Today was a big day, and you wish you could say you were more excited about it. It’s not every day that your big brother gets married to the love of his life. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and Natasha “Phoenix” Trace had finally said “I do” and you were ecstatic for your favorite female pilot to officially become a part of the family.
But you were also recently single, having been broken up with by the boyfriend you’d been with throughout most of college and the following two years since you’d graduated.
Things hadn’t ended on bad terms, the two of you just weren’t in love anymore. What worked in college just wasn’t working anymore, and you’d spent the last few months of your relationship denying to yourself the fact that you were unhappy.
You’re pretty sure now that the both of you had known for a while you weren’t right for each other, but you had been scared to end it–terrified at the notion of starting over. But, the relationship had run its course and, ultimately, he was the one to end things.
That was three weeks ago. You’d come to terms with the break-up, knowing it was what’s best for you. But that didn’t mean it still didn't hurt. It didn’t mean you weren’t sad, or that you were ready to be subjected to all the happiness and celebration that goes into a wedding.
You’re granted a brief reprieve from your melancholy thoughts when your new sister-in-law sneaks up and taps you on the shoulder. “Hey… You don’t look like you’re having much fun. Are you okay?”
Natasha asks the question with a sheepish grin. You can tell she’s trying to seem nonchalant, but you can hear the underlying concern in her voice.
Bradley and Natasha had been together five years now, engaged for one, and you could clearly see from the way that he smiled at her and the permanent glimmer in his eyes, that your brother was truly happy. He and Phoenix had become fast friends during their time together at Top Gun, and it eventually evolved into something more.
When Bradley brought Natasha home to meet you at Thanksgiving during your sophomore year of college, you knew even then that she would be the girl he was one day going to marry. Best friends turned lovers. You could only dream you’d find that for yourself someday.
You and Natasha had quickly become close as well. Bradley and Uncle Mav were the only family you had and it was nice to have another person–especially a badass woman like Natasha, in your corner.
The two of you got on like a house on fire, and Natasha was always there to give her love and support. She was like the big sister you never had, and it wasn’t long before the two of you were ganging up on your brother and teasing him together.
As Natasha’s maid of honor, you’d spent the morning with her and the other bridesmaids, helping the blushing bride get ready for her big day. In a fancy suite getting all dolled up while drinking mimosas, having your hair and makeup done before changing into matching bridesmaid dresses of a silky satin—cowl neckline and spaghetti straps, in a soft lavender shade. Helping Natasha into her beautiful, intricately lacy, white wedding gown.
The wedding ceremony was absolutely beautiful and had gone off without a hitch. Bradley had tears in his eyes as Natasha walked down the aisle to the Wedding March, matching smiles on their faces as they joined hands at the altar.
You even shed a tear yourself as the couple exchanged their vows, and before you knew it, Bradley was pulling Natasha in for a loving kiss and they were declared husband and wife.
Then, onto the reception, you’d watched with a slightly sad smile as Bradley and Natasha shared their first dance as husband and wife. You were so happy for the two of them, truly, but it was hard to get into the headspace for celebrating. Seeing two of your favorite people so in love when you’d just been dumped. When your own love life was at a standstill and you were left feeling lost and lonely.
You’d been too preoccupied in your thoughts to notice the first dance had come to an end before Nat came to talk to you. You felt guilty at the fact that she was spending her time worrying about you when she should be enjoying her big day. You’re lucky to call Natasha your sister.
So, you force your most convincing smile onto your face and nod your head, telling her that you’re just fine.
“Just tired from the long day, but I’m having a great time. I’m good, I promise!” You weren’t sure if she believed you, but luckily Natasha was pulled away by one of her aunts gushing over how beautiful she looked and offering her congratulations, before she could protest.
It’s especially hard to enjoy a wedding reception when you’re sat at a table alone, watching as everyone else is having a good time, dancing along to the music being played by the DJ.
Once the first dance was through, the rest of the guests were welcomed to join the happy couple on the dancefloor. You knew your brother had plenty of cute pilot friends, and you also knew–thanks to Natasha–that some of them were single. So, you were hoping that one of them might ask you to dance.
You may have also been hopeful for the possibility of getting laid tonight. You were newly single but even then, it’d been months since you and your ex last had sex. You were sad and lonely and thought, what better way to get back out there and help yourself feel better than hooking up with one of said cute pilots?
Your plan, however, seemed futile because none of the guys would even talk to you. In fact, since Bradley had introduced you to them after the ceremony earlier in the day, his fellow pilots could hardly look you in the eye.
“Guys, this is my little sister.” With an arm wrapped around your shoulders, your brother had rattled off each of the naval aviators’ names and callsigns, and told his friends your name. They were all nice enough, each politely shaking your hand and making small talk, a few of them making jokes at your big brother’s expense.
But you could sense there was an awkwardness there, almost as if the members of the Dagger squad were afraid of you. You couldn’t understand why, but you could tell they were hesitant to keep the conversation going with you.
Initially, you brushed it off. However, as the day went on, whenever you’d find yourself alone in conversation with one of the Top Gun pilots, they each kept the interactions very short and sweet, acting as though they couldn’t get away from you fast enough. Leaving you feeling unsure of yourself and wondering what you could have possibly done to have them all so blatantly avoiding you.
So, after sharing a dance with your dear Uncle Mav and relinquishing him back into the awaiting arms of Penny, you spend the next half hour moping at the table on your own. Absent-mindedly swirling the straw around in your drink, chin resting in your other hand as you watch the festivities going on around you.
And that’s how Jake finds you.
You were adorable. With your sparkling eyes and your hair pinned up into some intricate up-do that Jake wanted to see undone, a few pieces flowing down and framing your face. The hint of cleavage Jake could see beneath the cowl neckline of that lavender dress that hugged your curves so well as you leaned forward against the table, a slight pout on your lips as you observed everyone having fun on the dancefloor.
Jake could tell that you weren’t having a good time and he knew exactly why.
Little did you know that earlier that morning while Bradley and his groomsmen were getting ready in a suite separate from the girls, your brother had had a “talk” with all the guys.
Debriefing about last night’s rehearsal dinner, Hangman, Coyote, and Fanboy–all of the single groomsmen–had been discussing a few of Natasha’s bridesmaids that they thought were cute. Especially the maid of honor.
Rooster’s ears had been ringing when he heard them describe you to a T, and Jake could practically see smoke coming out of them as he turned toward his friends, always the overprotective big brother ready to shut them down.
“The maid of honor,” all of the groomsmen turned to look at the mustached groom as he began to speak.
“Is my little sister. And she’s off limits.” At his words and the stern, serious tone of Bradley’s voice, Jake and the others collectively shut up, matching caught-out and shocked expressions on each of their faces.
“I mean it, guys, I don’t wanna see any of you hitting on her. I love you all like my brothers, but I’m not afraid to kick someone’s ass if I see you trying it on with my sister.”
The guys all knew that Rooster wasn’t bluffing. With rushed apologies and confirmations that they’d leave you alone, the tension left the room as they all laughed it off and went about their business getting ready for the ceremony.
With Bradley’s warning in mind, the Dagger squad had spent the rest of the day being nice—but not too nice—whenever they spoke to you, and tried to keep their interactions with you to a minimum, so as not to face your older brother’s wrath.
They all knew that Bradley could be a bit hotheaded. Even Bob, who is very happily married, found himself a little afraid to spend too much time conversing with you.
Jake was ready to follow the rules too, it was Bradshaw’s wedding after all. He could hold off on pissing off his best frenemy for one night. At least that was the case, until the reception.
When he saw you sitting all alone, all gorgeous and sulking, Jake knew right then that he had to go talk to you. He knew he was the only one stupid enough—or brave enough, if you ask him—to go against your brother’s wishes, and who was Jake if he wasn’t stirring the pot?
Was it so wrong for him to help a pretty lady have a good time? And you were beautiful, strikingly so, so Jake wouldn’t mind if he got a little something out of it too.
Jake isn’t scared of your brother. Besides, Rooster is far too busy dancing with Phoenix, the newlywed couple far too preoccupied with making heart-eyes at each other to notice him making his way over to you.
Your eyes widen with intrigue as the tall, blonde pilot—Jake, or Hangman as he’d been introduced to you—sidles over to where you’re seated.
God, was he handsome. You sit up a little straighter as he plonks himself down in the chair next to you, a devilish smirk on his lips as he turns toward you.
“What is a pretty little thing like you doing sitting here all on her lonesome?” He inquires, a slight Southern drawl to his voice. Texan, maybe?
“Um… drinking?” Your answer is short, but you’re a bit caught off guard and still annoyed by the fact that all of your attempts at socializing tonight with anyone outside of the few members of your family and Phoenix, had failed.
But now, here was Hangman, going out of his way to talk to you and looking you straight in your eyes. His green gaze intense and leaving you a bit flustered.
Jake glances down to where you’re still toying with the straw in your near-empty glass. With that playful smirk still present on his face, he goes to speak again.
“Well, darlin’, I cannot in good conscience let you drink alone. What are you drinking and how ‘bout I buy you another one?” His question makes you scoff.
“Tequila Sunrise, and it’s an open bar, so… no, you can’t buy me a drink.” You roll your eyes at the almost too handsome pilot.
Oh. Pretty and feisty. Jake was going to have a hard time staying away from you.
“Well then, how about I acquire you another one, and because I’m such a nice guy, I’ll even join you?” Jake winks at you and stands, striding towards the bar before you could even answer his question.
Your brother and Natasha had mentioned Hangman to you a handful times over the years, and he was just as cocky and self-assured as they always said. But, you’d be lying to yourself if you said you don’t find it kind of charming, or that you aren’t extremely attracted to him.
Jake returns a couple minutes later, a Tequila Sunrise in one hand and a glass of what looked to be whiskey in the other. He places your drink down in front of you and slides back into the chair next to yours, albeit a few inches closer this time.
“You know, you look pretty miserable over here. Though, I guess I would be too if I had to grow up with Rooster as my brother.” That draws a genuine laugh out of you.
“There she is!” His exclamation makes you giggle, a slight blush taking over your cheeks. Jake loves the sight of your smile. The sound of your laugh. He decides that he wants to hear that sound over and over again.
“He’s not so bad.” You refute through your laughter.
“I just don’t really know many people here, and I kind of get the feeling my brother and Nat’s friends don’t like me very much. I’m not sure why…” You trail off and look down at your lap, shy all of a sudden. Jake has to fight very hard to not smile at how adorable your furrowed brows and pouted lips are.
“You’re the first person here to actually talk to me for more than two seconds.” You let out a nervous laugh and start sipping your new drink.
Jake feels bad that your dumbass brother’s plan to keep the guys away from you is the reason you’re feeling so down, without you even knowing. And no matter how cute you may look, Jake doesn’t like seeing you sad. He’s going to rectify that.
“Well darlin’, now that I’m here, you don’t need to talk to anyone else.” Jake’s smile is still smug, but sincere, and you can’t help but grin back at him. You shake your head and giggle at the cocky pilot, thinking to yourself that it wouldn’t be so bad if he were the only person you had to talk to for the rest of the night.
“Now, how about we finish these drinks and then we head out onto the dancefloor?” To that, you agree, and the two of you sit sipping your drinks and talking for a little while. Getting better acquainted. Jake is fun and very charming, and you love how easily he’s able to make you laugh.
When Jake notices that you’re just about done with your tequila sunrise, he quickly shoots back the rest of his whiskey, ready to get you onto the dancefloor. He stands and you accept the hand he’s extended toward you, his large hand engulfing your smaller one and letting him lead you into the crowd of people.
Standing in front of him now, you only just notice how good Jake looks in his suit. It’s a simple black suit, white undershirt and black tie, like all the groomsmen wore. But the way it fits his body, the way the jacket sleeves are ever-so-slightly too tight around his big arms, and the way you could tell he was extremely toned even under layers of clothing, made you dizzy.
As you make it onto the floor, Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Everywhere’ begins to play through the speakers. Jake pulls you in close to him by your joined hands and spins you around under his arm. The two of you laugh, both a little tipsy.
You spend the duration of the song dancing together like children without a care in the world. Not much rhythm to it or any real dance moves, mostly just jumping around and singing along to the lyrics, Jake twirling you around a good number of times. You’re sure that the two of you look like idiots, but it’s the most fun you’ve had all night.
You dance together to a couple more upbeat songs, and Jake can’t help but admire you. He finds it incredibly sexy how carefree you seem in this moment.
As another classic rock song comes to an end and a slower song takes its place, Jake pulls you in again. This time by the waist, until you’re nearly chest-to-chest. The warmth of his hands setting your skin alight through the thin, satiny fabric of your bridesmaid’s dress.
Your own hands slide up his biceps, coming to rest on his broad shoulders. You look up at him with those bright, beautiful eyes and a shy smile, and Jake finds himself entranced.
God, he wants to kiss you.
You rest your head on his chest as he begins to sway you softly along to the music. As if Jake can feel eyes burning into the side of his face, he turns the two of you slightly, only to find Rooster glaring at him as he stands across the dancefloor, slow dancing with Phoenix.
“What the fuck is he doing?” Bradley quietly asks, mostly to himself, but the question catches his wife’s attention.
“What is who doing?” Natasha queries with a laugh as she turns to look at where Bradley’s hard gaze is pointed.
“Aw, maybe Bagman does have a heart.” Her lips form into an exaggerated pout as she watches Jake and you sway from side to side as he holds you in his arms, your head leaning on his chest. Bradley looks down at her with a bewildered look on his face.
“No, that is most definitely not AW, and no he doesn’t!” He grouches with a sigh. Natasha gives him a questioning glance, waiting expectantly for whatever the hell it is she’s missing right now.
“I told those idiots to stay away from her.” Bradley mutters dejectedly.
“What are you talking about, told who to stay away from who?” Natasha narrows her eyes at her husband.
“Jake and the rest of the squad. I overheard them talking about how hot they thought my sister was, and I told them to leave her alone.” Bradley whines.
Natasha stays silent for a few moments, processing this information and looking up at her husband with a stunned expression.
“Oh, honey…” She can’t help but laugh. Now she understands why you’d spent much of the evening sulking.
“What?!” Bradley practically shrieks. “She’s my baby sister, I just wanna protect her!”
At that, Natasha cracks a smile. She’s always admired how much Rooster loves his little sister and how, with your parents gone, he always felt it was his responsibility to take care of you.
“Bradley, I love you, but you really are an idiot sometimes.” Natasha grins, shaking her head at her husband. The look he gives her is dumbfounded and one of slight offense.
“Babe, I get that you want to protect your sister, but she’s not a kid anymore. She’s an adult and you have to let her make her own choices and her own mistakes. Even if one of those mistakes is Bagman.” Natasha scrunches her nose playfully and Bradley gives her a deadpan look.
“You know she’d be pissed if she found out that you did that.” Natasha smirks, thinking back on a few of the silly sibling spats that she’s had to mediate over the last few years since she’s been with Bradley—most of them due entirely to his overprotective tendencies and your desire to escape them.
“Come on, Roo, you know I’m right.” Bradley rolls his eyes dramatically and sighs, wrapping his arms around his bride.
“Yeah, you always are. Doesn’t mean I have to like it.” He places a kiss on her forehead, and murmurs against her skin. “But if he hurts her, I’ll kill him.”
Bradley glares in Jake’s direction once again.
Jake can also feel the eyes of the other Top Gun pilots on the two of you. They’ve all just witnessed the interaction and look between him and Rooster, some looking on in amusement, others in fear for Jake's safety.
Jake has to bite back a laugh, leaning his head down on top of yours to hide the cheeky smile that plays on his lips. The two of you slow dance a little while longer, Jake’s hands rubbing gently up and down your sides and sending your stomach into a frenzy of butterflies.
Jake decides he’d like a moment alone with you, away from prying eyes. His hands leave your torso, moving to rest on your arms, giving them a light squeeze to gain your attention. The hazy, content look on your pretty face when you look up at him only strengthens his desire to be alone with you. Fuck, he wants you.
“Come with me?” Jake leans down to whisper into your ear, his warm breath sending a shiver down your spine. When he pulls back, you look up to see his emerald eyes boring into you, and you simply nod.
You aren’t sure where he’s taking you, but if he keeps looking at you like that, you’re pretty certain you’d follow him anywhere. He grabs your hand and spares a last glance at your still glaring brother, smirking as he leads you to the exit of the ballroom.
Before you can make it past the threshold though, Jake comes to an abrupt stop and lets go of your hand.
“One second.” He quickly breathes out, leaving you standing by the door as he darts back over the bar.
You’re confused for a moment, but you can’t help but giggle to yourself as you watch him look around to make sure no one is watching before he reaches behind the bar, grabbing an unopened bottle of champagne.
He sprints back over to you, once again taking your hand in his free one and speeding out into the hallway, pulling you along with him. You’re unable to keep from laughing, near breathless as you try to keep up with Jake’s long strides in your high heels.
When he finds a dark, empty room towards the back of the venue hall, Jake pulls you inside with him and closes the door. Before you know it, your back is pressed against it, hitting the hard wood with a thud as Jake crashes his lips against yours, kissing you breathless.
Catching your plush bottom lip between both of his, one of his hands finds your waist in the dark, the other still holding onto the neck of the champagne bottle. You kiss him back with just as much fervor, reaching a hand up into Jake’s blonde hair and tugging lightly, pulling a soft groan from him.
The two of you move in sync, lips pressing together at an increasing speed and intensity until your lungs are burning from the lack of oxygen. Jake pulls back for some air and both of your chests are heaving, light pants escaping your lips as you stare at each other in the dark of the room.
When you look down and catch a glimpse of the bottle still in Jake’s grasp, you let out a breathless chuckle.
“You forgot the glasses.”
He follows your gaze and laughs along with you, though it comes out as more of a pant.
“Shit, yeah. Maybe we can find some in here, if I can just find a light…” Jake trails off, his body leaving your personal space and pulling the warmth of him along with it. You’re left standing by the door, feeling cold and already missing his presence and his weight against you as he goes off in search of the lights.
It’s a quick search, after about only 30 seconds, Jake finds a lamp on a table in the corner of the room. He switches it on, casting the room in a soft, dim golden light.
No longer bathed in darkness, you now see that the room you ended up in is another suite like the ones the bridal party had used to get ready that morning. A couple of fancy olive green velvet couches spread throughout the space, a few vanity mirrors along the far wall, a door leading to a bathroom at the back.
You take a seat on one of the lavish couches and remove your heels, feet aching a bit after the long day. You pull your legs up onto the couch as Jake goes on the hunt for champagne glasses. After a brief and unsuccessful search, Jake joins you on the couch.
“No luck.” His playful pout makes you giggle as he plops down onto the cushion next to you.
“Fuck it!” Jake exclaims as he turns the champagne bottle away from you to open it, a small gasp escaping your lips as he sends the cork flying somewhere across the room.
He hands the bottle over to you with a grin.
“Ladies first.” And there’s that wink again. As you take a swig from the bottle, Jake pulls your feet up into his lap, and you nearly choke on the fizzy liquid in surprise when his fingers begin to massage your calves. Once the initial shock wears off, you can’t stop the contented sigh that escapes your lips at the feeling.
When you’ve taken a few sips, you hand the bottle back over to Jake, fingers brushing as he takes it from your grasp. His eyes remain on your face as he takes a big swig of the champagne and you can feel a blush beginning to heat up your face.
Setting the bottle down on the floor, Jake tugs your legs closer to him again, this time pulling until you’re nearly sitting in his lap and drawing a little yelp from you. Your face is inches away from his and in the dim lamplight you can see that his eyes are blown wide, mostly black with only a hint of that pretty green visible.
Jake reaches a hand toward the back of your neck, gently running his fingers between your shoulder blades and down your upper back, bare due to the low backing of your dress. Grazing your skin with a featherlight touch before curling his fingers around the nape of your neck and pulling you in to kiss him again.
The taste of champagne is prevalent as Jake attaches his lips to yours. His other hand moves to your waist to help guide you fully onto his lap. Your own hands slide along his chest over the soft fabric of his suit jacket and up to his broad shoulders, fingers gripping lightly at the soft strands of hair at the nape of his neck. Your lips move softly against his, finding a rhythm and allowing yourself to get lost in it.
Jake’s hands squeeze at your waist, thumbs just barely grazing the underside of your breasts through your dress as he deepens the kiss. Pulling you impossibly closer as he nips at your bottom lip, eliciting a quiet whine from you. His tongue tracks along the seam of your lips and you’re quick to part them for him, allowing his tongue to work softly against yours.
You and Jake relish in the taste of one another mixed with the sweetness of the bubbly alcohol, your movements becoming more fervent. Your head grows dizzy as Jake groans into your mouth when your fingers gently tug at the hair at his nape.
Jake feels his cock twitch in his pants when he pulls away and sees your hazy expression, all hooded lids and kiss-swollen lips. He presses a trail of sweet kisses to your jaw and chin, working his way down to your neck. His nose grazes the column of your throat, inhaling the sweet, flowery scent of your perfume.
Your head tilts back on a quiet moan, granting Jake more access as his mouth begins to work at the side of your neck. Sucking and biting at the soft skin, teeth sure enough to leave a mark. With your hands still in his hair, you pull Jake back up to your lips, kissing him ardently as your hips involuntarily rut against the growing bulge in his trousers.
You both moan at the friction as Jake’s hand moves to cup your cheek, fingers tangling in your intricately styled hair. As his tongue glides against yours, you feel him begin to pull at the pins, loosening your hair from its confines until it flows freely around your shoulders. He pulls back from the kiss to look at you with a look that screams pure lust.
“Fuck, I’ve been wanting to do that all night.” Jake breathes as he runs a hand through your silky locks. Since he first laid eyes on you, he’d wondered how you’d look with your hair all messy and free, your perfect little up-do unraveled. And fuck, does he like what he sees.
With a newfound sense of need, you reattach your lips to Jake’s, sliding your tongue into his mouth as your hands begin to push the suit jacket off of his shoulders. He shrugs it the rest of the way off, letting out a whispered ‘fuck’ as your lips trail down his sharp jawline to his neck as your nimble fingers begin to work on untying his tie, and straight to unbuttoning his dress shirt after that.
When his upper half is free of clothes, you tease soft, barely-there kisses along Jake’s shoulders and the hard plains of his chest. Eager to touch more of your skin, Jake’s hands make their way down to your thighs, changing positions to pull you underneath him on the velvet couch, your legs wrapped around his hips. He sits up and runs an index finger lightly under the thin strap of your dress.
“Can I?” You nod fervently in response to his question and Jake gently pushes the straps off of your shoulders.
You sit up and Jake pecks your lips, his hands moving behind you to unzip the top of your dress. The soft satin falls down around your torso, revealing a strapless lacy bra that matches the pastel purple of your dress. His hands reach again behind your back, making quick work of unclasping your bra to reveal your perfect, supple breasts.
Jake takes a moment to admire the beautiful picture that’s in front of him before he leans down to kiss at your chest. His lips work softly at the swell of your breast, thumb and index finger coming to pinch at one nipple while his mouth engulfs the other. The moan it pulls from you is music to Jake’s ears.
Your fingers tangle in his hair once again as his tongue swirls your nipple, quiet whimpers escaping you as he kisses and suckles at the skin. His mouth travels to your other breast, leaving a trail of kisses along the way before sucking the bud between his lips, tongue working softly at it until it forms a hardened peak.
Satisfied with his work, Jake grazes his teeth against your nipple, evoking a breathy gasp from you and a tug on his hair as he nips at the sensitive bud before releasing it. You feel a gush of arousal at your core as his mouth starts to trail lower down your torso. Kissing softly at your sternum, your ribcage, and just above your navel.
Goosebumps form along your skin as Jake lowers himself down on the couch, strong hands gliding up the sides of your thighs. Pushing the silky fabric of your dress along with them until it’s bunched up at the middle of your torso, revealing pretty, sheer lace panties that you’re sure are probably soaked through.
Jake presses a kiss to your hip bone, looking up at you with wild eyes awaiting your permission. You swallow hard, nodding your head frantically. You need him to touch you before you go insane.
“Please, Jake,” You hardly recognize the breathless, whiny voice that comes out of your mouth. “Need you.”
Jake runs a finger along your slit over the damp fabric of your panties, your desperate, breathy cries painting a smirk on his lips. He doesn’t need to be told twice.
He teasingly bumps his finger into your clit just to hear you whine before his fingers grip onto your waistband, pulling the lacy fabric torturously slow down your thighs. He sits back on his knees, pressing a kiss to your knee as he helps get your underwear the rest of the way down your legs.
When they fall to the floor, Jake repositions himself on the couch between your thighs, lifting one of them over his shoulder. His lips make a trail up the inside of your thigh, kissing and nipping at the soft skin and enjoying the way your breath catches as he inches closer to where you need him most, before ultimately moving back and starting again on the other thigh. Your fingers tug at his roots, chest breathless and heaving as you wait for Jake to just do something.
You moan out loudly in surprise as your wish is granted, Jake’s tongue licking a broad stripe through your folds. Your fingers tighten in his hair when he presses a kiss to your clit. He pulls back for a moment and just stares at your cunt, pretty and glistening just for him.
You’d be embarrassed at the attention if it weren’t for the look of complete awe on his gorgeous face as he gazes at your core. His tongue glides through your folds again, collecting your arousal.
“Mm, so fuckin’ sweet, baby. Just like you.” And with that, Jake sucks your clit between his lips, drawing a loud cry from your lips as he applies a firm pressure. He alternates between suckling the sensitive bud and dipping his tongue into your hole, tasting the wetness that continues to flow at his ministrations.
As his lips wrap around your clit once more, you feel one of Jake’s fingers begin to tease at your entrance. Gathering the wetness there before the digit enters you, he lets out a low groan as you clench around it. He works his finger in and out, adding in a second to help stretch you out and get you ready for his cock.
