Posted @withregram • @raisingwildflowerkids Parents today are knocking it out of the park. We’re spending two or three times as much time with our kids as parents did 50 years ago. We’re educating ourselves about parenting. We’re paying attention to emotional needs and mental health. (We are still works in progress, but we know that too.) In light of this, why do so many parents feel like failures? I believe it comes from being sold a host of unrealistic expectations for our children and for ourselves as parents. We think our kids have to be unicorn sleepers and early readers or we’ve failed them. We think we need the perfect Montessori home, the most enriching educational activities, and a 100% track record of focused listening, patient problem solving, and immediate responsiveness or we aren’t doing our jobs. It’s a fact that a warm and responsive parenting style is beneficial for kids, but expecting perfection from ourselves can backfire. As Bruno Bettelheim noted in 1987, “Perfection is not within the grasp of ordinary human beings. Efforts to attain it typically interfere with that lenient response to the imperfections of others, including those of one’s child, which alone make good human relations possible.” (Bettelheim had some problems but he was right about this.) Growing up with a perfectly programmed robot is not what kids need. They need to learn that everyone makes mistakes and how to handle it when you do. If there are particular situations that consistently cause us to lose it, we need to engage in some reflection. Perhaps we need to adjust our expectations, set better boundaries, or heal wounds from our own childhoods. In the meantime let’s remember that having our kids witness our imperfections isn’t a problem. We have been slowly venturing out of the house - in low traffic stores like @kohls or (my fave) @michaelsstores. ⁣ ⁣ I would have never guessed that THIS would be our new normal. New lessons I’ve learned while parenting in a pandemic: ⁣ 😷 I’m a Karen. And while my husband reminds me I should just turn around when I see someone without a mask and hold my tongue, sometimes I can’t help it. I want to experience “normal” things with my baby and I can’t do that comfortably if we all can’t respect each other with a mask. ⁣ 😷 Baby wearing is awesome! It allows me to hold my baby close (and keep him away from curious strangers) while still being hands-free. (So far, the @mobywrap has been our favorite!)⁣ 😷 Getting out of the house is a whole experience for my baby - he quietly observes EVERYTHING while at home he would be whining for the next activity! ⁣ ⁣ What have you learned about parenting during this time? I've had a really nasty cold all through the half term holiday, and Jon has had to do some software release work overnight twice 😱 so although he took time off to help, he's been exhausted. My amazing Mum came to the rescue and took the children to soft play with one of their aunties and 2 of their cousins, then they had a sleepover. (Pic from Mum showing them super excited 😍 - apparently she heard giggling for a while before they settled down!) The break has massively helped me to feel human again and get my voice back! 🙌 And more importantly, my lovely children had a blast for a couple of days that could otherwise have been pretty boring and frustrating for them. Every time I get any kind of illness, even a cold, I think about how much I took for granted the ability to just BE sick, without worrying about anyone else. My children are now old enough that they CAN play together, but they still want to play with me, and I felt so guilty earlier in the week when I was telling them I didn't feel up to joining in. Parent guilt is awful! So hooray for grandparents! Sadly my germiness meant we had to cancel a trip to see the other grandparents earlier in the week, which I'm gutted about. Over-tiredness has been making bedtime a huge struggle since little J dropped the nap. So grateful that my husband has had the past week off work, so has been here for bedtimes. He's very good at calming J down when he's dysregulated at bedtime. I honestly don't know how he does it. If I try to do the same things, it doesn't work nearly as well.
