Finally getting to join the party started by @vesuviaweekly!

(fair warning I love writing about this kind of stuff so there are a looot of words here lol)

Meleia & Asra

Truly two halves of a greater whole.

Soft soft soft soft soft

They're both each other's first love, which is really cute.

(And both of them were super awkward about it at first because neither of them knew how to actually Talk to people)

Meleia loves Asra's wanderlust. Life is never boring with him.

Asra adores the way Meleia throws her all into whatever she cares about, be it as mundane as a sewing project or as huge as protecting the people she loves from the likes of Lucio or the Devil.

And on the subject of sewing... they're both crafty people!

Meleia makes her own clothes and Asra knits, so the two of them combined are a force to be reckoned with.

Meleia has a lot of self-confidence issues for a lot of reasons. Asra's always been there to help her through her rough spots.

Neither of them have a good sense of direction, so Faust and Forge (Meleia's familiar, a fennec fox) always end up doing most of the navigating when they travel.

They love reading together, making things together, exploring together, dancing together... they'd basically do anything and everything together.

(Except cleaning. Asra leaves stuff everywhere, and Meleia likes to keep the shop neat. It's about the only thing they have teasing arguments about.)

To Meleia, Asra is home. She can truly be her awkward and shy and geeky self around him, and she appreciates that more than she can ever say.

To Asra, Meleia is a beacon of light and joy. She cares so deeply about things and people, including the little kid who grew up alone on the docks.

Damian & Julian

In a nutshell, they are that one scene from Coco.

In all honesty, though, they tease each other but they are very much in love.

They're both intelligent and leaders in their fields of study.

Damian's an alchemist, Julian's a doctor... their styles have more in common than Julian ever thought at first.

They can and will be found having intense discussions about various practices in both medicine and alchemy using highly technical terms that no one else in the room understands.

They were a dream team when working to find a cure for the plague. Except for the arguments where Damian insisted that the plague itself must have been magical in nature and Julian was firmly convinced it was nothing more than a disease.

Damian's stubborn, and never afraid to show his anger or annoyance, but Julian always has a way of making things up to him. And they never stay upset or mad at each other for long.

Both of them are musically inclined, Julian with his vielle and Damian with his guitar. So whenever emotions are too strong for words, they connect through playing together.

Julian is all for the drama, while Damian's humor is more dry and witty.

Julian is the only person who can get Damian to dance on a table.

Chimalus, Nadia, and Portia

I've talked about Chimalus' dynamics with Nadia and Portia before, but I wanted to go into more detail about the polycule here :)

Dream Team 2 Electric Boogaloo

Chimalus and Portia are both always at the ready to help Nadia with whatever plan she has, be it city reservations, the next Masquerade, or just a picnic out in the garden.

Chimalus is the Heart of the trio, with their pure loyalty, good judgement, and a particularly kind heart.

Both Nadia and Portia admire Chimalus' quiet strength and clever mind. No matter how tough the problem, Chimalus finds a way to keep a relatively cool head and work their way through it.

Whenever Chimalus' lingering trauma pops up from their dark past, Nadia and Portia are always right there to help them through it.

Portia loves "dragging" Nadia and Chimalus off on adventures. Not that Chimalus or Nadia complain.

Book buddies!

The three of them basically have their own book club. They always meet up as soon as they're done reading the current book and chat about it over snacks (and usually tea and/or wine).

They all bond over animals, too! Between the palace horses, Chandra, Pepi, and Chimalus' familiar Skye the bluebird, they have quite a few critter friends to fawn over together.

They have a number of romantic moments throughout the TNG series from arguably the first but DEFINITELY the second episode. but they only get together (briefly before divorcing) in an alternate timeline episode which is also the season finale. Also they have a kid together in Picard but are still not allowed to be together She was married to his best friend and he was in love with her but wouldn’t say anything because he wouldn’t want to damage his bestie’s marriage and then his friend died and they met again years later and shared a lot of romantic and sexual tension for years. He openly admitted (under mind reading) that he had loved her since his bestie was alive but felt he couldn’t act on it. In an alternate future they got married. In the canon future they got together and broke up repeatedly because trauma makes relationships hard sometimes and they have a kid together who is named after the aforementioned bestie. An episode forcing them to share thoughts makes him openly admit that he loves her and has loved her for years even when she was married to his best friend.

kit herondale and livvy blackthorn:

They were literally straight bait. So Kit, Livvy and Livvy’s twin brother Ty were a trio with their own side plots in TDA. And well. We literally meet Kit when Ty breaks into his house and puts a knife to his throat and Kit gets distracted by Ty’s eyes. Then later Kit and Livvy have a few moments and kiss once. Then Livvy dies. There are some necromancy shenanigans. Kit confesses his love to Ty then immediately flees the country. Like Kit/Ty was clearly endgame from the start but Livvy and Kit just made out once.

galo and aina (submitted as lio and galo):

Iirc, the whole time the audience was set up to believe that Galo will get together with a teammate named Aina (i might be completely wrong but i think she showed romantic interest in him). That's what usually happens, anyways. However, studio trigger turned that premise on its head with Galo's budding relationship with Lio. In order to save Lio, Galo kissed him. They kissed.

jeff winger and britta perry:

the show starts off with jeff creating the study group so that he can get with britta, they serve essentially as narrative foils, with jeff not caring about people and britta caring too much about people, they nearly get married on THREE (3) separate occasions, they're secret friends with benefits for an entire season but break up when the group finds out, they're the only two people from the core group left in greendale when the show ends; but in the end they make jeff's "true love interest" the girl who was half his age when the show started (36/18)...

angel and cordelia chase:

They met as characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but their dynamic doesn't take off until the Angel spinoff Because the showrunners of Angel didn't go in with the idea of putting these two together, the characters' friendship was allowed to develop organically without the assumption of romance, which then made the realization of their feelings for each other more satisfying. Unfortunately the shadow of Bangel (Buffy x Angel) still held over Angel's character, so I think it was a hard sell at the time and didn't gain a lot of popularity in the years since. Both these two characters grew alongside each other, supported each other, and despite knowing that they loved each other, let each other go to pursue their destinies. A really underrated het pairing!

matthew and mary crawley:

They spend multiple seasons full of tension to get their happy ever after. There are so many tropes used between these two. They finally get their shit together and get married, and then have a beautiful child together. Matthew is so happy about his child being born that he doesn't pay attention to the road and fucking DIES IN A CAR CRASH. And that's how their story ends. It makes me so livid every time I think about it lol they really killed him off like that right after and I mean RIGHT AFTER his child is born. It's so foul and every man that they set Mary up with after that doesn't feel nearly the same

keiichi maebara and rena ryugu:

Fluffy harem romcom twists into yandere horror, but then twists again into a story of friendship triumphing over everything. Really holds for any pairing with Keiichi, but the rooftop battle in part 6 is just too good. A recent manga spinoff has them married to total randos, so their respective sons can have the same kind of relationship.

raleigh beckett and mako mori:

Literally everything about the writing of Pacific Rim make it seem like they're setting up for a romance between these two and then they just. Don't. Despite this, "drift compatable" was one of the most popular AUs for couples after the film came out for a hot minute because of how romantic they made the concept seem. *gestures to the entire movie* seriously (note: "drift compatible" essentially describes an in-universe quality of the relationship between raleigh and mako, meaning this quality was so romantic that it would be implemented for other ships in au fanfics)

kagome higurashi and inuyasha from inuyasha:

*Like half of these aren’t shippy.

1) Someone calls the rest of Mad Burnish Lio’s riff raff/cannon fodder as an insult, but one of them pipes up like “Actually we prefer the term Mooks/Lackeys/-insert similar term-”

- Look, when you’re constantly running for your lives and stressed, you insert a little fun where you can.

2) The Promare leave, and suddenly Lio is an atrocious cook. He burns water bad. Meis and Gueira don’t know what’s going on because he was at least half decent on the run.

It turns out Lio had been cooking by ‘feeling’, which actually means that his Promare had been tapping into the hivemind for other Promare/Burnish who knew how to cook, then instructing Lio.

- Who knows how they find out. Maybe the Promare come back and they find out that way. Getting rid of the Promare was the worst decision they made in the movie and I will never write an AU where they stay gone.

3) A random burnish traveler comes to Promepolis after everything, and Lio/others learn that outside of the area they were all working in, Freeze Force was seen as a terrorist group and Kray some kind of crazy dictator.

- None of the other bits of civilization were in any position to do anything OR they were kind of assholes who were very much ‘so long as they leave us alone we will have no issues’

4) Warning: Genderbends (we have lady Mad Burnish trio, because sometimes you just need it)

It’s grooming based bonding.

