Your top 3 songs of this year?

Those are always so difficult but, nonetheless. Here's three songs I discovered this year that throttled me (/pos). We're going crescendo, starting off strong and ending with my most favoritest of this year.

Greta Van Fleet - Stardust Chords A friend has bestowed upon me the grand gift of the discovery of Greta Van Fleet via their album The Battle at Garden's Gate. It is, undoubtedly, an album that works extremely well as a unit, and its power is such that it convinced even my friends who aren't into listening to full albums that this one was worth the trouble. Musically, there is a lot of inspirations from classic rock of the 70s, obvious to those well acquainted with that genre, but of course much modernized to end up with an incredibly clean and refined sonority in the end that truly elevates it to new heights. Stardust Chords is for me one of the brightest highlights of this incredible piece of art, with those soaring vocals that grip your bones and send you ascending with them. -

Këkht Aräkh - Wanderer Is there any surprise? The ukrainian songwriter shook everyone with his sudden inclusion of rap-like diction and rhythm within his new song, clearly apparent in his music video that mixes classic rap moves within traditional BM aesthetic - and all of it, song and video, enshrined within his usual romantic melancholy as he sings about love and loneliness, as always. And it is masterful, and deeply moving. -

Les Chants de Nihil - Clarté de la Pluie Of course, I already rambled about this one in past posts: this is my absolute favourite discovery of this year. I had explored their discography in the past ('Là où nous étions les rois' being my fav song of theirs for a bunch of years now), but somehow had never taken the time to check out that particular album, and. What a punch in the chest. This album (namely, La Liberté Guidant le Fer) is a unique masterpiece that works at its best as a Whole, but still, I cherrypick this specific song because it carries itself strongly on its own. It sweeps you into the wet streets of an unknown city, under pouring rain - and as the singer, overtaken with old age, screams about his upcoming end and his willingness to meet it in peace, you're left with your heart bleeding through your chest.

BONUS (More like I originally wrote this one for the first of the list and then remembered about Greta Van Fleet but didn't want to delete all my good writing talking about this cool band so i'm giving it to you here):

Hypno5e - Acid Mist Tomorrow Discovered this band in february of this year with the release of their newest album, Sheol, but if I had to share one song it'd be this one - Acid Mist Tomorrow, introduction to the album of the same name from 2011. It's also an excellent introduction to the band as a whole, I believe, because of its concentration of their signature sounds - the sudden, brutal, heavy metal phases, intercut with soft and tender light guitar adorned with voice samples, only for it to start and stop and start again, like a pulsating energy. If you're not shy in the face of experimental sounds, you might appreciate Hypno5e's grandiose and complex artistry.

Okay i tried on twitter to no avail, i simply don't have enough reach over there, so let's try here.

I NEED HELP finding lyrics to the song Who Wakes Up From This Dream Does Not Bear My Name from the band Hypno5e!

I simply can't find anything online (except the short poetry excerpt at the beginning of the song, which is also the only part I can hear and understand 100%).

I have bad sound processing and also to be honest the singer's accent is simply too hard for me to understand (ironic since I am french myself but c'est la vie).

If you have those lyrics from somewhere (not sure if they've ever released physical lyrics pamphlet or anything but who knows) OR if you're good at understanding english with a french accent and like retranscribing shit, can you please help me out?

I'm willing to draw a little sketch for whoever can get me those lyrics because I assume retranscribing them could take some time and effort, and also I'm a bit desperate.

20 SECONDS FALLING MAN – Resilience

Depuis 2009 le groupe 20 Seconds Falling Man écharde sa musique par des épines de tension post-hardcore, noueuses de pression et par effet de dilation d’explosivité libératoire.

20SFM (abrégé) appose dans sa pleine démarche ce que le post-metal transfigure dans sa légitimité créatrice, dans une dualité de lumière, de ton et de constate complexe, que les différents climats racontent dans le fond et la forme des courants de plusieurs styles musicaux.

Il y eut come genèse musicale cette émergence sonique avec les EP#2 en 2018 et EP#1 en 2011, du “Live At Le Ferrailleur” (Live - 2021), le single “ A Forest” (The Cure Cover) en 2019, aujourd’hui « RESILIENCE » est la seconde partie du diptyque initié par le premier long format « VOID » en 2021.

Pénétrées d’étreintes cannibales « Resilience » épouse le fiel et une ardente plénitude tout à la fois. Le groupe agite l’obscur comme pour le suspendre et en magnifier sa résistance au choc de ses métaux lourds, au trauma de sa noirceur nihiliste par sa capacité à surmonter son désespoir vers la lumière humble de ses faiblesses humaines, de son émouvante émotion à la divulguer, par des tempêtes majestueuses, par ses clairs-obscurs crépusculaires qui s’évanouissent vers des aubes de lumière céleste.

Je trouve toujours la beauté dans les choses étranges et ‘’imparfaites’’, ils sont beaucoup plus intéressants. Outre la forme d’une dualité, ombr et lumière, cri et chant posé, etc…Il y a dans cet opus cet équilibre qui sur le papier parait assez distinct et pourtant s’avère d’une tenue sidérante. L’on puise dans la musicalité du quintette les précipices d’Amenra, entre lourdeur congestionnée et force centrifugeuse, cri des profondeurs. Mais aussi toute une lumière favorisant une complexité dense, accrue, et des mouvements éthérés, explorant tout un pan d’intériorité qui nous transperce brillamment, bruyamment. Je pense au Japonais de Envy, dans ces éclairs d’espérance striés d’amertume vers une résilience lente mais profonde, comme un pardon que l’on se fait à soi-même, comblant les vides pour se vouer corps et bien à des émotions bouleversantes. Nous les avions au fond de nous sans savoir de leur véracité existentielle, et de leur impact cathartique une fois qu’elles ont trouvé la voie d’être expurgée.

L’album est autoproduit, composé de 7 titres, il a été enregistré et mixé par Christophe Hogommat (Dust Lovers, Mad Foxes, etc.). Le mastering a été confié à Thibaut Chaumont au Deviant Lab (Carpenter Brut, Hypno5e, Birds in Row, etc.). Le superbe artwork est de Jeff Grimal (The Great Old Ones, Gorod, etc.).
