I Know That I’ll Lose - Chapter Five - Where’s the Fun in Doin’ What You’re Told?
After his comment when she was leaving the hotel, she had expected Matty to be in pretty regular contact with cheesy one-liners and attempts to win her over. But how much they spoke to each other actually seemed to mysteriously lessen. A part of her wanted to ask him about it, but the other part of her assumed that he was probably just busy finishing off the tour that he was on. Eventually, she had the feeling that she might have worked out why he was suddenly less chatty. It was heard through the grapevine that perhaps a certain band with a certain curly haired frontman were travelling back in her general direction. There were rumours that they might be booked as a last-minute additional headliner for a nation-wide festival to try and move their ticket sales. The day before the news was officially announced, Matty texted her a picture of the line-up for the festival with ‘The 1975’ haphazardly scrawled across the top of it by him.
11:16am You should work this. The line-up looks good.
11:19am I’m not sure, looks pretty meh if you ask me. That headliner is a bit overrated.
11:20am :O
She laughed lightly as his message before just telling him the truth. It surprised her that he hadn’t already heard this news from his bandmates, because it had come up the weekend prior at the party under the conversation starter of ‘things Matty doesn’t know yet’.
11:20am I’m already working it. Got asked to a little while ago.
Her phone started ringing the second after that message had been received.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked as soon as she answered the call.
“I figured you’d find out soon enough.” She answered with a shrug he couldn’t see. “You only just got home, didn’t you? When do you fly out again?” She asked.
“In two days. I won’t be at your stop on the festival tour for a little under two weeks, though.” He explained. From the background noises she could hear, it sounded like he was at a restaurant or café or something. She absent-mindedly wondered who he was out with. “You reckon you can wait that long?” He added.
“I think I’ll survive, Matty.” She replied with a laugh.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to pretend.” He continued, the teasing tone instantly finding its way into his voice.
“Oh, good to know. In which case I will definitely die a slow and painful death by next Wednesday if you don’t get here before then.” She shot back seriously.
There was a pause on the other end of the line before he began chuckling, “Well, you have to wait until next Sunday before we can hang out. Don’t die before then.” He said.
“You know that it’s proper work, yeah? I can’t just sit around with you all day.” She asked, knowing full well that festival merch was very different to headline concert merch.
“Yeah, ‘course.”
  * * *
“This is boring.” Matty groaned from his spot on the floor of the merch tent where he was fiddling with her permanent marker. He’d come down to merch as soon as the band arrived on site, and had been sitting in the merch tent for nearly an hour now. She had tried her best to warn him about the difference between counting in and displaying merch for one headliner and support act compared to a festival line-up with 20 bands that all had a minimum of two shirt designs each, but he hadn’t listened. The workload was especially bad considering her brother wasn’t here, he wasn’t meant to be getting in on his flight from the previous stop on the festival track to help her until well after doors had opened. But Matty insisted on coming down anyway despite this.
“That sounds like a you problem.” She laughed as she continued counting shirts from what felt like the millionth box that she had opened. His company was nice, but it was also fairly distracting. “You could help me, you know.” She added.
“I am helping. I am providing essential company.” He answered as he reached over and pulled a slip of cardboard off the ground.
“How did you manage to swing coming back here for a national tour so soon after you just left, anyway?” She asked. It had surprised her to hear that he had been able to organise an international tour to the same country twice within as many months. It didn’t seem very viable to the band to be back in the same spot so quickly.
“We had downtime once we finished up the tour that we were on.” He shrugged. “I just suggested that we find something else to do and saw this. Put it to Jamie that we offer to be a last-minute addition to the set and he sorted it.”
“Isn’t downtime meant to be for actually having a break from this stuff?” She asked as she moved onto the next box.
“Downtime is boring.” He huffed.
“Burning the candle at both ends a bit there, Matty.”
“Death is inevitable, and I’d rather die busy than die bored.” He deadpanned. She glanced over at him, expecting him to be having some deep philosophical moment over this information. But there he was, sitting on the floor of her merch tent, scrawling a drawing of a dog on a piece of cardboard in permanent marker. “Look, it’s Allen.” He said with a grin as he held up the drawing.
As much as he felt like boredom was about to overtake him, Matty was adamant on hanging out in the merch tent for as long as he could. She had actively set him a challenge by telling him that she’d never say that she was into him. He already knew full well that at least a part of her was, even if only for superficial reasons, because she wouldn’t react to him in the ways that she did if she wasn’t. It was potentially a bit arrogant of him, but he had pretty good reason to believe that he was fairly proficient on picking up other people’s signals and being charming. So, her comment was just a red flag to a bull; to say that she’d never tell him something like that. He had been thinking on the best way to go about it, and certainly step one was to maximise the amount of time that they were actually in each other’s space. Being able to come out for the festival was something in the interim until he could come up with a more concrete idea, but he wasn’t about to waste any time that he had available. Step two was that he had to work out the right buttons to press to get her to admit that she fancied him. There was a fine line between being a sleaze and being charmingly flirtatious. He liked to think that he walked that line pretty well. But nonetheless he had to be careful that he was pressing the right buttons, and not crossing that line by pressing the wrong ones. That was going to be a meticulous process of trial and error. He watched her with mild curiosity as she worked around the tent, trying to think of half decent ways to get her attention.
“Give us your phone.” He said after a few minutes of silence.
“Why?” She asked without looking up from the numbers she was entering into her spreadsheet.
“So that I can play some tunes.” He answered.
“Just play music off your own phone?” She frowned as she glanced down at him.
“International roaming is expensive and I know that you have stuff downloaded. Please?” He asked with a sappy smile. She rolled her eyes before grabbing her phone out of her pocket and handing it to him. As soon as he opened her phone, he saw that it was still sitting on their text chain and then noticed that his number was still… just that, his number. Not his name. Not a dorky nickname. Not anything. “Hey! Why haven’t you saved my number? It’s been nearly two months since I gave you that!”
“Why are you snooping through my phone?” She asked with a slight laugh. “I know who you are, I don’t have to save it. Maybe I’m trying to value your privacy in case certain people in my life decide to search through my phone when they’re meant to be playing music.” That second part about valuing his privacy was an afterthought to cover her own laziness for not having saved his contact, but it sounded good.
“Not my fault that you had it open on our conversation history.” He mumbled under his breath, shrugging as he quickly saved his contact as a kissing emoji.
A little while passed in silence, and she was beginning to get worried that he actually was going through her phone looking for something. There wasn’t anything too incriminating on there, but if he went into the right conversations on the right apps he might find some comments she had made about him that she’d rather he didn’t know. “Are you gonna play something, or what?” She asked after about ten minutes of him scrolling, trying to keep the nerves out of her voice.
“In a minute, I’m just making a playlist.” He answered. Shortly after that, the beginning of Feeling This by Blink 182 filled the tent. She nodded her head in approval at his choice, having not heard the song in a while. It wasn’t until a few songs had passed that she was beginning to notice a common theme in his playlist. XO, Situations, Lying Is the Most Fun, Shake It… these were all songs blatantly about sex. Sure as anything, as soon as she realised what he was doing, Sex by The 1975 started playing. She couldn’t help but laugh.
“I am beginning to sense some underlying messages here.” She chuckled, leaning against the counter to face him.
“Hm?” He questioned, looking up at her in confusion.
“Don’t play dumb, Matty.” She said as she shook her head.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. What underlying messages?” He asked innocently. As soon as she went to call him out on it, the doubt in the back of her mind set in that maybe it was just a coincidence. There were about 4,000 songs on her phone, it was possible, albeit unlikely, that maybe it was just chance. Was she just pulling a pattern together herself? Unless he just wanted her to think that it was all in her head? That sounded like something he’d do. The longer she took to answer, the worse the smirk on his face got.
Thankfully before she had to dive headfirst into that conversation, there was a noise from the other side of the tent. “You both still alive in there?” A familiar voice called as George poked his head in through the door.
“George! Hey!” She grinned as he stepped inside over Matty’s legs and pulled her in for a hug. “Good to see you.” She added as she hugged him back tightly.
“Hi, love! Hope he hasn’t been too painful?” He asked as he gestured down to their friend on the floor. She looked behind George at Matty, only to see him smiling up at her unassumingly. The music had also mysteriously stopped.
“He’s been… interesting.” She laughed. He just gave an over exaggerated wink in response.
“Well, I am here to take him off your hands.” He said as he offered a hand out to the frontman. “Doors are in thirty, Matt. Come on.” Matty grabbed his hand, standing up with a sigh. The two of them headed out of the tent, and she was glad that she might finally be able to get the last of her work done.
“Oh, wait!” She heard Matty shout as he suddenly came barrelling back into the merch tent, a wristband in hand. “Here, you need one of these.” He said as he took her left wrist in his hand and secured the all access wristband. He intentionally let his movements linger, and it didn’t go unnoticed. She just looked at him sceptically as he pulled his hands away, trying to work out what the hell he was doing. If he could work out her weak spots, he could easily use them to his advantage. He would just have to keep testing the waters until he hit the mark. “See you later!” He shouted as he ran out to catch up with George.
