I followed a similar concept—the two photographs, then and now—but this time, I wanted to explore how becoming Conan was good for Shinichi—as a result, he’s gained so many people who care about him.

Of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for some angst as well :)

It's a little frustrating I didn't have time to prepare anything special, but I still wanted to pop by for this special day.

I have so much to say, but yet I’m at a loss for words at the same time. Meeting Masumi genuinely changed the trajectory of my life. Just a little over 3 years ago, I posted my first A3! translation--a Masumi story--and so many things have changed both in me and my life since then. But I want to thank Masumi (and A3!) for pushing me and motivating me to keep studying and improving my Japanese at a time when I was about to give up

I have certainly come a long way from when I first started, yet I still have so much more to learn and improve. But thank you, Masumi, for being with me for every step of that journey. The road is still long, but I hope you will still stay beside me through it all

I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I hope to continue loving and supporting this special little guy as much as I can 🙏💜

2023 Year In Review: Quick Hits

It has been...a year. I struggled a lot this year, lots going on in my real life and ending on a mixed bag, but there was a lot that kept me lifted and plenty of it was in and around QL. I legit don't have the energy for a long and intense write up, so some quick hits.

1. The People

So many of y'all, you know who you are, but I want to call out the loyal pod listeners, the whole clown squad (no tags, Fight Club rules) and extra-specially @the-conversation-pod team @ginnymoonbeam @lurkingshan and especially @bengiyo. You don't even know friend, but there's days you legit kept me going.

2. The Shows

There's so much I genuinely enjoyed this year, across the spectrum, and you'll get to hear more on that when we publish this year's VIIB Awards and Year In Review eps around the last week in January, but my personal top 5 this year in no specific order:

This year more than ever, I found myself gravitating toward shows centred around ideas of compassion, acceptance, bittersweetness and 'a soft epilogue'. I'm well out of the first flush of youth, and while it can be heartwarming to watch the younguns experience it all for the first time, lived experience makes romance DIFFERENT. There's something about having tried and failed and finding it in you to try again that just hits. Something about knowing yourself and feeling something you thought might be dead in you come alive again. Last love for me, every time.

Lover or friend? is a central motif of this series. It is how juggling friendships and romantic relationships is the central struggle for most of the characters including Taichi balancing his rekindled friendship with Touma and his new romantic relationship with Futaba. It is Masumi and Touma choosing to maintain their friendships instead of confessing to their best friends. Finally there is also whether Touma is a friend or lover for Taichi which happens offscreen.

Fish Guts is a fictional horror/romance franchise in the series and a recurring motif in which the protagonist must choose between saving his friend or his lover. It's the movie the gang watch in the early chapters, features in the nightmare Taichi has after Touma is outed at school, and in the final chapter. This story within a story parallels how many of the characters feel pressured to chose between romantic relationships and friendships and Taichi in particular as he feels caught between his relationships.

In addition to the main characters, Mami adds additional perspective as she's faced a world that has undervalued and strained her friendships with boys simply for being a girl, or how her friendship with a guy has been seen as a threat to both her romantic relationships as well as those of her friends. Throughout Ao no Flag discussions of the various relationships in a highschooler's life is the constant undercurrent of how gender impacts these relationships.

"one of the core aspects of the story for me was platonic vs. romantic love and how a lot of characters outside the main trio would push the idea of romantic love being more important than platonic love on taichi and how he felt he had to choose to either keep his best friend or his crush. it felt kinda contradictory for the story to go “lmao well you see the solution is to just marry your best friend” lol. when put under the context of what you saw as the main theme though (as in make decisions that will make you happy in the moment) the ending makes a lot more sense." But it's not just about what made them happy though that is maybe 70% of it. I speculate that Touma and Taichi were only able to enter a romance because Taichi was able to reconcile having both a friendship with Touma and a romantic relationship with Futaba. It's another aspect that Futaba helped him realize, that Taichi didn't have to give up Touma's friendship for any external factor, not for her, not because of Touma's crush, and not because of what anyone else's opinion about them was.

That Taichi and Touma's friendship comes first is a central part of the series. After Touma is outed, Taichi worries what was it that Touma wished for him in the charm he made for Taichi's birthday, he wonders if the happiness that Touma wanted was romantic love. But that wasn't Touma's priority, Touma had a crush on Taichi but more important than that to him was their friendship. Though not the entirety of what Touma wanted (he moved out so that he could live authentically to himself), the happiness of his friends elevated his own happiness (best friend power!). Touma's wish for Taichi's happiness through the power of their friendship is also a callback to Taichi saying the same thing to Touma to support him while he was still in the hospital. So it was only because their friendship came first that anything else could come after.