Jake can hear your soft whimpers and heavy breathing, he can feel the way your walls clench around his fingers even tighter as he prods at that spongy spot inside of you and he knows that you’re close.
“Gonna come for me, Sweets? You gonna come all over my tongue?” Jake implores with a teasing smirk before he dives back in, tongue replacing his fingers and licking into you.
“Fuck, please, Ja- OHH!” Your plea is cut short as his fingers pinch at your clit once more. Rubbing tight circles in time with his tongue that’s fucking in and out your hole. Jake’s fingers quicken their pace, pressing firmly against your sensitive bud while he devours you, and you fall over the edge with a sharp cry that borders on being a scream.
“So fucking good for me.” Jake mutters against your center, his tongue lapping up your release while his fingers still gently swirl your clit and work you through your orgasm. He licks up every bit of your sweetness, rutting his hips against the velvety couch cushion to gain some friction on his still-clothed cock that strains under the fabric of his pants, as he watches you writhe under his tongue, hands tugging at his roots hard as your loud cries turn into soft whimpers.
Jake only lets up when your shaky hand tries to push his head away from your center, the pleasure becoming too much. Leaving one final kiss to your inner thigh, he pulls back, lips and chin glistening with your release.
You tug at Jake’s hair again, guiding his head back up to be level with yours. You pull him into a bruising kiss, moaning into his mouth as you taste yourself on his tongue. Your hands travel down to unbuckle Jake’s belt and open the button of his trousers, one hand dipping into the waistband to cup him over his boxers.
Jake grunts above you as you palm at his hard length, his own hands reaching down to help you remove his pants.
Only able to get them about halfway down his legs from his position hovering over you, Jake pulls back and stands from the couch. He pulls his dress pants and underwear down in one swift motion. Your mouth waters at the sight of him, his cock long and hard, the tip red and dripping with precum.
Before he can return to his previous position kneeling above you, you too stand up, pushing Jake back onto the couch in a seated position.
“Wha- where ya goin’, darling?” Jake questions you with a breathless chuckle, a bit surprised by the moment of dominance from you. As you drop to your knees in front of him though, he starts to get the hint.
“Just wanna return the favor.” You say it sweetly, giving him your best doe eyes. Jake’s hand comes up to cup your cheek, caressing the skin softly and letting out a desperate groan as you position yourself between his thick thighs.
You trail your nails along the skin of his thighs, leaving light pink marks in your wake as you tease your way to the apex of his thighs. When you finally wrap your hand around him, you feel Jake’s cock twitch in your grasp and look up at him with a sweet smile.
Minx. Jake swears he could cum right then and there.
Your hand rubs along the base of Jake’s cock and up to his tip, collecting the precum dribbling from his slit and dragging it down his length to aid in your movements. Your grip tightens around him just slightly, and you enjoy the desperate sound he makes as you lean down to place a kiss to his weeping tip.
Hand still cupping your cheek, Jake’s fingers move into your hair as you kitten lick at his tip before taking him into your mouth. Your tongue swirls around the ridge of his head, sucking softly and moving further down onto his length. You take as much of him into your mouth as you can, eagerly sucking his shaft and using your hand to rub what you can’t fit.
Your fingers move to grip one of Jake’s strong thighs as you take him as far down your throat as you possibly can, blinking up at him with wide doe eyes. Your cheeks suction around his length and Jake chokes on a loud moan, his fingers tightening in your hair when his tip hits the back of your throat.
“Fuck, fuck.” He gently pulls you off of him with a groan, a string of saliva still connecting your swollen pink lips to the head of his cock. Jake knew he was getting close and he didn’t want to finish before feeling your sweet cunt wrapped around him.
“Need to be inside you, darlin’.” Jake practically begs as he pulls you up to your feet. He finishes unzipping your dress that’s still hanging down around your middle the rest of the way, watching the fabric pool around your feet before guiding you to sit atop his thighs. Fully naked and secure in his lap, you wrap your arms around his neck and lead Jake into another fiery kiss.
“Need you, Jake.” You breathe against his lips, noses rubbing together as you nod your head against him.
You grind your hips down against his in an effort to convey your need. Jake’s hand reaches down to grip his cock, running it along your soaked folds and bumping your clit with his tip, teasing you both as you moan against each other’s lips.
“Shit… I don’t have a condom.” Jake realizes, voice sounding defeated as he looks down and  watches the head of his cock tease at your clit once more.
“Fuck.” The word comes out of your mouth as a whine.
Fuck was right. All that hoping and planning to get lucky tonight, and you hadn’t had the forethought to bring protection? Whoops.
Lucky for you, you’d been on the pill for a couple of years now, having started taking it when you were with your ex. You place a gentle kiss to Jake’s cheek before pulling back to look in his eyes as you speak.
“I’m on the pill. And I haven’t been with anyone in a while, so… I’m good.” You chuckle sheepishly, brows furrowing slightly as you wait for Jake’s response.
Jake nods his head eagerly. “Fuck-yeah, I’m all good too! If you’re sure…” he wants to be sure that you’re comfortable.
He can’t help but grin as you nod your head just as eagerly, but that grin is quickly wiped off Jake’s face.
Your brother can never find out about this… Rooster would actually kill him. It’s bad enough that he’s sleeping with Bradley’s little sister on his wedding day, let alone without protection.
It’s an afterthought that Jake realizes he must’ve accidentally spoken aloud, as the giggles that erupt from you in response to the words spoken under his breath hit his ears.
“Yes.” You plant a kiss on his jaw. “I’m sure, Jake.” Another kiss. “Need you.” Your lips move to peck his hungrily.
His thoughts are immediately pulled away from Rooster and Jake couldn’t be happier. Not only does he get to be inside of you, but he gets to feel you wrapped around him with no barrier in between.
Your blatant need for him only inflates Jake’s ego, and makes him impossibly harder. His hand cups the side of your neck, pressing his lips firmly to yours one more time before leaning back to look at you with a smug smirk.
“Go ahead. Take it, baby.” Jake drawls as he leans back, arms stretched along the back of the couch, his words have you clenching around nothing.
At his request, you lift your hips slightly, taking Jake’s hard cock into your hand and lining it up with your entrance. He watches in awe as you sink down around his length slowly, the both of you hissing simultaneously. You at the stretch, and him the tightness of your walls enveloping him.
Your hands hold onto Jake’s shoulders for support as you take him, inch by inch, until he’s fully seated inside of you. You both let out quiet curses at the feeling. You’re not sure you’ve ever felt so full, but your slickness makes for easy movement once you get used to the stretch.
You lift your hips until just the tip of his cock is still inside of you, before slowly sinking back down and grinding your hips against his.
“Fuck. Feel so good, darlin.” Jake groans as your muscles clench around him and you let out a quiet whimper in response.
You bury your face in the crook of Jake’s neck as you begin to ride him, moving up and down his length as your hips work to find a rhythm. Jake groans as you begin to pick up the pace, his hands moving to your hips to help guide your movements.
When you’ve found a good rhythm, Jake plants his feet firmly on the floor beneath him and begins to thrust up into you. Pulling your hips firmly against his with every thrust, hitting that spot inside of you that makes you cry out in ecstasy.
The soft whimpers you let out against the skin of his neck are driving Jake’s movements, the sweet, open-mouthed kisses littered against the column of his throat spurring him on. He grunts as your walls tighten around him in a vice-like grip on a particularly hard thrust.
Jake can tell you’re getting tired as your thighs begin to tremble over his, hips stuttering and losing their tempo as you rise and sink yourself down on his cock.
His hands wrap around your thighs, lifting you off of him and you whine in protest at the loss of the fullness of him. With you still hovering over his lap, arms wrapped around his neck, Jake easily flips the two of you over, gently placing you so that you’re lying back on the velvety couch. He hovers over you, knees digging into the cushions and he leans down to attach his lips to yours as he lines up with your entrance again.
You moan into the kiss as Jake bottoms out inside of you, your velvety walls welcoming him in with ease. Jake lifts one of your thighs around his hips, your leg going to wrap around his back automatically as he plows into you, the head of his cock hitting that spot deep inside of you again and it has you seeing stars.
The room is filled with the sounds of heavy breathing, Jake’s soft grunts and your blissful cries mingling together. Skin slapping against skin as Jake drives into you, the sound of your growing wetness as his cock moves in and out at a rapid pace. Jake leans down to suck a nipple into his mouth as he fucks you, nipping lightly at the skin.
“Jake…fuck! Please…” You’re babbling almost incoherently, the fucked-out look on your face sending Jake into a frenzy.
“I’ve got you, honey. Want you to come for me.” He mumbles against the skin of your chest as he continues to fuck you, one hand gripping onto the top of the couch for support.
He can sense you’re getting close and he applies a firm thumb to your clit, the pressure willing another moan from deep within you. Your fingers lock onto the strands of his hair as his fingers begin to circle the sensitive bundle of nerves.
Jake quickens the pace of his thrusts, and his hand moves to grab the leg that’s wrapped around his waist, instead pushing your knee up to your chest so he can plunge into you deeper. The new angle combined with the consistent pressure on your clit has you screaming out, and you pray that no one walks down the hall past this room right now because they’d definitely hear you.
The sensation of Jake’s thumb and forefinger harshly pinching your clit sends you over the edge, a loud, broken cry escaping your throat as he fucks you through it. His length continues to move in and out of you, hips never slowing their pace. The overstimulation leaves you a whimpering mess, nails clawing into Jake’s shoulder as he searches for his own high.
Jake is nearing his end too, the tightness of your walls constricting around his cock as you writhe and whimper underneath him makes his hips stutter as he slams into you. With a few more thrusts, he reaches his peak with a deep groan. His warm, sticky release coating your walls and you sigh blissfully at the feeling. Jake’s hips slow, not stopping fully until he’s spent, wanting to fill you up with every last drop of his cum.
Once he’s sure that you’ve milked him of every last bit, Jake pulls out of you gently and you whimper at the feeling. Missing the fullness of him already, a sigh escapes your lips as a mixture of his release and yours begins to dribble out between your thighs.
Jake moves to flip the two of you over so that you’re lying on top of him, your head resting upon his chest. You can feel his still-fast heartbeat against your ear, getting slower by the minute as he recovers from his high.
Your own heart is racing too and your mind is hazy as you wind down, you’re not sure that anyone has ever fucked you so good. Jake’s arms wrap around you, one hand reaching up into your hair and gently massaging your scalp as the other softly rubs at the skin of your back.
The two of you lay there for a while, cuddling and quietly talking about everything and nothing. Sharing details about yourselves, wanting to get to know each other a little better.
At some point, you pick up the bottle of champagne from the floor again, still resting on Jake’s chest as you pass it back and forth. Taking sips, both of you pleasantly buzzed—from both the alcohol and the orgasms—as you talk about your jobs, your families, anything and everything that comes to mind.
Eventually, the topic of discussion turns to the events of the day and the wedding, and Jake has you giggling as he makes some joke at your brother’s expense.
Spending time with Jake is easy. You feel giddy, yet comfortable in his embrace and his cocky-but-charming personality hasn’t failed yet to make you smile.
“Maybe we should get married.” The sarcastic tone of Jake’s voice lets you know he’s obviously joking, but his words still have you lifting your head from his bare chest to look up at him, a bit bemused.
“It would make my entire life to see the look on Rooster’s face when he has to tell people that I’m his brother-in-law.” Jake continues, looking down at you with that signature smirk, the mischievous mirth in his eyes eliciting a giggle from you.
Even though he doesn’t know you very well yet, Jake can’t help but think it might actually be pretty nice to be married to someone like you. Sweet, funny, beautiful–and Jake finds he really enjoys spending time with you.
“Yeah, I’d pay good money to see that.” You agree, your body being gently bounced around with the movement of Jake’s chest beneath you as he joins you in your laughter.
“Ok, so I know it’s a little soon for marriage, but I would like to take you out.” For the first time since you met him earlier that day, Jake actually seems a bit… nervous? The smile on his face is a bashful one and you find it’s adorable. From the stories your brother had told about the cocky pilot, you never would’ve thought you’d find him so endearing.
“Like… in the murdering sense?” You try to alleviate his nerves with a bit of humor and Jake’s subsequent deadpan stare has you giggling again. You lean up to press a kiss to his jaw. He pretends to be annoyed by your antics, but you can tell he’s trying not to smile.
“On a date.” He drawls with a dramatic eye roll. You suck in a breath and plaster a pensive look on your face, pretending for a moment like you actually need to think about his offer. You exhale with an exaggerated sigh.
“Ok.” Your arms tighten around Jake’s torso and you press a kiss to his chest.
“Yeah?” Jake tries to keep his cool, but he has a hard time hiding the excitement in his voice. He knows you can probably feel the way his heart has sped up beneath your cheek that’s resting against his skin too.
“Yes. I’d love to go out with you.” You lift your head to gaze up at him once more, trying to bite back your grin. But Jake’s thumb reaches up to release your bottom lip from between your teeth, gently running over the tender skin as he gazes down at you with those glittering green eyes. Yeah, you could get used to that.
The two of you stay wrapped up together on the sofa a little while longer, still talking quietly so as to not disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the ambiently-lit suite. You’re still lying on Jake’s chest, your legs intertwined with his, lulled into a hazy state of comfort as one of his hands lightly runs through your hair, lazily twirling the locks around his finger. His other hand is softly tracing patterns onto the bare skin of your back.
You and Jake have been gone a long while now, and you know if you don’t return to the party soon, Bradley is going to come looking for you. Deciding you’d rather not have your brother find you in such a compromising position with one of his friends, you begrudgingly lift your head from Jake’s chest.
“We should probably head back out there.” You say with little enthusiasm. “My brother’s gonna think you kidnapped me and send out a search party.”
You grumble, pouting as Jake’s hand lightly caresses over your hair. Cute.
He laughs at your sour expression and hums in agreement, sitting up on the couch. The movement of his body taking you with him as you’re still wrapped around him.
Jake ponders if he should maybe tell you about Bradley warning all of the men at his wedding away from you—but ultimately decides against it as you seem so content, so at ease with him. He didn’t want to ruin your good mood or cause problems between you and your brother. And, he really likes you. He doesn’t want to fuck this up.
Maybe he’d tell you one day when Bradley is really pissing him off, he thinks to himself with a smirk.
Jake helps you to your feet before standing up himself and stepping back into his boxers. He tells you to wait a moment while he runs into the bathroom that’s at the back of the room.
While you’re in the midst of securely clasping your bra back over your chest, Jake returns with a damp cloth, kneeling down to gently clean up his cum that’s now dried down the inside of your thighs, leaving a soft kiss to the skin of your hip.
Once you’re all cleaned up, Jake helps you step into your lace underwear, bracing yourself with a hand on his shoulder for balance as your legs still feel a bit like Jell-O after the earth-shattering orgasms he had given you.
He stands to help you back into your bridesmaid’s dress, leaning down to place featherlight kisses to your shoulder blades as he closes up the zipper. Jake even helps smooth down your hair—surely a mess from your earlier activities and his hands running through it—leaving a chaste kiss to your lips before he moves to re-dress himself. This time forgoing his tie in favor of stuffing it into his pocket.
With your heels strapped around your ankles once more, you let Jake lead you out of the suite. Your hand joined with his and your cheek resting against his shoulder as you navigate your way, side by side, back to the ballroom.
When you reach the double doors, you tug at Jake’s hand to stop him before he can open them. The blonde’s cute, inquisitive look reminds you of a golden retriever puppy and it makes your heart flutter. You reach up to cup his cheeks, pulling him in for a brief, but passionate kiss.
“Sorry, I just really wanted to do that again.” You tell him with a nervous laugh and he lets out a satisfied groan.
“Don’t be sorry, sweetheart.” Jake pulls you back in and you can feel the smirk on his lips as he attaches them to yours. The two of you spend the next few minutes just standing there, making out outside of the entrance to the ballroom.
Mouths moving languidly together, and you don’t hesitate to grant Jake’s tongue access when it runs along the seam of your lips. Tongues swirling lazily around one another trying to memorize the taste. When you finally pull back, your lips are swollen, and both you and Jake are beaming.
The reception is coming to an end, and you make it back into the slowly emptying ballroom just in time to see the happy newlyweds making their rounds about the room, accepting congratulations and thanking their guests for coming.
As they come across you and Jake, Natasha is all smiles while Bradley’s expression drops into one of annoyance, his hazel-eyed glare directed at Jake.
Never one to be intimidated by his best frenemy, Jake’s mouth forms into that distinctive smirk, extending the hand that wasn’t holding yours toward your brother.
“Congratulations, Rooster.” Jake speaks confidently. The two of them shake hands, not dissimilar to how they did after the success of the Uranium mission. Except this time, Bradley isn’t smiling.
By the happy look on your face and the fact that you’re not glaring at him—or trying to hit him—Bradley realizes that Jake must not have told you about his earlier warning to his groomsmen. Though he’s still annoyed with Jake for going against his wishes, he guesses that’s for the best. Maybe Natasha was right.
“Thanks, man.” Bradley’s face softens just barely.
“But, just know, if you hurt my little sister, I won’t hesitate to shoot your plane out of the sky. We clear?” Your brother continues, still shaking Jake’s hand all the while. Natasha watches the whole exchange, trying not to laugh.
“Bradley-!” Eyes widening, you try to intercept but Jake stops you, giving your hand a light squeeze.
“No, no. It’s okay, Sweets.” You can hear the mirth in his voice when he says it, knowing he’s going to get a reaction out of Bradley.
“SWEETS?!” Your brother all but shrieks, ripping his hand away from Jake’s as if he’s been burned and Natasha is no longer able to hold back her laughter. The pouty glare he gives her in return ends up pulling a snicker out of you too. Jake chuckles haughtily and wraps an arm around your shoulders before addressing your brother again.
“I’m not gonna do anything to hurt her, Bradshaw. I promise. You have my word.” You smile sweetly up at Jake, delighted by his words.
Your brother grumbles in agreement, recognizing the sincerity in his friend’s voice in that moment, before the two of them shake hands once more. Then, Jake offers the bride a hug and his congratulations, and tells you he’ll give you a moment with you brother, that he’ll be waiting for you by the exit.
With Jake making his exit, your brother’s face finally softens as he turns his attention to you.
That is, until he glances down a bit and you know that he’s clocked the very obvious hickey blooming on the side of your neck when his expression hardens again. You can swear you see his eye twitch and you have to refrain from laughing. Luckily, for both of your sakes, he doesn’t bring it up.
Bradley just sighs before shaking his head. For the first time since the breakup, his little sister looks genuinely happy and if that’s the case, then he’s happy too.
“Hangman… really?” He scrunches his nose and at that, you simply shrug at him with an amused grin.
Your brother groans, “I don’t know what happened, and I don’t wanna know.”
“Deal.” The two of you share a laugh and Bradley pulls you into a tight bear-hug, which you return gratefully.
“Love you, sis.” He murmurs into the crown of your hair. “Love you too, Bradley.”
Natasha watches the sweet moment between her new husband and sister-in-law with a smile.
“I’m really happy for you, big bro. And so proud. Mom and Dad would be too.” Your arms tighten around him as you quietly deliver the sentiment.
You turn your gaze toward Natasha to let her know that you’re now addressing her as well. “Congratulations!”
When Bradley releases you from his embrace, Nat pulls you in for a hug as well. With that, they bid you goodnight and make your way back over to Jake who’s waiting for you by the ballroom doors.
Bradley opens his arm for his wife to step under, which Natasha does gladly, her own arm draping around Bradley’s waist as his moves to wrap around her shoulders. The couple watches on as you cross the room to reach the cockiest member of the Dagger squad.
“I actually think they’re kinda cute together.” Natasha’s tone is a jesting one, but there’s definitely some truth to her statement. Bradley just tilts his head up toward the ceiling, eyes clenched shut as he groans in response.
With the festivities coming to a close, you find yourself incredibly tired. After such a long day–and all the exertion with Jake that evening, you’re more than ready for a good night’s sleep. Fortunately for you, everyone was staying in the hotel at which the reception was held, so it wasn’t a long commute.
Despite your increasing exhaustion though, you were reluctant to bid Jake goodnight.
“So… I guess, if you want, you could walk me to my room? Or…” You trail off, leaving the ball in his court. A tad nervous now, blinking up at him with a bright-eyed, hopeful expression, unsure if Jake will get the hint.
But he definitely does, and the expectant look on your beautiful face makes him smile. What you don’t know is that Jake isn’t quite ready for his time with you tonight to come to an end either.
“Or… you could come back to mine?” He finishes the sentence for you, his grin morphing into more of a smirk, but his tone remains sincere. Placing your hands on his chest, you lean up to peck Jake’s lips.
“I’d love to.” You speak softly against his lips and Jake can feel you smiling. “Just don’t tell my brother.”
Your cheeky remark has Jake letting out a throaty chuckle, his breath warming your cheek before he briefly presses his lips to yours more firmly.
“How else am I gonna piss him off?” Jake jests and you retreat from the kiss, playfully smacking his chest. Shaking your head as the two of you share another laugh. His hands move to slide up the bare skin of your arms as you pull back and Jake can feel the goosebumps forming there.
He removes his suit jacket, leaving him in just his dress shirt, and carefully drapes it over your shoulders. The coat dwarfs your smaller frame, and Jake decides he loves the way you look all wrapped up in his clothes.
“Come on, Sweets. Let’s get you to bed.” Jake softly drawls. The look you give him is one of pure adoration as he takes your hand in his and leads you out into the halls of the hotel.
And though you’re most definitely tired, you have an inkling you’d be more than okay with spending a couple more hours wide awake with Jake when you get up to his room.

There's this video of a couple eating with friends and when the girl bend down under the table to take something she dropped her so put his hand on the corner of the table so she wouldn't hurt herself on her way up without interrupting his conversation with the guy in front of him. Don't know about you but it's 100% flyboy Jake to me
i know which video this is anon! and it is realllllllly cute, also 100% Flyboy Jake!
ft. Phoenix, Halo and Penny + mentions of Fritz, Yale and Harvard because they are all <3
Phoenix and Halo lean against the bar counter, Penny on the other side of the counter, her elbows and forearms resting flat on the counter top; the three women with their eyes fixed on the end of the long table of Naval Aviators where Jake, yourself, Coyote, Fritz. Yale, and Harvard are seated.
“Watch,” Halo mutters, while pressing down on her phone screen, shooting a text off to Fritz who is seated at the end of the table on your right. He gets it, eyes darting down to his phone which is flat on the table, and shifts his elbow, stealthily knocking your small purse off the table.
The three women watch as Fritz gasps an apology, to which you respond with a small smile and shake of your head, before you bend to reach down towards the floor for the purse. Then it happens; they see Jake’s right hand dart out almost instantly, smoothly from your left to cover the corner of the table as you duck beneath, all without a break in the conversation he is holding with Harvard and Yale who are seated across the both of you.
“Well would you look at that,” Phoenix mutters with a brow raised in slight amusement as Penny chuckles with a shake of her head.
“Told you,” Halo says smugly as she pockets her phone.
The three women watch as you dart your head up, placing your purse back flat on the table. They see you accept Fritz’s second apology with a wave and shake of your head, as Jake drops his hand to your thigh momentarily, before shifting his hand over to rest on the back of your chair.
“He’s that way during football as well,” Halo says matter of factly, “he watches her out of the corner of his eye even if they aren’t on the same team, gives her space but is always ready to take anyone out for her.”
“Sucker,” Phoenix snorts, as the three women grin wildly.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunlight falls down from the azure sky like a relentless, yellow river. The California heat is pure and spiteful, enough to dot your hairline with sweat and make you occasionally fan yourself. It's new to you. But the heat is good, though--you're going to soak in all the warmth you can before you have to go back to your cavernous house, the one with the unpacked boxes and uncomfortably immaculate tile floors.
Moving houses is always the worst part for you. Not even the packing and unpacking and organizing and grocery shopping, but how stale everything feels. Rooms that are bare. Walls that are empty. Windows that are fingerprint-free. Cabinets without crumbs. Rugs without teething toys and swaddles. Floors without mud.
Everything feels cold at the new house. And it will for a while--you know that now after having moved so many times in the past few years.
From where Jake is standing, just a bit closer to the water with your babbling son in his arms, he watches you. You're laid out on a beach towel, a new one with the tag still on it, and your eyes are closed as you sunbathe. For one of the first time since moving back to California--to Fighter Town, USA--you look restful. Peaceful.
"Look at mama," he says to your son, a smile tugging on his lips. He's bouncing where he stands, the sun beating down on his shoulders. "Isn't she pretty, huh?"
Your son babbles, little pink tongue poking out as he grins toothlessly at Jake, squinting at the sun. He adjusts his straw hat--the adorably small one that makes his heart squeeze every time--and presses a soft kiss to his feathery eyebrows.
"She looks so happy, doesn't she, baby? Doesn't she?" He asks, grinning. "Mama's what we call solar-powered."
Your sun grins back--an identical, squinty-eyed, wide grin. And when Jake laughs, your son echoes him.
"Twins," you whisper to yourself when the warm breeze carries the sound of your boys to you. And then you sigh contentedly, sinking further into the sand. "My boys."
"Oh, we're making her smile," Jake sing-songs. He tickles your son's belly and his laughter erupts from his wet lips like a sweet song. "Just look at that!"
"I can hear you!" You call, grinning.
Cupping your hand over your eyes, squinting to see Jake and your son. And there they are, watching you, grinning the same grin. Your tall, broad husband and your little, chubby baby. Your heart couldn't get any fuller if you tried it--you're certain of it.
"Oh, we've been caught!" Jake says, gasping. He looks at your son and your son looks at him, babbling and giggling and slobbering. "Quick! Distract her! Do something cute!"