“What are you doing?” The drummer asked him with a tired look.
“Nothin’.” He shrugged, smiling to himself.
The half an hour until doors opened flew by in no time at all, and soon the torrent of concert goers started to flow in through the gates. Management running the festival had told her that it was sold out, and festivals were generally a much higher capacity than a regular concert, so it was anticipated to be a pretty busy day. Especially when she was working by herself for the first half of it. She hadn’t quite been able to finish all of the set up by the time that she had to start serving customers, probably in thanks to Matty, which meant that the first hour of selling shirts was also coupled with folding the remaining shirts. But time goes quickly when you’re busy, so it was not long at all before her brother suddenly appeared in the tent, and then by their powers combined the sales were through the roof. The merch tent ran like a well-oiled machine when the two of them worked together, and the more they sold the more efficient it got. It wasn’t until her phone buzzed in her pocket that she snapped out of Sales ModeTM and came back to reality. It had been nearly six hours of solid selling, and she was starting to feel the effects of standing up for so long. She was probably due for a break soon. Which, apparently Matty shared the same sentiment. Or, at least that’s who she assumed the new contact that was listed as just a winking kiss emoji was. She had to chuckle a little at his choice of contact name.
3:46pm Come hang out.
3:52pm Can’t. Have to work.
She shot back as another person stepped up to the counter. She would have to wait until it got a bit quieter before she got her chance to go grab some food.
3:53pm Just get someone else to cover.
3:59pm There isn’t anyone else to cover. I’m here to work, I can’t just dick around with you all day.
The sales continued, the sun started dipping a bit lower in the sky, the bands on stage came and went. By this point in the day the festival was in full swing, and it was slowly but surely dying down at the merch tent. The people that were lining up now were the ones who took a million years to decide, then had to message their friend to check if they should get that shirt or the other shirt, and then in the end said ‘I’ll be back later’ only to never return. As she was waiting patiently for any of them to step up and actually buy something, she heard her name being called from the back of the merch tent. She turned to see her brother on the phone to someone.
“Can you go grab a few boxes for me?” He asked with a pleading look, covering the receiver with his other hand. “Apparently there’s some back behind catering that are a part of a giveaway or something. I’ll hold down the fort here if you can go get them.” He added, before gesturing out to the few people still trying to make up their minds outside.
“Yeah, no problem.” She nodded with a smile before ducking out of the tent.
It took a few minutes and chatting to a couple of security guards to work out where exactly catering was, but eventually she found it tucked behind a few of the food vans. As she circled the pop-up tent, she realised that she wasn’t entirely sure what sort of boxes she was looking for. Were they small boxes or big boxes? Should she have brought a trolley? Were they many huge boxes full of heavy hoodies or a couple of small boxes with posters in them? Shit. Who would she get to help bring them back if she couldn’t carry them all? Maybe she’d just have to make a few trips? Suddenly, all of her questions were answered. She rolled her eyes as she saw the curly haired boy sitting on the two boxes that she assumed she was meant to grab, joint in hand and staring idly around the venue. “I really should’ve known that you’d be here.” She chuckled as she walked over to Matty. He glanced up at her in curiosity, then looked down at the boxes he was sitting on.
“Oh, I’m sorry! Are these your boxes?” He asked innocently as he stood up off of them.
“They do say ‘for merch’ on the side.” She pointed out.
“That could mean anything.” He shrugged as she picked one of them up. It was oddly light.
“Are these empty?” She asked as she picked the other up as well. As she flipped open the lid, her suspicions were confirmed. “Did you put these two boxes together?” She narrowed her eyes at him in accusation.
“How strange…” Matty hummed quietly, opting to ignore the question. “While you’re here, d’you fancy a quick drink?” He added casually.
Of course. Of course he had managed to get her out of the merch tent and here to hang out with him. She pulled her phone out with a sigh, quickly verifying what the time was. It was just past five. She had started work at nine that morning. It was probably as good a time as any to take a break. Once it began getting dark there was going to be the usual small rush of people realising that they hadn’t brought enough layers and needed to purchase more, so it only made sense to take a break now rather than later. It was just purely coincidental that she was going to take it with Matty. She flicked her brother a quick text to let him know that she was going to take her break while she was out, and also that the boxes were not for them, before slipping her phone back into her pocket.
“Only if we get food too.” She agreed, laughing a little as she watched the satisfied grin split across his face. “You sort drinks, I’ll sort food.” She added. He gave a sharp nod before looking around for somewhere he could actually get a drink from. A large part of him had expected her to say no and to just go back to work, so he hadn’t really expected to get this far. While he jogged off in search of alcohol, she made her way to the first food van she saw and placed an order; pickiness wasn’t really an option when you were hungry with limited time. And given how many people were already here at the show it was likely that all the food vans would have a decent wait time before she actually got anything to eat. As she waited for the food to be ready, she took a quick look around the festival to see if she could spot where Matty had run off to. He was at a bar across the way, chatting to the female bartender who was running the till. There was clearly a lot of flirting going on. Lots of arm touching and laughing and Matty was just leaning right over that counter to be in her personal space. It had become pretty apparent in the time that she had known him that he was just a generally flirty and charismatic guy. She had seen it a little bit at the shows, but it had been very obvious at the party the other week. Which was fine. That was just him. She could accept that. But it didn’t make it any easier to watch him be like that with other people. Not that she was jealous, being jealous would mean that she specifically wanted that attention directed towards her, which she totally didn’t, it was just- The call for her order thankfully snapped her out of her thoughts before they went down that rabbit hole of justification.
As she turned around with the food, she saw that Matty was walking back with a triumphant look on his face and two bottles in his hands.
“Free drinks!” He cheered as he handed her one of the ciders and kept on walking right past her.
“Where are you going?” She asked with a frown.
“Dressing room.” He shouted back over his shoulder. “It’ll be quieter there and I’ve got some stuff to do.” He explained, cracking open his bottle and taking a swig from it.
“Oh, so you can work, but I can’t?” She laughed as she began following him, trying to balance the food in one hand with her drink in the other.
“You only work because of me.” He answered with a smug look.
“Other bands exist besides yours. You know that, right?” She asked.
“Yeah, but they aren’t as good. My band is the best out there. So, we pretty much have a monopoly on the gig industry. We own you.” What might have started as a serious sentiment on his part quickly devolved into a joke, and as much as he tried to keep a straight face, he couldn’t help but laugh when she scoffed at what he had said.
“You wish you had a monopoly on merch. I don’t think I’d ever get anything done if you were my boss.” She chuckled as she took a sip of her drink. That didn’t sound like such a bad thing… Her words had given him an idea. But he’d have to fire off a few texts tomorrow to see if it had any possibility of working.
They finally reached the backstage area after a couple of wrong turns around all of the tents that looked exactly the same. That was the downside of outdoor festivals, everything was a temporary setup hired from the same company. So, everything was exactly the same style of tent. The two of them sat down, eating their food in silence for a little bit before Matty decided he had better start to get ready for their set. “Which do you prefer,” He said as he held up two separate outfits. “go all out with the suit, or stick to basics with the shirt and ripped jeans?” He was hoping that this question might give him a bit of insight into which look she preferred on him, but the blank look and noncommittal shrug weren’t exactly helpful.
“It’s your show.” She answered before taking another bite of her food truck dinner.
“Yeah, but…” He started, before deciding that explaining himself was going to take too long and probably detract from his aura of confidence. “Never mind.” He said with a sigh, deciding to just stick with the shirt and jeans for the sake of comfort and consistent image.
After quickly changing he came back into the green room to sort out his hair. He had been feeling like he was probably overdue for a haircut. It was at that awkward length where it was not short enough to stay out of his eyes and not long enough to properly sort it out. Gelling it back seemed like the best option for the meantime. As he was messing about with his hair, he caught her staring at him through the mirror. He combed the gel through his hair and looked back at her with an eyebrow raised. “What?” He asked after a moment.
“Why are you gelling it back?” She asked with a frown.
“I just get annoyed by how it gets in my way sometimes.” He answered, shrugging slightly.
“Hmph. Fair enough.” She did not seem happy about this information. He found that far too amusing.
“You prefer the bed head look?” He asked with a mischievous smirk spreading across his face. He could work with that information.
“It’s just-”
“No, no, I get it. It’s very close in similarity to the post-sex look so I can see the appeal.” The smirk had spread into a grin at this point as he watched her cheeks redden.
She just shook her head at him, “Why are you like this...”
“Matt, did you end up sorting-” Ross began saying as he waltzed into the room, before looking up from his phone and spotting Y/N/N sitting in there as well. “Oh, hello!” He said with a smile. “What’re you doin’ here?” He asked as he sat next to her on the couch and stole one of her chips.
“Got dragged here by him.” She answered, gesturing towards Matty who was still messing with his hair in the mirror.
