So, what do you think of this one? Red: Oh, John, yes. I like that. But go with the Snowy River Collection in the Glen Urquhart plaid. It worked for the Duke of Windsor. And, just my opinion, consider a vest. Waters: You think? Are vests in again? Red: Vests have never been out.
6x4
Vega: Yeah. I also got the blade that’s gonna carve you like a pumpkin. Red: Jack-o’-lantern. Vega: Huh? Red: A pumpkin is a gourd. A jack-o’-lantern is the carved pumpkin. Either way, it doesn’t matter. I knew what you meant.
6x5
Baldwin: One. I arrested that man there, in the navy-blue suit. Sima: May the record reflect the witness has identified the defendant. Red: Uh, o-objection. Judge Wilkins: Grounds? Red: The suit is actually a prunelle weave blue with a subtle overlay of red. So in the right light, it goes quite plum.

Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) Haven 5x15 Power (2015)
Audrey Parker: [Any problems?] Well, there’s been a couple fights, and after two weeks of nonstop Troubles, I think everybody’s starting to lose it. Hell, I’m barely holding it together.
Dwight Hendrickson: It’s not showing. These people will be thanking you when night falls.
***
Audrey: You helping out?
Charlotte Cross: Trying. No shortage of things to do.
Audrey: Especially when you’re stuck here with no ticket home.
How long?
I don’t know.
Charlotte: Do you realize how hard this is?
Audrey: What are you gonna do, turn me into someone else?
Charlotte: No, I would never do that. I’m trying to fix things.
Audrey: Try to fix The Troubles.
Charlotte: We’ve already talked about this. It’s almost impossible to remove a trouble without killing someone.
Audrey: “Almost” is not absolute. You have been on this for two weeks. You must have figured something out.
Charlotte: Sure, I just need tools I don’t have, materials that are impossible to get, and knowledge that might not exist.
Audrey: You wouldn’t be this frustrated if you didn’t think maybe you could do it.
***
Nathan Wuornos: I’ll be fine. It’s just a scenic walk to the power plant.
Audrey: Down trouble alley, and cell phones don’t work. And with the magnet trouble active, cars are risky too.
Nathan: It’s a good thing I got a crack team.—
Audrey: Charlotte, why is she going?
Nathan: She’s good at science. And I think, really, she just wanted to prove to you she genuinely wants to help.
Audrey: Okay, well, whatever the reason, just keep an eye on her for me, okay? ‘Cause she and I, we’re not immune to these new Troubles.
Nathan: Yeah, don’t worry, I won’t let your mom become trouble bait.
Audrey: Well, it’s not just about her being my mom. I think that she may have figured out how to end all this.
Nathan: She figured something out?
Audrey: Maybe, but she’s not talking about it.
Nathan: Good to know.
Audrey:While you’re gone, I’ll just keep searching the school for the person with the darkness trouble. People have been coming in all day, so they could be here by now. Hey, so this is it. Is it time?
Nathan: Daylight’s burning.
Audrey: Just don’t let the nighttime burn you. I need you back here.[goodbye kiss]
Audrey: What the hell is going on, Vince? [Oh, Audrey.]That’s Peggy’s husband, Rolf.
Vince Teagues: This isn’t what it looks like.
Audrey: Really? Because it looks like you and Dwight are covering up a murder.
Vince: There’s enough panic and fear as is. We didn’t want to activate more Troubles.
Audrey: What did him in?
Vince: We don’t know. There are no marks on him except for… but he’s not alone. Three other deaths in the last two weeks, and that’s not including Joe Sena and The Colorado Kid.
Audrey: My son? The same person murdered my son 27 years ago?
Vince: We’re calling his murderer “the no marks killer.“
Audrey: A serial killer? That’s what you’re hiding from me? What else are you keeping from me, Vince?
Vince: Dwight is doing his best to keep order to enforce the rules, but he doesn’t have it in him to kill.
Audrey: Yes, he does. In this Haven, banishment equals execution.
Vince: Not exactly.