At all the attention and enthusiasm from his father, your son dissolves in giggles. They're deep and hearty, straight from his belly.
"It worked," you call to them, tongue swollen with affection.
"Knew it would," he says back, high-fiving your sons curled hand. "We make a good team, bud."
Jake turns to look out at the water--the endless blue and the creamy foam. He's missed California, always finds himself dreaming about it. He glances at you again--your smooth skin, your slack face. He's glad that there is at least sunshine here. Enough to keep you warm.
He wonders, as your son reaches up to tug on Jake's sunglasses, if this is where your children will grow up. Will they dip their toes in the water after school? Will they go surfing with their friends on the weekends? Will they have an extensive seashell collection? Will there always be sand in the carpet? Will their hair be forever permeated with saltwater? Will their skin always be sun kissed and warm?
And you--will you adapt to California? Will you bask in the sun after dropping the kids off at school? Will you find all the good wine spots for date night? Will you wear flow dresses and always have bare feet? Will you keep sunscreen in your purse and always have a few pairs of sunglasses on your person at all times?
More than anything, in this single moment, Jake wants to stay for a while. No more moving--for himself, for your son, for you. Especially for you.
𓇼 𓇼 𓇼
There is sand everywhere: in your hair that is still damp with saltwater, wedged between your skin and the wet swimsuit you're still wearing, underneath Jake's fingernails, between your son's toes.
It squishes underneath your feet as you bounce softly, holding your son in your arms.
"Easy goes it," you whisper softly to your son, cradling his soft head as you ease his body--which is heavy with sleep--down onto the mattress of his crib. You know you're going to have to shake the sheets out once he wakes up--sand is still crumbling out of his hair. "Poor baby. Couldn't even make it through a bath, huh? Daddy tuckered you out with all that swimming, huh? Didn't he?"
The room is dark--blackout curtains are always the first thing Jake installs in the nursery--and cool, the sound machine int he corner lulling ocean sounds aloud.
Jake stands in the doorway, leaning up against the frame, still in just his swimming trunks. He watches you caress your son's pudgy cheek, watches you bend at the hips to kiss his face like you always do. His heart squeezes when he glances around the mostly-bare room. He thinks all the heat in this room, every bit of it, must be coming from you and your love.
For a long, long moment, you just watch your baby. You see so little of yourself in your own child, which you used to think would bother you. But you love Jake so much--an overwhelming, unmeasurable amount--that it only feels natural for that love to multiply in the form of a smaller version of him. And he's there, sleeping on his seashell-printed sheets, his lips parted as he drools.
"C'mon, mama," Jake whispers to you. "We've got a hot shower calling our names."
Stroking his soft hair, you inhale all the salt and sun on his skin. Your sweet, sweet boy with sand still in his hair and messing his sheets. Your heart swells at the simple notion of something being genuinely messy for the first time since moving.
"I'm coming," you whisper. "Just give me a minute."

Jake watches you navigate your way back to the table with a scowl; it’s just like you to make an untimely entrance. He sets your fresh cocktail down beside your first, half-empty one, and takes his seat. You arrive in silence and sit down without looking at either Bradley or Jake.
“Everything alright?” Bradley asks, trying to mask the concern in his voice by clearing his throat a couple of times.
You place your hand on the stem of the new glass before you, twisting it between your fingers. “Thanks for the drink,” you say stoically.
Jake starts chewing on the inside of his lip, hoping that Bradley isn’t stupid enough to disclose who’d gotten it for you.
Bradley shoots Jake a furtive glance before looking back at you. “What’s going on, Y/N?”
“Uh,” you say. “I’m going to get going soon.”
Jake watches you carefully as your fingers slide up and down the stem. The disappointment he suffers at the thought of you leaving is downright distressing considering how displeased he’d been with your attendance in the first place. Moreover, he can’t decide if he’s angrier with himself or with you for the physical reaction that accompanies this unexpected flood of feelings. And so, before he can stop himself, Jake makes the following ridiculous bid for your attention: “Already? We’ve hardly scratched the surface of the environment disaster at the heart of international trade. Thought you could draw up a list of tropical fruit that I’m never to bring up in conversation again.”
Bradley glances over at him with elevated eyebrows and a barely concealed smirk for which Jake nearly kicks him under the table.
“And once we’ve thoroughly unpacked that dilemma,” Jake continues, “there’s a whole slew of domestic issues we could sink our teeth into. We haven’t even begun to discuss public sector corruption!”
You look at Jake sharply. “You want to talk about corruption in the public sector?” you say, your eyes igniting faster than fireworks. “Look no further than the military.”
“I was hoping we could stick to judicial misconduct or the like. You know, keep it from getting too personal,” Jake says with a slight smile that he fights to keep from spreading further.
To your right, he can see Bradley shaking his head with a widening grin that he doesn’t bother hiding.
You nod tauntingly. “Sure, sure,” you reply. “Ignore the blatant abuse of power happening right under your nose.”
Jake smiles smugly. “Ignorance is bliss, darlin’.”
You give him a sour look. “You’re despicable.”
“And you are intolerable,” he retorts, although he’s not truly annoyed; not anymore. Not by a long shot. He’d rather sit here and have you bad mouth him six ways from Sunday than watch you take your leave. “Drink your drink,” he says, almost hoping that his inappropriately commanding tone might spur you on.
You glare at him but bring the glass to your lips and take a sip which he finds exasperatingly sensual.
“Right,” Bradley says. “I’d say that’s my cue.” He lets out a sigh of feigned fatigue as he gets up and stretches his legs.
You eye him curiously while Jake gives him an ominous sort of look. “Where are you going?” you ask.
“Bar,” he says.
“You’re gonna miss our fistfight,” Jake says while you look pointedly at Bradley’s untouched beer.
“Shots,’ he says, answering your silent question. Then, he glances at Jake. “Honestly, my money’s on Y/N but you’ll have to hold off till I get back.”
“I won’t have any,” you say. “Shots.”
“Afraid the booze might make you more agreeable?” Jake quips.
You throw him a harsh glance. “Keep dreaming, cowboy,” you say.
“You’re right, that stick up your ass can’t be helped,” Jake says.
“Hangman!” Bradley shakes his head.
You roll your eyes at Jake and say, “You’ll be happy to know that I’m leaving after this round.”
Jake watches you levelly. “Why would that make me happy?” he asks. Bradley purses his lips and slowly starts to back away from the table.
“Because I’m intolerable?” you say, attempting to imitate Jake’s sarcastic drawl.
Jake laughs. “I meant that in the best way possible.”
“Such a gentleman,” you reply derisively, meeting his gaze across the table.
“I’m not even trying,” he responds with a broad smile.
“Perhaps it’s time to start.”
Jake leans into the table. “Would that make you hate me less?”
You shrug. “I doubt it.”
He laughs, watching you gulp down the rest of your second cocktail. You stand up, swaying slightly on the spot, so he gets out of his seat as well, holding his arm out in case you lose your balance. “You alright?” he asks.
You bring a hand to your head and shut your eyes briefly. “Just a little dizzy.”
Jake walks around the table so that he’s closer to you. “Why’re you leaving?” he asks, his hand hovering near your arm, ready to catch you if you fall. “Am I getting on your nerves?”
You glance up at him with a small chuckle. “You must think the world revolves around you or something.”
Jake grins. “Your world, maybe.”
You shake your head but you’re still wearing a faint smile. “You wish.”
Jake tries not to stare at you too much because the more he does, the less intolerable he seems to find you. In fact, he’s beginning to find you exceptionally tolerable. He could probably tolerate you all night long. Several times, even. He swallows uncomfortably as you take a hold of his forearm to step around him. “Why, then?” he asks, turning his hand palm-up so that he could grasp your fingers before you let go of him.
You lift your gaze to look him in the eye and he nearly loses his own balance. “My boyfriend’s coming to get me,” you say, clearing your throat as you take your hand out of his.
Jake watches you steadily. “Heard he’s a peach.”
You scoff. “You’re one to talk.”
“I’ll walk you to the door,” he says when you veer trying to dodge your own chair.
“I’m fine,” you say.
Jake’s eyes slide up and down your figure as you walk ahead of him. “Not gonna argue with that,” he mutters under his breath.
You either don’t hear him or pretend not to because you continue toward the exit without turning around. He picks up his pace to get the door for you and you give him a disgruntled look in response.
He follows you outside, watching as you make your way toward a white Mustang whose driver he can’t quite make out. He trails after you, trying to curb his mounting distaste for a man he’s never even met.
You glance up at him in surprise when he catches up to you. “Are you still here?”
“It ain’t my fault your boyfriend can’t even be bothered to step out of his car to get your door,” Jake says, pulling on the handle of the passenger door. He bends down to peek into the vehicle. “Howdy,” he says with a broad grin.
Your boyfriend looks up at him with a mixture of confusion and suspicion which Jake finds amusing and oddly satisfying.
“Uber?” Jake asks, feeling rather bold.
“Uh,” your boyfriend starts, still puzzled.
“Seresin, move,” you growl, shoving him aside.
“Joking,” Jake says, ducking his head again once you’re inside the car. “Just delivering your crabby companion. Extra temper, hold the affection. Attitude on the side.”
You give him a sour look while your boyfriend furrows his eyebrows. “Jake, shut the fucking door,” you say crossly.
“There’s that extra temper I promised,” he says, winking before finally closing your door.
Jake straightens his back as the Mustang drives away, expelling a long, dramatic sigh. Now that you’ve left, he has an entire evening devoid of futile bickering ahead of him, for which he should be immensely grateful. He watches the car take a turn and disappear into a cloud of dust. Then he watches the dust cloud resentfully for a few moments, thinking that Bradley had been right after all, because your boyfriend does seem like the shithead type.
He sucks his cheeks in with a grimace after his jaw cramps from clenching too hard, and then he makes his way back into the Hard Deck. Bradley is back at the table but there are no shots in sight.
“Thought we were getting hammered,” Jake says, sitting across from his friend.
Bradley looks up at Jake as he takes his seat. “Y/N take off already?”
Jake nods. “Fucking finally.”
Bradley snorts. “Right.”
Jake gives him a bitter look. “You gonna tell me about the boyfriend, or what?”
Bradley squints his eyes at him with a smirk. “You’re dying to know, aren’t you?”
“You’re dying to tell me,” Jake bites back.
Bradley rolls his eyes with a sigh. “He’s just such a fucking dick, man. Goes out late, comes home drunk. Doesn’t tell her where he’s going half the time. She’s constantly calling me because it’s the middle of the night and he’s not home yet.”
Jake narrows his eyes. “Why’s she with this douchebag?”
Bradley shakes his head. “Apparently, she loves him.”
Jake stares at him. “Bullshit.”
But before Bradley can respond, his phone buzzes on the table. He looks down to read the message. “Payback and Fanboy are on their way. Are we going to the club?”
Jake takes a drink of his beer and hisses. “I think I’m gonna head home, actually.”
“What about guys’ night out?” Bradley asks in mild outrage.
Jake shrugs. “Another night. I’m about ready for bed, your girl really tired me out.”
Bradley chuckles. “It’s all that effort you put into pretending to hate her guts.”
Jake rises from his seat. “Look, I don’t hate her, alright?” he says. “I just find her extremely exasperating.”
Bradley grins. “I wonder why.”
“Rooster,” Jake says with a phony smile. “Can it, will ya?”
It’s past midnight when there’s a frantic banging on Jake’s door. He lifts himself off the couch, wondering how Bradley managed to get drunk enough to lose his keys. His roommate is many things, but irresponsible is not one of them.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” he calls, shuffling to the door as the knocking intensifies. He pulls on the door with a tired sigh and freezes upon seeing you on his doorstep.
“Is Bradley here?” you ask, your voice strained. You’re blinking up at him with sparkling eyes.
Jake’s entire body reacts as if your arrival has triggered some sort of fight or flight response: his spine goes rigid; his muscles taut; his jaw set. He flicks on the corridor light and sees that your eyes are red and your cheeks are wet; you’ve been crying. “What happened?” he asks, the tone of his voice sounding much more aggressive than he intends.
You inhale abruptly, clamping your mouth shut to keep it from trembling.
Without waiting for a response, Jake reaches over the threshold to pull you inside. “Get in here,” he says roughly, his hand connecting with the back of your shoulder as he directs you into the house. He shuts the door behind you and then gives you an unyielding look. “Did he do something to you?” he asks sharply.
You shake your head. “Where’s Bradley?” you ask weakly, blinking away your tears as you wipe your face repeatedly with your hand.
“He’s not home,” Jake says, his brows knotted in alarm. “Can you tell me what happened, please?”
You glance up to meet his gaze and it takes every ounce of his self-control to keep from cupping your face in his hands and kissing away every last tear. He clenches his teeth to get a grip on himself, frustrated that you’re uncharacteristically silent at a time when he actually needs you to speak.
Jake takes a step toward you and you lift your face to maintain eye contact. “Either you tell me what the hell happened,” he says dangerously. “Or I’m gonna go find Mustang and ask him myself. And something tells me that my conversation with him won’t be the talking kind.”

Meet Me at the Sea: Chapter Eight
Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Reader

You had always loved mermaids. You had always wondered what it must be like to live as half human and half fish, swimming beneath the blue waves of the sea and singing beautiful songs for everyone to hear. You wondered what it would be like to coast your fingers across the rocks and corals, interacting with the creatures below. Were there cities like Atlantica down there that only the merpeople knew about? Or did they migrate like whales?
“You know mermaids aren’t real, honey, right?” Your mother had asked you one day, brow furrowed in concern. You had let out a sigh that only a thirteen-year-old beginning their journey into the reality of life could give.
“Yeah, Mom,” you had frowned, looking out the window and onto the waters of the lake below. “I know.”
“Have you thought about maybe redecorating your room?” She continued, picking up your porcelain mermaid and eyeing it with vague distaste. You glanced over at her, turning to face her slightly.
“I like my things,” you grumbled, pressing your lips into a thin line. “They’re my treasures. And what’s wrong with liking mermaids and the ocean?”
“Nothing, sweetie,” she had sighed, setting it down. “Maybe it’s just time for you to start thinking about more serious things, is all.”
She gave you one last smile before walking out of the room, leaving you to ponder over her words.
Weeks later, her words still floated in your head, and you had relayed the conversation to your grandmother, your mother’s mother, one day as you sat in her living room. She had scowled, shaking her head and fixing you with a fierce look.
“Now you listen to me, young lady,” she groused. “Your mother means well, but she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. There’s magic in this world, believe you me, and it’s a rare person who continues to believe and see it. You just keep doing what you’re doing, and one day you’ll see the truth.”
Tumblr media
And one day had finally come.
The waves crashed against the shore with a deafening sound, the wind whipping your hair about your face where it rested atop your knees, and the rock beneath you was vaguely damp, causing goosebumps to run up and down your skin. You had been out there for hours, needing time to come to reconcile what you thought you knew with what you now knew.
The scene on the beach earlier that morning replayed in your mind. The song, falling into the water, Mandy. It was a wonder you hadn’t run for the hills.
You had stood on the beach, soaked to the bone as the rest of the group stared at you like some kind of wild animal, like you might lash out at them at the most sudden of movements.
“Skip,” Bradley had started slowly, taking a small step towards where you stood, feet planted as firmly as they could be in the shifting sand. Your shoulders were drawn back, attempting to make yourself seem more confident than you actually were. In truth, you were still terrified, the adrenaline from your near death experience still running through your veins as your eyes darted the small group gathered around. The sun had barely risen above the horizon, and it was an oddly cold, summer morning, and you fought the shiver that threatened to run up your spine. “Honey, it’s not that we don’t think you’re ready to know…”
He trailed off as you narrowed your eyes at him, anger starting to course through you. Bob cleared his throat, drawing your attention to him.
“It’s just that you’ve been through a lot in the past hour,” he explained with a grimace. “We don’t want to overwhelm you.”
“Yeah!” Chirped Mickey. “Besides, you’re still wet, and we wouldn’t want you to get sick or anything.”
“Mickey is right,” Nat smiled gently, “you should get changed out of these clothes.”
She moved to grab your arm, but you shifted away, fixing her with a glare before your eyes once again shifted towards the other members.
“Stop trying to change the subject,” you hissed, your hands tightening into fists at your sides. “Stop treating me like I’m some child.”
Your eyes connected with familiar green ones, and your anger instantly dissipated into a sense of pleading. Jake stared back at you, face unreadable as he took you in. After a moment, he walked towards you, and you didn’t even think about stopping him as he stopped in front of you. He raised a hand, running his thumb lightly over the apple of your cheek, and you felt yourself relax into his touch.
“They’re right,” he said softly. You immediately stiffened, opening your mouth to say something, but he cut you off.
“I promise you, that we will tell you what you want to know. But for now,” he pauses, running his eyes up and down your form, grimacing at the sight of you. “For now, you need to go change into some dry clothes. We can talk more after, okay?”
You stared up at him for a moment, studying him. His eyes bore into yours, not a hint of deceit resting in them. Slowly, you nodded, and he let out a relieved sigh, squeezing your shoulders slightly.
“There’s my good girl,” he smiled, running his hands down your arms before releasing you. You preened at his words, feeling your cheeks warm as you glanced away.
“Okay,” Nat sighed, a relieved smile on her own face. “Now that that’s decided, let’s all head home to change and then we can regroup later.”
Tumblr media
Bob had escorted you back home, leaving before you had finished your shower. So, you had walked, and you found yourself where you sat now, on the rocks just past Jake and Bradley’s house on the beach, the sky a dismal grey as the seagulls cried. No one was answering your texts, and while it annoyed you to no end to know that they were probably trying to come up with a way to get out of telling you, you remained secure in the fact that Jake had promised you they would tell you the truth. You let out a long sigh, trying to ease some of the tension out of your shoulders.
“Wasn’t expecting to find you right here.”
You jumped, whirling around to see the familiar green of Jake’s eyes as he gave you an apologetic smile.
“Sorry,” he murmured sheepishly, moving to sit next to you. His shoulder brushed yours in the process, and you inhaled a gasp, hoping he hadn’t heard you.
“It’s okay,” you assured him. “I was just lost in my thoughts, I guess.”
“Care to share?”
“As if you don’t already know what they were about,” you scoffed, a smile tugging on the corner of your lips. He chuckled, nodding slowly.
“You’re right.”
“What are you doing out here, Jake?” You asked. He let out a breath, rolling his shoulders back before answering.
“The others are still debating on what we should tell you, or what you can handle knowing right now. I snuck out to come and find you.”
The two of you sat in silence for a moment, listening to the different sounds around you. You chewed on your bottom lip, contemplating whether or not to break the calm between the two of you.
“I wasn’t dreaming,” you breathed, peering over at him. “Was I?”
Jake let out a sigh, leaning back against his arms as he continued to stare out into the ocean.
“You’ve heard the stories the older folks tell, right?” He asked finally, meeting your gaze. You nodded slowly, waiting for him to continue.
“Well,” he started, looking back out at the water. “They’re all true.”
A beat passed.
“All of them?” You questioned, looking down and fidgeting with the hem of your shirt. You thought back to all of the things Mrs. Cambroni had told you. “Even the frenzy?”
Jake’s eyes grew wide, and his cheeks turned a brilliant red. He cleared his throat, looking away as he muttered, “Yes, even the frenzy.”
“What’s it like?”
“What?” He blinked, eyes still wide but holding confusion instead of shock.
“What’s the frenzy like,” you pressed, leaning in closer to him. He stared at you for another second before answering.
“It feels like a constant itch underneath my skin. A heat that I can’t dampen no matter what I do. It drives me crazier the older I get.”
“Is it dangerous?” You whisper.
“It can be,” he admitted slowly. “If we don’t take a mate before a certain time, then the magic becomes stronger because there’s nothing to siphon it in to. Mates help with controlling the magic, and our magic grows the older we get. If we don’t take a mate, then the magic will drive us crazy.”
“When does that happen?”
“There’s no real set number of frenzies you go through before it happens. For some, they can’t make it through their third one before they go crazy. For others, it could be their fourth or fifth one.”
“What about you?”
The question hung in the air, and for a second you were worried that you had upset him with how still he was sitting.
“Me?” He chuckled humorlessly, drawing patterns on the rock beneath the two of you. “I can already feel my control slipping sometimes this go around, especially when I’m around you. It’s nothing I can’t handle though.”
“What do you mean?” You frowned, brow furrowing. “I cause your control to slip? Why?”
Jake stared at you, eyes widening once again when he realized what he had said. He shook his head.
“Nevermind. Forget I said anything.”
“No,” you snapped, glaring up at him. “You promised me that you would be honest and tell me what I wanted to know.”
He looked a little taken aback, but let out another sigh as he relented.
“Sea people have what they call ‘true mates,’” he began, “and they’re different from regular mates. True mates are an ideal pair, one the powers that be have ordained as a perfect match. Everyone can take a mate, sure, but very few ever find their true mate. They’re so rare, in fact, that some people think it’s just a myth.”
“Do you?” You asked. “Think it’s a myth, I mean.”
He stared at you for a beat.
“I used to,” he admitted. “I used to think that true mates were just some sappy fairytale that people clung to to make themselves feel better. I used to laugh at the idea, actually. It wasn’t until-”
He stopped, clamping his mouth closed as his cheeks tinged red once again. You furrowed your brow at him.
“Until what?” You pressed. He swallowed thickly, turning to look out at the water.
“Until I met you,” he said quietly, voice barely above a whisper. You let out a small gasp, but waited for him to continue.
“The first night I saw you in that bar, Skipper, I knew. I knew with everything in me that you were the one that I had been looking and waiting for my entire life. You were the one in my dreams growing up. You were the one I could feel in my chest, pulling me towards you. You were the one that made me realize that I could be happy, that I didn’t have to settle for a life that other people had decided for me.”
You stared at him, registering the look of vulnerability on his face, and you sucked in a deep breath.
“I dreamed about you too,” you admitted, causing him to look back at you. “Or, at least I think I did. And I always felt like something was incomplete, like a piece of me was always missing. But when I sit here with you, things just feel…right.”
“Right?” He pressed, leaning in so that your noses were practically brushing each other.
“Yeah,” you murmured, your heartbeat picking up at the close proximity. “Like things aren’t so hard when you’re around. Like I don’t even have to try. Things just feel easy around you, and if I’m being honest, that kind of scares me.”
He hummed, resting his forehead against yours, warm breath running over your face as he breathed out.
“It scares me too,” he said, closing his eyes, his hand reaching out to curl around yours where it rested atop the rock. “My whole life I thought I knew what would happen. I would marry Mandy, I would go work with my father at his business, we’d pop out a couple of kids, and then the rest of life would happen. I’d die in my bed of old age, surrounded by the people that I love having lived a life that anyone would be proud of.”
“And now?” You asked, squeezing his hand. He took a shuddering breath before opening his eyes. You were almost taken aback by how beautiful they were. Swirling shades of sea glass green mixed with darker emerald, a look of pure longing on his face as he stared at you.
“Now, I know that’s not what I want,” he murmured. “I don’t want to be with Mandy. I don’t want to have the pristine, picture perfect family you find in commercials or magazines. I just want you, Skipper. I want you in any way that you’ll have me.”
His eyes were glowing now, the mossy green standing out against the growing darkness of the storm clouds that were rolling in from the sea.
“Your eyes,” you breathed, raising your unoccupied hand to run your fingers across his cheek. “They’re glowing. I knew I wasn’t imagining it.”
Jake nuzzled into the palm of your hand, humming low in his throat as he breathed you in. His eyes fluttered closed as he pressed a chaste kiss in the center of your palm, and your breath hitched. You shifted, leaning in close enough that your lips hovered just over his. His eyes once again connected with yours, boring into you as if he could see every single part that you kept hidden. Your gaze dropped down to his lips for a brief second before darting back up. Eyes hooded, you leaned in, lips barely grazing his before jumping back as the rain started.
The drops came in a downpour, instantly soaking the two of you as you let out a startled laugh.
“Come on!” Jake grinned, gripping your hand and helping you off the rocks before the two of you sprinted towards his house. You trotted up the steps after him, letting out another peel of breathless laughter as the two of you caught your breath. You looked out at the beach as it continued to pour, a peel of thunder cracking through the roar of the rain. You turned back to look at Jake with a smile, shaking your head.
“The rain didn’t even build up to-”
Jake’s lips were soft on yours, pressing firmly as he cupped your cheek in his hand. You froze, taken by surprise. He pulled back after a second, eyes uncertain as they watched you.
“I’m sorry,” he said after a moment, eyes growing wide with panic. “I shouldn’t have done that. I just thought after the rocks and you were standing there looking so pretty, I just-”
You cut him off with a kiss of your own, and he stiffened for a second before returning it. His hands landed on your waist, backing you up against the pillar by the stairs as his lips moved against yours in a heated bid to feel every part of you. Your own hands moved to tangle in his hair, pulling on the still wet strands gently and earning a groan from him. His tongue traced your lower lip, and you instantly opened up to him, relishing in the feeling of the muscle against your own.
Jake’s grip tightened on your waist before moving his right hand up to grope at your breast, squeezing it with a low groan. You moaned into his mouth, one hand releasing his hair to slide down and grip at his shoulder as you pressed against him. He continued to lick languidly into your mouth, savoring the taste of you and every little sound you made. He pulled away to allow you to breathe, nipping at your bottom lip gently. As you sucked in a lungful of air, he busied himself with pressing hot, open-mouthed kisses along your jaw and down your neck. You tilted your head to the side to allow him better access, and you felt him smirk against you as his left hand grabbed your thigh to wrap your leg around him. You could feel the hard bulge press against you, and a tingle ran up your spine.