He nodded in understanding. “How’s merch going?” He questioned.
“It’s going good! I think we’ve already hit the expected sales total per head, so it’s only up from here.” She said eagerly, proud to finally get to tell someone that they were doing really well today.
“Well, I hope it’s not taking too much of your energy, the boys and I were sort of hoping you’d come out for a drink with us after.” He offered as he nudged her shoulder with his own.
“Which boys were thinking that?” Matty asked instantly as he spun around from the mirror.
“Obviously the ones that aren’t you.” Ross stated. “You wanna come out for a few?” He asked again.
“Yeah! I’d love to.” She beamed. The band had been excellent company the last time that she had the pleasure of hanging out with them and she was keen for the chance to get to know them better. “I’ll be finishing later than you guys, though. Probably a couple of hours later as long as that’s okay?” She questioned hesitantly.
“It shouldn-”
“Of course, it’s fine!” Matty interrupted. The two of them glanced over at him, before continuing to chat between themselves.
Eventually, the other two members of The 1975 found their way to the green room, and it wasn’t long after that before she had to regrettably head back to work. As much as they were fun to be around, she had a job to do. They all agreed to head to a nearby bar after the show and that she would meet them there once she’d finished up her shift. She stood up from her spot on their couch, already halfway out of the room before Matty called her name.
“I’ll walk you back to the merch tent?” He offered, not really waiting for a response before getting up out of his seat and walking out with her. “Are you gonna come watch the show?” He asked offhandedly as he lit up a cigarette.
“I can see the stage from merch pretty well, so I’ll probably just stay there.” She shrugged.
“You’re not gonna come up to watch?” He questioned with a ridiculous pout on his face.
“Why? So that you can wink at me any time there’s a mildly suggestive lyric?” She shot back with a laugh. He’d been overly flirty all day today, which was saying something since the usual amount was already pretty high.
“I’m only trying to look out for you, love. I just want to make sure that you can have the best possible view when I take my shirt off during the set.” He said casually. She looked over at him, expecting a wink or suggestive expression or something, but he was just acting like he hadn’t said anything at all.
The rest of the festival went by very quickly. There were a few more customers to serve, then it wasn’t long until The 1975 went on. She couldn’t tell from where she was at merch if Matty had been telling the truth or not, but it was probably better that she wasn’t able to confirm that information. Once their set was finished it seemed that people just wanted to head out of the venue and go home. It was a nice relief to not have an after show rush, it meant that they could begin packing up earlier than expected. By the time that she finally got to the bar that they agreed to meet at, it was just after midnight. She had rushed through a couple of aspects of count out, opting to do the rest tomorrow morning so that she had more time with her friends tonight. The band were incredibly easy to spot as she walked in, namely because Matty was currently in the midst of trying to wrestle a phone away from Adam.
“Just give me the phone, Hann!” He shouted, practically climbing over the table to try and get to it.
“Only when you agree to turn the damn thing off.” He argued as he scooted back in his chair to avoid his prying hands.
“Calm down you two.” She laughed as she walked up to their table. Matty instantly stopped what he was doing, looking up at her in surprise before abruptly sitting back into his seat. As he did, Adam threw the phone over to him without saying another word. She felt like she had interrupted something.
“Good to see you. Take a seat.” George smiled, gesturing to the empty space in the booth next to him. “How was work?” He asked in an attempt to break the tension that had apparently settled around the table.
“We did really well.” She answered with a grin. “How was the show?” She asked back.
“It was also really good!” Ross chimed in as he took a sip from his beer.
“The crowd were rowdy as hell.” George agreed with a nod, before giving Matty a knowing look. His face lit up as he remembered something that had happened during their gig.
“I have the best story for you about what happened when we played Give Yourself a Try-” He began, leaning over the table eagerly as he launched into it.
The conversation flowed easily once George had worked his magic and moved everyone away from Matty’s awkwardness. Adam had taken his phone away from him when he wouldn’t stop checking it for the last hour, waiting for messages about when she was going to get to the bar. Apparently Matty had been unable to recover from the pure shock of seeing the person that he was waiting for magically appear at the table. Normally he was pretty good socially, but once he’d had a few drinks and was staring at things through rose coloured glasses, he could be a right mess. George had a feeling that Matty wasn’t going to own up to that, though. So, for his best friend’s sake, he could get everyone to forget that it had happened. The time passed quickly with the five of them having fun, and it was not long at all before glasses were running empty.
“I think I need another drink.” Matty said, motioning that he wanted to make his way out of the booth.
“Don’t stress! I’ll go get us another round.” Y/N/N offered quickly as she stood up, not wanting to bear witness to another round of her favourite game: Watching Matty Flirt with Bartenders.
As she waited at the counter, the reason that she had gotten up ended up following her anyway. He leaned on the bar, fiddling with the coasters sitting on it. “Come here often?” He asked nonchalantly. She didn’t respond at first, unsure if he was joking or legitimately asking. “Name’s Matty. I’ll buy you a drink?” He offered as he held his hand out for a handshake.
“You’re such a twat.” She laughed, shoving him lightly in the shoulder. He grinned in response, making a mental note that she had probably reacted best to his dorky jokes out of everything else that he had attempted today.
“I came up to help you carry the drinks.” He explained as the bartender brought them over. They scooted back into the booth, handing the drinks out and diving back into the conversation.
It was hard not to notice during their discussions that Matty was pretty good at being the loudest opinion at the table and was also very proficient at talking over his friends. It was especially apparent when he was enthusiastic about a topic. She could see that after two decades of being together, the other three men were just used to it at this point in their lives. George especially seemed to receive the majority of it. As the boys chatted about heading back home tomorrow, she noticed Matty’s arm making its way across the back of the booth behind her. She gave him a sceptical look as he did it, but he didn’t look away from his friend’s conversation. A part of her wondered if maybe he had jumped up to help her at the bar so that they’d have to be sitting next to each other when they came back…
Eventually after a few moments he spoke up. “Admit it.” He said in a low voice as he leant in closer to her.
“Admit what?” She asked in confusion, frowning up at him.
“That you’re into me.” He elaborated as he turned to her with a smirk. Ah. She understood why he had been acting different all day now. He was trying to con her into confessing feelings for him. Not that there was anything to confess.
“What? No.” She laughed.
“But you are.” He argued with a cocky expression, sounding far too sure of himself for comfort.
“Am not.” She maintained.
“Cut it out, kids.” George said to them without looking away from Ross. Matty wasn’t about to argue with George after he bailed him out earlier, but he wasn’t done pushing the point either. He’d need to find more time to talk to her. However, he knew that wasn’t likely to happen tonight.
By nearly two in the morning, they collectively decided that they should begin winding up their night. She had started work at nine that morning and the fifteen-hour work day was quickly catching up with her. And the band had a flight to catch the next day. The five of them stood outside the bar, watching as the last few stragglers made their way home. George, Ross and Adam all said their goodbyes, exchanging hugs and saying that they were looking forward to seeing her again at some point. They took a few polite steps away, giving Matty the chance to say bye without them hanging around to give him shit for it.
“You’re welcome to come back to the hotel.” Matty suggested with an eyebrow raised. She let out a sigh, ready to decline the offer but he continued. “For real, though, funny business aside. The hotel is closer to here than your place.” He said, his tone instantly switching from joking to serious.
“It’s okay, I’d rather get a good night’s sleep in my own bed.” She replied. “I have to finish up a few things with the stock tomorrow back at the warehouse, anyway. Thank you, though.” She added with a smile.
“It’s all right.” He nodded, pulling a cigarette out of his pocket and lighting it. “Was good seeing you, as always. Get home safe.” He said as he pulled her in for a tight hug. He still had that familiar smell of stage sweat clinging to him around his usual combination of weed and charity shop clothes. As soon as he moved back, she was already missing his company. Any day with him always ended up being an exceptional one and she hadn’t realised how much she missed being around him until he was back again. If she was totally honest with herself, a part of her probably was into him. But she was glad that she wouldn’t have to see him for a while and deal with that. Having feelings for someone like him would not be fun to confront. He turned and started walking back to his friends, already writing the text messages in his head that he had to send off tomorrow.

Finding the Right One
a/n: So here I am, finally going to post what I’ve been sobbing over for the @grishaversebigbang. Cheers to being able to participate in this event!!!

Summary: Ravka University’s Golden Boy and Ice Queen—two totally opposite people join forces in finding each other’s “ideal person” for the sake of “finally finding happiness”. Being the head of their department’s student council and knowing each other since their senior years in high school, they both thought that finding the right one for the other would be easy. But it wasn’t as they’d expected.
Could they finally realize that the one they were looking for was already in front of them?

PART I   PART II  PART III
The agreement was simple: be on campus before seven for the meeting of the upcoming event of the Engineering Night happening in less than a month.
