Hello, folks! Today is National Pi Day. “Pi” is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which always comes out to 3.14 That having been said, since we’re a Coast Artillery page, we thought of something nifty for you – here are the circumferences of the calibers of Coast Artillery guns used from the 1890’s through World War 2. These are the physical diameters of the bore of the gun, and also the width of the shell. For our new followers, yes – we really had guns protecting our coasts that fired projectiles more than a foot wide, and which weighed more than one ton! Even better, we were using them over 125 years ago, and they were fired with pinpoint accuracy, without calculators, computers, or radar. For your reference, we have added photos of an example of each caliber, as well, with the caliber on top, and the circumference on the bottom. I've been so excited for this book, and now it's here, just in time for Thanksgiving! At last, a story of Thanksgiving written by a member of the Wampanoag people, telling real history in a way that is accessible to little ones. This book tells the often-fictionalized tale from a Native perspective, creating the character of Weeâchumun (corn) to tell the story, along with Nokomis (grandmother), who unfolds the events to her grandchildren. It shows the generosity and caring of the Wampanoag people, and the mixed feelings of welcoming and wariness they felt for the people who needed help, but did not listen to the land. It tells the accurate account of the "first Thanksgiving," where settlers prepared a feast and fired muskets into the air, which alerted the Wampanoag (they didn't invite them to the feast). It notes how for settlers, the day is called Thanksgiving, but for many native people, it is a day of mourning. Yet this book is not somber, but thoughtful, a prelude to learning more (the back matter is particularly helpful). Thank You, Dr Salk: The Scientist Who Beat Polio and Healed the World by Dean Robbins, illustrated by Mike Dutton, is a really lovely picture book biography of Dr. Jonas Salk, the doctor at the head of the team responsible for creating the vaccine for polio. It is a fascinating piece of history that is more relevant than ever, and this book displays that for maximum effect. It also stresses Salk's Jewish roots and explains the ethics of tikkun olam (translated here as "healing the world") as being a driving force for Salk. It is definitely an enjoyable and important book for kids to read today, and Jewish kids may find it even more significant. Op de Utrechtse Heuvelrug liggen de Kaapse bossen. De naam van deze omgeving komt van Henrik Swellengebel die in 1750 het gebied kocht van het fortuin dat hij had vergaard in Kaapstad, waar hij gouverneur van de Kaapkolonie was geweest. Het gebied is ontstaan in de voorlaatste ijstijd (het Saalien) toen gletsjers zorgden voor landverhogingen. Hierdoor is de Utrechtse Heuvelrug 150.000 jaar geleden ontstaan. Al vroeg ontstond toerisme in het gebied. Zo is begin 20e eeuw een van de zwerfkeien uit het gebied op een sokkel geplaatst en trokken mensen naar de steen om de uitdaging aan te gaan deze op te tillen. Deze steen is nu vast bevestigd op de sokkel. De uitkijktoren “De Kaap” staat midden in het gebied en geeft vanaf 26,5 meter een prachtig uitzicht over de omgeving. —————— On the hills of the ‘Utrechtse Heuvelrug’ you can find thee ‘Kaapse bossen’. The name of the area derives from Henrik Swellengebel who returned from the Cape colony (nowadays Capetown), where he had been gouvernor. He bought the forests and build an estate. The area was created during the Ice Age of the Saalien time. 150.000 years ago the area was levitated due to large approaching ice masses. The area has been a touristic destination since the end of the 19th century. Early in the 20th century a boulder was placed challenging men to lift it. As it was Armistice Day yesterday, I thought I would take my daughter Yhana on a walk of little Waltham to explore a few of the 20 pillboxes built there during World War II as a defence against an invasion. The Defence of the River Chelmer (a natural moat protecting London) It gave Yhana a little insight into what the day / World War I & II was actually about. Yhana filmed most of this video and did an incredible job. We had a little fun too, at the beginning of the film. I love to learn new things, and when those new things involve strong, brave women, so much the better! Many people are familiar with the fact that Golda Meir was the fourth Prime Minister of the State of Israel, and only the THIRD woman ever to be elected a modern head of state. What they may not know, though, was that this amazing woman actually grew up in Europe and the United States, and was a budding young social activist long before she was a stateswoman!! "Goldie Takes A Stand! Golda Meir's First Crusade" (2014) by Barbara Krasner, illustrated by Kelsey Garrity-Riley, tells the story of how as a schoolgirl in Milwaukee, young Goldie organised her friends and classmates, mostly fellow immigrants, to help buy textbooks for other immigrant kids who couldn't afford them, in order to help them gain a headstart on a better life. A wonderfully positive tale of community, this is exactly what I think of when I think of this month's RwR Book Club theme of bold women and girls. Camels🐪 might look unusual in a place like the African Coast, but they're actually quite common. Arab traders used the monsoon winds since times immemorial, to come and go from Arabia and India to the East Coast of Africa to trade in resources, ivory, spices and also slaves. And they brought the Camels. There are strings of old Swahili towns all along the coast, with Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam in todays Tanzania🇹🇿 probably being the most well-known and Malindi further north here in Kenya🇰🇪 a quite famous one as well. Malindi is also the place, where Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer stopped and repaired his ships, on his way to finding a passage to India. Our Children Can Soar by Michelle Cook I read this book just in time for MLK day and I'm so glad, I can't wait to show it to the kids! This beautiful poem-picture-book highlights groundbreaking heroes of Black history in America, depicting how the barrier-breaking achievements of each paved the way for many more after them to overcome prejudice and persevere. Starting with the courage of Black ancestors during enslavement and the Civil War, the book leads us through a succession of heroes, including George Washington Carver. Jesse Owens, Hattie McDaniel, Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Dr. Martín Luther King Jr, Thurgood Marshall, and Barack Obama, and culminates in a picture of the children of today, lifted on the hands of their forebears into a bright sky. Speaking of, I can't say enough about these breathtaking illustrations! Tahra was in love with #Hamilton when she was 5, even though we didn't have a chance to see the show. We based all of our early #Americanhistory on that interest. Visited historic sites and battle locations in NYC, put flowers on his and Eliza's tombstones, went to Philadelphia and visited the locations of the writing of the constitution and read every book we could find. Yet, we had never seen the show. Now, Disney ( which we would have never subscribed to) is showing Hamilton, the brilliant (in so many ways) #Broadway show. We would have loved to have seen it live, but this was still very exciting. D27 is het grootste hunebed dat in Nederland gevonden is. Het hunebed staat in Borger in de provincie Drenthe, net als 52 van de 54 andere Nederlandse hunebedden. Hunebedden waren begraafplaatsen uit de steentijd. De meeste hunebedden zijn ongeveer 5000 jaar oud. De naam hunebedden komt van de Drentse naam voor reus; huyne. In vroeger tijden dacht men dat het overblijfselen waren van reuzen die geleefd hadden. —————— In The Dutch province of Drenthe you can find ‘hunebedden’. These stone structures are burial sites dating 5000 years ago. D27 is the largest that remains and can be found in Borger. The name ‘hunebed’ derives from a local dialect in which a huyne is a giant.
