Victims of the Childbed - Queen Hyeondeok of the Kwon Clan

      Queen Hyeondeok belonged to the ancient Andong Kwon Clan. Her father, Kwon Jeon, was probably a higher-up in the government of King Sejong the Great of Joseon in what is present-day Korea.

       Korean rulers followed a harem system somewhat similar to that of their Chinese counterparts to ensure the production of heirs. The king and his sons had multiple concubines of varying rank, but one acknowledged wife as queen or princess. It was always potentially advantageous for a family to have a daughter in this system, as there was a chance she might bear a son and increase their influence at court. Hyeondeok, then called Lady Kwon, was sent to the court of King Sejong in 1431 as one of several consorts to his heir, the Crown Prince Yi Hyang of Joseon. At this time she was thirteen years old and the Crown Prince was seventeen. Within two years, she had borne a short-lived daughter.

       The Crown Princess, Royal Noble Consort Sun, was childless and grew jealous of Hyeondeok when she again fell pregnant in 1435. But Crown Princess Sun was soon banished from court for several breaches of etiquette and sleeping with her maid. After this, Hyeondeok became the Prince’s chief consort and was elevated to the rank of Royal Noble Consort Kwon.

       Hyeondeok was made chief consort because she had given Yi Hyang his only healthy child, Princess Gyeonghye, in 1436. It was the Crown Prince’s duty to father a male heir but at this point he had failed to do so with any of his consorts. In August of 1441, Hyeondeok fulfilled her greatest duty and gave birth to the Crown Prince’s first son, Hong-wi. There were huge celebrations for the prince’s birth, but Hyeondeok was unable to reap the rewards of her triumph. She died a day later from the effects of the birth and was posthumously bestowed the title of Crown Princess. Yi Hyang succeeded his father as King Munjong of Joseon in 1450, but died just two years later. Hyeondeok’s son ascended the throne at the age of twelve as King Danjong. His older sister Gyeonghye acted as his guardian. Danjong was deposed by his uncle and sent into exile, where he was later murdered. One of his few actions as king was to grant his mother the full posthumous title and name of Queen Inhyo Sunhye Hyeondeok.