- Gueira makes a habit of clinging to Meis in the morning and begging her to do her make-up because Meis has the best make-up game ever. Meis always gripes at her that Gueira does this every morning, and every morning, Meis does her make-up. 

- For fuck’s sake Gueira, Meis doing your make-up is a forgone conclusion you don’t have to cling and beg. (but it’s routine/tradition at this point and neither is going to stop)

- Lio doesn’t wear make-up (it was/is a luxury they could/can rarely afford on the run). Her generals get around this by brushing her hair. Meis may or may not at least try to put some lip gloss on her.

- “I don’t see the point of this” “Shhh, Boss, it’s important to treat yourself”

5) Detroit is trying to play wingman for Lio but Lio misunderstands and thinks Detroit is in love with Galo instead. He doesn’t know what to do about his Promare being his love rival.

- Lio, to Gueira and Meis: "the fact that Detroit is madly in love with Galo is between me and her/him/them, so stay out of it!” all while trying to drag away a noodle shaped dragon of fire that has gone limp and uncooperative in his arms.

- Go back to Galo, Lio. C’mon, you’d make beautiful babies! (Weather that’s possible or not for them in this AU is irrelevant, Promare don’t know shit and Detroit heard it in the hive mind once)

6) Burnish (at least adults) don’t age so Lio is like 50 AU

- Meis and Gueira rag on Lio for dating Galo/being a cradle robber.

- Protective Burning Rescue.

- Look, it isn’t Lio’s fault that Galo is Galo, leave him alone!

7) That same AU, but ‘Burnish are perfectly integrated in society’ flavor. Lio saves Galo from the fire.

- Galo was 100% trapped and was going to die if no one had come for him.

- Kray is either caught for starting the fire or he fled the scene, either way, he’s not important.

- Lio went full armor, so Galo has no idea who his savior is.

- It was years ago so Lio doesn’t immediately connect Galo with some kid he saved once. He does when lightly prompted however (say, like Galo telling him the story)

8) I feel like there is more you could do with ‘Lio saved Galo years ago’ AU. Maybe something with mistaken identity.

Wotakoi

I love that this series has three couples in different stages of a relationship: one who’ve been together for years and love each other like well-worn grooves; one who have history but have only just recently begun a relationship and are discovering each other anew; and one who probably will not bring themselves to share a kiss for another 27 calendar years.

Narumi/Hirotaka: Honestly, the main couple of a series usually goes over my head a bit, but the more i thought about these two the more wretchedly fond of them I became. The thing I think of the most is how Narumi taught him how to smile as a child; how she did things that meant nothing to her, so easily does kindness come, but that meant so much to him; and how now that they are grown, he does things for her that take no effort, but shake her foundations. I think theirs is a love that grows quietly; something that cannot change the world, but can change them.

Koyanagi/Kabakura: My thoughts on these two are not complex, but they are deeply positive. I love how huge their personalities are, and how they fit around and against each other; I love the implication that despite their endless bickering, they are not an on-again-off-again kind of relationship, and have instead chosen each other over and over again for ten straight years. I love that despite everything, they are kind to each other, first and foremost; they find ways to apologise and to take care of each other, and treat each other gently in private.

Kou/Naoya: I love every ship in this manga equally but perhaps I love Kou/Naoya more equally than the other two? They are just so kind and so silly, and so sweet to each other in exactly the way both of them didn’t realise they were missing. I think about Naoya being told that Kou is “okay with being alone”, and realising that “okay with it” and “have accepted it” are different, and taking his little baby steps to fix it. I think about Kou giving Naoya every last drop of patience he’s trained himself not to accept, and doing so because it simply makes her happy. My only concern is that they are both bottoms. I don’t have a solution for this.

chiyo/nozaki + chiyo/nozaki/mikorin: im rooting for her in the face of such overwhelming stupidity. one himbo is difficult enough to seduce but two. chiyo is a hero and a woman of rare courage. i like the pair and the trio equally; again, if you go with trio, it’s important that they all love each other please!

What was your first viewing experience of Promare like? Was it in theaters or at home?

In theaters! I saw a trailer for it as an ad just before it started rolling out in the US and I was like groaning to my friends I wanted to see it bc Lio was hot (yes this was my only motivation to see the film, one smol pretty boy). And then we just decided at 11 am on the Saturday after it came out that we were gonna go watch it. At a theater 3 hours away. For a showing at 3 pm. It was worth it.

