Album Number Four Hundred Eighty Two. “Head Games” is the third studio album by Foreigner, released on 10 Sept 1979 by Atlantic Records. It was the only #foreignerband album co-produced by #roythomasbaker best known for working on Queen's classic albums. It marked the first appearance of new bass guitarist #rickwills (formerly of Jokers Wild and #smallfaces ) who replaced #edgagliardi (who was fired from the band), and was the last album with founding members #ianmcdonald and #algreenwood , who would leave the band after the recording. #headgames is also the last Foreigner album to feature a lead vocal by guitarist #mickjones ("The Modern Day"). My copy is on #atlanticrecords - SD 29999. The model in the photograph on the front cover is American actress and film producer #lisannefalk . The cover art was criticized by feminists for showing a teenage girl looking afraid in a boys' restroom. But according to Foreigner lead singer #lougramm , the cover was intended to be cute, like a cartoon. Gramm said "The girl is being naughty, erasing graffiti [in the restroom]. She's looking at whoever buys the album, she's been caught." According to Miami Herald critic Bill Ashton, the cover art is a play on the album title Head Games. Atlantic Records publicity director Stuart Ginsburg pointed out that "head is a naval term for bathroom" and Foreigner's media coordinator Susan Steinberg stated that "the girl on the cover is shocked by the graffiti. The wilderness program I went to was built on a system called “phases”. You had to progress through each of the six phases before you were let out of the program (this wasn’t strictly true, but I’ll get back to that). Each phase was associated with a virtue selected backronymically to spell out the name of the program (Trust, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Leadership, Service) and one of the six steps of the hero’s journey (I don't think the hero's journey is usually divided into six steps but that's how they taught it). The purpose of the program, they told us, was to guide you through your own hero’s journey.

I’m sure I have some Joseph Campbell haters in my audience. None of you will ever have as deep a loathing for that man’s legacy as I do.

At each phase, you were given a plastic-ring-bound booklet called a phasebook, which contained reading materials on the virtue and on the step of the hero’s journey, as well as some wilderness-related skill (firemaking, knot-tying, etc). In order to “phase up”, you had to demonstrate proficiency in the wilderness skill and write essays explaining how you have learned the virtue (there’s an assumed baseline that you lacked the virtue to begin with, and you just had to go along with it) and how you have progressed through that step of the hero’s journey.

Now, a fact about me is that I am morally, constitutionally incapable of writing bullshit essays. If I am to put my name on a piece of writing, it has to be something I can get behind. This has caused a great deal of strife between me, my parents, and my teachers, and has caused me to fail more than one class. I have turned in repudiations of the lessons I was supposed to be echoing, most of which took quite a bit of additional research. I have turned in essays that were nothing but sendups of the idea that one could write a good essay with the prompt given (all of these were golden, and also lost to time). I have, under the duress of my parents, written essays I did not endorse, only to secretly not turn them in. At wilderness, I was willing to learn the physical skills they asked of me, but I would not let them control my pen.

They phased me up anyway, probably because it’d look bad to my parents if I wasn’t making any progress. The way it was supposed to work was you got the day-staff (the ones who were with us all the time [we actually just called them “staff”, even though we did interact with other employees of the program, we never referred to the psychologists or the van drivers as “staff”]) to sign off on your wilderness skill proficiency, you got your psychologist (whom you saw weekly) to sign off on your essays, and then you formally requested your psychologist to be phased up, and you’d get phased up a week later (or you wouldn’t if they deemed that you still lacked the virtue, but I only ever saw that happen once. I also once witnessed a kid get phased DOWN because he did something that showed that he had not truly learned integrity, and he had to do the things all over again).

I never even requested, they’d just phase me up every couple weeks.

That said, I only ever got to phase four. Remember when I said

Well, there was a rumor among the kids at the program that they never keep anyone for more than 120 days. I have no idea where they got that idea; all the staff (both day and psychologists) denied this, and none of the kids I met had met anyone but me who didn’t finish phase six before day 100. Nevertheless, on my 117th day at the program, I was graduated, despite being only phase four. Given that the graduation ceremony was held weekly, I think this constitutes pretty solid confirmation of the rumor.

I won. I outwaited them. I had to be in that program for four months instead of the usual two to three, but at least I didn’t have to write those fucking essays.

Original I wasn’t planning to continue this. I like a good amount of personality variety in IFs, which I noticed wasn’t what you planned for the game, so I let the story go. It wasn’t for me and I hadn’t planned to try it out again.

But idk what type of Voodoo you put into the Night Market, but for some odd reason, it was like your story wouldn’t stop calling to me. I have literally been thinking about this game for months. Like no joke. Last week I decided to try the demo one more time, I still felt unsure but I woke up this morning and had the urge to buy it.

I’m glad I did. I love this so freaking much!! I cried on two occasions, smiled on others, got angry at few more but- I enjoyed every bit of it💕

It does me such creative good to hear things like this. I know my IF is not like the more popular IF's out there. And at first, I didn't think that mattered because I was ambitious and I had a story to tell. But, it's apparently kind of a turn off for a lot of people and that's been weighing on me. Because as an author, I think you always get into your own head. Should I be doing something different? Should I change? It's a tough field to navigate. So, to have examples like this? It's so encouraging.

I want to tell a story that sticks with people. I know I may not have stats and the character variation that some others IF's have. But I just wanted to tell a story in the end. And I wanted to tell a story in a way that allowed a lot of people to feel like they were a part of it.
