Frenchposting - Athena

If you're even remotely interested in France and/or good cinema, I beg you to watch Athena. It's on netflix, it's 1h39.

I'm very jaded with french cinema. We have an insane reservoir of technical and acting talent and we use it for bullshit projects: backwards stupid comedies, boring period pieces with excellent costumes, and pretentious auteur circlejerk movies nobody cares about.

Athena is an example of what we can do when we decide to actually use our talent. It's a film that's about what France really is, how our political climate is, and for once it's not a fucking postcard destined to bring in tourists.

The story starts like this: a kid from a housing project is murdered by the police, and we follow two of his brothers. Abdel, who is a soldier, and wants the investigation to proceed calmly. And Karim, who decides that it's all going to burn until he has justice. With an implacable efficiency, he starts a riot and makes the estate a battleground.

The acting is astonishing, the shooting is insane (seriously, some camera movements are just plain dangerous), the whole movie is a handful of sequence shots (is that the word? or continuous takes?) that are never boring, the pyrotechnics are impressive, and it's harrowing. Maybe it won't touch a non-french person as much, but I was crying almost from beginning to end. But it can probably speak to anyone living in a western country because many of us have the same problems.

An easy way to recommend it would be to say any cop-hater will love it, but it's cleverer than that. And this trailer doesn't even do it justice.
