Happy 30th anniversary to The Halloween Tree TV movie!
If you've never seen Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree it is really underrated.
The Halloween Tree was a novel written by Ray Bradbury in 1972 after he was disappointed by It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. He said, and I quote "The Great Pumpkin never showed up."
He originally planned for The Halloween Tree to be an animated Halloween special by animation icon, Chuck Jones, but the plans fell apart so Ray Bradbury published it as a novel instead.
Twenty-one-years-later in 1993 Ray Bradbury finally got his TV special as an animated movie from Hanna-Barbara / Turner / and Warner Brothers. It aired on TBS and for a few years after it was reshown on Cartoon Network.
In the 1990s you could buy The Halloween Tree on VHS tape and it came with a small, cheaply made, copy of the original novel. The video tape also included a Yogi Bear short about Yogi stealing a witch's broom to steal picnic baskets.
The plot of The Halloween Tree was this:
A group of teenagers plan on going trick or treating with their friend Joe Pipkin (Nicknamed Pip). When they arrive at Pip's house they see an ambulance and a note that indicates Pipkin's appendix has ruptured. At first the kids are very worried about their friend but then they think they see him running through the trees and think he has pulled some elaborate prank on them. They give chase and follow him to a spooky old house with a strange tree in the yard. The tree is full of thousands upon thousands of Jack-o-lanterns. Each jack-o-lantern represents someone who has died within the year. Here the children meet a mysterious man named Moundshroud (implied to actually be The Grim Reaper). The children spot their friend hiding and are startled to realize he's a ghost. Before they can adjust to this strange ripple in reality, their ghostly friend climbs up the Halloween Tree and steals the jack-o-lantern representing his own life. A strange wind comes and carries away their friend so the kids give chase. With the aid of Moundshroud the children travel through time and all over the world to find their friend. First they go to Ancient Egypt, then medieval UK, then France in the eleven hundreds, and mid-twentieth century Mexico. The children learn the history of Halloween and figure out who Moundshroud actually is.
The children each offer up a year from the end of their lives if their friend can live a full life with them. Moved by their loving offer to try to save their friend, Moundshroud accepts the offer (though this may be how he always intended for it to turn out). The children hurry back to Pip's house and find him there, tired, but alive and recovering from his appendix surgery. It's a very sweet story and it's narrated by Ray Bradbury, himself. Leonard Nemoy provided the voice of Moundshroud. Since the animated version was released on American cable thirty-years-ago and it was not theatrically released, a lot of people outside the US and younger people have never seen it. It is currently available for rent or purchase on Apple TV, Amazon, and Youtube. And you can buy it on DVD through Amazon.
For a made for TV animated movie it is surprisingly high quality. It won an Emmy. Ray Bradbury, himself, provided narration. I'm not really sure why it is not aired on TV anymore other than perhaps someone was worried that the cultural depictions might be seen as inaccurate and potentially insensitive. But I watched it pretty recently and it still seems pretty respectful. I love The Halloween Tree almost as much as I love Over the Garden Wall. Many people consider Over the Garden Wall to be a Halloween special too but in actuality it originally aired in November and was meant to bridge between Halloween and Christmas since it was inspired by early twentieth century Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving, and Christmas postcards. But both The Halloween Tree and Over the Garden Wall are very underrated. Here is the opening scene of The Halloween Tree. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be8vfy2pOcY

Everything Announced at the Annecy Cartoon Network, Max, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe Panel
Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe had a panel at the Annecy Festival today. These panels aren't available to the public, but according to people who were there, we can see what was announced. There's a lot of news to cover here.
A new series based on Beast Boy on his own, fittingly titled Beast Boy: Lone Wolf.
Batman: Caped Crusader, the new Batman series that is now coming to Amazon instead of Max, had a sneak peek.
Along with that, other DC-related shows that were brought up in some way include My Adventures With Superman, Creature Commandos, the film Merry Little Batman, a spinoff series of Merry Little Batman called Batfamily, a new season of Harley Quinn, and a spinoff of Harley Quinn called Kite Man: Hell Yeah! (source)
The Daffy and Porky movie is still happening, and has been renamed Bubble Brains.
Something was teased that involved Taz in stop motion.
The Amazing World of Gumball was said to be getting a new series after the movie, but they changed their mind and made it just Season 7 of the original show. They did not mention anything about the movie.
Tiny Toons Looniversity's opening was shown.
Turns out, watching a show will make it continue whether you like it or not, because they mentioned that Velma is getting a Season 2.
The Fionna and Cake spinoff's opening was shown. This will be on Max, and will be targeted to adults. Max did release an adult animation sizzle reel that has a split second of this show today along with Velma and a new series based on the short Hair Love called Young Love, which can be seen here.
The preschool spinoff of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends has been picked up and given the name Foster's Imaginary Nursery. An image of a CGI Bloo was shown off. (source)
One person said Jessica's Big Little World, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe, and Invincible Fight Girl were at least brought up, but I couldn't find it in any other source. (source)
Conspicuously absent during this panel are anything involving the Gumball movie, anything else involving certain Craig McCracken projects, the fate of Bye Bye Bunny, and what they're going to do with the upcoming Cartoon Cartoons shorts.

Some headcannons off the top of my head
Picture Snorky from The Banana Splits realising his hidden dream of playing theater organ in concert, even if it sometimes means relying on his trunk to get at the higher ranks of the keyboard.
Autocat, ever frustrated at attempting to catch Motormouse, seeking to drown his sorrows in rather awful-tasting coffee from as seedy an all-night cafe as it can get. And the coffee in question isn't even spiked with chicory or dandelion root, common coffee additives in certain quarters.
So much for Ritz crackers, Vimto or Stoned Wheat Thins: Breezly Bruin contributes some of that Alaskan staple, Sailor Boy Pilot Bread, to many a cheese-and-cracker party ... and many a Hanna-Barbera Funtastic actually wonders how pilot bread manages to taste, to begin with, especially with some sharp Cheddar and summer sausage of Wisconsin origin.
Those Skatebirds actually managing to have fried chicken tenders, and eat them sans silverware. Especially dunked in dipping sauce such as sweet and sour, marinara, barbecue, ranch--or even Daddie's Sauce from England.
And speaking of Daddie's Sauce (which, aside from Amazon or such online stores specialist in British groceries for the homesick, can sometimes be found at retail here in America), you have to wonder if Doggie Daddy is an unlikely fan of that classic from Blighty replete with malt vinegar, tamarind, raisins, dates and spices ... and whether such rubs off on that ever-doting son of his, Augie Doggie.
Could it be that Mr. Peebles (as in Peebles' Pet Shop, home to that simian albatross of a pet known as Magilla Gorilla) may actually be from Peebles, Ohio, which was famous in its day for an annual tent Chautaqua? (Which, technically, to the Scots way of thinking, would render his last name "Peebles of that Ilk.")
When it comes to that romantic pull between Captain Caveman and Taffy, what was perchance the most satisfying example of lovemaking between the two in the most unlikely of scenarios?