“Jake,” you breathed out, head thrown back as he nipped at your skin, running his tongue over the same spot to soothe the sting. His lips worked lower and lower as you began to roll your hips against his. You let out a strangled cry as his lips connected with the intention mark on your neck, pleasure rippling through your veins as you gripped onto him and ground down harder onto him. Jake nipped at the mark, causing you to let out another cry as your nails dug into the meat of his shoulders through his shirt. You could feel your arousal dripping from you as your mind grew heavy with lust.
Suddenly, Jake pushed away from you, practically throwing himself across the porch. You whined at the loss, brow furrowed in confusion as you took in the state of him. He was panting hard, almost crouched as he gripped the porch railing to steady himself. His eyes were still glowing, brighter than they were previously, but fading in and out as he calmed down.
“Jake,” you murmured, “are you okay?”
“Not like this,” he said, more to himself than to you. “I don’t want it to be like this.”
“What are you talking about? Jake, you’re worrying me.”
He looked at you then, taking in your disheveled state as he righted himself. A mixture of regret and longing adorned his face as he spoke.
“I gave that mark to you during a moment of frenzy,” he admitted, gesturing to the bite in question. “I was so scared that you weren’t going to make it, and the frenzy magic was already in overdrive. I gave it to you without thinking, and I’m sorry.”
“Jake,” you said slowly, taking small steps towards him as if you might scare him off otherwise. “I’m not mad about that at all, but why are you suddenly acting this way?”
“Because,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair, “because I already told you. I want you, Skipper, and I want you to want me back. I want to know that you want me for me and not because of some damn magic that tells us we’re supposed to be together.”
You stared at him for a moment, processing what he was telling you. It was true that you felt a pull towards him that could only be explained by the magic, but it felt so much more than that. Jake was sweet and kind, and he cared for you. He made sure that you were taken care of when you were vulnerable, and he wanted to hear your opinions on things. You did want Jake beyond the magic, but you were more than willing to take the time to prove that to him.
“Okay,” you agreed, nodding slowly. “So what do you suggest?”
“Can we,” he swallowed thickly, eyes hopeful as they searched you. “Can we take it a little slow? Maybe spend some time alone together?”
“You mean like on dates?” You smiled, standing in front of him now and batting your lashes at him. A grin tugged on the corner of his lips as he looked down at you, giving you a nod.
“Yeah. I want to take you out on a date.”
“Just the one?” You teased, and he rolled his eyes, a full-blown grin on his face now.
“Well, I was hoping you’d give me more than just that,” he teased back, leaning into you again. You tapped a finger on your chin thoughtfully.
“I dunno,” you hummed, fighting back the smile that threatened to overtake you. “I guess we’ll just have to see how the first one goes, won’t we?”
“I have full confidence in myself that I’ll be able to convince you of that second date.”
“Come on, Crooner,” you laughed, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the front door. “Let’s get changed before we catch a cold or something.”
Tumblr media
About a half hour later, you were dressed in a pair of oversized sweats and an old t-shirt - both belonging to Jake. The two of you were huddled up on the couch underneath a blanket, some random movie thrown on to fill the silence. Your legs were curled under you as you rested against Jake’s side, his arms wrapped around you as you played with his fingers.
“You bit him?” You huffed out a laugh as Jake chuckled. “Why?”
“Because Bradley gets a little big for his britches sometimes,” Jake defended. “He knew I had an interest in you and what we were, and he still pressed his luck. Even with the mark on your neck. ”
“Boys,” you exclaimed with a roll of your eyes. A comfortable silence fell between the two of you as the movie continued to drone on in the background.
“Jake,” you hummed thoughtfully, “do you regret giving me this mark?”
He stiffened against you, and you chanced a glance up at him. His lips were pressed into a firm line, brow furrowed as he looked at you.
“Absolutely not,” he bit out. “Why would you think that?”
“It’s just,” you hesitated, still fidgeting with his fingers as you looked down, “it’s just been one thing after the other since you gave it to me. Am I really worth the trouble?”
“Skipper,” he said firmly, cupping your jaw and making you look at him. “I will never regret you, okay? Even if you decide that this isn’t something you want, I will live the rest of my life knowing that I had the privilege of having you even for a moment.”
His eyes were sincere as they held your gaze, and you suddenly felt silly for doubting him. You nodded, willing the tears that prickled behind your eyes to go away. You sniffed before settling back down against him, basking in the feeling of him stroking a hand through your hair.
“Jake! We can’t find Skipper anywh-”
You jumped as the front door burst open to reveal your friends, Bob at the front of the pack. All of you stared at one another before you raised an eyebrow at them.
“Are you coming in or not?” You snapped, fixing them all with a glare. Jake turned the TV off as the squad filed in, taking seats wherever there was one available. Once everyone was settled, you continued.
“Finally decide on how you’re going to lie to me some more? Whatever you came up with, I sure hope it’s better than the ones you were telling me before.”
The group had the decency to look ashamed. Bob gave you an apologetic look as he faced you from where he sat in one of the recliners.
“We never wanted to lie to you, Y/n,” he explained. “But would you have believed the truth?”
“I might have,” you countered. “You could have at least tried.”
“Would you trust an outsider that you barely knew with a secret like this?” Javy chimed in. He made a good point, and your silence answered for you.
“I wanted to tell you, Skipper,” Bob continued, “but it wasn’t my secret to tell. And with all the stuff between you and Jake, it just seemed like it would be so much to throw at you.”
“I get that,” you conceded, nodding slowly. “But Jake’s already told me most of everything, so no more lying to me, okay? I need to know and be kept in the loop moving forward okay?”
Everyone looked at each other before nodding at you. You gave them a small smile before letting out a relieved breath.
“Good,” you chirped. “Now that that’s settled, let’s go get something to eat. I’m starved.”

Hangman and Haze: the reunite
part one of two..
Tumblr media
Summary: In the quiet of the night, Y/N finds herself confiding in Bradley about the reasons behind her sudden departure from Jake before her deployment to Poland. As they share moments of vulnerability and reflection, Y/N grapples with the choices she's made and the uncertainty of her future, while Bradley offers unwavering support and understanding. Amidst the lingering echoes of their past, they find solace in the simple act of being present for each other, forging a bond that transcends time and distance.
Warnings: This chapter contains themes of emotional turmoil, past regrets, and unresolved feelings. Reader discretion is advised for those sensitive to discussions of relationship complications and separation anxiety.
The streets of San Diego were quiet under the moonlit sky as Y/N's car rolled into the familiar neighborhood. It had been fourteen long months since she last set foot in this city, leaving behind memories both bitter and sweet. But tonight, as she parked in front of Bradley's porch, she felt a mixture of nerves and relief flood her senses.
With a gentle sigh, Y/N unbuckled her seatbelt and turned to the backseat where little Jack lay asleep in his car seat. The soft rise and fall of his chest brought a small smile to her lips, a reminder of why she had returned. Jack, her precious six-month-old son, the living embodiment of her love for Jake.
Stepping out into the cool night air, Y/N carefully lifted Jack from his seat, cradling him close to her chest. She took a moment to gather her thoughts, her heart racing with anticipation and uncertainty. Would Bradley be awake at this hour? Would he welcome her back with open arms or turn her away?
Summoning her courage, Y/N made her way up the porch steps, each one creaking softly beneath her weight. She paused at the door, her hand trembling slightly as she reached out to knock. The sound echoed in the silence, resonating with the weight of her decision.
Seconds stretched into eternity before the door swung open, revealing Bradley's tired yet concerned expression. His eyes widened in surprise as they fell upon Y/N and the sleeping bundle in her arms.
"Y/N," he breathed, his voice barely above a whisper. "Is that...?"
Y/N nodded, her throat tightening with emotion. "It's me, Bradley. And... and this is Jack."
For a moment, neither of them spoke, the air heavy with unspoken questions and unfinished conversations. But then, Bradley's expression softened, his gaze flickering with understanding and compassion.
"Come in," he said quietly, stepping aside to make way for Y/N and Jack. "You're home now."
With a grateful smile, Y/N crossed the threshold, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. Home. The word echoed in her mind, a promise of belonging and forgiveness.
As she settled into the familiar surroundings of Bradley's living room, Y/N couldn't help but wonder what the future held. But one thing was certain: she was back where she belonged, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, with Jack by her side and Bradley's unwavering support.
And somewhere in the depths of her heart, she hoped that Jake would find his way back to them too, completing the family they had always dreamed of.
Bradley led Y/N into the kitchen, leaving Jack to slumber peacefully in the dimly lit living room. The soft hum of the refrigerator filled the air, creating a cocoon of intimacy around them as they sat at the worn wooden table.
Pouring two mugs of steaming coffee, Bradley offered one to Y/N, his eyes filled with concern. "Tell me, Y/N," he began gently, "what happened in Poland? Why did you leave Jake here in San Diego before you went?"
Y/N took a sip of her coffee, the warmth spreading through her body like a lifeline. She knew she couldn't evade Bradley's questions any longer, not when he had opened his home to her and Jack with such kindness.
"It's... complicated," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "Jake and I, we were together here in San Diego. Everything seemed perfect, like a dream come true."
"But then..." Bradley prompted, sensing her hesitation.
Y/N's hands trembled as she traced the rim of her mug, the memories of that fateful day threatening to overwhelm her. "I was offered a new assignment in Poland. It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up, but it meant leaving Jake behind."
Bradley listened in silence, his gaze unwavering as he waited for Y/N to continue.
"I thought we could make it work long-distance," Y/N admitted, her voice choked with emotion. "But as the days turned into weeks, the distance between us grew, and so did the doubts in my mind."
"And so you left," Bradley concluded softly, a note of understanding in his tone.
Y/N nodded, tears glistening in her eyes. "I thought it was for the best, that it would give us both the space we needed to figure things out. But looking back, I realize I was just running away from my feelings, from the fear of facing the truth."
Bradley reached across the table, squeezing Y/N's hand in a gesture of solidarity. "You don't have to face this alone, Y/N. Whatever happens, I'll be here for you, every step of the way."
With Bradley's unwavering support anchoring her, Y/N felt a flicker of hope ignite within her heart. Maybe, just maybe, she could find the courage to confront her past and embrace the uncertain future that lay ahead. And as the night wore on, she found solace in the simple act of sharing her story, knowing that she wasn't alone in her struggles.
The quiet of the kitchen enveloped them like a comforting embrace, punctuated only by the occasional soft clink of their coffee mugs. Y/N found solace in Bradley's presence, grateful for his understanding and support in this moment of vulnerability.
As they sat in silence, Bradley's question hung in the air like a delicate thread. "Have you at least kept in touch with Jake?"
Y/N nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on the swirling patterns in her coffee. "I send him pictures of Jack every week," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's the least I can do, to let him be a part of our son's life."
Bradley reached out, placing a comforting hand on Y/N's shoulder. "That's... that's really good of you, Y/N. I'm sure Jake appreciates it more than you know."
A faint smile tugged at Y/N's lips, a glimmer of hope flickering within her heart. Maybe, despite everything that had happened between them, there was still a chance for them to find their way back to each other, if only for the sake of their son.
"And what about Jake?" Y/N asked, her curiosity piqued. "Is he still at Top Gun?"
Bradley nodded, his expression somber. "Yes, he is. He's been throwing himself into his work, trying to keep busy, I suppose."
Y/N's heart ached at the thought of Jake, alone at Top Gun, his thoughts consumed by memories of their time together. She couldn't shake the feeling that their story was far from over, that there were still words left unsaid between them, waiting to be spoken.
But for now, as she sat in the warmth of Bradley's kitchen, surrounded by the gentle hum of the night, Y/N found comfort in the simple act of being present, of sharing this moment with someone who understood her in ways she couldn't begin to explain. And as the night wore on, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was still hope for them yet.
The weight of Bradley's words lingered in the air, a silent acknowledgment of the complexities of their intertwined pasts. Y/N couldn't help but wonder what Jake was thinking, what he felt when he looked at the pictures of Jack, their son, growing up from afar. Did he long to be a part of their lives as much as she wished he would?
"I wish things were different," Y/N murmured, her voice heavy with regret.
Bradley's gaze softened, his hand squeezing her shoulder in a gesture of reassurance. "I know, Y/N. But sometimes, life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths. All we can do is make the best of the hand we've been dealt."
Y/N nodded, a sense of resignation settling over her. She knew that she couldn't change the past, couldn't undo the choices she had made. But she could choose how to move forward, how to navigate the uncertain road ahead.
"And what about you, Bradley?" she asked, her curiosity breaking through the somber silence. "How have you been?"
A wistful smile graced Bradley's lips, a flicker of warmth in the depths of his eyes. "I've been holding up," he replied, his voice tinged with quiet determination. "Taking things one day at a time, you know?"
Y/N nodded in understanding, a sense of gratitude swelling within her. Despite the distance that had grown between them over the years, Bradley had always been a constant presence in her life, a beacon of light in the darkest of times.
"Thank you, Bradley," she said softly, her words laced with sincerity. "For everything."
Bradley's smile widened, a glimmer of hope dancing in his eyes. "Anytime, Y/N. You know I'll always be here for you, no matter what."
And as they sat in the stillness of the night, surrounded by the comforting embrace of Bradley's kitchen, Y/N felt a sense of peace wash over her. Whatever the future held, she knew that she wasn't alone, that she had someone by her side who would always have her back. And with that knowledge, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was still a chance for them to find their way back to each other, to rewrite the story of their lives in a way that felt true and whole.

hi baby! could i request "[ NUZZLE ] sender presses their face into receiver’s neck" with hangman please! ily<3
LOLA!!! thank u for requesting ily ily <33
jake "hangman" seresin x reader, 1.3k
Jake was finally coming home after a full seven months away on deployment, and you’d never been so excited (and anxious) to see anyone in your whole life.
Seven months of sporadic video calls with shitty audio and even shittier video, seven months of sending emails whenever he could and letters even less often. Seven months of waiting for the love of your life to come back to you, safe and sound.
Sure, some days were worse than others. Some days you could barely carry on normally with things because you were so worried. Some nights you had nightmares about getting that one letter, that one knock on your door that would send your whole life crumbling to the ground. Some days all you could do was sit on Jake’s side of the bed, clutching one of his shirts to your nose just so you could remember what he smelled like.
But today was not that day. Today, Jake was coming home.
You smoothed your dress out nervously as you waited with the rest of the people with family members or partners returning home today, rocking back and forth on your toes in barely contained excitement as you watched the ship dock in port.
Your eyes combed through the crowd of naval officers and civilians alike, searching for that head of perfectly coiffed hair sticking out above the others.
The chatter of the crowd around you dulled to a muffled blur of noise the second you laid eyes on him. He hadn’t seen you yet, his own gaze still flitting around at the folks reuniting with their loved ones all surrounding him. His brow was furrowed in the utmost concentration, and you almost wanted to play it out a little longer, have him wait a little longer just to make your reunion that much sweeter.
But your need to bury yourself in his arms, to feel his warm skin beneath your fingertips, to finally, finally kiss him until neither of you could breathe anymore—that need was greater than anything else at the moment.
Breaking out into a run, you ducked and weaved through person after person as you made your way towards Jake. You nearly bowled him over with the force of your hug when you finally got to him, barely giving him enough time to drop his bag as you threw yourself into his arms with a cry.
“Holy shit,” Jake inhaled, steadying himself enough to withstand the force of your hug. He sounded amazed, breathless like he couldn’t believe you were here in front of him at this very moment. “Holy shit!”
Your nose pressed into his neck, the smell of sunscreen, sweat, and a little bit of engine smoke accompanying the familiar smell of his cologne. This wasn’t a smell you could get from one of his old shirts. It was raw, unfiltered, so very Jake that you could damn near sob right now. Seven months of missing your man really took a toll on your emotional state.
“Hi,” You mumbled against his skin, squeezing him so tight you wouldn’t be surprised if you were able to meld into him. He murmured back a soft greeting of his own, large hands splaying across your back as he lifted you off your feet and spun you in a circle. You tightened your arms around his neck with a squeal.
He hooked his shades onto the breast pocket of his uniform as soon as he set you back down on the ground, pretty green eyes flitting around your face, taking in every single detail. “My god, did you get even more perfect while I was away?”
You felt your cheeks grow hot under his focus. “Oh my god, stop it.”
“What? I’m so serious right now, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop looking at you. Look,” he grinned, not even attempting to cast his gaze elsewhere. “See, I can’t even take my eyes off you. Couldn’t even if I tried. Not that I’d want to, with you lookin’ like somethin’ straight out of my dreams.”
“You’re horrible.”
“I’ve just gotten home after months and months away and I’m horrible?” Jake teased, giving your hip a light pinch. Any response you were about to give died in your throat as soon as you registered the weight of his words and you just stared at him, blinking furiously to stop the influx of tears that you knew were coming. It didn’t work.
Jake saw the tremble of your lip and brought you back against his chest within a second, cradling the back of your head in his palm. His other hand smoothed over your back in small circles, lips pressed to your forehead gently. “Oh hey, hey, you’re okay. Everything’s fine, no need for tears.”
“Sorry, I’m—god, I’m sorry, Jake,” You breathed, inhaling a shaky breath against the scratchy khaki of his uniform. You retreated a little bit, managing to gather yourself enough to look up at him.
He gave his head a miniscule shake, mouth curving into a reassuring smile. “No need for sorries. Glad to see you missed me while I was gone.”
“Of course I missed you, asshole.”
“Asshole? Me? Shit, maybe you didn’t miss me!”
“Don’t even joke about that.” You huffed, feigning a glare at him that faltered almost immediately. “You’re really here?”
“I’m really here, darlin’.” He echoed, sliding his hands over yours and bringing them up to his face so he could press a kiss to both of your palms. “Right here, right now, and I’m not plannin’ on leaving again anytime soon.”
Happy tears welled in your eyes, your heart thrumming hard in your chest at the mere thought of Jake staying stateside for the foreseeable future. You let out a watery chuckle, smoothing your fingers over the smile lines near his eyes before breaking into a smile yourself.
“There’s my girl.” Jake hummed, tapping you on the nose lightly. He held you at arms’ length, finally taking the time to fully take in the sight of you. His eyes traveled down the length of your dress, lips curving into a cheeky smirk. “New dress just for me? I’m honored.”
“You like it?”
“Oh, I love it,” He hummed, ducking in towards your ear for his next words. “Though I think I’ll love it even more on the floor of our bedroom.”
“Well, what’re you waiting for?”
Jake’s eyebrows flew sky high at your insinuation, and he quickly stooped down to snatch up his duffel, throwing it over his shoulder and grabbing your hand in one fell swoop. He pulled you through the crowd until the parking lot, where he let you take over until your car came into view.
You moved to toss him the keys because you knew he’d probably missed driving through the streets of Fightertown whilst he was away, but before they could leave your hand, he nudged you back against the side of the car. He pushed up close until he was flush against you, and you barely caught a glimpse of his pearly white smile before his mouth was on yours, moving with such a hunger that seemed a bit much for a public setting. Not that you were complaining though, this was the first time you got to kiss him in ages.
You only remembered you were in a crowded parking lot when Jake’s hand at your waist crept around to give your butt a squeeze, bracing your hands against his chest to push him back a few inches. “What was that for?” You panted, kiss swollen lips parted as you attempted to catch your breath.
“Had to give my girl a proper hello.” He shrugged, pressing a much shorter kiss to your lips before plucking the keys out of your hand and pulling open the passenger door for you like he hadn’t just kissed the living daylights out of you. “You comin’ or what?” Judging by the cheeky smirk gracing his face, he knew what he was doing.
“Like I said earlier—asshole.”
“Happy to be home too, darlin’!”

Rain pitter patters outside. It’s two in the morning, you should be asleep but it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. How did Atlas do it? Bear so much weight, but never broke. Your knees are starting to buckle from the pressure. You asked for this, of course you did. There isn’t anything you’d trade it for. Turning your head, a satisfied smile rests on your lips. I’ll make it baby, he said. I’ll make it all night. Jake lays next to you, his breaths deep and even. You’d picked him up from the airport not too long ago. You’re sure he doesn’t even know what day it is. He’s just happy to be home. You’re happy to have him home.
Slowly, as not to wake him, you shift your covers and climb out of bed. A nice fire and a cup of tea sounded perfect to go with the rain. It’s not like you were getting any sleep anyway. Rubbing at your eyes, you make your way to the living room not bothering to flick on any lights. You’d been in this house long enough you could map it blind folded. Turning on the kettle, you made your way to the back sliding glass door to grab some wood. You’re more than thankful that Jake had cut more fire wood than needed last winter. He was always saving your back.
With the crackle of the fire you made it to the kitchen just in time, hearing the whistle of the kettle. It’s nearing three a.m. but you’re still wide awake. You’re stirring honey into your cup when you hear the creak of the floorboards. That didn’t last long, but that’s the way it goes. How either of you survive when he’s deployed is a mystery. He can’t sleep without you when he’s home.
Warm hands set themselves on your shoulders causing goosebumps to break out across your skin. Soft lips press against the back of your exposed neck, your eyes shut at the feeling. No, you hadn’t wanted to wake him, he needed his sleep, but you were glad he was here with you.
“What are you doin’ honey?” His voice is run through gravel, coated with sleep.
“Think I’m going to draw some.”
Jake hums, turning you in his grip so you’re facing him. His hands trail up from your shoulders to cradle your face. His thumb ghosts over your bottom lip, once, twice before you nip at it making him smile.
“I’ll get your supplies. Go get comfy.”
**
You should be drawing the view right now, but you’re not.
It’s not for lack of inspiration. There’s a reason you weren’t sleeping. You wanted to catch the storm. In any other circumstance you’d be completely captivated by the dark beauty of it all—the slow flowing raindrops rolling down the window. The dark clouds that keep the moon from shining in its dim light, all the stars hidden away. The quick flash that freezes the dried leaves and barren trees swaying in the winter air, giving you the perfect picture. Winter storms were your favorite and they were hard to come by. You normally wouldn’t pass this up. But somehow, your inspiration is solely coming from the man lying on the couch across from you. He’s sprawled out, relaxed, and completely at ease. His arms are folded behind his head, eyes closed as he breathes in deeply.
You told him to go back to bed, but he wasn’t sleeping without you. So this is the compromise. There’s a playlist on your phone playing through the speakers. One you always listen to when Jake’s away. Maybe that’s what keeps pulling your attention to him. The glow of the fire paints him in the warmest hues of yellows, oranges, and reds, making his lightly tanned skin glow. You smile, teeth biting into your cheek when green eyes flick over every few minutes to check that you’re still here with him, and it’s mesmerizing, his gaze. It’s almost the same color you thought his aura to be. Calm, steady, grounding, secure.
You keep your eyes trained on the sketchbook in your lap, attempting not to be conspicuous when you look up to study him every now and then. The idea makes you snort. As if your staring has ever bothered him. You stared so hard when you first met him that you hadn’t heard a thing he said to you for about three minutes. It was the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to you, but hey, he thought you were the cutest thing.
It all worked out.
When he looks up at you now and catches you lost in thought as you admire him, his lips tilt up into a teasing grin. You wink at him before looking back down at the book. You’ve drawn him a hundred times before. This one is probably your favorite. Him at home, content  with you. Holding the piece back a bit, you study your favorite parts. The gentle way his lashes rest against his cheeks. The slope of his nose. He looks peaceful. Godlike. Not that you’d ever tell him that, his ego did not need to hear it.
“What are you drawing over there, honey?”
You don’t have to look up from the sketchbook to know that his smirk has turned more haughty than before, and when he leans forward a little, you lean back at the same time to keep your sketchbook out of his reach.
He knows you draw him. He’s seen a few of them. He’s seen almost all of your artwork. In fact, he has one of your drawings tattooed on him. He got it while on your honeymoon. You thought he was crazy but he thinks he was being romantic. Whatever. But this one, it feels different. More personal. It’s not him being vulnerable on the page, but you as well.
“Just the rainstorm,” you lie, with a little shrug, looking back out the window for added effect, scrunching your eyes slightly as if to examine it in depth.
“The rainstorm,” he repeats. He doesn’t believe you. Not like he has to. He knows without a doubt you’re lying. “That why you keep looking at me?”
“Maybe I just missed you, ever think of that?” You counter, but it comes out in a harsh whisper, like you're trying not to cry. Closing the sketchbook quickly, you nearly jam your finger in between the pages. His gaze burns over you, taking you in from your averted gaze, hands clenching your sketchbook, your rigged posture, back pressed so hard against the couch, as if purposely trying to keep a distance from him.
“Baby, I’m right here.”
You huff. As if you don’t already know this. Like you haven’t had your eyes on him since you crashed into him at the airport, arms around his neck and legs around his waist. It’s why you can’t sleep—because he’s home. He’s here and all you want is him close. You want him with you. You want him living inside you where he can’t ever escape; where the thought of losing him is only a nightmare. Your eyes have gone misty, something you can’t hide when you glance up at him when you feel a finger lazily drag up your leg. You raise your brows trying to feign innocence as you place the sketchbook on the other side of you. He could easily reach it if he wanted to, you’d have no chance at keeping it from him, but it seems that he can sense the anxiety radiating off of you. Jake’s smirk falls into something softer, gentler. Something you’ve only seen a handful of times—something that he saves just for you.
“Dance with me.”
You hesitate for a small second. “What?”
His eyes brighten as he pulls himself up into a sitting position. He grabs your phone that’s sitting on the coffee table and raises the volume. Suddenly, it’s three years ago, the beginning of June and you’re standing in the middle of an empty Texas pasture dressed in white. The song tugs on your heartstrings more than it ever has before. Jake’s eyes slightly crinkle with his smile.
“Dance with me.” he says softly as he extends his hand out for you to take.
