caitlin, do you really think there's a chance of riderquill being canon? im getting excited with the idea, but im afraid too :/

i get this. marvel definitely merits a healthy amount of skepticism with respect to actually portraying explicitly canon queer relationships, especially concerning higher profile characters/those with connections to the mcu, and that combined with having been burned by these kinds of things before, i'm approaching this with a degree of caution, too.

that being said, i do think there's a real chance we're going to get canon riderquill, and a lot of story signs point that way and wouldn't make sense to point in another direction; a lot of the way the panels are framed are very romantic in nature, and rich's and peter's stories are sort of running in parallel like those of romantic leads would. (i'm also about 95% convinced that they are the "lovers" on the tarot card, because not much else would make sense.) furthermore, al ewing isn't shying away from writing explicitly canon queer people; he was one of the co-writers on empyre (which ended in billy and teddy's big space wedding), and in the current gotg run has storylines exploring phyla/heather and noh-varr/hercules (the latter of which he himself brought together).

i'm trying to temper my own expectations so i don't happen to get disappointed, but i think there's a real chance — and if anyone's gonna give it to us, it's ewing.

emperor hulking and empyre #2 are excellent and im so excited to see everyone’s reaction lmao.

i love emypre its so fresh and it uses marvel’s existing lore so well and does such new, interesting things with it. and it uses underutilized characters like the YA. im loving it.

i want to be excited about empyre but im just now realizing how much i care about these characters, i grew up with them and wow im so not ready for the drama & emotions

I can relate— I live in a constant state of apprehension when it comes to comics. My favorite characters are all easy to misinterpret and prone to offensive representation, and given the way cape comics work, there’s always going to be a bad run. You can’t avoid it.

I will say that I am, so far, enjoying the Teddy and Billy stuff, Teddy especially. He deserves his time in the spotlight, and I think Ewing, Oliviera, et al have stayed faithful to his characterization. Time will only tell how this ends, especially as it expands to include more crossovers and spin-offs. I will say, I don’t love Tini Howard’s Billy so I’m not particularly looking forward to Strikeforce.
