THE PRINCESS SWAP

Derya

This is a special case and not only because Clarke doesn't have a canon surname: the top row of face options are described in the asset files as "Middle Eastern" and the bottom row are described as "Caucasian". Caucasian is used in the U.S. interchangeably with "white" even though the Caucasus region is in east Europe/west Asia and can be interpreted to encompass parts of Turkey.

Clarke's family members (including parents of both face options) all have Turkish names and if I’m remembering correctly, it’s heavily implied in the text and art that their country is based on Turkey. Which makes the name Clarke really confounding. I wanted to replace it with a Turkish name but I couldn’t find anything that sounded remotely similar. So I chose the unisex name Derya because I like how it sounds!!!!!

Devin Rhee

These face options are described in the asset files as “Asian”. The masc face option’s haircut leaves me no choice but to headcanon him (and by extension the fem face option) as Korean. What the extremely common Korean surname Rhee lacks in being spelled similar to Wright, it makes up for in sounding kinda like Wright. If you were hearing it spoken from another room. Lmao

QUEEN B

Ian Wang / Ina Wang

These face options are described in the asset files as “Asian”. As discussed in Part 1, there are not a lot of sound matches in Asian languages or Spanish for King(sley). I did read a theory online that this LI’s name comes from the fact that they’re the counterpart to the MC who is the titular queen of the series, so I went with the thematic route and chose the surname Wang, which means “king” in Chinese and Korean. The fem face option reminds me of several Korean women I know so I headcanon these face options as Korean, although Wang is a rare surname in Korea whereas it is one of the most common (if not thee most common?) surnames in China. So I guess they could also be Chinese?

Ian Reyes / Ina Reyes

These face options are described in the asset files as “Hispanic”. Same as above, not too many Spanish sound matches, king/queen themes and motifs, etc., so I chose the Spanish surname Reyes which means “kings”.

ROOMMATES WITH BENEFITS

Drew Yáñez

This one was so hard lmao. These face options are described in the asset files as "Hispanic" and there were not a lot of Spanish-language surnames that are a sound match for Young.

Also a hard one! These face options are described in the asset files as "Asian" which is really broad, and they don't look "typically" East Asian to me or like any East Asian person I know. The masc one reminds me of someone I know who's Filipino so I'm going with that for my headcanon. Again not a lot of sound matches for Young just like in general, and I decided on the Ilocano surname Yadao because it was one of the only Filipino surnames I could find that started with a Y.

SHIP OF DREAMS

Theodore Kassavetis / Theodora Kassavetis

These face options are described in the asset files as "Mediterranean", although the wiki does note that there's a scene where they say they're Greek. So I initially decided on the Greek surname Karakostas since it kept the "K-AR-T" sound pattern from Carter but then I changed my mind and gave them the surname Kassavetis because I like John Cassavetes the Greek-American director.

Reagan Tong

These face options are described in the asset files as "Asian". The "th" sound in Thorne that's found in very few other languages like come on now don't piss me off. These face options honestly give Vietnamese to me but I couldn't find any Vietnamese surnames that matched Thorne and the Cantonese surname Tong sounded closer in my opinion.

UNBRIDLED

Ryder Villanueva

The face option on the left is described in the asset files as "Hispanic", and the one on the right is described as "Filipino". A unique situation here as many people in the Philippines have Spanish-language surnames and some speak Spanish due to Spain's historical colonization of the Philippines, meaning "Hispanic" can sometimes apply to Filipinos. We're touching on a complicated issue of using "Hispanic" as an ethnic descriptor but this post is not the place to discuss that. Sooooo since Spanish does not traditionally use the letter W (?) there aren't any Spanish-language surnames starting with W, and the only surname from a Filipino language starting with W that I cound find was Wenceslao which I didn't think was a good match for Wilson. So we're going with the Spanish Villanueva which has the initial "il" sound . Also means "new house" which I think is thematically appropriate for this book? Idk I don't have VIP so I can't play it yet and I just read the summary.