Audrey: What the—
Vince: Thanks to our friend there, we’re keeping them in a prison of sorts.
***
Charlotte: Can we talk?
Audrey: I already heard about Nathan. I’m going after him. Move or I will make you.
Charlotte: Audrey.
Audrey: Let go of me. Let go!
Charlotte: Come here. It’s okay. *hug*
Audrey: It can’t be true.
Random: Hey, Nathan’s back!
Audrey: Nathan? Nathan! *hugs*

Don’t really have much to say about Sharp Objects (it’s good but that’s all I‘ve got lol) but I’ve been moving on through my tgw rewatch and I want to talk about tgw with someone! So I was wondering what are your favorite relationships (romantic and otherwise) on the show? What’s your favorite season? What’s your biggest praise for the show and your biggest criticism?
Don’treally have much to say about Sharp Objects (it’s good but that’s all I‘ve gotlol) but I’ve been moving on through my tgw rewatch and I want to talk abouttgw with someone! So I was wondering what are your favorite relationships(romantic and otherwise) on the show? What’s your favorite season? What’s yourbiggest praise for the show and your biggest criticism?
So before I get in to my (very delayed) reply, just want tomake sure that all my followers are aware of @hermione-mak-gilmore‘s awesome TGW rewatch posts, which you can find here.
My thoughts, rambling and not proofread as ever, are under the cut.
FavoriteRelationships:
Romantic: Diane and Kurt and no others. Okay, that’s a lie.I think TGW had a lot of compelling and well-developed romantic relationships, even if Diane/Kurt is the only pairing I would say I ship. If I expand my thinking to include romantic relationshipsthat were written well enough to elicit strong feelings and many, manythoughts, I have to mention both Alicia/Will and Alicia/Peter. Just look at thelayers in Will’s Decision Treesequence, or the subtle shifts in their relationship over the years, or theconflicting feelings of season three, or (oh my goodness) any of Alicia’sthoughts after Will’s death (excluding season 7 because season 7 doesn’t dothem justice lol). And for Alicia/Peter, every time the two of them discusstheir family or politics, I see why they’re drawn to each other, and every timethey fight, I see just how much history and baggage they have.
Not romantic: Alicia and Cary’s always underdevelopedpartnership, Alicia and Diane’s complicated friendship (and the power dynamics! And the paranoia!), Alicia and Eli’s mutual respect that turned into afriendship, Alicia and Kalinda (don’t get me started), Cary and Clarke’sfriendship, Diane and Cary (they’re so alike but never seem to be able to workwell together!), DIANE AND WILL’S PARTNERSHIP (that one gets to be in allcaps), Diane and Kalinda (I don’t think we ever got enough of them together),Eli and Peter, Kalinda and Will, Kalinda and Robyn, and probably every othercombination of characters.
Favorite Season:
My personal favorite season is probably season six but I’llbe the first to admit it’s not the best season (and that it is in factinfuriatingly terrible at many points). Instead of ranking the seasons I’mgoing to make a pro/con list for each of them…
Season 1:
Pros: Everythingis so simple yet effective! I love, love, love the structure and pacing of theseason (Alicia/Cary’s competition). The small moments are priceless, and everycharacter’s personality (especially Alicia’s) is well-established. And when Ilook back at season one, I can see all of the groundwork being laid for thetone/humor/style that’s become TGW’s signature.
Cons: It feelslike a first season. If this aired today and not in 2009, I’m not sure I would’vecut some weak early episodes as much slack as I did when I first watched. ThePilot is great (clichéd at times, but great) but it’s not until, what, episode14? That the show finds its footing. That’s a lot of time to invest in a showthat’s a mixed bag. There are lots of weak episodes (Unorthodox, I’m looking at you) and storylines (Peter’s retrial andall the conspiracy surrounding it).