Zoya released an exasperated breath as she checked her watch. It was thirteen minutes past seven, and Nikolai was still nowhere to be seen. The said Golden Boy was good at almost everything, but coming on time was never in that list and it made Zoya want to throw at least five alarm clocks at him if it meant getting him up at the right time.
The two other members were already present in the student council room, the people assigned by the elected president himself. They looked like they were still fighting off sleep as they sat at the opposite sides of the table.
Genya was holding a cup of coffee in both of her hands, staring at the liquid with narrowed eyes, like she was plotting on how to murder it.
David had his laptop open in front of him already, squinting from time to time as he continued to type vigorously on the spreadsheet and write on a small notebook on the side.
When the final results of the council presidential election were announced, Zoya wasn’t surprised when Nikolai won by a landslide. Besides, who wouldn’t trust the Golden Boy of Ravka University? Consistent dean’s lister, an active member of the music club and the Ravka Dance Crew, and unfairly handsome—just as Nikolai liked to describe himself.
It only became a surprise to her when Nikolai had suddenly appeared in front of her at the library, clumsily sitting down and asking her if she wanted to be his vice president.
Zoya’s first thought was to chuck the book she was reading at his head.
But she had remembered that they were in a library and doing the said thought would cause a commotion that was most likely not allowed in the place.
At first she thought Nikolai was just messing with her, but his face had shown no sign of mischief—which was quite a rare sight to her—and Zoya realized that he was really being serious about it. He’d told her that there was no one he trusted enough to lead alongside him.
It took a few short days of convincing before Zoya finally agreed, and she was surprised that the crew Nikolai had handpicked were their old colleagues. They were nearly inseparable after they’d settled their coordination—like the gears of a well-oiled machine.
Now she found herself starting the meeting fifteen minutes late because she knew that if they continued to wait for Nikolai, they would probably be late for their Monday classes.
“Well, since our golden president is still not here, I’ll do the honors.” Zoya took a swig of coffee from the small thermos in her hand, pulling the portable whiteboard at the head of the table, its squeaking wheels echoing throughout the room. “David, status report.”
She held a hand out, and Genya quickly tossed her a marker.
David gave his chin a scratch before looking up from his laptop. “Let’s start with the things still needed to do,” he said, then he was enumerating the things he had written on his list.
Zoya proceeded to write it on the board, slightly appalled that there still were several tasks left needed to be done, two which were crucial and must be on priority.
“I’ve already talked to the head of the facilities,” Genya added, finally looking up from her coffee. “They said that it was already approved that they would let the setting up of the stage at the center of the track oval.”
“Thank goodness that’s out of the list.” Zoya let out a huff, and then she remembered what she had done for the requirements to be done. “I’ve run the permits and completed it a week ago. They said they’d get back to me in a few days. I swore to the saints in heaven if they still wouldn’t have given me any updates tomorrow, I would shove their foot up their asses.
Genya let out a laugh. “Well, what do you expect? It’s Ravka.”
The door barged open, and someone appeared at the threshold. All heads turned to the doorway as the blonde boy stood still and stared back at them.
Zoya raised a brow and eyed the wall clock at the opposite side of the room. “You’re late.” She gave her best cold expression that she was known for, which always left most people cowering back or visibly shaken, but Nikolai had always been immune to it. “It’s seven-twenty.”
Nikolai gave her a grin, and Zoya wanted to throw the thermos she was holding at him. “I’m the president. You’re just early,” he replied.
Zoya erased her previous thought. She’d kill him instead.
Nikolai must have sensed her deadly idea because he laughed lightly, raising both of his hands up in surrender. “Okay, I’m joking. I’m sorry for being late. Shall we continue in bad-mouthing our dear Ravka?” He turned to Zoya and mouthed something to which she understood as, My insomnia sucks.
She felt her small irritation dissipate as she eyed Nikolai settling his bag in the shelf at the far corner. True enough, the dark circles under his eyes were proof of his restlessness. His sleeping disorder often slipped from her mind—though she had witnessed how it affected him during the nights it was at its peak.
Bombardment of memes at one in the morning, when Zoya was still up finishing her lab reports or reviewing for a test, the constant sound of a message being received echoing through her room.
Or the sudden calls in the middle of the night where Nikolai mostly asked or told her any random shit he’d think of until Zoya would hear him snoring softly in the background before she ended the call and went back to sleep.
“Confirmation about the guest band we’ve planned to invite?” David asked, snapping Zoya out of her thoughts.
“I’ve talked to them yesterday, and they confirmed already,” Nikolai answered as he put his glasses on.
“So that’s two crucial things down,” said David, crossing out on the page of his notebook.
Zoya clicked her tongue as he started walking towards their table. It caught his attention, and he stopped midway.
Nikolai met her eyes with a questioning look. She gestured at his shirt, tapping at her chest gently. He raised a brow as he looked at his blue button-down, and winced when he noticed the top two buttons were in their wrong places, leaving the material in a rumpled mess.
“Thank you,” he mouthed to Zoya.
She only shrugged, but she was actually fighting a ghost of a smile twitching its way to her face.
More than an hour later, their meeting finally adjourned with things looking good for them, and just in time for the start of Nikolai and the twins’ first class of the day. The siblings had already gone from the room, as well as David who still needed to consult for his thesis.
“By the way, I’m still talking with one of the sponsors. Still quite hesitant, they are, and not that easy to charm,” Nikolai told the two girls just as he was about to exit the room. “I’ll update you about my friendly chat with them as soon as possible.”
           Genya nodded. “You got it.”
“Hey, Lanstov.” Zoya paused for a second before grabbing the thermos she had set on the table some time earlier. She tossed it to Nikolai, who caught it with surprising ease. “It’s coffee. You need it more than me.”
Nikolai stared at her, to the thermos, and then back at her. His face gave mixed reactions at once—but it was mostly shock. “Wow, I think this is the first time you shared your holy drink with me.”
           “Don’t get used to it.”
The smile he gave her was fond, and he raised the container in a toast-like fashion with a matching wink. “Thanks, my ruthless truffle.” Then he was out of the room.
Zoya just shook her head and went back to arranging the small stack of paper in front of her, her brows creased into a slight frown. It was when she felt a weight in the air did she look up from her work and she saw Genya staring at her, amusement evident on her face.
           “What?”
“So when are you two going to date?” asked the redhead.
Great, here we go again. “I’ve told you for like a million times,” Zoya said exasperatedly, setting a tired hand on a table, “I don’t date.” When Genya still didn’t look convinced, she added, “At least not anymore.”
The other girl laughed. “’My ruthless truffle’? It’s already given that Nikolai loves making nicknames for everyone but he only calls you that,” Genya said. “We all know he worships chocolate truffles.”
Zoya snorted. “He calls me that because he knows I don’t like truffles.” It was actually true, but Genya didn’t seem to buy it. Nothing would ever convince her.
           “Oh, really?”
           “Alright, where’s this conversation going?”
“I don’t know, where do you want it to go?”
“Genya,” said Zoya, her voice tired, “it’s never going to happen.”
And it was the truth. Nikolai deserved better—the world, even. The boy was full of light and purity and optimism; he always saw the good in everything and it was only one of the many things that made him all-Nikolai.
He was the Golden Boy, all in heart and nature, and Zoya was surprised he’d stayed close with her throughout the years after the disaster back in their senior year in high school. Even more when they both enrolled at the same university, and in the same major, resulting in them being always together. And thanks to that, there were some rumors circulating in their department about them being a thing.
She would never know what made him trust her, despite the rough nature and sharp tongue that she had. Nikolai saw all of who she was, and he didn’t mind one bit.
But who was she? The famous Ice Queen. The one who could make people shrink back with the mere raise of an eyebrow. Merely thinking of that fact would already make the thought Genya wanted unrealistic, and it would stay that way.
Zoya intended to make it stay that way.
“I’ll be staying at the library for the meantime. Probably until the next class at eleven.” Zoya pushed the stack of papers to the side and pinned it down with the puncher. “Message me if you need anything.”
She gave the redhead a half-hearted smile before she was out of the room.
****************
Nikolai thought his day couldn’t get any better. At times when he was proven wrong, he’d gladly accept it and find it rather amusing that he had actually made a mistake.
But when he wasn’t able to attend his Numerical Methods class due to some apparent reason, he realized that he didn’t particularly like this day to be proven wrong.
First was his day starting early—as early as one in the morning when he was hit with the restlessness of his mind for the nth time. He had actually itched to call Zoya again, but he remembered that he had already done that just a few nights ago when he was in the same state, so he decided to read the upcoming lesson of their major instead. That resulted in him falling asleep sometime past five, and waking up late for the council meeting he set at seven.
Their dreaded Thermodynamics midterm exam was moved from Friday two weeks from now, to Monday at least three weeks from now, and Zoya had been cursing all throughout the time they made their way to that class until it started. She had been berating the fact that it was going to be very late for a midterm examination as it was already nearing to the finals week.