So, I finished another book that was forgotten on my game, and I have to say it: I was one of the people who was against this book when it first came out and we learned the plot was about a relationship between a student and a professor, (just for the record I'm still against this kind of relationship), but a big shout out to PB that made an exceptional LI, like they hadn't made for so long! And they actually built their relationship along the chapters in a way that it wasn't forgotten how wrong it was, but they fought to be together against all the odds. AND here I am already missing this man of pixels 🤡🤡🤡

Thank you for assuring me I'm not the only one finding QB problematic (I hate it), Zoey sidelined and the "human sacrifice) (I didn't romance anyone bc Carter is the only one I'd romance but I picked two diamond choices for Zoey) the whole dating a professor (even though I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the male sprite but I'd rather lose my progress than romancing a TEACHER), Book 2 being about saving Kingsleys' (Ian/Ina) asses despite THEY'RE ADULT plus Poppy being uwuified at some points despite her acts are just not it which Chelsea the writer stated

Yes all of this!! Like it was a fun book to read but it was definitely problematic (which isn’t saying much since many of PB’s books are). I agree Carter should’ve been made an LI! It really does feel like they had originally planned for it to be a single LI book but added Zoey last minute since they didn’t want backlash about the student-teacher relationship

Also yes book 2 being about saving Ian/Ina despite the fact that they’re a grown ass adult while the MC is still at uni. Yeah the uwufication of Poppy I truly did hate especially because she was an adult who made terrible choices and was overall an incredibly shitty person who shouldn’t have been infantilized

I’m so glad you agree with me on this! Like I love QB for Zoey because she was the first female LI I ever romanced so she has a special place in my heart but the book definitely had some major issues

Kingsley deserved better (rant from reddit)

Despite not being a part of Choices' steamy saga, Queen B is a sexy book that had good dialogue and occasional comedy, allowing for a shallow but enjoyable MC who wanted to be popular--whether they were nice or cruel is up to you. But this attitude decision has no bearing on how you treat Ian/Ina Kingsley.

Originally meeting them at a bar and having a nice hookup session, you soon find out that they're your professor at your new college, and they quickly throw on the metaphorical chastity belt in order to make it clear that what happened earlier can't happen again. Despite the brief encounter, MC is determined to continue the relationship with the hottest professor at the college, even blackmailing their TA (who was doing some shady things herself) and taking her place.

At this point, the professor got weak in the knees and gave in, though jumping back and forth between being horny and practical. Professor Kingsley is weary about this relationship--as they should be--to which MC aggressively states "you KNOW I don't want to ruin your career. How could you say that?!" However, Kingsley clarifies that they're actually worried about MC and their standing at the college. They haven't had a lot of romantic moments that were non-sexual, so I'm gonna guess Kingsley is someone who's quick to catch feelings; unsurprising, given that they're dodging thirsty people left and right and want to be valued as a person rather than that fine booty everyone wants to pounce on (even if Queen B 2 retconned that and said they "lacked volume").

But MC wasn't really the person to do this with. Eventually she breaks Kingsley down, be it as a friend or a lover, and mean girl Poppy blackmails you with evidence that you guys could be something more than teacher and student. Kinda sucks, because even if you just wanted to be friends, you're still blackmailed. In order to prevent Kingsley from their fears being confirmed, you avoid them and tell them nothing. Up to this point, it's pretty much Professor groaning and moaning about how they need MC, and it's almost like we're watching the objectification take root in them, that they're willing to become a bimbo/himbo because they finally found someone they liked, but that someone was mainly into their body.

So MC gets angry when Kingsley goes to see them publicly (even though she should've been more honest, even if it meant terminating the relationship. Way to be selfish, MC!), and it makes Kingsley look bad like MC was in the right. Eventually rumors circulate, and Kingsley decides they'll risk their career and begin privately dating MC.

Come QB2, they're essentially comfortable with being a private booty call, though eventually they are let go and a new enemy makes you think they were just using you for research on the absurd hierarchy on the college, which Kingsley apologizes for. Honestly if I were Kingsley, I'd be done with MC, but the fact that a scorned flame helps get Kingsley fired, it essentially has them running back into MC's arms.

That's most of it, but I'm pretty sad that the appeal of this (much like the Nanny Affair) is that it's supposed to be risky, though as we see in the story, it's the LI who takes the biggest hit, and they pick themselves up and say "I'll get another job. You still want me, right?" The amount of disrespect MC did to Professor Kingsley knows no bounds. He was the only male LI in the game, so I hoped his romance would be more emotional, but it almost felt like MC was emotionally manipulating them at times and the relationship felt mainly sexual. I'd rather have Carter as an LI with Kingsley as a sexual option (at least then no feelings would be hurt). Sorry for the spiel!