How would you rate the film?

10/10 would HIGHLY recommend. It's so good from the animation to the soundtrack to the plot to the character design,

Did you make any new friends through Promare?

Kinda yeah! Not super close friends, but my friend (that I already had lol) and I decided to make a discord server, and it was really fun for a while! But eventually it died down and now there's just a couple people in there who send memes every once in a while.

What made you want to watch Promare? What drew you in?

Lio Fotia being pretty. The only motivation I had to see the film.

Did your opinion on a character change over time?

Galo! I typically hate the dumbass protagonist thing, esp when like he was introduced and kinda came off pretty vain by like, acting as the center of attention lol. But by the middle of the movie I had changed my opinion on him pretty much entirely.

What is one of your favorite moments in the film?

thhhhheeee whole film,

No but actually I feel like the intro scene from the beginning of the film to when the Mad Burnish trio show up is a phenomenal scene in the movie that no one really talks about. The timing of the music, the animation, the sound design, the short introduction to the world and characters that was created so fluidly, like, it had me on the edge of my seat. Of course, I do like the following scene with the Mad Burnish just as much, but I feel like no one talks about the intro scene as much.

What is the worst moment in the film? How’d you want it to change?

uhh. uhhhhh. Oh no this is really hard. I know it's not a perfect piece, nothing is, but at the same time I don't dislike any part...? I guess maybe when Deus shows up. The dump of plot is kinda meh, also I feel like the poor animators had to rush that part out based on a lot of the choppiness of the walking animations and stuff. I'd like that scene to be a bit more fleshed out, really. Give Trigger a chance to work with it without feeling the rush of a deadline.

Who is your favorite character !?

Gueira!!! I cosplayed him in February (we actually had a whole Promare cosplay group) and even dyed my hair red bc of this man. I secretly want him and Meis to have their own little spinoff thing, because Trigger did tell us Gueira's backstory, so I kinda want them to tell us more about their characters. Especially since??? What character do you feel is under appreciated in the fandom?

Pretty much any character who isn't Galo or Lio. I feel like they're the only ones I see people talk about, with the occasional Aina or GueiMeis, but like that's it.

What character do you think deserved better in the film?

Ainaaaaaaaa oh my god. They built up such a weird character arc for her that got so tossed around? She really deserved so much better.

Any unpopular opinions on a character/moment/etc?

Because I see people very aggressive sometimes on Twitter about it, uh, people are allowed to like Kray even tho that's not the popular opinion. I wouldn't touch anything with him with a ten foot pole, but that doesn't mean I should tell people to hate him 😅

Your favorite pairings? Platonic or Romantic!

GaloLio (this is almost like a freebie) and GueiMeis for romantic. Aina and Galo platonic friendship and actually I wish more people would think about the absolute chaos Gueira and Lucia would cause together.

Kray and Galo probably. I just can't see Galo liking him. The only time I could see this like maybe working is if like, in a Foresight!Galo AU where Kray just kinda trains him to work for him. I'm also not a fan of the age gap.

A popular opinion in the fandom you just wish would go away?

uhhhhh that doing x thing they say is bad means you should be blocked by the entire fandom? 🙃 These are things I have seen, genuinely, on Twitter, and Promare is the only fandom I've seen do it and it's a yikes. It's not even like, actually bad things. I saw one like "this person is a Kray stan go block them" and I'm just;;; that seems a bit harsh.

Though the Twitter fandom has kind of died down recently, so I haven't seen much of that since like fall of last year.

A popular opinion in the fandom you can’t get enough of?

Gueira and Meis are Lio's dads now. They've adopted him.

But like I feel like it would be in like that friend way where it's like "yup we're your dads now" and then Lio lowkey hates it bc hes like "you're like 3 years older than me" and they're like "still your dads. You should respect your parents no matter our age."

Favorite AUs you’ve seen/heard of or your own?

I always love the ones that mess with Galo's role in the story. I love the Foresight!Galo AU idea, I love the swap AU where Lio is a firefighter and Galo is a Burnish, and I like this one AU I came up with but didn't do anything with where Galo's "burning firefighter soul" actually ended up being Promare and he turned into a Burnish mid fight with Lio.