Halfway through the said major subject, their professor had given them a surprise quiz which literally came out of nowhere, and Nikolai’s still sleep-deprived mind was only able to comprehend and answer half of the questions. It ended up with Nikolai and Zoya drinking yet another cup of coffee from the cafeteria after class while talking—debating—about their own answers, and the people within earshot probably thought they were arguing.
Later when Zoya left for her part-time job at a coffee shop a few blocks down, Nikolai found himself in their student council room and he decided to get a shut-eye for a while before his two remaining classes.
He didn’t expect that his body would betray him despite the alarm he set on his phone beside him.
It was David who found him passed out on a chair by the window and had to kick his leg a few times to wake him up fully. Nikolai was thankful of the fate that brought David to the council room and woke him, otherwise he was sure he’d be able to sleep until saints know when.
Though the catch was the time on his phone being 16:30 when Nikolai checked it groggily and it was like a big slap to the face because he had a math class at three.
“You have to take care of yourself more, Pres,” David had said, and Nikolai couldn’t help the grateful look had appeared on his face. The other man wasn’t someone with many words, yet he always spoke the right ones. “Make sure you sleep properly tonight.”
I wish I could tell that to my insomnia, he thought to himself as he sent a salute to David’s way with a grin. “I’ll try, Dr. Phil.”
David only shook his head with a light laugh before waving goodbye and going his own way.
Nikolai gave a long sigh as he currently made his way to the expanse of the parking lot at the side of the university, almost dragging himself across to where he parked his old Buick muscle car before his body gave out in exhaustion. It was only a quarter past seven, but he could already feel the want of sleep coming his way.
The universe must have been angry with him today for an unknown reason because it chose the right time to start raining heavily.
It took him a minute to remember where he parked his car and made a beeline towards it. Nikolai was already drenched by the time he reached the forsaken car and practically threw himself inside.
He tossed his bag in the backseat and removed his button-down, throwing it in a heap on the passenger seat. His gray undershirt was almost black from being drenched in the rain, and Nikolai could already feel the coldness seeping in from the damp material. Plus, his glasses were blurry with droplets that stuck on the lenses.
It was too easy to believe that the universe and fates didn’t favor him today, and they both decided to throw shit at his way.
With a small chuckle over his thoughts, Nikolai pulled out from the parking lot and drove out of the campus. He reached over to his glove compartment and silently prayed that he had the spare towel stashed in there, otherwise he’d most likely catch a cold by tomorrow.
It was the first favor the day did to him when he was able to grab hold of the material.
“Thank the heavens,” Nikolai mumbled, violently drying his hair and neck with a hand as he turned right towards the main intersection.
The rain only seemed to get heavier and the wipers had to be continuously turned on to maintain a visible view of the road in front. He slowed to a stop by the intersection and waited for the light to turn green.
Nikolai wiped off the water from his glasses as he took the time to think about what he needed to do, but his mind only seemed to scream “sleep” and he knew it was the only thing needed to be done for tonight. Or probably drink a nice cup of coffee again.
He slipped his glasses back on just in time to see the stoplight signaling ‘go’ and he stepped on the gas.
As Nikolai kept a minimal pace with the other cars near him, the bus stop by the other side of the intersection came into view. He squinted against the bright lights of the cars and lampposts combined, and his eyes caught a familiar figure by the shed.
She was supposed to be home at this time.
Pulling into a stop by the curb, Nikolai rolled the window by the passenger’s seat down and bowed his head a little to look through. He flashed her a grin. “Need a lift, truffle?” he called out through the rain.
He was rewarded with a deep scowl as she bent down in level with his window. Zoya’s eyes widened for a bit when a look of recognition dawned upon her face. She was already soaked despite the roof of the bus stop over her. “Nikolai?”
           “The one and only.”
Zoya gave him a puzzled look. “What are you doing here?”
“I have class until seven, remember? And I happened to spot you when I passed. You’re going to get sick. Get in, I’ll drive you home.”
Nikolai saw a flash of relief on her face as she jogged towards the passenger door and got inside in a hurry. He pulled from the curb and started to drive, offering the towel from his head to Zoya. She grabbed it with a muffled thanks and threw the button-down he left at the seat earlier to him.
“The bus must have been stuck somewhere. I’ve been waiting for half an hour already,” Zoya muttered as she dried her hair roughly. She looked weirdly at the towel. “This smells like it’s been in a cramped space for a while and mixed with the scent of your shampoo.”
Nikolai wrinkled his nose. “It actually was. Take it or leave it, Nazyalensky.”
“I have no choice, do I?”
“Yep, don’t have any.” He paused as he took a U-turn and went back the way he came from. Zoya lived in the much quieter part of the city, and it was on the opposite side of where Nikolai was staying at. “Wasn’t your shift supposed to be done at five? It’s already half past seven.”
“A co-worker had an emergency and needed to go right away. Volunteered to cover up until the next came in.” Zoya reclined the car seat and leaned back more comfortably, her face obscured by the towel. “And I still have some shit to do.”
Nikolai chuckled. “Such a hardworking and selfless passenger I have here. Ravka is blessed to have you.”
“I’m going to kick you for that,” Zoya muttered, words muffled by the towel still over her face.
“What? I’m just stating the truth.”
           “Focus on the road, Lantsov.”
           “Harsh.”
           “Being careful.”
Nikolai gave a light laugh and shook his head. Their exchanges could go like this for hours, and neither of them would mind. Some people still couldn’t imagine them working together for the council, all because of their known opposite personalities, but it’s actually what made it easier.
It was just as easy as breathing.
He had known Zoya for years, and Nikolai surely knew that he trusted this woman with his life.
A comfortable silence followed soon after, nothing but soft sound of the rain bouncing on the roof could be heard. He appreciated some certain times like this—it helped quiet the roaring thoughts in his head that were the main reason for his restlessness at night. There were times he wished he could just cure the sleeping disorder he had in a flash, make the thoughts and anxiety over his responsibilities disappear. The weight of it was dragging down any strength and optimism Nikolai had left in him, but he still managed to keep himself upright.
And he knew he had to thank the people around him for keeping him sane.
The number of cars on the road lessened to a few when they finally turned to the quieter part of the city, and Nikolai saw the familiar landmarks near the apartment complex Zoya was living at. Thankfully the rain had finally stopped in the area, and he didn’t have to squint through the rain to know which roads he’d turn at.
The aforementioned woman bolted upright from her seat, the sudden movement startling Nikolai that he almost lost control of the steering wheel and his heart almost leaping out of his throat. She removed the towel from her face and frowned at him, as if she was contemplating to punch him or murder him.
“Shit, Zoya. What the fuck.” Curse words were often Zoya’s thing, but when he was caught off guard, he’d definitely not mind to adapt to the idea of cursing.
Nikolai sent a disbelieving look her way, though he ignored the part where he saw a stray hair clinging to her cheek, and the urge he had to tuck it back behind her ear because it definitely wasn’t the reason he looked away quickly.
           “Don’t do that.”
           “I just remembered something.”
“Can you remember something and not give me a heart attack at the same time?”
Zoya’s frown remained. “David told me he found you passed out in the council room earlier.”
           “I just took a nap.”
“Until four-thirty? You have a math class at three.”
Nikolai felt like a dog backed into a corner. He had no other excuse to that, so he settled for the deflecting method he always did. “Don’t worry, someone from the class told me that they just did a few more complicated examples of the previous lecture. It’s nothing I can’t do.”
He made a right turn, and the apartment complex was already in view. Nikolai drove a bit faster than he already was, and he could still feel the weight of Zoya’s gaze on him.
“Well, home sweet home.” He put the lights on hazard and pulled by the curb. When he finally looked her way, he found that she still had the deadpan look on her face, an eyebrow raised. “Okay, okay. I’m not doing anything later. I swear to the saints. I’ll try to get some sleep.”
“Why didn’t you call me last night?”
Nikolai opened his mouth to answer, only to close it again when he doubted the reply he was about to say. He looked away with a dry laugh. “Well, I figured I’d disturbed you enough in the past week.”
Zoya huffed. “Come on, you can do better than that. You could’ve made it two consecutive weeks.” A short pause. Then Nikolai felt a hand on his arm, the sudden contact startling him, and he was forced to look at her blue eyes. “But really, call me if you need to. I barely sleep too, anyway.”
“Wow. I think this is the first time you’re not wanting to disown me or throw me into a ditch. I’m a bit taken aback.” He actually was, truly, and Zoya just scowled at him as if she were offended. He chuckled and raised an arm up in surrender. “I’m quite aware of the fact don’t worry.” Then he smiled softly, patting her hand on his arm and adding, “Thank you, Zoya. I owe you one.”
The raven-haired woman narrowed her eyes at him. “You owe me tons, Lantsov,” said Zoya, smirking triumphantly. She tossed him back the damp towel. “And I’m planning on collecting those debts with caffeine or anything that would equal the favors.”
Nikolai could only laugh at the turn of events, though he was thankful for the sudden shift, and they were back to their usual banter again. “Will I be paying them for the rest of my life?”