Season 2:
Pros: Season 2contains Nine Hours, which is stillone of the best hours of TGW, as well as HamSandwich and that run of episodes from InSickness to Closing Arguments. Ifseason 2 were just its best episodes, it would easily be one of my favoriteseasons. But…
Cons: It alsocontains a bunch of filler episodes I can barely remember, a few too manypolitical plots about viral videos, and the nonsense that was Blake Calamar(and that never-ending hotel scene in NetWorth). Oh, and I’m here for the drama but Peter never slept with Kalindalol nope I don’t buy it.
Season 3:
Pros: It has somereally great standalone episodes.
Cons: It has somereally terrible episodes and subplots. Alicia’s wig. A general lack ofdirection that makes even enjoyable subplots seem meaningless and distracting.
Season 4:
Pros: Everythingfrom The Seven Day Rule to What’s in the Box? is some of thestrongest material ever on the show. The introduction of memory pops!
Cons: Beginning ofKalicia ban, NICK SAVARESE’S EXISTENCE, Mandy Post Idiot Reporter (yes she getsa mention), deeply boring cases and plots in the first half of the season, someweird stuff for the Florrick kids.
Season 5:
Pros: HITTING THEFAN. THE DECISION TREE. A FEW WORDS. DRAMATICS, YOUR HONOR. THE LAST CALL. Idon’t think any other season has as many pivotal, perfect episodes. And seasonfive has the strongest structure of any season (season one is a close second)with its five episode arcs that make you forget the bad, slow episodes becausethere’s always a great, dramatic episode in the near future. Season five makesthe most of four seasons of worldbuilding. It’s smart and exciting and dramaticand it still feels like almost everything is motivated by character developmentrather than a need for plot (see: office politics in the later seasons, or howclumsily Bond is introduced at the beginning of season two). Also thescore!!!!! Season five is the year the score becomes truly incredible.
Cons: Some of theseason five episodes are weak, y’all. We, The Juries is terrible, and thatepisode and Goliath and David were acomplete waste of time (but we got Thicky Trick out of the latter so it canstay). Most of the episodes that aren’t the big ones are similarly weak. TheKalicia ban continues, and unlike in season four, Kalinda’s material reallysuffers as a result. It feels like she has a nude scene in most episodes. Andthen the last run of episodes in the season has its moments, but most of it isjust… directionless and not very good. You can tell the writers were building to 5x15 and then had to scramble tofind new directions in its aftermath.
Season 6:
Pros: The writers’dedication to exploring Alicia’s journey and how she’s changed over the years. The beginnings of the Cary arc. Some good material for Kalinda (and some badmaterial but I’ll get to that). Prady is a perfect opponent for Alicia. Johnnyis a great addition to the cast. Some really great Alicia/Peter moments andfights.
Cons: The Debate. The separation of the leads, which probably happened because of (ugh) the Kalicia ban (UGH). Not only arethe leads separate from each other, they’re separate in glaring ways. It’s notsimply that Alicia’s off running a campaign (a very good reason she might notbe interacting with Kalinda day to day)… it’s that Alicia’s running a campaignbut her law partners have no opinions about it, until they suddenly do, butthen they suddenly don’t again. How am I supposed to be invested in interpersonaldrama when they aren’t laying groundwork? Season five used up so much of thegroundwork laid previously that the show needed to take a minute to reset andplay out its new conflicts before rushing into more dramatic storylines.Instead… Diane’s at the firm now, Alicia’s running for SA, Cary’s in jail, and thefirm’s somehow back at LG (and somehow hasbecome LG by the end of the season). I don’t think season six contains manybad ideas, it just doesn’t juggle its ideas well. A better version of seasonsix wouldn’t just give us great Alicia episodes, it would use conflicts at theoffice and the way the other characters view Alicia’s campaign to add another layer.I personally didn’t have any trouble figuring out why Alicia was running for SAbut I know that’s been a top objection to s6, and I understand where it comesfrom. A better arc—one that forced Alicia to explain her motivations to othersand devoted more time to Alicia developing policies and meeting voters andvolunteers—would’ve given me more of the character development I love and helped to make the arc succeed forothers.
Season 7:
Pros: Lucca Quinn.