Oh! And the fast food AUs. McDonald's Gueira, Hooter's Galo, and what I made up, Domino's Meis. McDonald's McGueira is an iconic visual novel for the ages and it will go down in history.

Would you want a sequel/prequel or any sort of extra story? And what about?

Gueira and Meis are married and that's why they can't officially tell us their last name bc it's the same and they can't spoil their wedding day to us just yet.

Would you/have you recommended Promare to anyone?

Oh absolutely! I have both already recommended it and would recommend it to people! The DVD came out recently, so if you can I totally recommend checking it out in either the original Japanese or the English dub! I haven't seen the dub personally, but I've heard it's good and actually a lot of Japanese fans prefer it even which is wild.

PROMARE REVIEW

I finally understand the hype… after so long of watching ppl have fun with knowing the Truth, I too, have gained the knowledge lmao. Yeah, I fucking watched PROMARE on Tuesday and fuck, I feel like I've changed as a human being. 

K so like all the viewings for PROMARE that were in theaters closest to me ended in late September. I thought I missed my chance but luckily, while looking for tickets for the Gorillaz movie in a theater far af from where I live, I found out PROMARE was playing the day before. The commute was absolute hell but holy shit, was it worth it. My theater was pretty good too, overall. No one was overly loud and only seemed to make a few squeals and such during some scenes (CPR lol…). It was packed tho, like almost every seat was full. I guess everyone heard the hype too!

PROMARE is by far the most fun anime movie I've ever seen tbh. It's packed full of wild, beautifully animated action scenes that had me like… actually tearing up it was so pretty lmao. The movement, ugh, was just gorgeous; flawless. The colours and art style really complemented each other so nothing looked wacky, like I feared was going to be the case in some areas. But no, it was all beautiful! The music too was so fitting for the style and definitely catchy as hell (Inferno has been playing in my head ever since). The character designs were unique and eye-catching with cool, vibrant colours and styles. My favourite honestly has to be Lucia Fex. I didn't expect to like her as much as I do, but oh man, she's so fun and quirky- I love her! She's got an interesting design (love her hair & teeth) and her sub voice is A+. Of course, Lio's Burnish armour design is the one I love second best just because of how badass it is (I mean… those knife shoes…).

In terms of actual plot and character interactions, I thought it was pretty solid. The plot was interesting and kept getting more and more wild until it was like yo, what the fuck lmao. Like, the huge dump of info at the end was ?!?! I really did like it though, it didn't feel like it was taking itself too seriously. Like, I thought they were gonna pull a "chosen one" trope on us but nope! They just so happened to be at the right place lmao, if they weren't then the world would've died. I liked that bit.

I thought Galo was a pretty good protagonist. He plays the Dumbass With a Heart of Gold protag very well, and although I found myself sometimes irked with him cuz those characters just aren't my type, it wasn't that bad. Mostly cuz literally every single character thought he was a dumbass and they made sure to point it out lmao. I liked his relationship with Crayfish Foreskin because yeah, it's pretty generic but it still hurt like a bitch when Galo found out the truth, so yeah, they did a good job. Speaking of that bastard, Crayfish Foreskin being the bad guy was very obvious, of course, and I'm so glad that that wasn't the actual plot twist. Him being a Burnish really did make me shook, like I wasn't expecting that at all (although I probably should've).

Lio and the Burnish's relationship was… fuck it was so, so good. He truly loves his team and they love him back. And Lio cares deeply for the Burnish. Seeing them sacrifice themselves for him made me weep like a fucking baby. God, their trio was great, I loved them.

My only criticism is that I wish there was more one on one bonding with Galo and the rest of the firefighters + Lio. While I understand that it doesn't really fit time wise and it would also take away the focus from all the action and plot, idk, it was a little hard to get emotionally invested in their relationship with Galo, especially with Lio. I felt like they could have benefited from one on one time together. However, yeah that would be more filler than anything because everything that was necessary was already in the movie and therefore would just drag it out if it was added. Still, can't help but feel like bonding moments were needed.

I uh, also feel the need to say that I was expecting way more Galo/Lio ship material lmao. Maybe that's partly why I feel the way I do. I guess tumblr got to me and I assumed from all the freaking out that Galo and Lio were implied to have a bit more going on. But… not really tbh. They had about as much ship material as Galo/Aina, which is not a compliant, I'm actually satisfied with that, cuz you know, ship freely and all that. It still won't stop me from shipping galolio like crazy, but yeah, I'm a little surprised with the lack ship material. BUT- Lio switching their names was the biggest power bottom move ever lmao & yes, I'm reading into it.