           “Definitely.”
           “Pity me.”
Zoya opened the door and stepped out. “Thanks for the lift, by the way. Be careful on your way back,” she said before closing it.
Nikolai pulled the window down. “Wait, is this counted as a paid debt?” he called out just as she entered the main doors of the building. He was only given a solid thumbs-down and another smirk.
           “Dream on, Lantsov.”

Overtime -- A Jared Leto Oneshot
I know I have been heavy on the Shannon smut lately so I thought I would make it up to you Jared girls, especially you @msroxyblog and @nikkitasevoli and finally fill this suggestion I’ve had sitting in my ask box for ages.
I don’t do oneshots often, but if anyone wants to be added to a taglist for future ones just let me know.
t/w Smut. But I guess you already figured that out.
EDITED TO ADD: There’s now a part TWO!!
Tumblr media
“Mikaela, can you come in here please?”
I sighed and pushed my seat away from the desk, rising to see what His Royal Highness wanted now. I had started working for Jared a month ago. It was only supposed to be a temporary position, assisting while memory cards and hard drives full of old pictures and other such things were cataloged, tagged and classified. Once I started and saw the state things were in I had suggested a better management system, maybe setting up a database so that we could easily sort and retrieve everything once it was cataloged. Jared had jumped at the idea and consequently had dumped what felt like every old file he and anyone who had ever worked for him had in my lap, extending the original job estimate by weeks. Initially, I was very excited about that too, Jared was interesting and charismatic, not to mention easy on the eyes, and like many women, I had nursed a crush on him for years. But as one late night wound into another I was starting to get a little tired of his demanding ways.
Jared was in the living room when I found him, going through a box of what appeared to be old pictures that had just been sent over from God knows where. He looked up at me with a smile that said “You'll be working late again.” and held out a photo. “Do you think we could add physical media to the database too? Maybe with a reference to where they'll be stored?” He scratched his head. “Of course I guess that means we'll have to come up with a corresponding physical file system too.”
“Sure, boss,” I told him, hoping it sounded a lot more sincere than I meant it. I was puzzled by his sudden obsession with efficiency. From what I had seen since coming to work for him, Jared had the personal organizational skills of a senile ferret. If he didn't have an army of assistants following him around I was certain he would lose track of his own appendages. He was an amazing man with lots of talents but that wasn't one of them. “I can start setting something up first thing tomorrow morning,” I added hopefully.
Jared crinkled his nose and scratched his chin. “No, I think we should get something in place now. I have a few more boxes being sent over tomorrow and I would like somewhere for them to go.”
Of course, you would, Jared I thought. I had been looking forward to going home and having a nice glass of wine in my PJs, relaxing from a day of having Jared looking over my shoulder and critiquing my work every ten minutes. He seemed to take some sort of perverse delight in constantly interrupting me. I was less than thrilled to be spending more time today being shadowed and second-guessed. “If you insist,” I said.
“I do,” he replied, placing the photo back in the box before handing it to me. “You know you should really try to sound more enthusiastic, Mikaela. It shows a strong work ethic. Am I really that unpleasant to spend your evening with?”
I gritted my teeth and watched the back of his head as he disappeared from the room. A few weeks ago my gaze would have been directed a few feet lower. But the longer I worked with him the more my fantasies turned from grabbing his ass to kicking it. Busy as he was he somehow never failed to find time in his day to micromanage mine, or single me out from his crowd of employees for extra duties. I knew he couldn't be that unhappy with my performance or he wouldn't be giving me so much additional work. But I was growing increasingly tired of his exacting behavior, his ocean blue eyes were becoming less and less distracting and the crush I had been nursing when I got here was fading. I liked Jared, in many ways I was in awe of him, but working for him was turning out to be a little less exciting than I had hoped.
I took the box back to my desk and started rifling through the contents. Jaime, the newest of his interns, the one who had started just before me, popped in.
“Jared says you guys are working late again and he wants me to ask what you'd like me to pick up for dinner.”
“The key to my cell?” I joked. Jaime laughed. She had noted herself yesterday how often Jared had been keeping me late. “I don't care.” I finally told her. “Just get whatever Jared wants.”
“Sure thing,” she said, leaving as quickly as she had appeared.
I was lost in spreadsheets for probably a few hours when Jared appeared at my desk, a bag of takeout in hand. “Hey Mak, do you have time to eat with me?” He smiled but didn't wait for an answer. “I'll go ahead and set things out. Join me on the patio.”
I saved my work and closed the program. At least he had been buying me dinner when he kept me over, and I usually enjoyed our mealtime chats. They allowed me time to indulge my less professional fantasies while I memorized the articulate way he used his hands or the way his expression changed when he got onto a subject he was really excited about. He was hardly the worst client I had ever had. I knew the biggest part of the problem was with me. I had gone into freelance work because I valued my independence and I was starting to feel choked by all the attention. I just couldn't understand why, if he was so satisfied with my work, he felt it so necessary to constantly be checking up on it.
As I made my way to the patio I noticed how quiet the house had become. It looked like it was just Jared and me that would sticking around tonight. That had only happened one other time and on that occasion, Jared had abruptly changed his mind and decided to send me home part of the way through dinner. I began to hope I might make it home to my pajamas and Moscato after all.
It turned out Jared had ordered one of my favorite meals, sushi and soba noodles, the light spring breeze carrying the scent of rich broth and pickled ginger that caused my stomach to rumble and my mouth to water. My mood lifted a bit immediately and I couldn't hide my smile. Jared noticed and grinned back at me as I looked over the spread.
“I see you approve. I thought I remembered you telling me how much you liked sushi when we had it once before. You said you preferred to enjoy yours with a bowl of soba noodles though,” he added with an air of pride at remembering that detail. “So how is the new system coming?”
“I have something laid out that should be fairly simple to implement. Of course, if you want to go all out with a dedicated storage room we could set something up with RFID chips and readers and bins...” I knew Jared's weakness for technology. As soon as I mentioned it his eyes lit up like I'd brought him candy.
“How about you put together a proposal for that and I'll have a look at it,” he said, trying to seem casual, but I could see the gears turning in his head. “It sounds like it might work for me.”
It was a good thing I hadn't yet lined up any new contracts to follow this one. “Well. it would mean I would be extending my contract here even longer you realize.”
“That would just be another plus,” he blurted out, then his expression immediately changed, becoming more guarded. “I mean, you're doing a good job here.”
If I'm doing a good job here, Jared, how about you get off my back and let me do it? I held my tongue and smiled back at him as he pulled my chair out from the table. “Thank you. I really appreciate the opportunity.”
Jared gave me a measuring look before frowning at me. “Am I keeping you from something tonight? Did you have a date or something?”
Great, I had upset him. “No, I was just going to go home and relax. It's fine, really.”
“It's just that it seems you are less enthusiastic to be working with me than you were when you started. Have I done something?” He was making contrite puppy-dog eyes at me and I could feel that flame stirring up again. Stop it. Mikaela. It's Jared Leto. You know he's not interested in you, he's just trying to get more work out of you.
“No, I'm sorry." I apologized. "I guess I'm just a little tired. I'm sure I'll be all smiles in the morning.”
Jared cleared his throat. “I'll be looking forward to that,” he said, with only a hint of bashfulness.  “You. In the morning, I mean.”
Wait, what did he just say? Was Jared flirting with me? Was that what all his weird behavior and extra assignments had been about? How dense had I been? I looked at him, still standing there with my chair back in his hand and a hopeful look on his face. I could feel my jaw hanging open as the pieces fell into place, and my stomach fluttered awake. Why on earth was he being so shy about it though? I decided it was time to force his hand.
“Well if I'm going to be ready to implement this I don't really have time to chat over dinner. I'll just take mine at my desk,” I told him as I gathered my food. Jared stood mutely in place, watching me, seemingly unsure of how to stop me and maintain his casually detached appearance. Once I had everything in my arms I locked eyes with him, gave him my best sinewy pivot and turned around to head back inside. Jared swallowed hard and watched me carefully while I walked away with a little extra sway in my hips and about dozen backward glances. I felt something tingling and effervescent bubble up in me, like warm champagne. He was definitely interested.
I sat my food down on the desk and let my hair loose, waiting to see if Jared would follow me in. Sure enough, like a lonely puppy, he was at my side in seconds, his own meal in hand.
“You know if you can't even pause for conversation while you eat, maybe I'm working you a little too hard,” he pointed out, setting his own food on another desk.
“Oh no, it's fine. I understand.” Yes, actually, I finally did understand. I fought to keep some kind of control. I just wanted to rush over there and tear his blue cotton shirt off, there was so much skin I wanted to run my tongue over, but I wanted him to make the first move. I turned my laptop around and bent forward to look at it, making sure Jared had a clear view of my ass in my silky, figure-hugging skirt. Damn, I was glad I had picked it out that morning. I knew how good I looked in it with my favorite black heels. I wondered if that was what had pushed him over the edge? “I've still got quite a bit of design work to do for the system, see?” I said, opening the program and inviting Jared to come stand next to me.