For, my darling, I love you And I always will Love me tender, love me long Take me to your heart For it’s there that I belong And we’ll never part
Without much effort you're in his arms, swaying to the song that played during your first dance as a married couple. You can’t seem to stop the tears that fall from your eyes. You aren’t sad, but this feels like a lot. He’s got you wrapped up in him. One arm wrapped around your waist holding you to him, while the other is cradling your head, fingers weaved through your hair. Your head rests on his shoulder, hands tight around his waist, both of you lost in each other, in the magic of the firelight, the silence of the early morning.
“Do you regret marrying me?” Jake whispers in your ear.
“No.”
“You’d choose this life again?”
“I’d choose you every time no matter what it meant. I can deal with this, Jake, long as I get you back every time. Every time.”
His eyes rest heavy on you, and your pulse starts to race when the soft light in his eyes slightly darkens into something else. His gaze lingers on your lips long enough for you to tilt your chin up, bringing your mouth closer to his, and when his lips realign to that familiar smirk you know, like always, he’s more aware of the effect he has on you than he should be. Maybe you should be embarrassed by that, but it makes things easy. You never have to ask, he just knows. Like how you’re standing here with the electric hum of excited energy flooding your veins already, desperately waiting to feel his mouth on yours. He lowers his head slowly, eyeing you with a playful gleam telling you that he’s teasing you — that he knows his slow pace is driving you crazy. But it doesn’t last long, the moment you run your tongue along your bottom lip, his playful attitude breaks, and his lips collide with yours. You pull him closer as his hand slips down to grab at your thigh. Without much thought you jump, wrapping your legs around him as he carries you back to your bedroom.
With Jake, kisses are more than just feeling his lips against yours. It’s his calloused fingers slowly brushing the inside of your thighs, in a slow teasing motion, that drives you crazy until you're grinding against him. Desperate for him to touch you, really touch you. It’s the taste of his spearmint tongue brushing against your own, sending white-hot jolts of pleasure straight down to your core. It’s the smell of him—intoxicating, mouthwatering, enough to make you weak at the knees. But more than anything, it’s the sound of him—of the deep exhales when your fingers dip into the band of his pajama pants to tease him, the throaty groan when you grind your hips down into his, the position of you resting over him on your bed one of power, one he gives only you. It’s the surprised laugh that echoes from him whenever you nibble on his bottom lip or pull away to catch your breath.
Your seconds away from doing that when he breaks away from the kiss, grinning up at you like he knows you weren’t breathing. He probably does. The man knew you like the back of his hand from the moment you met. Jake only shakes his head, a soft laugh pouring out of him, his thumb running along your cheekbone. He’s looking up at you like you hung the stars and the moon. But that can’t be right, can it? Not when he’s magic, a myth. Something you can’t really phantom. A god in your bed, carved marble under your fingertips. He is Apollo and you, Icarus, willing to burn for a moment of his time. Willing to go to war with the sun, a battle you know you will never win.
“I love you,” you whisper against his lips.
He smiles against yours. “And I love you.”

You rifle through the extra diaper bag, not finding the candles in the back seat. Your form is tucked in the side of the pickup as you lean over to reach on the opposite side of the cab. The breeze washes over the back of your thighs, and you silently curse Jake for stealing your panties earlier.
A small giggle falls from your lips as you think about the little romp the two of you had only moments ago, you would never be able to look at those pool tables the same way. A harsh sigh falls from your lips as you push yourself up, and yet remain halfway in the truck hoping that they only slid under Jake’s seat.
“You always did look better from behind.”
The voice stills whatever searching you were doing, encasing you in the memory of the last time those words were uttered to you. The buckle of your knees has you falling farther into the truck, grasping onto the only sense of support for your frozen body. Your eyes blink rapidly as the air seems to be ripped from your chest, and you quietly wonder when the ringing in your ears started.
The tightness in your throat only increases, as you swallow, and no words form. Yet tears can form. The tears that stream down your face only increase as your shaky hand rises to brush against your swollen eye. The touch makes you hiss, as a harsh laugh rings through the room and your eyes focus back on Adam.
The grit of your teeth, as you force back the small cries, cause your jaw to ache and you wonder if the cracking of your teeth could replace your current pain. Your sight remains blurry through the tears, though you can still see his menacing form as he stands above you.
You glance at the bedroom door and find it shut. You don’t remember Adam locking the door, but the flip of the nob proves that it is. A breath releases from you in relief, with the door, locked there was no way for Maty to get into the room.
Your sweet 12-month-old had just started trying to walk, and you knew that he would be trying to get to you. He was a momma’s boy, always had been, but he was safer in the hallway. Everything was child locked and he couldn’t hurt himself. He was safer out there than he was in the room, he shouldn’t witness what was about to happen.
The quick movement of Adam crouching down to you, has you spiraling back, pushing as far away from him as you can until your back meets the bedroom wall. Your eyes track around the room, looking for anything to grasp onto, though you find nothing and the only form of defense you can take is when you wrap your arms around your knees. Clutching onto yourself, you dip your head down to cower away from the next hit.
“You shouldn’t have fought it, Angel.” His hand rises to clasp onto your cheek and pulls your face up, so you can’t hide. The soft stroke of his thumb against your cheek does nothing to calm you. “If you would have listened, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”
Your face jolts away from Adam, though the action only ends with him grasping the back of your hair and yanking you. Your figure tumbles forward as he drags you back towards the bed, and you don’t notice the small cuts that litter your fingers as you claw at the old hardwood floors.
Your lips shake as muffled cries fall from your lips. With each push you make away from him, the harder he pulls on your hair, and you wonder if it’s going to be enough to rip it from your scalp.
You miss the action, as the world around you moves in slow motion, though the harsh swing of your head to the side and the sting in your lip, confirm the hit. You can only taste metal, the harsh flavor coats your tongue and you silently pray to whichever gods may be listening.
The moments in time flash before your eyes and it feels like you’ve been pulled from your own body. Like every action happening to you, isn’t actually you.
It’s not you that’s being thrown against the white comforter. Not you that can’t breathe, from your face being pushed so far into a pillow that you consider suffocation. It’s not your body that’s being used and manipulated, clothes ripped in ways you never considered a possibility, torn from your body, and yet all you can do is cry into the pillow. It’s not your head that has a harsh hand against it, pushing it down farther.
It’s not you… It’s not you.. Breathe… It’s not you… Breathe…
IT CAN BE YOU
Then why is his voice ringing through your ears, “You always did look better from behind.”
It’s numb, everything is numb. The push and pull of your body against the sheets should hurt, the red marks that litter your body will prove it in the morning. Though for now, it’s numb.
The crack of gravel behind you has your back straightening and flipping around on instinct alone. Though you had recognized the voice, seeing Adam in front of you sends a chill down your spine and your idle hand remains wrapped around behind you, grasping onto Josephine’s car seat.
You do your best to hide the small tremble in your body as your eyes make contact with his dark brown ones, though the haunted smirk on his face lets you know that he’s noticed. You’re not sure how your mouth had gotten so dry, though the pain with swallowing is evident as your ears pop.
You want to stare him down, to show him that you weren’t the same girl that he had so easily pushed around. Though with him now in front of you, you’re surprised that you haven’t collapsed. The lock in your knees is your only support, other than the truck, though your likeliness of fainting from having your knees locked has you bending them.
“What are you doing here?”
You’re surprised that your voice doesn’t tremble nearly as much as you thought it would. A harsh laugh releases from him and you flinch slightly when it looks like he’s going to step toward you. The clenched fist at your side is starting to ache, and you’re sure that you will have crescent-shaped cuts in your palm from your nails.
“I’m here to see my son.”
His voice holds a certain questioning, yet authoritative tone in it and has you immediately looking past him to the beach. Jake hadn’t been able to park right up against the sand, and a parking lot that once seemed small now looks daunting and endless.
“He isn’t yours; you signed your rights away.”
Your eyes remain on the horizon. The sunset no longer has a calming effect on your body, as darkness settles over the California landscape. Creating a blanket of disguise for the things that go bump in the night.
“He’s still mi–”
“No, he’s not!”
You had never been able to lash out at Adam before and the stunned look on his face is proof enough of how much you’ve changed.
“He has a father, and it’s not you.”
The statement is ballsy, you knew how easily upset Adam could get, but he had no right to claim Mathew as his. Jake was his father and you’d be damned before anyone tried to take or ignore the title.
You don’t miss the anger that flashes in Adam’s eyes as he looks at your left hand hanging by your side and takes in the sight of your engagement ring and wedding band.
It’s quick, the flash of a tattoo crossing your line of sight as your breath is ripped from your chest, in a fraction of a second.  You should have noticed the signs, the way he always pulls back his hand before he swings.  You would have before, though you’ve healed in the past six years and your response time has slowed.
The harsh slap rings through your ears and sends you tumbling to the side. Your unsteady hands barely catch yourself in time and as your vision clears, you stare at the metal door frame littered is specks of blood. A shaky breath falls from your chest as you rise to face Adam and ignore the blooming pain that radiates across your face.
The taste of nickel burns in your lungs, as a line of deep red falls from your lips and coats the yellow sun dress. The lace now ruined, as a stream of dripping blood falls, and taints the gift from Jake.
You can’t bring yourself to lift your hand and wipe the blood from your face. You can’t bring yourself to do anything other than stare at the monster from your past. The stream of blood coats your mouth and as you spit in the gravel, the bright red splatter spreads across the gravel. The amount of blood coating the ground is unsettling, and you wonder if your nose is now bleeding as well.
Your stare remains on Adam, though you can’t really see him as black spots fade in and out of your vision, making the world look distorted. A cloudy fog settles over your mind, and you can’t think of anything other than the pulsing ache that covers the left side of your face.
“Not so mouthy now are you, Angel?”
The name makes you recoil back into the pickup, and a small form of comfort holds you, as Josephine’s car seat digs into your back. Your babies weren’t here, they were safe. The small mantra plays on a loop in your mind, a minuscule but still present lifeline, that keeps you from slipping and crumbling into the girl you once were.
You hated the nickname, and not just because of the way it spilled from his tongue.
You’d grown numb to the cold spray of water cascading over your shivering form. The water had started hot with steam boiling over, and it had initially helped the tightness in your throat, though as the water cooled, your body had re-stiffened with it.
A shuddered gasp falls from your lips, as a sharp kick is felt in your middle and the small croak of air has you winching in pain. You move your shaking hand up over the spans of your neck and flinch as you make contact with the skin. You can feel a ghost of pressure still grasping at your neck; the weight of his hand closing around your throat as light black spots coated your vision.
The weight of the light t-shirt you wore drastically increased as it soaked up the water. Whether it was the events of the day, the fact that you were 7 months pregnant, or that your shirt actually did weigh a million pounds, didn’t matter.
You had still ended up in the same place, with a new set of bruises forming. You didn’t remember crawling to the shower, one minute you were against the hallway wall, and the next you were under the stream of water. Your lashes flutter as the weight of life rests on your shoulders, and for a moment you wish that you could slip into the abyss.
The crash of the bathroom door has your eyes flying open and your body pressing up against the shower wall, clinging to the white tile as Adam appears. The shaking in your body increases ten-fold and you no longer wonder if it is the freezing water.
Your hair hangs across your face as the water washes through it making it hard to see Adam, though you make no effort in clearing your line of sight. You can see his form enough to see the way he kneels down next to you and reaches out with a hand to touch your face. You can’t pull back any farther, no matter how hard you push into the wall in hopes of falling through, it doesn’t budge.
“You finally coherent, Angel?”
His tone is anything but worried and the name is one you haven’t heard before. A small nod and quiet ‘yes’ is all you give him, it was painful to talk, but you knew the consequences for not answering would hurt worse.
“You like the new name?” the hand against your cheek dips and pulls your head up to face him. “You just wouldn’t stop mumbling, begging for someone, something, to save you.”
You couldn’t remember any of what he was saying, sure you had begged before for it to be over, but you couldn’t remember doing it earlier.
Your bewildered expression, has him laying a slap against your face and the clatter of your teeth against the tile wall rings through the bathroom. You wince as Adam laughs, the sound pulses through your mind and eggs on the migraine that’s already formed.
“I can’t believe you don’t remember.” There’s a humor in his black eyes as he watches you, though your memory doesn’t recall anything. “Your little screams were music to my fucking ears. You just couldn’t stop begging to be saved. Angel, no one’s coming for you.”
The open-ended sentence catches your attention and causes you to look up at him, needing to know what happened in the span of time that’s missing from your memory.
“God doesn’t save fallen angels, y/n.”
You watch as he rises back up, away from you, and turns to head back out the bathroom door. Though before he closes it, he peers back over his shoulder at your shaking form.
“He leaves them to pay for their sins.”
The ache in your head only increases with every memory that flashes before your eyes, the rapid-fire succession of every gut-wrenching moment. The streetlights surrounding the lot start flashing to life and though it’s still daylight, the summer sun is quickly fading.
You hadn’t brought your phone with you, and you can only hope that someone comes looking for you. You were sure that it had been at least ten minutes, though the current state of your mind hinders you from believing in the accuracy of time.
Your eyes had remained on Adam, but unfocused and blurred. The movement of your head from side to side is slow, and you’re unsure if it’s the world or yourself that has fallen into a frozen moment of time.
Your world feels like it’s underwater, as only muffled voices pass through your ears. With every blink you take, your eyelids drop lower and beg to fall shut. Your mind only clears when your head is ripped up from its dipped position against the glass window of the pickup door.
Your vision centers on Adam as the hand grasping your chin slides down to tighten around your neck. You want to scream, to yell and fight back, but the only sounds you can make are mumbled pleas.
The hand grasping your neck tightens and finally you react, both of your hands fly up to clutch at Adam’s forearm. You claw at the skin and try to get him to release you. Though as your feet kick out, he slowly lifts you from the ground. Higher and higher, until you can’t support your body and the weight is focused directly on your throat, cutting off oxygen.
Your breath fails you, as small desperate puffs of air make their way past your lips. Its only when your head starts to lull to the side, and the flutter in your eyes slows drastically, that Adam finally drops you back to the ground.
You don’t catch yourself this time and the gravel of the lot digs into your knees, as your head falls forward just barely missing Adam’s body. Harsh gasps fall from you as your chest heaves, trying to drag in as much air as possible and gain back your sight. Your lashes flutter, though the black takes ages to disappear. The palm of your hands dig into the gravel, pleading for anything to ground you.
The blood surrounding your nose makes it so you have to gasp for air, and with each wheeze, the nickel taste in your mouth grows stronger. As your vision clears, you lift your head though it falls once again as your neck gives out under its weight. A curtain of hair falls around your face and moves ever so slightly with every shutter your body makes.
“You thought a new name and a pretty ring would change who you are.” A hand rakes through your hair as Adam pulls your trembling face up.  “No Angel, I still own you and I don’t appreciate your little disappearing act.”
You can’t bring yourself to look at him, no matter how much he yanks on your hair. It was too much. His presence suffocated you and pushed you into back into that hole of darkness. With no light, not for you at least.
“I know all about your little life, Angel. Your big happy family, the adorable little house he bought you, and how Mathew now has a sweet baby sister.”
Your head instantly snaps up at the mention of your family, of your babies, only to find a twisted smile watching you. The sick look has you spitting at him and a small laugh falls from you, as your blood and saliva drips down his cheek. The snap of the back of Adam's hand against your cheek no longer phases you. He could hit you, spew words laced with venom, and threaten you in every way, but he wasn’t allowed to mention your family.
“Fuck you.” The words fall from your lips with a rasp and a small chuckle leaves you. “I’ll die before I let you near them.”
Specs of blood fall from your mouth with each word and the consistent drip from your nose has you lifting a hand finally to wipe at your face. The wet warmth covers your hands and a small glance at your hands has you wiping them off on your dress. It was already ruined, what were a few more handprints added to the soiled fabric.
Your eyes settle on Adam, waiting for the expected out lash from him, though he only holds your gaze. You catch the slight twitch of his hand at his belt, though he doesn’t make a move for you. When he dropped you earlier, your form had landed farther from the truck and provided you with more space. You both remain watching each other, eyes never faltering and waiting to see who would make the first move.
Though your gaze quickly shifts to the side of Adam, as you hear a call for you. Both your gazes find Mathew, standing still at the front of the truck and staring in silent horror. Quickly your eyes shift to Adam, whose face hasn’t left Maty. The look on his face has your gut twisting, the depth of his eyes only seems to darken as he watches Mathew.
“Run.”
Your eyes connect with Mathew’s and you silently plea for him to listen to you, to get as far away from Adam as possible. The crunch of gravel has Adam’s eyes flying to you, your eyes hadn’t left Mathew until he had turned to run and in an instant, your blood-coated hand flies up without a second thought. The crack of bone against bone pierces your ears as Adam stumbles back slightly. Your form springs forward, and your sandals fall from your feet as you move to follow Mathew.
Though the moment of relief is quickly taken from you, as a sharp pain radiates through the back of your head. You don’t have the time to regain your balance, as another sharp pull sends you tumbling to the ground.
There is no saving your falling figure as the gravel embraces your body, and your head smacks down. The pain from Adam ripping is completely forgotten, as another takes its place. A small whine emits from your lips as your hand grazes the back of your head, only to be met with the sticky wet feeling of blood.
Your head falls to the side, hoping to get the pressure off the open wound and stop any gravel from further embedment in your skin. Your eyes just barely catch the sight of Mathew’s running form, and you think he’s screaming, but you can’t tell.  Everything hurts, and the prospect of darkness is welcomed.
You barely register the feeling of Adam clambering on top of your still form, your dress raises slightly, and you almost laugh at the fact that Jake stole your panties. The nudge of his leg between your thighs holds no weight, and the cool blade pressed against the column of your throat barely fazes you.
“You know, I am sad that you lost the baby.”
The words ring through your mind, and your lips silently tremble. The tears forming along your water line beg to fall, as your vision catches sight of a figure running towards you.
“I had planned to kill it myse–”
...
“Daddy!”
The scream echoed across the beach, and as if time had slowed each of your family members turned with Jake’s sprinting figure. He could feel it, Jake could feel it deep within his gut that whatever waited for him at the top of the hill was going to change everything.
His legs trembled as the sand slipped from under his feet, and his hands reached out to grasp Mathew’s shaking body. What felt like hours, was only seconds, and the sight of Mathew's tear-stained face made him Jake’s first priority. Mathew was shaking as words failed him and the mumbled sentence was barely auditable through his harsh sobs. Jake had crouched down and ran a hand throw the hair they’d both worked so hard on, calming the boy with each stroke.
“Momma. Momm–”
The mention of you had Jake’s eyes looking across the parking lot, only to find you, unmoving, with a man on top of you, and blood covering your face. Jake would have cried, and screamed at the world for what stood before his eyes, though the only thing that filled his body was white-hot rage.
“Jake wh–”
It was Rooster that had filled in the space behind him, having not seen you yet, he was still confused about what was happening.
“Get him out of here.”
Jake had made sure that Rooster had Mathew in his arms before he took off across the parking lot. The sight of you becoming clearer the closer Jake got, and the slight mumble on your lips was the only relief he found. You were still breathing; he hadn’t lost you yet.
The overhead light of the streetlamps cast a dull light over your blank face, and the glimmering flicker of a knife held against your neck. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think of anything other than protecting you.
The man hadn’t anticipated Jake, or the impact of his body crashing into him, activity ripping him from your still body. His body and mind hadn’t caught up with each other, and Jake was running on pure rage and instinct alone.
The gravel digs into Jake’s legs, the shorts not protecting him at all, though the pain was minimal in comparison to the agony that consumed his heart. He’d gotten the man on the ground, and the two of them tumbled until Jake was straddling his waist.
And finally, Jake saw his face. You had shown Jake pictures of Adam before, and he knew what the bastard looked like. Even with the blood, your blood, spattered on his clothes and face, Jake knew him.
The bastard that had hurt you so much in the past was right in front of him, and without a second thought, his fist crashed into Adam’s waiting face. The crack of Adam’s nose does nothing to calm his anger, as the picture of your vacant face flashes across his mind.
Jake lays another hit into his face, though Adam finally reacts and the knife laying idle in the gravel is quickly back in his hand and aimed for Jake. Whether it was anger, adrenalin, or a mix of the two, Jake couldn’t feel the slice of the blade across his torso.
Adam moves the knife again, this time aiming to stab at Jake’s chest. But before it can make contact, Jake’s own hand snaps out to grasp onto the wrist holding the knife. Then with the other hand, he’s ripping it from Adam’s hold and throwing the blade under the pickup.
“You fucking bastard.”
Punch after punch, the overwhelming need to see the asshole in pain drove Jake, and has a gasp falling from his lips. Jake is positive that tears are dripping from his eyes. It was as if his chest was on fire, the bastard had done this to you. Had ripped you apart and Jake wasn’t there to protect you. He should have checked on you sooner. He shouldn’t have let Mathew check on you. It was his fault that you were bleeding out.
Jake hadn’t realized that with every swing of his fist, small mumbles fell from his lips. Quiet pleas that you would be okay. He only stops for a moment to grasp at the bastard’s shirt and lift his head off the ground.
The smile that crosses Adam’s face makes Jake’s blood run cold. It’s pure reaction, with no thought, as Jake brings his fist back and lays into the man once again. Though this time the smile falls from Adam’s face, as his body goes limp in Jake’s hold. The blood coating his face wasn’t enough, it would never be enough.
Jake’s bleeding knuckles do nothing to ease the pain in his chest or the rage, that runs ramped through his veins. Whatever Jake did to the bastard, would never heal how much his heart had broken at the sight of you.
A loud gasp of breath has Jake’s head on a swivel looking back towards you, only to find Phoenix and Penny surrounding you. The pair of them work together in hopes of getting the bleeding to stop, changing out towels, no they had been using Josephine’s burp rages, and the blood had completely covered the baby pink towel his mother had given you.
Jake must release a sound of pain while looking at you because your eyes snap to him instantly and cause you to wince slightly. You find his gaze and focus in on him, his own eyes focusing on the rise and fall of your chest.
He had never seen your eyes look so lifeless. Your body was depleted of your soul, of the light that normally surrounded you, and left was a shell of the woman that he loved. Your lips move, though nothing comes out and with one last punch to the barely moving man under him, Jake is crawling towards you. The gravel is unnoticeable as it digs into his skin, as he settles next to you unsure if you want him to touch you. Though it’s your hand that releases Penny’s and grasps onto Jake’s like it was the anchor that kept you alive.
He had somehow missed the fact that your friends and family surrounded you, but with a glance at Rooster and Javy, the pair grab onto Adam’s motionless body and drag him behind the truck.
Jake knew he wasn’t dead; Jake hadn’t done that yet.
But once he woke up, Jake wasn’t sure that anyone could stop him from ending the asshole’s life.
You gasp for a breath of air, chest heaving to take in as much as possible. You can’t will your head to move, you knew that it was Jake who pulled Adam off you, but the ache in the back of your head was enough to hold you in place. To keep you from looking for your husband.
Your eyes flutter shut for a moment and play a countdown in your mind as numbers from 10 to 1 flash across your mind. You needed to breathe and slow your racing heart, though the task was easier said than done with the fire spreading through your chest.
You were sure you were going into shock, as your surroundings grew unnaturally quiet. Slowly you raise your hand to your throat, needing to feel if any damage was done. Though before your hand can make contact, someone’s hand is grasping onto your own and stopping you. Your eyes fly open again in panic, but the sight of your sister has you calming again.
Your eyes try and track the rush of bodies surrounding you, though it only makes your head hurt worse with each quick pass. Another body stops on the left side of you, placing a cloth against the back of your head, and bends to kiss your temple. You spot the flash of dark hair out the side of your eye before Nat comes into full view.
She looks at you with such pain and the silver along her waterline begs to fall. You squeeze Pen’s hand that is wrapped around your right one and flinch as your knuckles ache. Your mouth moves, though words won’t process, and your throat feels drier than the dessert. Your lip trembles, jumping with every shuttered breath you take.
“My babies?”
“Lacey has them. Don’t worry, they’re safe.”
The words barely make it out of Penny’s mouth before you gasp in relief as tears pool against your cheek. Your tears are unrelenting, though the broken sob to the left of you has you turning to look. Nat helps you turn your head, keeping the cloth against the back of your head and using enough pressure to stop the bleeding but not hurt you worse.
Your eyes instantly find Jake’s green one, and the sight of him makes another sob release from your chest causing it to heave. He does nothing to wipe the tears from his cheek, and before you know it, he’s clambering to you. You catch sight of his bleeding torso and the gravel burns on his knees, though neither seems to faze him.
He stops by your head but doesn’t reach out to you. He doesn’t look directly at your eyes, instead, his eyes remain on the middle of your chest that heaves with every breath. You can’t take the distance anymore; you needed Jake like you needed air.
You suck in a sharp breath of air as you release Penny’s and grasp onto Jake. The flash of pain that moves through your chest feels minimal in comparison to the need that you had for Jake. Your hair lays matted against the back of your head, but as Jake moves your head to rest in his lap, his fingers gently comb through it. He avoids the gash in the back of your and moves the rag that is slowly working to stop the bleeding. Instead, he focuses on the hair covering your face, brushing it gently to the side away from your eyes.
Jake’s eyes move across your body and take in every bruise that’s forming, the clear hand marks around your neck, and each speck of blood that litters your face. He has to force himself not to get up and start in on Adam again, wanting nothing more than to see him in just as much pain. Though he couldn’t be pissed right now, no matter how much he wanted to kill the bastard, he couldn’t. Not with you in such a fragile state still. Jake would make sure that you were okay, and then he would figure out his next move.
The Hard Deck was closed for the night, though from the outside it looked like it was up and running. The light from the bar looked like a beacon in the dark Californian night, mirroring the late nights of drinking and laughing that the squad had every Friday night. Though the shadows tonight, are those of your frantic family that works to clear a space for Jake to set you down. The late night at Hard Deck was anything but cheerful and happy.