Cons: Everythingthat is not Lucca Quinn. But seriously: there are a few things other than LuccaI like (the first few episodes where it seems like the writers are slowing downand re-establishing a status quo, Driven,Alicia’s breakdown in Judged, Party, the idea of ending the show witha slap, and the song “Better”), but mostly, I don’t like season 7 at all. Peterrunning for President is flat-out stupid, and an unforced error. Alicia’s wigSUCKS. Diane and Cary are off in silly plots until Alicia and Lucca(illogically, because of an uncharacteristically stupid thing Alicia does!)somehow wind up back at LG (or LAL, whatever, it’s LG). Ghost Will in thefinale is… not good (use Josh Charles, I don’t care, but bringing back Will inthat particular way is just fanservice). Peter’s trial at the end of the showis convoluted and I’m pretty sure the story changes from episode to episode. There are also some unnecessarily ridiculous reveals, like Peter sleeping withGeneva (no) and Kurt sleeping with Holly (very no). But my biggest problem withthe Peter-trial-arc is that it’s a repeat of the emotional beats from the endof season six. Season seven should not undo all of season six just so it can (poorly)attempt to do it over again. After seven seasons, it comes down to… Aliciabeing devastated over the voicemail (UGH) and Peter doing something sketchythat forces Alicia to play Good Wife again? Really? It’s like the writers chosethe easiest paths for creating drama (voicemail) and demonstrating growth (then/nowcontrasts). I don’t blame the writers, though, for how bad season seven is. It’sbecome increasingly apparent to me that CBS was fucking around with the show inseason seven: they rushed BrainDead to air like a month after TGW ended, whichmeant the Kings were probably spending most of their time staffing/writingBrainDead while they were working on s7 (they only wrote two episodes—the premiereand the finale). And as if that wasn’t enough, I didn’t believe it at the time, but I truly think CBS was hoping to renew the show for a Kings-less seasoneight. If that’s the case, then it makes sense that season 7 couldn’t take manyrisks and would have to get back to being a fun, simple workplace proceduralwhere all the characters worked at the same firm. So by the time the writerslearned the show was actually in its final season—despite the fact they’d beenplanning on seven seasons for years!!—it was too late to do anything other thantack on a rushed and repetitive arc to close out the show.
Biggest Praise(s):
·        ALICIA FLORRICK. I love Alicia more than I’veever loved any fictional character. That’s partially because of what she’s likeand largely because of how well, and consistently, she’s written.
·        A commitment to being realistic. I’m not sayingeverything the show’s ever done is realistic, but the writers were clearlyalways interested in creating realistic characters who lived in a realisticworld. I appreciated that the show acknowledged systemic, structural problems(within politics, criminal justice, workplaces, etc) and that it was alwaysaware of prevalent stereotypes and the importance of appearances. I think thatwhen people look back on TGW, it’ll be seen as one of the most accuraterepresentations of what the world was like in 2009-2016.
·        Casting, costuming, set decoration, and scoring.
·        Memory pops!
Biggest Criticisms:
When I rewatched season three (between seasons five and six)I said there were three main problems with the show that were especiallyapparent in season three. I’ll say them again here, and add one more.
·        Sprawl: Sometimes the show tries to do too much andit simply doesn’t have the bandwidth.
·        Bad pacing: 22 episodes is a lot. Oftentimes itfeels like the writers write BIG EPISODES and filler episodes, with no middleground. If the filler episodes were instead build-up episodes, the big episodeswould be even better and there’d be less filler.
·        Loss of focus on Alicia: When the show focuseson its central character, it’s less likely to turn into a sprawling,poorly-paced mess. My thinking is that if the writers focused more on Alicia, they’d have to be more deliberate about how they write the characters aroundher (to make the most of their screentime and establish their wants and beliefsso their interactions with Alicia are as meaningful as possible).
·        Since I came up with the criticisms above, theshow’s aired two full seasons since my original post (and I think I came upwith these criticisms before I even made that post), plus two full seasons of aspin-off, AND I STILL HAVE THE SAME DAMN PROBLEMS.
