Something about the whole "Eming is born of Hua Cheng's desire to live and Rouye is born of Xie Lian's desire to die," and then how Xie Lian wears funeral colours and Hua Cheng wears wedding colours. God oriented towards death and stillness and self-denial. Ghost oriented towards life and hope and happiness.

Xie Lian saying he's bad at fighting as a martial god and then saying no actually he's just bad at what comes after. Like bro, what comes after for you seems to be TRAUMA.

has anyone else noticed mxtx's inexplicable fondness for characters that were once talented and powerful prodigies but due to unforseen circumstances are now far weaker than they once were or could've been
(e.g. wei wuxian, shen jui, xie lian)

Imagine Xie Lian sees how atrocious Hua Cheng's handwriting and, while he loves his husband's writing, it's so hard to read. So he offers to teach Hua Cheng. However, Hua Cheng thinks he's talking about "teaching", not like- actual teaching. ***COUGH COUGH VOLUME FOUR COVER COUGH COUGH***
Imagine just how disappointed he is when he finds out how strict of a teacher Xie Lian is. He tries to flirt with him only to be hit with writing those vows 15 times followed by a "-And do mind your calligraphy dear"

((Heaven official's blessing spoilers))
Jun Wu sword scene:
Everyone, mad at xie lian, thinking he a hoe: we think You're the Father! (Angry)
Jun Wu, in his 'I help xie lian cause I Stan him 4ever' persona alter ego:
"Don't worry guys, I have something that will totally clear this all up!"
*grabs random sword from his collection of a fuckton of swords*
"OK. Shit, what does this sword do again? Oh yeah. It's got a nifty little spell that keeps it clean and free of blood stains, wait I mean- OH LOOK, I HAVE A VIRGIN DETECTING SWORD RIGHT HERE, IT WILL GLOW AND REMAIN SPOTLESS AND CLEAR OF BLOOD FROM A VIRGIN, HAHA, A TOTALLY PERFECT THING TO HAVE FOR THIS SITUATION - no I will not test its abilities on anyone else to prove this claim, you will all believe me on this shit even though I will provide no further explanations, even though none of you have heard about a sword with this power, and -hopefully- will never hear about it again, thank you and shut up "
*sword glows and tidies up xie lians blood, as it is a self cleaning glowing sword*
Hey hey, look at that, xie lian is innocent, he's not the father, yippee! *yeets sword back into the depths of his sword collection*

tw for suicide mentions + spoilers for TGCF's novels, mainly 6.
thinking about how mu qing and feng xin have NO clue that xie lian tried to kill himself and it had me thinking about what IF they eventually found out. probably after the novels have officially ended and they're all together as friends again.
XL still wears his bandages around his throat even though he doesn't have his cursed shackle anymore and they find it a bit odd. they ask once or twice and he's quick to change the subject so they don't push any further. this goes on for MONTHS until they go out on an adventure / mission together.
the xianle trio were off to solve some sort of mystery and XL gets in a fight. it results in the trio's win, of course, but the bandage around XL's throat comes undone. the white cloth unravels in front of their eyes and what they see immediately is setting alarms off in their head. a dark purple bruise is embedded into his skin and the trio immediately are jumping to conclusion, assuming hua cheng had done something.
XL is quick to deny those accusations while still trying to avoid the subject entirely, but it doesn't work well. eventually, he breaks.
"Ah- it's nothing to worry about, really! After mother and father died I foolishly tried to join them in the afterlife. It's stupid, I know- gods can't die, after all. Haha! It's nothing to worry about, though."
and the thick silence that ensues is SUFFOCATING for XL. he's concerned he'll be judged and perhaps lose his two friends once again. that doesn't happen, however, and instead there's this look of guilt on their expression that cannot be matched by anyone else. it was clear that they were blaming themselves for leaving XL even though it obviously wasn't their fault.
and then they go home and have tea together and cuddle and everything is fine. (it isn't.)

I finished volume 8 of Heaven Official's Blessing, and all this time I thought the fandom just collectively decided Hua Cheng and Xie Lian referred to each other as husbands and made up how all the characters know they're together. I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS GOING TO BE CANON! NOBODY PREPARED ME FOR THEM CANONICALLY REFERRING TO EACH OTHER AS "HUSBAND" AND VERY OBVIOUSLY ALLUDING TO THE FACT THAT THEY FUCK ALL THE TIME!!!! WE'VE BEEN TRULY BLESSED 😭😍

Gosh the way Hua Cheng treats Xie Lian is so lovely. Xie Lian is so used to being shamed and mocked and whispered about (directly) behind his back. The contrast where in Heaven all those officials were following right behind him gossiping and mocking. And then he goes to Ghost City, and the feared and respected king of the city calls him up publicly and gives him time and attention and respect. And the ghosts follow suit, because they adore their king, and anyone he calls "gege" must be worthy of their admiration too. Hua Cheng not only offers Xie Lian his own affection; he gives him a city's worth. Suddenly Xie Lian has a place where he's loved because Hua Cheng loves him, and it's such a warm and ridiculous and chaotic place, all rough edges and blood and laughter. The perfect place for a scrap god to call home.
(Also interesting how Jun Wu boots everyone out and then does his skeezy little affectionate gaslighting thing, while Hua Cheng guarantees all eyes are on him and then basically declares "this is my friend, he is to be treated well.")

Me, (waiting on Heaven Official's Blessing translations, finished up to Book 6): Why do all the fan creators paint Jun Wu as such a bastard? I guess you could read some lowkey abusive vibes into that relationship if you squint. Maybe it's a translation thing?
Me, now, having just finished Book 7: Ohh, yeah. That'll do it.
