If I see another porn bot post in the goth tab I’m going to go insane. I want to like posts about the silly little bands I like, fashion and subculture. Not shit that equates goth to being about what you wear/an aesthetic, still getting the typical fashion wrong anyway and just feeding into the “big titty goth girlfriend” brainrot.

From last.fm:"Erato is also the name of a Belgian goth rock band. The band debuted in 1993, and has always put strong songwriting and live performance first. In 1997 they won the first annual Gothrally, which put them on the map in the Belgian alternative music scene as upcoming goth rock act. The band has lived up to their reputation, playing several live shows across Belgium as well as abroad.
ERATO's music can be best described as a rare blend of the purest New Wave sound of the 1980s and contemporary rock. Their unique sound has lead them to perform with bands such as the Sisters of Mercy, Skeletal Family, Ikon, Violet Stigmata, the Cruxshadows, Two Witches, Faith and The Muse, and many others.
Since their formation ERATO has released 4 albums, and still performs live today. The band is expected to release their fifth studio album sometime in 2013."

The r/goth subreddit kinda swinging to the opposite side of the Goth Gatekeeping Discourse pendulum and like getting into incredibly nitpicky detached arguments that don’t really mean anything within the context of like. Going outside and actually engaging with the irl scene about, like, whether Disintegration by The Cure is “actually goth” or not will never not be funny. Someone asked recently if The Birthday Massacre is goth and some guy replied super condescendingly with a comment like “I’ve never heard of them before but listening to them now, they have to be the least goth band I’ve LITERALLY ever heard.” Like…. Come on now. 😭

Me to random people who don't know anything about alternative subcultures: yeah lol I'm goth or whatever
Me to actual goths: no I just dress alternativly and while I appreciate goth music it's not really my vibe so i dont identify as goth really I just identify as generally alternative because I used to be an emo purist but I'm lazy nowadays and what I wear is what I like and what makes me feel good and also I don't wear color

the thing about that idiot posting "goth is a middle to upper class subculture" and using the long victorian gowns as an example of an expensive clothing item.... like as a goth i know zero rich goths. we're all working lower middle to lower class ppl and i don't think that was any different in the 90s and 80s. i think goths are extremely creative, and a lot of the beautiful clothing like that you see is either handmade, thrifted, or shared/swapped amongst friends. all of my more pricey pieces are all secondhand, and i usually save up or try and "work" towards buying them or treat myself during a tax check period or some shit. any upper class goth who has a wardrobe of entirely new very expensive items may look the part and enjoy the music but they're missing the ethos. this is true of like most alternative fashion subcultures. like people who wear lolita fashion or victorian/historical stuff may have "expensive" wardrobes, but they're usually regular working class people who handmake, thrift, or save up and budget to be able to afford the things they want to use to express themselves. obviously punk fashion doesn't have the connotation of looking expensive, but the ethos between all of these subcultures when it comes to the look is very similar.

From last.fm:"Rosetta Stone is a British Goth band formed in the mid 1980s around members Porl King (Rosetta Stone, Miserylab) on guitar/vocals/keyboards and Karl North (Rosetta Stone, Dream Disciples) on bass, plus their drum machine and synthesizer rack nicknamed "Madame Razor." The band was named after the Rosetta Stone, an Egyptian historical artifact, and used ancient mythological imagery. Their early style and first album reflected the jangly-guitar sounds of 1980s gothic rock, and their first big break was supporting The Mission.
In 1991 the band released their most successful single Adrenaline, an indie dancefloor anthem which marked a change in direction for the band's sound and line-up. Porl Young (who had joined just after the recording of An Eye For The Main Chance) left to produce Children On Stun whilst Porl King and Karl North remained to take the band into a more industrial sound."

The number of people that I've apparently made angry by saying "having black hair doesn't make you 'more goth' than someone without black hair" is... a lot. It's a big number, lol.

The aesthetician of the gothic subculture
The gothic subculture is music based, yet now a days, people either think of it as only fashion or aesthetic images.
Another problem I have is that goth is rooted in interest in the morbid, dark and macabre and people turned it into just aesthetic pictures. Also, I feel like most people ignore how in the subculture, there was an appreciation for the arts and literature, yet now it's just viewed as an aesthetic.
Also, another thing that bothers me is that goth is on the receiving end of an attack on its meaning and pillars. People on the internet and some I know have said "goth is as goth means to you". That would effectively mean goth does not exist as goth is an idea, a creative outlet, and when it doesn't have a set meaning, it doesn't exist. Also, a subculture is non-existent if it is not defined. Punk is not punk without fighting the system. Without it being defined and set, it would not exist. Why is goth any different. Goth is morbid, macabre and dark. Without that, it is not existent.
Why is goth being treated like this, well this might sound controversial, but there wasn't enough gate keeping. By people saying, sure you're goth when that person trying to join isn't interested in the music or darker topics. Thus, goth has been basterdized.