Jake had checked with you outside, to see if you thought that you could be carried, and you had given a quiet ‘yes.’ He had scooped you up without a second thought and carried you into the bar bridal style, just like he had the night of your wedding.
Everything moved in slow motion, though you’re sure what seemed like hours to you was only minutes. Your eyes remained on Jake, his face provided a central focal point to watch and focus your hazy mind on. You could hear the voices of your family echoing off the walls, though everything slipped in one ear and out the other. Your head remains pressed up against Jake’s chest, as he whispers sweet nothings into your hair. His foot taps away as you wait for Nat to get the pool sticks and balls off the table before sitting you down.
The anxiety is unrelating as it courses through his body and each scenario that flashes through his mind gets increasingly worse. Jake’s hands never leave your body after he sits you down, moving to the side only when Penny or Nat appear with water and a blanket.
“We need to call an ambulance or take her to the hospital; we don’t know the full existe–”
“No.”
Your voice cracks, but it's loud enough that it stops Maverick from talking. You had yet to talk after they got you inside. Only releasing quiet whispers of ‘yes’ when asked, though the crack of your voice echoes across the bar and encases the room in a silence that has everyone looking at you.
“Y/n.”
This time it’s Penny that is trying to get you to agree, but your eyes stay focused on Jake. Begging for him to listen to you, to think of the effects that taking you to the hospital could cause.
“Sweets, we need to take you in. You don’t need to be scared; I’ll be with you the whole time.”
You almost laugh that your husband. You weren’t scared for yourself, far from it.
“Baby, you just got Lieutenant Commander.” Your voice cracks slightly and your release a broken cough. “I would be putting you in a position for someone to claim, disorderedly conduct.”
“Y/n that's highly unlikely.”
Your eyes cut from Jake to Mav as he says it, “But it’s a possibility?” He doesn’t make any move to correct you. “Exactly, and I won’t let it happen.”
“Sweets, my position doesn’t matter, as long as you’re okay.”
The hand resting in your lap rises to rest against Jake’s cheek, and your thumb gently strokes across the hidden dimple. You move forward slightly and lean up to place a kiss on his lips. Pulling back after your nose bumps into his and causes you to wince in pain.
“I’m saying no.” The protest is on the tip of his tongue, though you stop him before he can. “Jacob, you have never and will never make me do something I don’t want to. That’s one of the many ways you're different from him.”
The room sits in silence as everyone watches Jake. Each of them waits for Jake to tell you that you had to go in and that there was no decision to be made. Though your eyes remain focused on each other, and you slowly see his resolve chip away.
A stiff nod is all your get in answer, as he brushes a broken kiss across your brow. The harsh breath he releases is all the more proof of how much he disagrees and how he wishes he could tell you no. He wishes that he could make you listen, to demand you go in. No matter how terrified of losing you he was, he couldn’t push you. He wouldn’t force you to do something, even if his whole body begged him to.
“I’m going to listen to you, but that means you don’t protest what I do next.”
His voice is hard and chipped as he looks at you. His green eyes slowly track over your body and a sigh is released from his chest. You know that it’s just stress towards the situation and not aimed at you, but you can’t help be to feel horrible for putting him through this. You nod your head in answer, as you try and push yourself back farther on the pool table. Though the easy task proves to be difficult as a curse falls from your lips, and causes Jake to grasp your hips to lift you farther back. Jake’s hands rest on your hips and you give him a small grateful smile, before nodding along to his statement.
“Javy, call Monica and tell her to get down here.” The comment is thrown over his shoulder and you see Javy tense slightly before muttering an okay and going to make the call. If you hadn’t been in so much pain, you would have laughed at his shocked look.
Monica was a doctor on base, who Javy had been “seeing.” He claimed that they weren’t serious, but the message that showed up on his lock screen, while he was in the bathroom the other day, said differently. You hadn’t been snooping, he left his phone on the couch next to you and when a text showed up from “Baby” stating she loved him, you were quick to pull Jake to the kitchen and gossip.
“She needs to bring her med bag, Jav.”
He nods in understanding before heading outside to make the call. Penny brings over a warm wet cloth and the three of you work to wipe the blood from your face and body. The process is slow and makes you flinch when they ghost over a particularly sensitive spot. Occasion curses fall from Jake’s lips as he helps you. Though each swipe of the rag across your body seems to hurt him more than it does you.
He is quick to notice you watching him and a soft smile covers his frown, though your heart still aches to see him in pain. You had never been more thankful for Jake than you did at that moment. He protected you and made sure that the kids were safe, you would never be able to repay him for what he granted you. Though you hoped that your love for him would be enough of a thank you.
“He – Maty, he saw me.” The words bubble from your lips, and you can’t stop the way your lip quivers at the thought of your baby seeing you like that. “Is he okay?”
Your head falls to rest against Jake’s chest, as your tears finally break. He wraps a gentle hand around the back of your neck, and his thumb traces the base of your skull as he presses a kiss against the crown of your head.
“He’s okay sweetheart, they both are.” Your release a pained breath that causes Jake to tighten his hold on you slightly. “Lacey and Bob have them. The only thing you need to worry about is healing.”
You give a small nod, though you can’t help but feel bad that Mathew saw you like that. So broken and small, near lifeless. Everything you had been protecting him from for so long, was thrown out to lay in front of his feet. You hadn’t protected him from seeing it, just prolonged the inevitable.
Before long you're as clean as you’re going to get without a shower, and your shoulders finally relax as you release a tight breath. Penny moves to grab the pile of blood-stained bar rags from beside you on the pool table and goes to throw them in the wash. Your eyes finally track around the room and see everyone from the Dagger Squad still present, except Bob and Lacey.
You were thankful that they had taken the kids, they shouldn’t have to see you like this. Though the thought of a pregnant Lacey having to take care of your babies, makes you feel slightly guilty. She might have only been four months, but you knew that she was still having trouble with her nausea.
Almost everyone had dispersed around the bar after making sure that you were somewhat stable. But without everyone fluttering around you, your mind is left to wander. And wander it did. To the rasp of Adam’s words just before Jake ripped him off you, and what those words implied.
Jake had left you with Nat, to go talk with Javy about how long Monica would be, considering it was late at night and she was just getting off her shift on base. Though you’d tunned her voice out, even when she promised she’d be right back, you hadn’t heard. Not as your mind trailed off, each second leading you deeper, waiting to tip over the edge.
“I had planned to kill it myse–”
Adam hadn’t finished the sentence, but you knew what that final word was. You knew what he planned to do if you hadn’t miscarried. He wanted to rip your baby from your body. He hated you so much that he would have killed your sweet baby boy.
You miss it, the way that your body starts to rock back and forth, while your knees come up to tuck under your chin. The blanket in your lap drapes off the pool table, though your death grip on it keeps it from falling. Your eyes might have been open, but you couldn’t see anything other than your baby boy left to lay out in the gravel.
It would have been your fault because you couldn’t protect him. You hadn’t protected him anyway, and you lost him. Your baby boy was still dead, and it was your fault. You hadn’t stopped it then, and you wouldn’t have been able to stop it now.
You’re not sure when the tears started tracking down your face, but with each rock back and forth, your gasps for air only get more desperate. It’s the shaking that has you gripping onto the table, the green fabric doing nothing to ground you.
The words morph and distort with each loop around your mind. He planned to do it. To kill him. But he couldn’t because you’d already lost him.
You lost your baby.
You lost Elliot.
It was no one’s fault, but your own.
A scream rips from your chest, broken and full of agony. Though you’re not sure if it's real or if it was the constant screaming in your head, and you were finally hearing things. Had you finally tipped over the edge?
You couldn’t breathe, not when every breath ended with you screaming. The hands working against your arms feel like fire on you, and even with the silent pleas begging you to breathe it didn’t matter. You couldn’t see them, not anymore.
You couldn’t see anything but him.
Your eyes clench shut, as you beg and plea for the images to go away. You had been so numb, Adam wanted to kill you and yet you were numb to it. You would have done anything to be numb again. To have the pain that bloomed in your chest, be numb. To be able to cure the ache of losing him. You would have given anything, prayed to any god.
But Adam had been right, God wouldn’t save you.
Losing Elliot would be your punishment.
How had you screwed up in life so much that the universe hated you? That it deemed you such a horrible person, that you had to live with a gaping hole in your chest.
It’s the final scream that echoes across the Hard Deck, and out onto the deck that gains Jake's attention. He’d only left you for a moment to figure out how to handle Adam with Javy, though as he comes through the twin doors, he hates himself for leaving you.
Nat and Bradley grasp at your arms and try to pry them from your hair, to stop any further damage to your scalp. Jake is quick to knock their hands away and push them away from you. Panic attacks were rare for you, but when they happened it was never easy. Never small.
Your rocking form doesn’t still, though the delicate hand Jake places on your cheek make your back-and-forth movement stutter slightly.
“Sweetheart. Baby. Darlin’.”
The names fall from his lips broken and full of pain, and yet through the fog they reach you somehow. It always amazed and scared Jake how easily he could get through to you. He loved it because he was always able to help you. Though it terrified him, because he didn’t know what would happen if he died. If he wasn’t there to pull you back.
“Y/n. Sweets, breath for me baby.”
The comforting hand against your cheek pulls you, and his voice echoes over the ones in your head. Soothing and drawing you from the depths of your mind. Pulling you slowly from the hell that encased your mind and soul.
The sight of Jake’s emerald eyes staring into your own has a choked plea falling from you, as the world around you is forgotten. Anything that wasn’t Jake or the delicate words that fell from his lips disappeared. He was the anchor that held you in place, even during the worst storms.
Your lip only trembles slightly and though tears won’t stop falling, your breath slowly starts to even out. Your face leans farther into the hand resting on your cheek, and even though the pain in your chest is eased, it won’t leave.
Your voice is barely a whisper, though the words are clear as day for Jake.
“He wanted to kill Elliot.”
You hadn’t told your friend and family the name of your baby boy, you both wanted to keep it tucked away, only for the pair of you. Though as the name of his son plays through his mind, Jake couldn’t care if his family found out.
“Sweets?”
The name is question enough for you, as Jake’s lip trembles, and his eyes never drift from your own. Your breath had finally calmed and the hand grasping your own gives a small squeeze in question.
“Adam knew about him.” Your eyes fall shut and the words sit on the tip of your tongue. “He was going to kill Elliot if I hadn’t lost him.”
A shuttered breath leaves Jake and it’s your hand squeezing his in comfort. Losing your baby boy was like you had lost a piece of your soul, but anyone that said that a miscarriage wasn't as hard on fathers as it was on the mother, didn't know Jake.
“He said he was going to kill him; the bastard was going to kill my son?”
The question is choked and has Jake stepping back from you, as Penny reaches for you. You can only nod your head, as you slowly watch your husband break all over again. A hard gasp leaves his chest, and the hands resting on his knees threaten to give out.
The words fall from his mouth on repeat. You knew you had to tell him but to see Jake in pain all over again, made you wish you hadn’t. I was like the both of you were losing Elliot all over again. The wound had been ripped open and you didn’t know how to or even if it could be closed again.
It’s Bradley’s hand resting against his back, that has Jake standing up again. His tear-stained eyes look at you and find that you’ve calmed, that you were okay in Penny and Nat’s embrace. A harsh breath is sucked in through his nose and released out of the mouth. The deep breath does nothing to calm him and without a second thought, Jake places a gentle kiss on your brow, before heading out to the parking lot.
He can hear the guys behind him, Javy and Rooster calling out to him to slow down, but he couldn’t. The streetlights are the only thing that lights the pavement as Jake makes his way to the truck. They had thrown Adam in the bed of the truck and tied his wrists together, so they could figure out what they were going to do. Though the new information already has Jake’s mind made.
Jake moves without any hesitation as he cuts through the lot and looks up momentarily when the lamp post above him flickers. He rips open the front door of the trunk and grabs the keys from his pocket to start it up. With a flick of his wrist, the headlights beam across the lot and light the deserted area.
Jake doesn’t bother with shutting the door before he moves towards the back of the truck. The cool bite of the metal is harsh as his hand finds the latch on the tailgate and yanks it down. Jake knocks a hand into the base of Adam’s foot, waiting to see if he came to, before grasping onto the bastard’s boot and pulling him out. Adam’s body collides with the gravel and the man releases a deep moan. Rooster and Javy stand at the front of the truck, silently watching as the scene unfold, neither of them willing to step between Jake and the man.
The harsh landing doesn’t faze Jake, he doesn’t care if it hurt Adam. Hell, Jake wanted him to be in pain. He would be in pain; Jake would make sure of it. Instantly Jake’s hand is grasping onto the back of Adam’s shirt and dragging the man past Javy and Rooster, to throw him out in front of the headlights.
It was as if his skin had been set alight, and the only way to calm the flame would be through the bastard's misery. Jake watches Adam and takes in every shift or movement he made, as he slowly evaluates how he chooses to proceed. His hands were tied behind his back, meaning there wouldn’t be much of a fight, but a fight is exactly what Jake was looking for. To be able to hurt the bastard just as much, if not more, than he had hurt you.
“Knife, Rooster.”
His wingman watches him, unsure if he was willing to give Jake the knife. Bradley wasn’t sure how far Jake was planning to go, and he would rather not get yelled at by you for not stopping him. The knife rests in Bradley's hand, though he makes no move to give it to Jake and causes a deep groan to fall from Jake's lips, before walking to Bradley and ripping the blade from him.
Javy is quick to throw a hand against Bradley’s chest and stop him from following Jake. Javy had seen Jake like this before and he knew better than to get in his way. Unless you wanted to be the one that the knife was used against, you stayed out of Jake’s way.
A sharp kick to the ribs has Adam rolling from the force alone and Jake watches as he withers around, working to release the zip ties from his wrists. Though the movement only causes Adam’s face to press farther into the gravel, and he releases a deep groan in discomfort.  Jake watches for a moment and enjoys the look of terror that crosses Adam’s face as he catches a glimpse of the blade.
Though the image of you breaks through the barrier Jake had put up and he can’t see anything, other than you laid out lifelessly. A round of feet scuffing against the gravel lets him know that the rest of the guys had come out, though he doesn’t glance back at any of them, not even Maverick.
A heavy foot is placed on Adam’s back and causes the man to jolt, though Jake only focuses on cutting the zip ties from his wrists. The push and pull of the blade across the plastic is rough and hurried, leaving Jake to hope that the knife would “accidentally” cut the asshole in the process. The snap of the plastic has Jake pulling back from the man, and moving to hand the knife back to Rooster. The group of guys look at Jake in question, though a blank stare is the only reaction he gives them.
“Get up.” It’s a demand and the kick laid against Adam’s side plays as motivation. “You might be a piece of shit, but I’m not.”
He’s pacing, circling the bastard as if he was on the hunt and maybe he was. Jake Seresin wasn’t a man that anyone fucked with, he didn’t believe in new-aged laws. No, Jacob Grant Seresin believe in an eye for an eye, and he was out for blood.
“If we’re going to fight, it’s going to be real and not me taking cheap shots like you. When I’m finished with you, I want you to know that you couldn’t win, not because I fucked you over, but because you are a worthless piece of shit.” The crunch of gravel echoes through the silent lot as Jake crouches down and leans close to Adam’s ear, before uttering words specifically meant for him. “You are a fucking spoiled child, that only preys on people that are more vulnerable than you, and I can’t wait to turn the fucking tables.”
Jake watches as Adam gets up to stand, pushing off the ground himself and a small smirk crosses his face when he sees the black eye forming on Adam’s face already. Though the dried blood around his nose is only slightly rewarding, given the fact that it looks like Jake hadn’t broken his nose after all.
Jake waits for the man to acknowledge what he said, though he wasn’t excepting a smile to break out across the bastard’s face. The look has Jake clenching his fist, more than ready to move on Adam without a reply.
“Is it because you pity her? She has nothing else to offer, why else would you be with her.”
Jake’s breath catches in his throat, completely stunned that the asshole had brought you up. He not only brought you up but degraded you and acted as if you were nothing. Was he stupid enough to think that Jake wouldn’t react or was that the exact thing Adam wanted.
Jake doesn’t bother with replying, instead his fist makes contact with the side of Adam’s face and causes the man to stumble back. The naval ring resting on his hand catches Adam’s lip just right and splits it open, and the trickle of blood that falls from his lip has Jake smiling.
Adam bobs slightly, before grounding his feet in the gravel and moving towards Jake. His feet push forward, though they’re slow and uncalculated as if they held twenty-pound weights. With each step Adam makes towards Jake, Jake bounces lightly on his feet. Skirting around the ring of light as if the fight was only a game.
He pays no mind to the group of pilots surrounding them and remains focused on Adam, waiting for him to make a move. Adam’s hands move as slowly as his feet, and Jake easily steps back, dodging the blow.
Jake’s quick movement catches Adam by surprise and he falls forward, past Jake’s shoulder and nearly landing in the group of pilots. Adam’s anger only rises with each movement Jake uses to evade him, and the broken snarl he releases has Jake scoffing.
“I really expected more from you, thought that you would put up some form of fight.”
That signature smirk rests upon Jake’s lips, taunting the asshole in front of him and waiting for him to break. The words pull the wanted action from Adam, and an array of movements are aimed at Jake. Most fail to make contact, though a blow to Jake’s side has him wincing. Adam had taken the cheap shot, just like Jake said he would, and inflicted the blow on the cut he’d given Jake earlier.
The sharp intake of air has Adam laughing and pushing forward toward Jake. The green in Jake’s eyes only darkens with each step Adam takes closer and he’s quick to right his form.
“You really are only getting my scraps; y/n and the boy.”
If looks could kill, Adam would be 6 ft under. Left to rot with the Earthworms and fossils. Though Jake can’t seem to stop him, not yet. He needed to see just how far Adam would go if he could only spew venom at you.
“Even had one with her, a little girl. Yeah, she sure is cute. Miss Josephine.”
This time it’s not Jake stepping forward, but Rooster. He moves before anyone has time to react and lands a blow to Adam’s nose. Blood sprays from impact and coats the gravel, if it wasn’t broken before it was now.
“You don’t fucking talk about them.” Rooster jabs a sharp finger into Adam’s chest, as he stands chest to chest, more than ready to deliver another blow.
Though Adam pays no mind to Rooster and looks around him at Jake. The surrounding group is eerily quiet and waits in hope that the fight might finally be over. Jake was sure that Adam had a death wish, no person in their right mind would utter the words that he does next.
“Then there’s the fact that she lost your baby. Y/n got the job done before I had the chance.”
Time seemed to stop, Rooster might have delivered a second blow, though for Jake time stopped. The group watches as Jake moves, ready to cut in if he goes for Adam. Though Jake avoids Adam completely and goes to the open door of the pickup.
The words settled any doubt that Jake might have had about how worthy Adam was to live. He had sealed his own fate and Jake would be happy to play the grim reaper in Adam’s ending. Jake’s hand meets the cool metal handle that sits under the driver's seat and pulls a lock box from the small space.
Jake doesn’t have to look as he enters the code, flipping the lid open and grasping onto the handgun. You had known that Jake had a license to carry and while you weren’t one to handle firearms, you both decided that as long as it stayed in a locked box, Jake could have the gun in the pickup for safety reasons.
The gun remains unloaded, and Jake has to reach over into the glove compartment to grab the box of bullets.  It’s second nature as Jake loads the gun and moves back out to join the group. Javy catches sight of the gun before any of the others and moves to rest his hand on Jake’s shoulder.
“Jake, you do this and there’s no coming back.”
“There was on coming back after the bastard threaten the lives of the people I love.”
Penny and Nat had helped you move to a group of couches in the back corner, settling you in the worn leather with the blanket Penny always had in her office. Your sister had disappeared just after she got you settled, and Nat had kept you talking to keep your mind from wandering again.
“I still never found the candles.”
A smile crosses your face and has Nat instantly laughing along with you. Though your laughing is cut short as sharp pain cuts through your head. Your hands gently rise to rub at your temples, before glancing at Penny as she comes out of the back room.
“Pen, do you have any Tylenol? I hurt all over, but my head feels like been beaten in.” The two other women slightly grimace at your choice of words. “I mean it was technically.”
Their wide eyes watch you, unsure how to react. You can’t stop the smile that breaks out on your face as you start laughing and fall back against the couch. Your laughing slowly fades, and the smile on your face falls as your eyes slightly glaze over and fall to stare at the coffee table.
“Y/n, honey talk to us.”
Both of their hands rub up and down your arms, though you sit quietly. You had almost lost everything, if Jake came 5 seconds later and you would be dead. Your eyes flutter up to look at Nat and Penny, both sets of eyes look at you with tears in their eyes. All you can do is hum as you nod your head and your lips twist into a grimace.
“How about I go ask Javy how long Monica is going to be?” Your eyes stay cast to the ground, missing the way Pen and Nat look at each other. Defeated gazes that don’t know how to fix everything, from women that lived in control their whole lives.
“I’m just going to pop outside; you stay with her?”
Penny gives Nat and small ‘yes’ before leaning over to you and placing a kiss upon your brow. Her arms wrap around you, to hold you like she did when you were a child and you easily sink into her embrace.
He was seconds away from pulling the trigger. Jake had made his peace, he knew the consequences if he pulled it, but it felt like the only option. Adam didn’t deserve to live not after what happened in the past, and certainly not after what he did tonight.
“Jake, I want to kill him as much as you. Y/n’s like my little sister, but she needs you more than she needs him dead.”
Jake couldn’t take his eyes off Adam’s bleeding face, not even as his lip trembled, and tears threatened to fall. The night air had gone completely silent as if nature knew about the disturbing acts that had taken place in the last few hours. Every good piece of nature had scurried away, to hide from the broken man. Who was willing to lose everything, as long as it meant the people he loved were safe.
Jake hadn’t heard Nat show up to the circle, hadn’t heard the gasp that fell from her lips as she took in the scene. The headlights were blinding, though the sight of Jake with a gun in his hand, aiming directly for Adam’s forehead, wasn’t something she could miss.
The small tremble in Jake’s hand caused the gun to brush harshly against Adam’s forehead, and another choked sob falls from his lips.
“Why does he get to live.” Another sob eased with clenched teeth. “The bastard has assaulted, raped, mentally, and emotionally abused my wife, tried to kill her, traumatized my son, and admitted to planning to kill my unborn baby, but he gets to be let go.” The gun slowly falls from Adam's forehead, as Jake turns around to look at the people that had become his family. The tears rolling down his cheeks weren’t something anyone, but you saw. Though now as his lips and body tremble, it’s clear how much Jacob Seresin held in. “She may never be the same.” The fractured yell echoes, across the night, and falls into a whisper. “How is that fair?”
He was a broken man, that would never have enough time to grieve what he had lost, what you all lost.
It's Nat that steps forward from the group and moves towards Jake, slowly getting closer until she is right in front of him. Tears fill her eyes as she lays a hand to rest upon Jake’s cheek, and a defeated smile crosses her face.
“It’s not fair, I know, and I am so sorry.” A gentle hand slowly reaches out to Jake’s side and nudges the gun from his grasp. “But it will hurt them more if they lose you.”
The gun drops from Jake’s hand and Nat is quick to hand it over to Mav, who begins unloading it. Without a second thought, Nat pulls Jake into a tight hug, as sobs rack through the man’s body. She slowly pulls back, as her hands trace up and down Jake’s arms before giving his shoulders a reassuring squeeze.
“Here’s what’s going to happen; we are calling Y/n’s mom and dad, I know they are at a conference, but Admiral Benjamin needs to know. Then we are calling Cyclone, he loves Y/n like a daughter and even though we piss him off regularly, he will listen to what happened.” Nat’s eyes track around the group making sure that everyone was listening, they would all need to be on the same page if they wanted the plan to work without a hitch.
“Adam assaulted Y/n and Jake, as well as admitted to premeditated plans for murder. Every single one of you heard it, Coyote said Adam said it in front of you guys. Correct?” A round of nods come from the group before Nat steps away from Jake. “Adam can and will be tried in military court, and we are also filing for a restraining order.”
“What about the gun, Nix.”
“Bradley, my chicken, that’s easy. Adam had a knife, he cut Jake and had it against Y/n’s throat. Jake having the gun is the same level of confrontation, and he was reacting out of fear for his life.”
The tension seems to leave the group with the new plan in place. Though before they can disperse Nat, slowly walks toward Adam. “And if he tries to tell anyone different, he’s going to be going against nine of us. They won’t listen to anything he has to say.”
“Don’t tell Y/n right now, about what we’re doing. She’s already stressed.”
The last sentence falls off the tip of Jake’s tongue, just as Monica pulls into the open lot. A final look around the group confirms the decision and Jake already has his phone to call your father, while Javy and Nat take Monica to you.
Monica hadn’t asked any questions about what happened, her sole focus stayed on you and helping in any way she could without going to the hospital. She checked you for a concussion and said you had a minor one, and to expect blurry vision as well as avoid things that required your eyes to work. She promised that you would be fine, but it you started throwing up or your headaches worsened you had to come into the hospital immediately. Checking your cuts and bruise had been easy, while you would be sore, there was no apparent permanent damage done.
Four staples were added to the back of your head, but they were easily hidden by your hair. Jake also got ten stitches across his torso and was scolded for not placing a compression on it. The final piece to look at was the bruises that had been forming on your throat and face. Monica told you that you were lucky, that the line across your neck should have been a cut and you should thank whoever was watching over you. Your throat would be sore for a while and swelling was expected, but it could have been much worse.
You had given her a quiet thank you, before exchanging numbers. You both told Javy it was for medical needs, though in reality, it was so you could plan a get-together.