Overall, PROMARE was really fucking good and man, everyone needs to watch it.

-Mikayuu. Like, don’t get me wrong, I still personally love the pairing and enjoy chatting about it and making content for it, but I don’t trust the fandom as a whole with it anymore bc of the fucking top/bottom wars. I’m here for the emotional pairing, not some goddamned fetish. Only designated friend circles can be trusted to produce content that’s not wildly ooc or considered a blow in the ‘war’ so that’s where I’m staying, thanks.

-I know it doesn’t seem like it in-canon, but Galolio has a lot of potential to be super angsty imo. There’s no way Lio doesn’t have some PTSD or other deep problems buried under his skin from all the shit he experienced, and there’s a lot of potential for Galo to set that off by accident. He’s flameless and while he’s got VERY high emotional intelligence, there’s only so much you can do to stave off the storm. Eventually something is going to happen and Lio is going to have an episode, and Galo is going to have to find a way to help him through it without cutting into any wounds

11.  What is a character you can only imagine in one particular ship?

-Lio. He doesn’t strike me as being the type to seek out an emotional connection when there’s so much potential to lose it. Galo, as someone who’s practically fucking drift compatible with him, doesn’t really count as ‘seeking out an emotional connection’. They just kind of click together and by the time Lio realizes that he’s fallen for him and they’re acting like a couple, it’s way too late to back out. Sorry Lio, you have a husband now. No, you can’t take him back. You wouldn’t want to, anyways, he’s yours and you wouldn’t let him go even if you were given the option to

I am trying something different with my edits of having multiple quotes from multiple characters in different colors! I think that so far my experimenting has worked out really well in my favor as it has given me the opportunity to work with more than one character. Of course, when I was given the option to put more than one character into an edit I had to go with my favorite trio of flame users Lio, Meis, and Gueira aka The Mad Burnish from Promare. While there are more characters that were members of the terrorist organization these are the three that we spend the majority of the movie with.

From the second I saw the three of them in their battle armor I was in love with them and the way that they all carried themselves. Lio, being the leader was the brains behind the groups actions. But that didn't mean that Meis and Gueira couldn't handle themselves or even save their boss in times of trouble. My favorite moment with the three of them is when they are able to save Lio from being taken hostage by Vulcan and they stand up for their boss and launch him into a volcano, saving his life. Meis and Gueira would do anything to help Lio achieve his goals and to me that's what makes this trio so great.

Every time I watch this movie I'm roped into the store of the Burnish and I relate to their struggle of being misunderstood for most of your life. You continue to struggle against false conceptions that people think you're like when in reality you're the exact opposite of what they think. These three will stand by one another even if their ideas might get the other hurt. They will always have each others backs even if not much is known about their relationship.

While they aren't the central focus relationship wise, the bond between Lio, Gueira, and Meis is so unique and diverse that it continues to suck me in. It's one that is something entirely different from every other trio relationship that I've ever seen in media. I love all three of them so much! I'm just glad that my experimenting led me to finally making one for them all together.

A Look at the Anime Figures from Mega Hobby Expo Autumn 2019

Mega Hobby Expo – a figure showcase run by figure maker Megahouse – held its 2019 expo at UDX (think A-RISE’s school in Love Live! School Idol Project) in Akihabara on November 29. We sent our Japan Correspondent, Daryl Harding, down there to snap images of all the newest and coolest figures that’ll be coming in 2020!

      Mega Hobby Expo is the younger sibling to the huge Wonder Festival that I covered in August. The event is smaller in scale, in a tinier space, and is free to get into, unlike its larger sibling. Held at UDX in Akihabara, just above the Gundam Cafe and close to Akihabara Station, this is the perfect place to hold a figure event, especially as you could go into the shops in the next street and pre-order the figures on show. It’s my first time at Mega Hobby Expo, and I wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly impressed by the quaint showing from Megahouse and other figure makers in Japan.

  But enough but the area around Mega Hobby Expo, let’s look at some of the new (and some cool, older) figures that were on display!

    The first display I saw when I walked in was a history of One Piece figures. On display were Luffy figures ranging from 2004 to a figure being released in June 2020, including a female Luffy figure!