I didn't turn around, just kept my eyes forward and my bottom up. I heard Jared loudly clear his throat from right behind me, and then I felt him tentatively set his hand down on the small of my back before leaning forward to look at the screen. I sighed and shifted, trying to signal my approval at his touch. “Uhm, yeah,” he responded, his focus clearly elsewhere, “It does look there's quite a bit to go. Maybe it would be best if we left it until tomorrow.”
I turned around quickly, not giving him a chance to back away. That immediately left our faces inches apart and his hand now found itself grazing the bottom of my thigh from where it peeked out under the shifting hem of my skirt. My heartbeat had grown to a thunder and I focused on his lips before responding. “If you think that's what's best. You're the boss after all.”
Jared made a little noise in the back of his throat and slid his hand a little higher until it had disappeared completely under my skirt and he now had a firm grip on my thigh. I could feel my blood redirecting itself to the newly vital areas and my brain beginning to fog. Of course, I had wanted him, I wasn't blind, but until he touched me I hadn't realized just how much. When he took a step forward and his chest met mine, something dark and vaguely lupine inside me stretched its spine and opened its hungry feral eyes.
“Mikaela... I know I'm the boss but....” His eyes were fixed on my mouth as well and his tongue made a hungry pass over his lower lip. He didn't move, however. Slowly my brain grasped what the problem was.
“Oh, no, not like that,” I spluttered. “I know you would never insist or ask something like that.” Now that I understood his discomfort I thought it would help if I dipped my toe in the water first. I carefully reached my hand to his lips, the pads of my fingers gliding over the smooth, lush skin. My desires now clearer to him, Jared's shyness fell away and he crashed his mouth into mine, devouring me in an open-mouthed kiss that was more tongue than anything else. I shivered against him. He was perfect.
Jared's hand moved up from my thigh, kneading its way over fevered skin as he pulled me closer and closer to him. My skirt rode higher as his hand advanced and I allowed my legs to fall apart so that he could better press himself against me. When his hips had fully nestled themselves forward and our heated cores brushed each other for the first time behind damp silk and straining denim he groaned into my mouth. The sound sent a new round of shivers down my spine.
Not caring how quickly we were jumping into things, or even just what we were jumping into, I let my hunger guide me, grasping the sides of his worn button up and pulling it down his shoulders. He helped to shrug it loose and then pulled his t-shirt off as well. I melted at the sight of that sculpted chest, the one I'd seen probably hundreds of pictures of the last few weeks, now, here, mine, to do as I wished with it. While Jared's hands started at the buttons of my blouse I tore my mouth loose from his, running my tongue along his clavicle instead, letting it dip wetly into the hollow as I sucked his divine skin into my mouth. When Jared flung my shirt open and shoved my bra aside so that he could take one erect nipple in his mouth I heard a sound like a purr. It took me a moment to realize it was me.
Jared pulled my shirt away and worked at the clasp of my bra while he teased and rolled my nipples with his clever tongue. I put my hands behind me and leaned back, my head dropping back as I arched myself in offering. I was absolutely intoxicated with his touch, the fingertip callouses of his otherwise soft hands catching against my skin as he explored every curve. I couldn't content myself with being a mere recipient for long, however, I had to get my hands back on him. Reaching between us I palmed the bulge in his jeans and was rewarded with a low moan. I re-balanced myself and added a second hand, searching for the feel of the smooth metal button of his jeans in order to free him. When I finally breached the denim confines and wrapped my hands around his stiffening cock he dropped his head against my chest, growling against my bare skin.
Slowly I worked my hands up and down his impressive shaft, dragging my thumb through the overflowing fluid at its tip before carefully twisting my hand to glide back down the velvety length. Jared's hands gripped tightly at my hips, his breathing quickening in time with my strokes. When he was fully hard I gave him a soft push backward and leaned forward, sliding his jeans down his hips and grasping his base once again. Snaking my tongue across his still damp head earned me a rush of swear words and he knotted his fingers into my hair.
Grabbing his thigh to brace myself I set a rhythm between my hand and head, sliding him ever deeper into the wet heat of my mouth. I could feel him twitching and thickening even further, could feel the tight way he held his hips as he fought to maintain control. I just hummed and swallowed him deeper, enjoying the effect I was having on him. He only let me continue for a few minutes though before he stepped back, pulling away.
“Uhm, Mak...” his voice was heavy with want, sexier than anything I had ever heard come from him. “I need to go get something.”
“Wait,” I told him with understanding, flipping back to my stomach so I could reach around to the back of the desk again. I fished my purse from the top drawer and dug for the little pouch of more personal items I kept there. I presented him with two brands of condoms. “Take your pick,” I said with a smile.
Jared grabbed both the packets. “First, turn back over,” he said with a grumble, already grabbing my hips to guide me into the position he desired. Once I was bent forward over the desk I heard him suck the air between his teeth before sighing appreciatively. “Holy fuck, Mikaela. Do you know how many times I've watched you working and fantasized about having you just like this?”
I reached forward and grabbed the back edge of the desk, bracing myself for whatever Jared had in mind. He let his hips come to rest against me. I could feel his arousal pushing into me as he guided his hands underneath my chest, pinching and rolling my pebbled nipples between those slightly rough fingers of his, waiting until I was panting and whimpering beneath him before drawing his hand around to my back. He dragged his short nails down the prone surface, and I found myself squeezing my thighs together, attempting to get a little relief for the throbbing between my legs. He followed the curves of my ass as he drew his hands even lower, grabbing the cool fabric of my skirt and bunching it up over those round globes rather than sliding it down my legs. I found myself smiling. It had been the skirt that pushed him over the edge.
I felt him draw his fingertip down the crease of my ass, his finger suspended just above the void by the thin satin stretched over it, and down to the wet fabric covering my cleft. “Yes, Jared, please,” I implored, pushing my hips back in search of more friction. Even through the fabric, he found the hard pearl at my apex, circling it slowly while his other hand explored the turns of my thighs. The contact did nothing to lessen the ache in my core, it only provoked it further, leaving me moaning while my legs wobbled uncertainly on top of my heels, I had forgotten I even had them on, but when I went to kick them aside Jared stopped me.
“Don't you dare,” he growled, pushing my leg back into place and moving his hands up to the sides of my panties. I bit my lip and lifted my hips a bit, expecting him to pull them down my legs but instead he grabbed the edges and gave them a good hard yank, splitting the fabric. I was surprised at the wanton moan that came from me as he pulled the ruined garment free.
Quickly he returned to teasing me, tracing two fingers around my soaking sex as the fire inside it raged hotter and hotter. I pushed up on one arm so I could turn and see what he was doing but he flattened his hand between my shoulder blades, propelling me back onto the cool plastic surface of the desk. With a kick he pushed my legs apart before plunging his fingers deep into my aching channel, curling them as he stroked me and causing me to mewl in pleasure.
“Oh yeah, Mak, I think you're ready for me,” he said before withdrawing his fingers. I heard the sound of a foil packet being torn into then felt his sheathed head as he slid it along my slit, bouncing it against my clit while I continued to mewl and whine. I wiggled my hips at him again, desperate for penetration, and when he finally began that long slow slide into my waiting depths I gripped the lip of the desk again and moaned.
It may have been our first time but if I had been expecting anything slow or gentle or tentative from him... well it just wouldn't have been Jared. Once he was satisified I had adjusted to him he slammed into me, rolling his hips once he was flush against me before withdrawing with a deliberate slowness and then impaling me again. He made sure to angle himself carefully with each pass, targeting that tender bundle of nerves inside me until my legs were shaking from the onslaught. My blood had grown heavy, my nerves sizzling under his touch. His fingers were digging harshly into my hips and the sounds of his moans as he dragged his head over and over that most vulnerable part of my sex only pushed me that much closer to the explosive climax I knew had to be coming. Once my moans had grown frantic and my core had started to twitch around him he grabbed my hair, pulling it back and causing me to arch for him, taking him to the hilt. Driving into me with brutal abandon he pushed me over the edge, my pussy convulsing around him while my vision shattered and his name came from my lips in a hoarse shout. He spared me not a minute, his pace never faltering until his grip on my hip tightened so much I cried out, my renewed shouts mixing with his as he emptied himself into the sheath separating us. Spent and shaking he released me, his head coming to rest on my back. I waited for my heart to stop racing and my lust to release my brain enough to function before attempting to slide out from under him.
Jared grabbed me by the waist, pulling me into the large armchair that sat in one corner of the shared office space. I laid my head on his chest while the sweat on our skin cooled and the euphoria lessened. With a reluctant sigh, he finally pulled away from me, grabbing his jeans off the floor and going to clean up. When he returned I replaced my blouse and was trying to tidy my hair up a bit.  He looked at my disheveled appearance and the ruined panties he has cast aside, a guilty look on his face.