Throughout Monica looking you over, the Dagger Squad constantly bounced back and forth between coming inside and going outside. Though as each of them made rounds, they each stopped every time to check on you. You had no energy to question what was going on and just wanted to get to your bed, you could worry about their scheming tomorrow.
Finally, you were able to head home, Bob and Lacey texted and said they were keeping the kids for the night. While Nat and Bradley had already gone down and cleaned up the beach, putting everything in their car to be worried about later. The last thing was getting you in the pick-up, to which Jake insisted on carrying you.
On the way out, your eyes fell on Cyclone and Warlock who were talking to Mav while a group of naval personnel surrounded them. Cyclone had caught your eye and gave you a small smile as well as a wink before his attention was back on the jeep at the side of him. Your eyes followed the direction and found Adam cuffed in the backseat.
“Jake wh–”
Your words are quickly silenced, as Jake cuts you off and places you in the truck. He reaches across your waist to buckle you in, before placing a soft kiss on your lips, then each cheek, and finally your brow.
“I will explain everything in the morning, Sweets.”
You would protest, but you couldn’t remember the last time you were this tired and instead nod your head as you mutter ‘okay.’ The night drive lulls you into a peaceful sleep, with your head resting against the window while you track the condensation.  The 20-minute drive slips passed you, one minute Jake was buckling you in, and the next he was carrying you to your shared bedroom.
The push of the front door against the wall echoes through the quiet house. The silence in your home is eerie and slightly unsettling. The house was never quiet, not with two kids and the ensue of pilots that were always coming and going. Jake shuffles you slightly in his hold as he kicks his shoe off at the front door, causing a momentary disturbance through the house. You never liked a silent house, silent homes were for when the kids were sick, Jake was deployed, or at bedtime and even then, the house was never this quiet.
Jake easily carries you to your shared room, while avoiding anything that may bump into you and cause you any more discomfort. He settles you on the bed slowly and you grimace at the way your blood-stained dress stands out against the pristine sheets and comforter.
Getting out of your dress proved to be difficult, while it would have normally slipped over your head and off, each movement you make has some part of your body aching. Though with Jake’s help, the two of you were able to get it off you without too much hassle.
“Come on Sweets, let’s get you showered and ready for bed.”
A hand is placed against your bare back and the two of you slowly make your way to the ensuite. Though your head spins in the short distance to the bathroom, and after you stumble the second time, Jake scopes you up to set you on the vanity.
“Sorry.” Your voice is meek as you say it and your eyes stay cast down looking at the tile. The small catch in your throat makes Jake’s heart clench, as your voice trembles. “Everything is still swaying.”
A small scoff falls from Jake’s lips before he is tipping your head back to look at him.
“You have no reason to be sorry.” A tear falls and Jake’s thumb is quick to catch it and wipe it away. “Nothing that happened today or in the past is your fault. Okay?”
Your lips tremble as you nod once. Jake might have said it wasn’t your fault, but that didn’t make it feel any less like your fault. Your eyes move from Jake’s eyes and the look of pity it feels like he’s giving you. You knew that he wasn’t, Jake never looked at you like that. Though Adam had reopened boxes that you had buried away and ways of thinking that revolved around self-destruction.
You catch a glimpse of your reflection in the mirror behind you, and a harsh gasp falls from your lips as a new onset of tears fall. You hadn’t seen yourself all night, though now looking at yourself you don’t know how to feel.
Jake brushes his lips against your cheek, as your opposite hand comes to trace along the bruise that’s marring your face. You flinch slightly as you barely touch the dark purple and red that’s focused around your eye socket. You hadn’t noticed it before, but now looking at your face you can see the blood vessels in your eye that popped from impact. Your stomach rolls at the sight, though you can’t bring yourself to look away.
It’s when your eyes travel down to your neck that you have to look away. A loud sob falls from your lips as you bury yourself in Jake’s chest. A clear line sat across the front of your neck, and you can’t help but wonder how you hadn’t been cut. Monica’s words echo in your mind and you silently wonder. There’s an array of bruising that wraps around your throat and collarbones, though you can’t bring yourself to look at them. The small glance was more than enough.
You shake as tears fall and gasp quietly into Jake’s chest. Both of his arms wrap around you, to create a blanket of security as his fingers trace up and down your spine. One of his hands gently catch in your hair and you wince as a tiny whimper falls from you. Jake gently undoes the tangles in your hair, but your sobs only get louder.
He hadn’t meant to, but the slight tug of your hair only triggered memories of what happened today. You had ended up cutting your hair just after you moved to Florida with Adam, it had been after a bad fight when he had ripped a chunk of your hair out, from pulling it so hard. From then on you had short hair, and it stay at shoulder length up until the point you moved home.
It had been freeing to be able to grow it out again and over the last 6 years, you had never been worried about your hair getting in the way or how it could be used against you again. That was until tonight, and now the thought of it made you sick.
In such a short time period, all of the progress you had made was thrown into the wash. He had ruined something that you loved so much and made it into this heavy reminder. Another physical carrier of your trauma, bruises would fade, and cuts would heal. Though if you didn’t take the step, it would be a permanent reminder.
A quiet nagging voice every time you look at it; with his hands running through it, as the whites of his knuckles light up with each strand that wraps around his hand.
“I want it off.”
Jake’s hand drops from your back immediately as you start you shake and cry, his hand instead moves to hold onto your tear-stricken face. He brushes the stray strands of hair on your face back easily, so he can look at you as mumbled words continue falling from your lips. He watches silently as your eyes flutter around the room, and never stay focused on one place.
“I need it gone. I can feel his hands, Jake.”
Both of his hands grasp onto your cheeks lightly, but steady enough that you can’t look away from him. The tears cloud your eyes, as one of your hands comes to wrap around the back of your scalp, cradling the area that the pressure radiates from.
“Darlin’ look at me, what do you need to be gone?”
A broken sob racks through your chest, as it heaves to gain any sort of air, and stop the looming feeling of suffocation.
“My hair, Jake. I can’t stop feeling his hands in it, how he wrapped it around his knuckle. He used it against me, used it to pull me back from Maty.”
Your words are broken and desperate as Jake wraps you tightly in his arms and kisses the top of your head. You try to pull away, disgusted with yourself and what happened. Though Jake doesn’t let you and as your crying amplifies, your fists work against Jake’s chest.
An on slay of emotions and thoughts; hatred, panic, heartbreak, anger, confusion, anxiety, and hatred, at yourself, at the world, at Adam. Haunted sobs of the past push passed your lips and with each one, you pound into Jake’s chest. Though he doesn’t let go; he won’t let you pull away to face this on your own.
Sweet nothings are whispered into your hair, and finally your tire yourself out. To the point that the small shutters that encase your body are the only movement, you’re capable of. You pull back from Jake and you had never felt such defeat in yourself, to see how strong of a hold Adam still has on you.
“He broke me.”
The words are dull and lifeless as they ring through Jake’s ears and for a moment, he wishes Nat wouldn’t have stopped him. That Jake would have been able to pull the trigger and tell you that you would never see the bastard again.
“You, my beautiful, amazing, strong, loving wife, are not broken.” You lean farther to the hand resting against your cheek, as his thumb rubs small circles against your cheekbone. “And even if you were, I would find every single piece and put you back together, no matter how long it took.” A gentle kiss is placed over each tear-stained cheek. “You amaze me every single day, and I couldn’t ask for a better wife or mother for my children.”
You sniffle slightly, as your tears slow and your nose becomes overly stuffy from the amount that you’ve cried. Your lips tremble and the small ‘really’ that you release in question, cracks Jake’s heart a little more.
“Yes, my Sweets. I hate that you can’t see how extraordinary you are.” Your eyes fall shut as you lean into Jake’s chest and place a kiss on the spot where his heart rests. “Though if we need to cut off some or all of your hair, to feel free, then we are doing it.”
A true genuine smile crosses your lips, and you wonder how you had gotten such an amazing man. You’re unsure of who you tricked because you most defiantly didn’t deserve Jake, not with all your baggage. But somehow, he had come into your life and decided that your baggage was his.
“I love you.”
“Darlin’ I love you so much more.”

Little sneak peek of my new Jake fic, ‘Always A Bridesmaid’ bc why not! (:
Jake Seresin x female Bradshaw!reader
Summary: Bradley tells all the guys at his wedding that his little sister is off limits… But when has Jake ever listened to Rooster?
warnings: none in this sneak peek other than mentions of alcohol/drinking i think, but the full fic will contain smut! 18+ minors dni
...
After sharing a dance with your dear Uncle Mav and relinquishing him back into the awaiting arms of Penny, you spend the next half hour moping at the table on your own.
Little did you know, that earlier that morning while Bradley and his groomsmen were getting ready in a suite separate from the girls, your brother had had a “talk” with all the guys.
Debriefing about last night’s rehearsal dinner, Hangman, Coyote, and Fanboy—all of the single groomsmen—had been discussing a few of Natasha’s bridesmaids that they thought were cute.
Besides, Rooster was far too busy dancing with Phoenix, the newlywed couple far too preoccupied with making heart-eyes at each other to notice him making his way over to you.
“Tequila Sunrise, and it’s an open bar so… no, you can’t buy me a drink.” You roll your eyes at the almost too handsome pilot.
Oh. Pretty and feisty. Jake was going to have a hard time staying away from you.
“Well then, how about I acquire you another one, and because I’m such a nice guy, I’ll even join you?” Jake winked at you and stood, striding towards the bar before you could even answer his question.

Pine Cone
25 Days of Ficmas
Relationship: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x Reader
Fandom: Top Gun: Maverick
Request: No
Warnings: Fluff
Word Count: 1,336
Masterlist: Here
Summary: Jake rdecides that he is going to show his girlfriend the lovely Seresin family holiday tradition of making a pine bonfire in the backyard.
Tumblr media
You would think for a southern state, Texas does not get cold during winter, but you would be wrong. No, they do not have blankets of snow, but it is still cold. And there are many different ways of keeping warm on those cold nights. You could bundle up or stay indoors, but not the Seresin family. They had a rather enjoyable family tradition.
“Trust me, you’re going to love this. We’ve been doing this since we were kids, babe!” Jake exclaimed as he drove his truck down the gravel road to his family home. The woman in his passenger seat giggled as she watched her boyfriend get excited about visiting his family for the holidays. Getting the leave from the navy to do this was difficult enough, coupled with the fact that they had several wrecks and events that prolonged the already long drive from California to Texas, she was just glad to see the house in view finally.
“You really think they’ll like me?” She wondered, eyes fixated down onto her hands that were fidgeting. Once they were parked, Jake turned in his seat to grab his lover’s hands. He forced her to look in his eyes instead of away, and held her.
“Of course. I especially know my mom will love you. You have nothing to worry about. And if anyone says anything to you about it, just let me know. We can leave anytime you want.” His words were so sincere that she had no other choice than to believe him. She leaned over and pecked him gently on the lips, which made him smile. However, he chased after and pressed a longer kiss to her. She could not contain her giggles as they sat there for several moments. Jake pressed his forehead against her own.
“Ready?” He whispered, closing his eyes and enjoying his time alone with his lover.
“Ready.” She confirmed, allowing her eyes to close as well. After a moment more, the couple made their way out of the truck that was parked in the gravel by the side of the house, and up to the front door. Jake grabbed her hand in his, and knocked with is free hand. A set of loud howls sounded shortly after the knocks, and that was the last warning before chaos ensued. Once that door opened, two large dogs bolted out of the home, and jumped straight onto Jake. He let go at the last minute to catch them, making sure that his girlfriend did not also fall over by the weight of the hounds.
A coonhound and border collie sat their wagging their tales over the body of her lover, licking and jumping over him in pure excitement. Hangman kept laughing and petting the dogs as he allowed them to get their excited energy out. As soon as the dogs eased up though, the man was still not safe. Several small children crashed into him as he tried to stand back up. However, unlike the dogs, he simply picked up as many of them as he could before walking into the home where his family was.
“We’re here!” He called out, dropping the children safely on the ground. They all ran to do something else expect for one little boy who just wanted to stay near Jake the entire time. Said man was met with lots of hello’s and people coming up to wrap him in hugs. Hangman turned around with his nephew on his back and beckoned his lover over.
“Everyone, this is my girlfriend.” His introduction prompted everyone to turn their attentions to her instead. She was greeted with open arms, literally. Everyone took the time to learn her name, and provide her with theirs, and genuinely seemed to take interest in her. Slowly, but surely, her anxiety dissipated from her thoughts until she was genuinely comfortable with everyone there. Food was passed around and stories were shared. No one made any out of line comments or made her feel unwelcome; she did not know what she was afraid of in the first place.
It all passed so fast for her, that before she knew it, she was tucked into Jake’s side on the couch nursing a drink in her hand. With her lover next to her, she fell into conversations easily with those around her. And even though she was still wearing her jacket and shoes, the cold slipped in between the layers of fabric. Jake noticed and tried his best to keep her warm, but it was just one of those nights. Those kinds of nights where cold seeps into your bones and will not leave. It seemed that a lot of the other people around were trying desperately to stay warm, but failing too.
“Momma, I think it’s time.” Jake called out as his mom tried to stoke the fire bigger. She sighed, and relented, knowing he was right. But the girl tucked into Hangman’s side was utterly confused.
“What’s going on?” She whispered as her boyfriend stood up, and pulled her to him. He placed his beanie on her head and dragged her to the back door.
“Seresin family tradition, dear. You’ll see.” And with that, the whole Seresin clan took off into the woods that encompassed their back yard. Yet, she was still confused. She did not know what they were doing out there or what she was waiting to see. Jake took her hand and led her to a large pine tree, where he stood with a large smile.
“Jake, what is going on?” She pestered. She was cold, and tired, and wanted to be warm. But Jake started to pick up pine cones and needles in his large hands.
“Grab some. Come on!” He looked like a kid in a candy store as he ran around picking up more materials. Even though she did not understand, she joined him anyways. They worked for a few minutes picking up fresh needles from branches that were low, and dried old needles from the ground that had already fallen and turned brown. Making sure the pine cones that grasped were also dry, the couple went back to where the rest of the family was slowly, but surely returning.
As everyone approached, they dumped their armfuls of tinder into the fire pit that she was now noticing. She joined Jake in dumping their own armfuls, and then he pulled her back a ways. Momma Seresin came up shortly afterwards with a lighter, and then, poof. The pit had erupted into flames as the pine caught the fire that was there. Soon enough, smoke was filtering upwards as the fire roared on, but the comforting smell of pine drifted into her nose. She watched the bonfire burn and pop as they continued on with their night. Even though they were outside, the whole family felt warmer than ever. She turned in Jake’s arms from where they sat in front of the pit, with a confused expression on her face.
“When we were kids, my siblings and I would burn the excess pine in the yard cause we didn’t need it in the compost. We’d spend the whole night out here, burning stuff, playing around, even sleeping when it got late enough. Eventually, the adults saw what we were doing and joined us. So now, it’s our little tradition. When it gets cold enough, nothing warms you up like a pine fire.” His eyes stared longingly at the fire before them, and his grin told her that he was reminiscing about his childhood.
“Well, when we get our new house, I’ll make sure we have a bonfire pit. I’ll even find somewhere to get us some pine cones.” She commented, watching his face intently. Jake chuckled lightly and turned back to the woman in his arms. He kept laughing as he pressed a kiss to her forehead and pulled her in closer. Something told her that she was about to have a lot more bonfires to sit around.

ok so we all know Jake is possessive as shit but is it just me that can see him eventually getting to a point where he’s out with his girl and is like yeah baby get those free drinks
like he knows you’re going home with him and him only and he’s got an eye on you if the situation were to go south. but he just has to hold back a laugh when the guy who bought the drinks realizes you have a boyfriend/husband
wkfhskdjsk no, because i can see him getting there as well!! jake might be possessive as shit (because his), but i firmly believe he 100% gets to that point - just because he is there looking out for you in case anything gets out of hand, and c’mon he trusts you 100% - so it just becomes fun for him to watch.
-
“Can I buy you a drink?”
You are standing by the bar, tapping your card on the counter in habit while waiting for the bartender, Kevin, to finish up with the customer he is currently serving when you hear the voice sidle up beside you.
“Thanks, but I got it,” you take a glance towards the stranger on your right, flashing a polite smile. He is good looking no doubt, but you aren’t interested.
“C’mon, no lady should need to buy her own drinks,” the stranger tries again, while propping a forearm onto the bar counter, his body turning, stance open to face you in a casual confidence.
“What can I get you?” Kevin brings his attention to you both. You open your mouth to speak, but the stranger gets there before you do.
“I’ll have a beer, and whatever she’s having,” he drawls, confidently. You hazard another glance towards him only to receive a wink in return.
“I ca-”
“I insist,” he cuts you off almost immediately and you take in his stance, the insistence radiating off his being and you shrug, before turning to Kevin, whose lips now bear an amused quirk; something that one would think is a showcase of amusement at the scene unfolding in front of him, but you know better.
“The usual?” Kevin cuts in, his lips now split into a toothy grin.
“Sure,” you shrug, relenting and Kevin nods lightly, hand already reaching for the card machine, fingers punching in numbers, before he proffers the machine to the stranger who taps his card against the reader.
“So, you come here often?” The stranger asks, and you shrug nonchalantly,
“Now and then.”
“I’m Nick,” he introduces himself, body shuffling forward and closer to you. You smile to be polite, but don’t offer up your own name in response.
“So are you going to give me a name?” Nick asks, leaning forward slightly. It makes you slide back just an inch, “it’s the least you could do.”
“Alright, three beers,” you are saved from responding as Kevin thunks down the uncapped bottles down in front of you both, sliding one towards Nick, and the other two towards you.
“Your usual is two beers?” Nick tilts his head, eyes darting from the sweating bottles and back to you.
“Yup,” you pick the bottles up, one in each hand, nodding a thanks to Kevin, who you note has a lazy wide grin on his face of someone who had seen this happen one too many times “our usual is a beer each” you say simply, while tilting your chin towards the back of the space.
You watch it unfold, Nick’s eyes following the direction of the tilt of your chin, before landing on one Jake Seresin, lounging in his seat, back leaning against the wall, marinating in a quiet kind of smugness, his gazed fixed on you.
“Thanks for the beers though,” you say, with a small upward curve of your lips, eyes taking in Nick’s jaw which has unhinged itself, as his mind whirls, no doubt the collect itself, “they are, very much appreciated.”
You clink one of the bottles you are holding in a hand against Nick’s own which is still standing on the counter before pivoting on your heel to pick your way back to Jake.
“Who should I be thanking this time darlin?” Jake greets you, his eyes dancing with mirth as you set both bottles down on the table.
“You’ve started to enjoy this a bit too much,” you say, as you squint up, eyes narrowing slightly, at Jake who pulls a bottle off the table and raises it in the air, no doubt at Nick, who you are sure, has post the thanks from Jake, scurried off in annoyance.
“It’s a treat,” Jake drawls, reaching over to slide his fingers beneath your chin, tiling your head up and towards him, before tugging your face lightly towards his own; you can feel the warmth of his breath fanning lightly across your own lips, “free drinks, and the knowledge that they’ll never have you because you’re mine,” he chuckles lowly, before brushing his lips against yours, the ending to his sentence something you feel against your own lips, “nothing more a man could ask for.”

Rewrite the Stars
Song- ‘Rewrite the Stars’ by James Arthur and Anne-Marie
Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin x aviator reader/soulmate- callsign ‘Sunshine’
Warnings: mentions of cheating. Fluff. Angst. Enjoy!!
Summary: On Sunshine’s wedding day, Hangman stands in the distance watching his best friend about to make the worst decision of her life. Will he stop her and let her see how he deserves her more than her fiancé? Or will he let her go?
You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
You know you want me
So don't keep saying our hands are tied
You claim it's not in the cards
And fate is pulling you miles away
And out of a reach from me
But you're hearing my heart
So who can stop me if I decide it's on my destiny?
Hangman’s POV
The warm Sunday morning breeze of San Diego, brushed against my face as I stepped out of my Red Silverado, and grabbed the large bouquet of flowers from the passenger seat. I then took my feet towards the door of the large white church that was in the distance. The reason why I’m here today: Well, my best friend is getting married, she’s actually in the church, preparing herself in the back room, waiting for her groom to arrive. The groom that wasn’t me. It stabbed my heart the day I got the news in a beautiful dark blue envelope, with her initials and the initials of her fiancé, John Tucker. Ugh! I know who that sucker was, he was suddenly transferred from my unit in San Diego to be in Rhode Island where Sunshine was at, right after he found out that her and I had broke it off. Sunshine and I were in a 4 month relationship, it was great and beautiful, oddly enough it was like we were meant for each other, but sadly enough, with the lives we led as Naval Aviators, it separated us, as they transferred us to different units, and because she was still an Officer, and so was I, we couldn’t request transfer to stay with each other, because we weren’t married and such. So we peacefully broke it off, promising that we’d still be best friends, which up until this day we are. But though I should be happy for my friend, I wasn’t, especially when I knew who she was marrying too. I had heard that Tucker was toxic and controlling, from girls that used to date him, I also heard that every relationship he ever had, had ended because of him, because he cheated. And knowing she was ‘marrying’ him, made he scared to think about the undeserving problems he was probably going to put her through. And Sunshine was a sweet girl, always happy and had such a charismatic personality, helpful, lovable, and was always singing, dancing, basically doing anything to make her friends lively and happy. And that’s what had made me fall in love with her, she was never afraid to show off her true self, even if it was loud, funny and sweet. (Why do you think her callsign is ‘Sunshine’?) I knew she loved me deeply, she always told me that, and that we were probably soulmates, but in the wrong timeline, and I had to sadly agree. We were afraid to tie the knot, because it was still to early, and still so much to learn from one another, though I know that deep down we both believed it was supposed to happen. So anyways.. now I walked into the church, which was covered in bluebonnets and Bellflowers, the colors and flowers that I knew wasn’t Sunshine’s preference, she actually loved Sunflowers instead. Why I know? Because I actually care about her interests, not like this dumbbell Tucker. The first person I see as I walk in was Phoenix, she was waiting for me to arrive with the bouquet, that I had picked up from her house, because she accidentally forgot it. I heard that Sunshine begged Tucker to pick Phoenix to be her maid of honor, which I thought was crazy to be begging but glad she got her choice, which is absolutely cool. But now, Phoenix walked up to me with a great smile and open arms as she thanked me repeatedly,
“Thank you thank you thank you!!! Oh my goodness she would’ve killed me if she found out I forgot!!”
I let out a laugh at Phoenix’s dramatics as she held the bouquet close to her chest happily and sigh out loudly. I then asked curiously while looking around,
“So when are the guests going to arrive?”
Checking the large clock hanging in the back, Phoenix then responded,
“In about a couple of hours, Sunshine is almost ready.. but she’s just waiting for Tucker to arrive. Which sound’ve been a few minutes ago, he wanted to have a ‘first look’.”
I almost rolled my eyes at her saying he wanted ‘first look’, from the moment I saw the invitation to now, I haven’t seen anything that shows that Sunshine had any choice in this. Which is sad, the wedding is mostly for the bride, so she can be shown off and have the most amazing and beautiful wedding ever, Sunshine should be able to make choices freely. God I can only imagine the dress she’s probably wearing, she probably hates it if he’s the one choosing everything. I’d never do that, I’d let her pick the most beautiful dress she wanted, I’d give her everything on a golden, diamond plate if she asked, have it done on the most beautiful plains of Texas like she had always told me. But Just as I was about to emerge into small conversation with Phoenix, Rooster walked in behind us, and sounded like he was out of breath,
“Hangs I need to talk to you!”
I turned my head to find Rooster in a mess, his hair was disheveled and his tuxedo was out of place, making me walk up to him quickly as I asked while trying to ruffle his hair,
“What in the world happened to you? You look a mess!-“
“You’ll know why when I talk to you.”
Rooster then looked at Phoenix as he sent her a warm smile,
“Nix, can you go to the back with Sunshine please?”
Phoenix didn’t look to happy to not be able to hear the tea, but she listened either way as she sent him a nod then a ‘thank you’ to me as she walked away. Once she was out of sight Rooster sat me down in one of the benches as he opened his phone and searched frantically,
“Rooster what the hell is up? Did you forget to pick up the cake or what-“
“Shut up and look! What do you see?”
Rooster practically shoved the phone in my face, making me look at the most disgusting and degrading photo of two people doing the deed. One which was one of the bridesmaids, and the man.. for Texas’ sake I wanted to throw up, John freaking Tucker! My heart dropped and broke for Sunshine, she was just about to marry a cheater, and a disloyal man. I immediately got up and told Rooster,
“There’s no way you’re not letting this pass-“
  “What do you mean Hangs-“
“What do I mean! Roos we have to tell her! This isn’t fair to her, she’s the sweetest most loyal girl I know, and she’s marrying that piece of garbage?! When was this?”
Rooster stood up next to me as he dreadfully said,
“Last night.. he accidentally sent it to me I guess, because he immediately apologized and tried to tell me to not say anything... but I don’t do what I’m told man.. I had to tell you. But what are we going to do now?”
I was growing furious as the seconds passed, and I had also made up my mind, I was going to tell her. Even if it hurt and was the worst thing I could ever say, I had to.
“I’m going to tell her, I have to, we’d look just as bad as Tucker, if we kept that lie and secret from her.”
Rooster seemed to agree with me as he said,
“Ok then.. come on, you got some explaining to do, you know she’ll listen to you more than anyone else, she trusts you.”
“I know.. damn I’m hating this more and more..”
What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
Nothing could keep us apart
You'll be the one I was meant to find
It's up to you, and it's up to me
No one could say what we get to be
So why don't we rewrite the stars?