  Some of the One Piece figures were also shrunk down to a smaller size alongside Dragon Ball Super figures for a tiny line of highly detailed figures that have a cheaper price point than they’re full-sized counterparts.

    There were a few series that had a bunch of figures coming out from all of the companies seen all over the show floor. The biggest series was the smash-hit TV anime series (and best selling manga series of the year), Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

    With the hype of the upcoming film in everyone’s mind, I’m not surprised to see the series represented all over, including this prototype of a figure of Giyu Tomioka in a fighting stance.

    I was able to see for myself how cute the small Inosuke palm-sized figure was after reporting about it earlier this week. Next to him was the Nezuko figure who, in my opinion, was much cuter. I know, I know, controversial opinion…

      What was interesting was that behind them were prototypes of palm-sized versions of Zenitsu and Tanjiro! Collecting the entire set means you get the whole team, in the palm of your hand! Both of them seem to be releasing sometime in 2020, so look out for them!

      Zenitsu and Inosuke are also getting there own ChimiMega Buddy Figure versions that come in a set of 2. As you can see behind them, Tanjiro and Nezuko already have their own painted versions, but the new set of the two lovable characters will be out sometime in 2020 and will be painted of course.

    Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Zenitsu are also getting their own action-based figures from the ARTFX J line from Kotobukiya.

    All three of them look great. Looking closely at them, the details on their hair and clothes are high quality, as is the pose the sculptor chose. I especially love the veins in Nezuko’s head. So subtle, but makes the figure stand out. The figures come out every month from April and can be pre-ordered at the Crunchyroll Store, starting with Tanjiro, then Nezuko in May, and finally Zenitsu in June.

        Aniplex has its own versions of the trio in their area, with Tanjiro in a water breathing pose, Nezuko looking adorable, and Zenitsu, looking scared. Tanjiro is already out in Japan and pre-orderable through the Crunchyroll Store for a June 2020 release, with the other two being released on December 22, just in time for Christmas!

        In March, the 2nd volume of Demon Slayer keychains are being released. MegaHouse displayed the entire collection, making me want to spend all my money getting every single one because they’re all perfect.

    The final piece of Demon Slayer merch found at Mega Hobby was these soft, stress ball-like, heads. I don’t know much I’d like squeezing Nezuko if I’m annoyed, but they make for a great bento stuffer!

    Speaking about Christmas, this figure of Kurisu and Mayuri from Steins;Gate makes me wish I could go for a Kurisu-mas party at the Future Gadget Lab. Both of the figures were adorable, even with Huke’s eyes recreated.

    Just in time of the holidays was this set up of Shonen Jump characters in both Autumn and Winter setups—not that Tokyo really got much of autumn this year. Personally, the cutest part of the display is Gintoki from Gintama in his little Santa hat!

    Keeping with the Shonen Jump theme, Bleach was out in full force at the Expo with a new figure of Tier Harribel that has been decided—release date undecided—and an older Hiyori Sarugaki from Alpha x Omega for reference.

      Announced during the show was a new figure for Grimjaw from MegaHouse. The below image is of the prototype of the final figure, without any paint. It’s scheduled to be released sometime in 2020.

    One of the best displays was the Nyaruto display. While all the figures have been announced before (and are available to pre-order at the Crunchyroll Store), seeing them all together was adorable!

        Lio Fotia from PROMARE, the blazing anime film that took the world by storm in 2019, is getting their own figure that is being released in June 2020 and up for pre-order at the Crunchyroll Store. While the figure is currently in the prototype stage, I can't help but be drawn into their eyes.

    Also in June 2020, Coco from the popular manga series Atelier of Witch Hat is getting her own amazing looking figure from Kotobukiya. It was one of the best looking figures at the expo in its own display case on top of books that read “sample text” and “yout text here.”

    Even though the release date is undecided, Alpha x Omega showed off the Nekomimi version of Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, which was unbelievable to see.

    Another version of Rem from KDcolle, this time in her kimono version, was shown off it all of its traditional Japanese goodness. The figure is only available by advanced reservation at the moment.

    One figure I didn’t expect see made, though it was obvious that it was going to happen, was the Super Peace Busters Premium Box featuring Menma from Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Jun Naruse from The Anthem of the Heart, and Aoi Aioi from Her Blue Sky (you can read my review of the film here) all making music together in a beautiful pose. The figure is currently under reservation from Aniplex in Japan.