“You know, Mr. Leto,” I said playfully, rising to give him a kiss, “that was entirely inappropriate workplace behavior.”
Jared kissed my nose and pulled my hair back from my face. “Well, maybe next time you'll be a little more enthusiastic when I ask you to put in some overtime.”

Super ContentCal Ifragilisticexpialidocious
ContentCal is much more than a social media scheduling tool. I will go as far as to say that it’s got it all.
Let me start by saying that I had tried many tools before finding and falling in love with ContentCal.  I was trying to remember how many apps I’d used the other day. Here are a few:
Hootsuite
Meet Edgar
Buffer
Social Oomph
Post Planner
TweetDeck
SmarterQueue
RecurPost
I know there are others but I can’t remember what they are called and I’m sure some don’t exist anymore too.
So you see when it comes to social media apps I’ve been around the block a bit.
No more!
Since I’ve found ContentCal I no longer have or need spreadsheets (numerous) or Word documents. Some of my spreadsheets were works of art in themselves. But keeping track of what I had or had not used was a nightmare. And I don’t have scraps of paper all over the place now either with bright ideas for blog posts either. And I’ve given away lots of  work notebooks as the chaos they caused me did not make me happy (p.s. disclosure – I’m not saying I’m a tidy person now
Tumblr media
)
Let me explain why I’m using ContentCal:
Social Media Scheduling
The first thing a tool like ContentCal has to do is let you easily schedule content to go out to your audiences on Facebook (pages and groups), Twitter, LinkedIn (profiles & company pages), Instagram and other platforms. You can schedule for any date and time in the future; you can preconfigure a set time to post on set days or you can post at random times.
Posts can be added as “approved” and go out at the time you’ve chosen. If you work as part of a team, or with a VA perhaps, content can be set to need moderation before it is published. If you run a social media management company you can schedule posts and receive feedback from your clients before the content goes out.
Planning Channels
It is the ContentCal planning channels that have rescued me from spreadsheet paralysis. A planning channel is viewable on the calendar but the content is only there for you to plan ahead. So, I have a blog planning channel where I have the titles of my posts assigned to a specific date. If you are running email marketing campaigns you can have another channel for that. You can use a planning channel for anything – vlogs, podcasts, interviews etc….and see the plans for the week or the month all in one view.
Campaigns
Campaigns hold the essential information for each of your social media campaigns. As with the planning channels you can be flexible with how you use the campaign feature. You could have a campaign to fill the places at a workshop for instance. Or a themed campaigned like my Confessions of a Website Designer series or Tosca’s Wicked Words.
For each campaign you set a start and end date and then write up the brief. The brief has anything in it that you want to remember about the campaign. For my email marketing campaign I have saved the links I will use to source reliable information. I also have a section in the brief to record metrics like how many subscribers I gain or lose in that period.
App
The app is what saves my house from bits of paper lying all over the place. When an idea pops into my head I add it straightway via the app. I don’t type up all the content of course – I just add enough text to remind me of the gist. Then when I’m at my computer I open ContentCal and write up the idea fully. Your bright ideas are never lost.
Integrations
ContentCal have started releasing some integrations that you setup using Zapier.  For example you can connect ContentCal to Google sheets which creates a copy of your post into a Google Sheet. Or you could create a Google Form and when someone fills in the form Zapier creates a post in ContentCal.  And an integration that I’ve not tried is between ContentCal and Pinterest.  Zapier is a great tool to connect all sorts of apps but you may need a bit of patience as sometimes getting two apps connected is a bit temperamental. But once your Zap is setup then  on the whole it’s smooth sailing.
Content Hub
The Content Hub is I think my favourite feature. This is where you put all your content, assign it to a category and use and reuse as appropriate. I create a post once and then if I want to use it again I can edit the content each time it gets published. The hub will let you know how often you’ve used a particular post. The hub is the place you keep your evergreen content.
Easy to Use
The user interface is perhaps the one reason that ContentCal tops the charts for me. It works for me visually. I get that the interface may not appeal to everyone. Much thought has gone into how the various features join together. As with anything new you need to give it time and use it regularly to see how it feels to you.
Customer Support
If I could give 5 stars for the level of support I would give 10. As I’m writing this I’m having 3 webchats with Ben. Here are the main reasons why this app beats the other social management systems I’ve tried before:
There is a bank of video tutorials to get you going at the start.
If they don’t have a video tutorial already to answer your particular query they will record one just for you – they have for me anyway.
They are very responsive to questions asked via their web chat facility.
If like me you are based in the UK it is a significant bonus to get help during our standard working hours rather than having to wait to get a response from someone across the globe.
Innovative
All I’m going to say here is that I look forward to reading their emails to see what new features have been added.
In summary, you can see that I really do think that ContentCal is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
If you would like a walkthrough of the app click this link to ContentCal and they will arrange that with you. Use “wicked spider” as the promotional code. You will receive $30 off your first bill if you decide to sign up with them.  If you just want to give the trial ago you can still use that promotional code.
p.s. Someone said to me the other day that they were apprehensive about putting all their content in someone else’s system and asked what would happen if they went bust or they lost all the content. That is a very good question and I can understand where it comes from. Firstly there is an option to export your content into a CSV file where you get the text content and a link to any images or videos you have uploaded. You could run the export on a monthly basis if you wanted to take a belts and braces approach. I have asked about the backup and restore policy at ContentCal just now via the webchat. When I get a reply I will update this post. I’m confident enough in their data recovery options to be using this app myself.
Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission. Keep in mind that I link to these companies and their products because of their quality and not because of the commission I receive from your purchases. I only recommend products and services that I have used myself. The decision is yours, and whether or not you decide to buy something is completely up to you

I got a ticket for going 49 in a 40 a few days ago. I don't usually speed, generally I just do 5 over. Wasn't aware that the section of road I was on was 40, the officer was sitting just in front of where it goes up to 45 apparently, but I was still speeding, and I'm going to pay it. My roommate mentioned that any speeding ticket that's 10 mph or less over the limit won't affect your insurance rate. Is this true? Does anyone know any cheap car insurance companies for new drivers?
I am coming up to 19 (1 week) and have had my UK Full Manual license since December 2012, it's now May 2013. I have tried everything to find cheap car insurance online and it's virtually impossible! I don't know if it's my area that I live causing it to be so high, or my lack of experience with driving. I have tried different addresses (i.e. family members) not in to be fraudulent but to see if it is the area, which is proving to be quite true. But I've tried insurance comparison websites and asked friends who they got their insurance from and still no good. My cheapest quote is around 2,000 which I just can't afford. I am going to university in September and will be going on various placements within the weeks I am there, so a car would really help get me to places easily. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on lowering the cost of insurance, somehow? I've tried all these telematic sites but it's still too high. Also, could anyone recommend any sites I could try for my insurance quotes? N.B. I haven't purchased a car yet (as there is no point if I can't afford insurance) but is there a year which can help to lower the cost of car insurance? Such as, rather than having a 10 year old car (03 reg) having a 3-4 year old car? Any specific year? Thanks very much.""

Car insurance for husband and wife.?
Recently I went to insure my daughter and her car in the company me and my wife have been insured for some time. I wanted to include myself in her insurance but it went up in premiums a lot and we decided to insure her without me as an additional driver. Before that (last year to be exact) I insured my wife and I was included as a second driver. Basically, I was advised to do so on the basis that it would be cheaper. I heard about this option before and therefore did not check it properly with this company. This time (with my daughter) this option went an opposite way with higher premiums, so I asked them whether I can exclude myself from my wife's insurance as well because my insurance allows me to drive any car, but was told: ...because you are husband and wife, by law you cannot drive her car without being included in her insurance policy whatsoever... I am suspicious about this statement now and feel that I am being cheated. Does anybody know whether this rule exist or is it just the usual salesmen lie? Thank you.""

Why are republicans fighting the health insurance mandate and not fighting the car insurance mandate?
If you have to buy car insurance and get penalized for driving without car insurance, whats the difference here? Its as much a privilege to drive as it is to receive healthcare. However no one thinks its an over reach of government to mandate car insurance. When you get in a car accident with an uninsured driver you have to pay for your own damage, so how different is it then when americans use the public healthcare system, the government has to use TAX DOLLARS to pay for their health care. Also why is it being categorized as a Government Takeover of Healthcare ? If I buy health insurance wouldnt it be more like a Privatization of Healthcare seeing that instead of having vast amounts of tax dollars going into the system, the health system would now be funded by the insurance companies by paying out claims.""

I just added it on and it's fine, so the insurance (progressive) sent me a letter saying I have to pay extra for adding a 3rd vehicle but nothing about the coverage amount. I'm looking for my first car, but I can't seem to find any I like. I like 1999 Vauxhall Astra and Peugeot 206, 207 and rcz. I don't like new cars, I prefer the older ones if that's any help. Anyone know any good cars to have as a first car that's cheap on insurance ? Thanks in advance :)!""