And maybe the world could be ours, tonight
I began to walk towards the rooms in the back of the church, and as I got closer to her dressing room, I could hear the laughters and sweet giggles she let out, I bet at Phoenix’s silly jokes and teasing. It only me hurt more for her, maybe I shouldn’t tell her I thought, but then what kind of friend would I be? As I friend I protect and do my very best to keep her safe, because I truly love her, in any other dimension I’d give anything to be her groom. But unfortunately, that wasn’t written in the books for me, or so I thought. I finally approached the door, and as I stood in front of it, I felt scared all of a sudden, and an uncertainty, what if I was about to ruin something that Sunshine believed was perfect? What if she took my way of trying to save her, as if I was trying to ruin everything? But before I could back down, the door swung open as Phoenix cane face to face with me, and quickly her face held a frown,
“Bagman? What are you doing here?”
I went completely out of words, like if the wind knocked me out as well as my capability to speak! But my man Rooster saved me a moment as he pushed me toward with room saying simply,
“He needs to talk to Sunshine.. come on Nix.”
Phoenix quickly gave me the moment as she then called out to Sunshine,
“Hey Sunshine! I’ll be right back! I need to check something!”
I heard Sunshine shout from the back as she said,
“Oh ok!! Take your time it’s ok!!”
Phoenix then walked out in hand with Rooster, so I closed the door behind me, and took in the room, it smelled so sweet, like vanilla... and Sunshine. I knew her scent, and oh dear did she always smell so sweet and fresh. I began to take small steps to look for where exactly she was, but I heard a small distinctive noises that put me to a halt, muffled sobs, and sniffling, which I knew came from Sunshine, she was the only one in the room, and that’s when I practically jogged to her calling out calmly,
“Sunshine! It’s me Hangs, are you ok?”
I stopped in front of a door that was closed, and when I had called out the crying and stopped, and I could hear her take a deep breath before saying weepingly,
  “Hangman? You’re early.”
Oh, I didn’t expect that sentence, maybe she didn’t want me here.. ugh this is going to be bad then-
  “Can you come in please?”
Her little broken voice tore through my thoughts but I reacted quickly as I slowly opened the door, to a beautiful, broken and crying bride. She sat on the floor holding herself as she continued to let out soft sobs, I right away got down on my knees in front of her, as I pulled her delicate hands into one of my calloused ones, and asked her while trying to clean her tears with my free hand,
“Why are you crying? You’re supposed to be... you know.. happy.”
Sunshine’s POV
You think it's easy
You think I don't wanna run to you, yeah
But there are mountains (But there are mountains)
And there are doors that we can't walk through
I know you're wondering why
Because we're able to be just you and me within these walls
But when we go outside
You're gonna wake up and see that it was hopeless after all
I knew why Hangman was here, which made it all worse, God knew I’d do anything to ask him in that moment to take me to his place so I could crawl into his arms and beg him to never let me go. But those wishes weren’t coming true at any moment if not ever, or so I thought. I was still madly in love with Hangman, but our careers drove us apart, hence why we stayed friends and never pushed for more. But anyways, I knew why he was here, he must’ve found out that Tucker cheated on me last night, with one of my bridesmaids. So before he could say anything I cut him to the chase as I wiped my tears,
“I know Tucker cheated on me Hangs, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m going to marry him.”
I didn’t look at Hangman to see his disappointment as he abruptly stood up scoffing at me,
“You’ve got to be kidding me?! You know and don’t want to face it! Why-“
“Because it’s a marriage of convenience! Not because I love him, but because of what I can get out of it. His father will let me finally rank up to my deserving place, and I won’t be stuck here in Nevada but in San Diego! Where you will be.”
That was the truth, I was never in love with Tucker, but his father which was my Admiral, pushed the issue, he blackmailed me into the marriage, and being the dumbass I was, I fell into it. I figured I could marry him, get my position, and soon divorce him. Yes, it was a mess and a disaster, but I fell under the toxic control of Lieutenant Tucker and Admiral Tucker, and had to find a way out. The deal was that I marry him and stay with him for at least five years, where the both of us would get the benefits, and my wanted position, then if I wanted to, I could leave. (And of course I’d leave, I was going to run!!) But, I had heard from Tucker’s last ex, that he was possessive and controlling, making me believe that leaving him was probably not going to be the easiest thing. But now here I stand, in my dressing room, in an obnoxious large white dress, that I hate because it’s so low cut I can almost fell like my boobs will burst out, and it’s so big I feel like a pumpkin. The colors of makeup on my face were so dark and not fitting for this season, I wanted sunflowers, not blue and purple themed flowers. It took me days to beg to have the wedding in San Diego and have Phoenix as my maid of honor, everyone else that were close friends couldn’t be a part of that group but Nix. Now, I finally looked up to Hangman and saw how the green, beautiful eyes I had missed and fallen in love with, look down at me with the most hurt I had ever seen them in. He then said in a low whisper,
“Why? You think you’re worth a convenience and not true loyalty and love? Where is your dignity in this?”
His words were deep and penetrated my heart, I knew I was worth more and I deserved better, but my actions showed differently. As I was about to answer he continued to say,
“I don’t even recognize you... look at you. I thought you were Sunshine.. not Midnight. And that dress, you didn’t even want it did you?”
That I answered as I shook my head no slowly, making him reply in an more audible voice now,
“I kinda figured. You always talked about having a slim mermaid dress with vail and lace, not bright white beads and diamonds on satin. Making you look like a joke.. like a Disney princess, not like the Beautiful Queen I know you are...”
Hangman was one of the few men besides my father that could push me to tears, and I knew my makeup was ruined and terrible, but I kept crying, I did indeed feel terrible and so lost. Hangman then came towards me slowly, and placed his warm hands on my bare shoulders saying,
“If you marry this man Sunshine.. then you’re not the person I thought you were. If this was something out of true love and happiness, I would stand through it with you, heck if you wanted me to bring the moon so you could have your wedding there I’d bring it. But this? This is crazy, and unacceptable. You deserve more than this-“
“Pooh bear! I’m here! You ready for first look?”
Tucker’s voice broke the wonderful moment I was having with Hangman, bringing me back to the reality about all of this. I quickly answered back while trying not to sound like I had just cried out a river,
“Yeah! Just wait a few minutes I’ll be there at the meet up spot!”
  “Ok!”
Me and Hangs waited for the door to close before I placed his hands off my shoulders and said,
“Listen, I know you mean well, but if you knew exactly why I’m doing this you’d understand. You have to let me go Hangman, a best friend would let his friend do as they please-“
“This is not as ‘you please’ you’re being forced-“
  “I’m not, I chose this-“
Hangman let me go and walked backwards while huffing,
“Because you think you ran out of choices! God Sunshine... you know what.. huhhh fine.”
I knew Hangman was beyond angry at the moment, but I couldn’t bare the thought of not having him there, so I hesitantly asked,
“Hangman... will you be there.. in the church?”
Locking eyes with me, he thought for a few seconds, until he relaxed his tense shoulders and nodded,
“Of course I will. I’ll be there. I’d never leave you to hang, you know that.”
I sent him a small smile of appreciation that he mirrored,
“thank you... now.. I-I got to go.”
“Sure.. go on- wait hold on.”
Hangman first grabbed the handkerchief from his tuxedo, and wiped my tears and tried to fix my running mascara from under my eyes, his pink tongue stuck out on the corner as he was so concentrated to make it look better than it was in general. Sighing lowing he stepped back to look,
“Perfect. Now go on, before you know-“
I knew what he meant, so I finished for him,
  “Yeah, I know.. goodbye.”
  “GoodBye..”
No one can rewrite the stars
How can you say you'll be mine?
Everything keeps us apart
And I'm not the one you were meant to find
It's not up to you, it's not up to me, yeah
When everyone tells us what we can be
And how can we rewrite the stars?
Say that the world can be ours, tonight
Hangman’s POV
About an hour later, I stood in the first aisle of benches listening to the piano play loudly, announcing that the bride was about to appear and approach her adorning moment. First, the flowers girls walked down, doing their very cute dances and swaying their baskets, as they tossed the flowers around. Then, the bridesmaids walked out, Phoenix first then everyone after her, but as the mistress of Tucker passed by, she tried to fancy me with a smile, but I subtly flipped her the bird with a frown. She never caught it because she was soon having her eyes fixated on Tucker gawking at him like if he was the best and most fine man on earth! (When it’s clearly me, I’m just saying..) but UGH! I wanted to vomit, and cry, and I ‘never’ cry. And FINALLY! Finally, when the bride, my Sunshine was to walk down the aisle, the deep piano music began to play, it sounded like the kind of music people would put if they were being put to death, not getting married! But I ignored it, as I tried to look over everyone to see Sunshine, that was beginning to walk down the aisle on her own, she wasn’t even allowed to have someone walk with he, like her father or male friend. But here she came, looking happy for and to others, when I knew deep down she was walking into the chambers of her death, and feeling so lost and sad about it. But soon as she reached the last bench she passed which was where I stood, she stopped. Like didn’t move at all, the Priest tried to call her over to come stand in front of Tucker, Tucker himself even began to move forward to grab her arm, but Sunshine pulled herself away from his reach, looked at me, and took off. Gasps and calls went after her as in mere seconds Sunshine had run out of the room, disappearing to thin air. I had began to run after her, but Tucker grabbed my arm and whipped me roughly to face him, and seethed to my face,
“You told her didn’t you! You’re the one that ruined this for her! For us?!”
Without baring a second thought I said confidently,
“Yes, I did! You cheating, son of a bitch!!”
I knew Tucker would be pissed off enough to raise a fist at me, but Rooster came behind him and held his arms as I first let myself plant a full punch to his now not-perfect-nose. It only took one to lay him out, I then fixed my sleeves and cuffs as Phoenix came to me with a panicked look,
“You have to go find her! Please!”
Rooster grabbed my shoulder supportingly as he assured,
  “We all got this, go!”
I didn’t need to be told twice, as I ran to my truck, but what I didn’t expect, was a piece of paper stuck on my windshield, that had a scribble on it, in Sunshine’s writing,
‘Jacob Thomas Seresin, if you don’t want me to be any more angry and sad than I am already, leave me alone, don’t look for me. I’m so sorry.. -Sunshine.
  Sunshine’s POV
Tears ran down my face as I ran towards the airfield that was near my house, sense we were in Fighter Town, airfields were everywhere, and one happened to be near my home. I loved to go there when I needed time to think and be on my own. People looked at me weird as I ran down the streets in a full wedding dress and tall heels, but I didn’t care, maybe I needed to be seen as a mess, so I can be left alone as sobs escaped my mouth because of my troubled and broken heart. Soon, because I didn’t know how long it took me to get there, I arrived at the open airfield, it faced the ocean and gave me a whole painting of splendor and life. I watched a few old planes take off, which was my favorite thing to see. Something so big and beautiful, flying across the skies with a freedom that could only be earned by hard work and right choices, something I needed to learn. The Fresh air, was what I was looking for, but because this day could only get worse, the clouds hovered over me, and began to cry with me, softly though, which was good, even though I know, that if it began to rain harder, I’d still stay, till my bones got soaked too. I sat on the pavement with my legs spread out in front of me, and my hands were wrapped around my torso, as I wept and hugged myself, thinking,
‘Maybe Jake is right.. I’m worth more than a convenience and a deal to get more, I’m more than a contract, I deserve true love and loyalty. But I’ve ruined it all for me now, I ran away in front of everyone, Turning what was supposed to be a beautiful moment into a mess.... all for a deal, a convenience... I didn’t love Tucker.. I love.. I love Jake. Jake is the one I wished that stood at the altar, waiting for me, the one I wish he had gone down on one knee for me, bought the dress I wanted, the ring I wanted... he would’ve done all that, because he loves me.. does he love me? At least now? After I left and told him to not follow me.. damn I am a mess.’
From the soars I felt in my legs from running so fast for so long, I grunted in pain as I stood up with my now soaked, and heavy dress, I took off my heels as best as I could, (which was a circus and a hassle to get off) but I then grabbed the engagement ring off my finger, and began to walk towards the deck, and once I reached the edge, I looked ahead, as the falling rain became one with the ocean, making a melody that sounded better than the chattering of my teeth because of the cold, or better than the sound of the beating of my heart, which was frantic, for my mind raced with thoughts, of what to do next. As much as I loved to stand here forever and just be seen and held by the trueness and beauty of nature, something calls me home. With all my might I threw the ring so far into the ocean, and stood proudly as I waited to see them go underwater, and in those few seconds, my mind decided,
  ‘I need to find Jake!’
All I want is to fly with you
All I want is to fall with you
So just give me all of you
It feels impossible (It's not impossible)
Is it impossible?
Say that it's possible
  Hangman’s POV
I sat on the porch of my house, that faced the beach which was my backyard. The rain had been poring softly earlier, but now it was falling heavily, tempting me to join it as I felt despaired. I had been there for about two hours, after I had been driving everywhere looking in every airfield in Fighter Town for Sunshine. I was still in my tuxedo as I sat there, thinking, because I knew she’d be in one of those airfields, but I never found her, which made me worried sick, she was always there, in her worst moments. And I couldn’t even call her, she left her phone, purse, keys- just everything!! I promised that if any more minutes passed I was going to get a search party in place for her, I wouldn’t go the night without her, but, at the same time, Sunshine said she didn’t want to be found, maybe she hid in place where she couldn’t be seen. I had to respect the space she asked for, but I felt like I had to find her and drag her out of that space. I called everyone asking if they had any eyes on her, but they all came back negative. With my head in my hands I tried not to cry, I loved Sunshine with all my heart, and because we were young, fresh into the Navy, didn’t really know what love was, and a lot of other things, I didn’t keep her. Instead we drove one another away thinking it was for the best, and that the future for the both of us, as lovers, didn’t cross.
‘I wish I asked you to be my wife, even if I didn’t know how to be a husband... I’d do anything to work it out till I got it right. I may be an obnoxious guy and have a big ego, but I have a bigger heart and love you Sunshine... I’m sorry I let you down, I shouldn’t of let you go, I just want to find you and hold you, kiss you and love you, tell you everything about how I really feel and really want you-‘
  “JAKE!?”
I right away shot up from my chair, thinking,
  ‘Did I hear that right-‘
 “JAKE?!”
That was Sunshine’s voice!! I recognized it immediately, she sounded like she was standing in the front, probably knocking on my door, I sprinted through the side of the house and walked to the front, and saw the runaway bride standing on the steps that led to my door. She stood in front of the door with her back towards me, she hadn’ t seen me yet, so I called out to her, as the rain began to soak me too.
  “Sunshine?!”
She let out a yelp from me calling out to her, when she had expected me to open the door, whoops! Didn’t mean to scare her more, but she turned around right away, and her shoulders slumped in relief at seeing me there, picking up the dress as best as she could she practically jumped off the steps like an Olympic runner and sprinted to where I stood. I took in her appearance once again today, and she looked.. damn like a runaway bride, but only Sunshine could pull it off and still look so beautiful. Her hair stuck to her face in everyway, her makeup was runny and smeared, her nose tip was bright pink from the cold, her lips looked a little more plump but very red and moved in sync with her chattering teeth. Her eyes searched for acceptance as she kept glancing down at herself, her dress was completely dirty and a little torn at the bottom, her shoes were in her left hand, as the other hand tried to hold the front of her dress that kept falling almost making her topless. I was completely taken aback at the moment I was in, I couldn’t even find the words to start a simple sentence, but Sunshine was the first to break the ice with a stutter to her soothing voice,
“Listen Jake.. I’m so sorry, for everything. You’re right I-I deserve more than a convenience or- or a contract... filled with infidelity and lies. I wish I had never put myself in such a d-dangerous place, b-but I thought I had no other way. I didn’t run out of choices Jake, I still had one, which was to say no.. and I did.”
I looked down at her, and I decided to say nothing, because nothing could come out. I instead, took her hand, and led her carefully up the steps, opened my door, and pushed her carefully inside. Once in the warmth and comfort of my home, I said simply, thinking about her health first,
“We need to change your clothes, you’re going to get sick. Why don’t you get in the shower, I’ll get you some clothes. They’ll be right at the door for you once you’re done.”
Sunshine’s eyes had worry hover in them, but I really was at lost for words, like, at first, I really wanted to fix everything and have her here, but now, that she was here in the flesh, I forgot how to function and be. I didn’t know what to do. So I did what was logical first, let her take a warm shower. As I walked her towards the bathroom, she said in her low voice,
“Hangs.. can we talk about this?”
I didn’t know how to talk about it yet, I had so many thoughts running through my head of what to do, that made me sure to not engage in that conversation yet. So I shook my head no, and stood by my words,
  “No, go shower please.”
 Sunshine’s POV
‘He’s probably going to let me go after I leave.. I knew I had mess this up.. for all of us... I’m so sorry Jake.’
I really wanted to push it, push the conversation I wanted to have, but I could tell he wouldn’t budge, and at this point, I wouldn’t dare step into any more problems than I already had. As I walked towards the restroom behind him, I looked around as I got there, and his house smelled like fresh linen with a tint of chestnut, so welcoming. He had his nice cowboy hats resting here and there on wooden shelves. Small frames of his wingman and aviator buddies as well, were hanging along the hallway walls, his awards also found there home there too amongst the walls. I’d love to take a whole tour in his house, it looked and felt so him, everything! Even the little plush cow that sat on a little table he had there in the corner that held a pot of hay and sunflowers sticking out, even that.. showed me that I was in Jake Seresin’s house. But very soon, I listened to his quick gestures that led me inside the restroom, and before I could do anything he asked me calmly,
“Do you need help with your dress? To take it off?”
I looked down at my heavy and soaked dress, I indeed needed help, it would be too hard to get this pumpkin of a dress off for sure, so I said yes,
“Yes please, if it’s not a bother.”
He put his warm but wet fingers on the zipper that was on my dress, I could feel his hand that grazed my back as he pulled the zipper down. His loving and delicate touch brought chills to my skin, as I craved it more, wishing his hands lingered and held every part of me. His other hand had held the dress at my hip in place so the entire dress wouldn’t drop once it got loose. Making me go warm inside to think of how considerate and steps ahead he was, never missing one.
  ‘Such a gentleman... so sweet.’
Once he was done, he let me go, almost forcing a whimper to leave my lips at the loss of his touch, but I then heard him say,
“Go ahead and use what’s there, whatever you need.. I’ll be in my room if you need me.”
He didn’t spare me another look or a share of words, as he walked out and closed the door carefully. I stood in front of the large mirror he had in the restroom, and dropped my dress to the floor, exposing the real me, simple and small. I took off the rest of my clothes and soon stood under the warm water that ran over my freezing skin, wishing that it was Jakes embrace I drowned in, as his warmth engulfed me. I used his shampoo that was there, it smelled masculine, but at the same time, it had a hint of hazelnut and vanilla? No wonder he always smelled so heavenly and tough at once, especially with the musky scent he held and gained naturally, especially after a long day in the field or air. God I didn’t realize how much I had missed and remembered every bit of him, until I stood in his own home, under these circumstances. My heart pumped wildly, trying to stay alive at the thought of him probably kicking me out, because I am a total loss and mess. I wouldn’t blame him, if I could, I’d leave this body too and never see it again, but it’s my heart and mind that have the problems, not my body of course, but you know what I mean right? I washed myself and scrubbed hard from head to toe, taking every inch of the day off of me, wanting it to be over.. after I talked to Jake, that is, if he wanted to..
‘Does he want to talk to me? Is he? What’s going through his mind? What’s he going or do? Oh God please tell me!’
When I had finished showering, and had started drying myself, I couldn’t help but be more nervous and scared. I knew an end was coming, but didn’t know what kind of end, which made it all more scarier. I opened the door slowly while wrapped in a towel, and just as Jake had said, he left a change of clothes right outside the door in a little woven basket, that had a lotion and moisturizer cream.  I took the basket in, and got changed into the boxers and jumpsuit after I put on the lotion and cream he had left in there. It all smelled like him, and felt so soft against my skin. I finally stepped out of the restroom, and walked into the darkness the house held, no lights were on, not even the one that was behind Jakes door, which made me think,
‘He probably went to sleep... maybe I should go home, he wouldn’t want me here anyways.. right?’
Jakes callsign was ‘Hangman’, and he was given that callsign for a reason, a reason that made a a lot of people not like him, Hangman always left people hanging. But, if Hangman left me to hang this time, I wouldn’t be mad or upset, I made him go to that point because of me. I began to take slow and quiet steps down the hallway, while Looking down at my feet, wanting to reach the living room, to go through the front door, and leave. Tears began to run down my face, as I got closer and closer to the end of the hallway, I didn’t want to leave, but I thought it was for the best. But when I reached the end, a flickering light that was in the living room caught my attention, making me look up, to find the unexpected waiting for me.
  Hangman’s POV
And how do we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
And nothing can keep us apart
'Cause you are the one I was meant to find
It's up to you, and it's up to me
No one could say what we get to be
And why don't we rewrite the stars?
Changing the world to be ours
  ‘There she is... my wife.’
While Sunshine showered, I had made up my mind, this wasn’t a time to be doubtful and not sure about what I knew was the right thing to do. If she came back there’s a reason why, a good reason why. Because at the end of the day, she still could’ve been in that crazy white dress, dry and not soaked in rain, probably already a Mrs.Tucker, dancing and partying, but instead, she’s standing at the end of my hall, with round, teary eyes, hugging my jumpsuit close to her body as she held her frame with the hands that didn’t hold a ring on them. I right away, let her take in the room she was beginning to slowly walk into. I had moved the couches out of the way, to have an open space, I laid out a white comforter on the floor, as I plucked out some of my pots sunflowers petals, and laid them all over the floor. (There were a bunch of petals everywhere!) and I also lit the only candle I had in my house, which was a small flickering light, but it still shined pretty brightly. (Shoutout to Bob for making me buy that one for some reason.) anyways, I had also put up one of the stands for my cowboys hats, and made it look like the altar, with my plush cow sitting on it, playing my priest for the night. I had taken off my soaked tuxedo, and changed into a simple jumpsuit that matched the one I had given Sunshine. Now, I held in my hand, a promise ring I had bought for Sunshine, when I had first thought she’d be my forever, when we broke it off, I still kept it, always hoping to have this chance again, like I did today. Sunshine walked towards the center of the comforter, as her feet touched the petals that laid around her, she looked up to me, still looking beautiful, but now, she looked like herself, the Sunshine I had always known and fallen in love with. So then, I made the move.. I got on my knee, in front of her, and held up, the diamond, sunflower shaped ring in my hand, asking, well, probably sounded more like I begged or pleaded,
“Sweet heart, Sunshine, putting aside our pasts and mistakes, I want to start fresh and again. And I want to do that with you. You were made for me, I know you were, and I know you know it too. I want you to know that I promise, to love you, cherish you, and give you the best version of me possible. I have been many things, but I’ve only been sure of one, which is to be your husband. So please, will you make me the happiest, and most satisfied man on earth, and marry me? Be my Mrs. Seresin... please?”
God knows how many times my mind went through many other words to say, and yet, everything I just said was new off my tongue and never thought of. But Sunshine covered her mouth with her hands as she let out a loud sob and began to jump crying,
“Yes!! Yes! I say yes a million times!!”
I let out a loud sigh of relief and a short laugh, as I placed the ring on her finger, and caught her in my arms when she jumped into them. We collapsed on the ground, and laughed with one another, as I peppered kisses all over her face and lips thanking her happily in between,
  “Thank. you. honey. my. sunflower...”
Sunshine smiled at me, and placed a long, warm kiss to my lips, while holding me so close. I deepened the kiss while tilting my head to the side, which earned me entrance into her lovely mouth. I held her tight as I stood up and carried her with my hands under her things, listening to her say,
“Thank you.. for giving us another chance.. and a wonderful, new journey.”
I kissed her lips once more, as I promised,
“My callsign may be Hangman, but I’ll never leave you hanging... you hang with me, wherever I go.”
Sunshine kissed my nose as she promised,
“Wherever you go, I’ll be your sunshine forever. My sunflower.”
Wrapping her arms around my neck she hugged me tightly, and whispered into my ear,
“I love you so much Mr.Seresin... I always have.”
I kissed her head as I whispered back, squeezing her thighs to emphasize my words,
“I love you more Mrs.Seresin... I will always. Because you deserve the best.”
“I do.. I deserve a man that really loves me.. like you.”
I sent her my best smile that was only reserved to her, as I said,
“I promise, I’ll give you the wedding you want.. everything you want you’ll have, ok?”
She let out a sweet chuckle that made my heart swoon, but she reassured me lovingly,
“All I want, is you... everything else.. is nothing without you.”

  You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
But I’ll have you
We're bound to be and our hands are tied together

Jake “Hangman” Seresin drabble #1
Prompt- “Walk then. Come on, walk towards me. I bet you can’t even take a step.”
Tumblr media
You were in trouble. Deep, deep trouble. It had started that morning when you tripped while getting dressed. There had been a sharp crack followed by a numb sensation in your right ankle. You had rolled up onto your feet and kept going without thinking. Then the pain had hit. Hard.
You were sitting on a bench in the locker room when Hangman burst in. “Let me see it.”
“See what?” You jerked up straight from where you had been untying your boot.
     “I saw you limping.”
     “Football injury.”
“Yeah, right,” Hangman scoffed and crossed his arms. “Walk then. Come on, walk towards me. I bet you can’t even take a step.”
Anger coursed through you. “Fine, idiot.”
You stood up and took a step towards them. “See, I’m perfectly-,” you cut yourself off with a cry of pain.
“Woah, easy,” Hangman caught you before you fell. “See?” He smirked. “Told you.”
“If it didn’t hurt so bad I’d punch you.” You hissed, even as you gripped his shoulder for support.
Hangman chuckled as he swept you up into his arms bridal style. “Come on, baby girl,” he pressed a kiss to the side of your face. “Let’s get you to the medics.”
