2022 Writing Evaluation

hi i dug this up from the archives of this time last year because it was fun to do and i wanted to give other writers a chance to reflect if they’re so inclined! so here is my 2022 writing self-evaluation. point of order, i’m mostly filling this out specifically for my bellawritess ao3 and all the rpf stuff i write, not my other secret ao3 where i put fics written about fictional media. okay, onward. 

1. number of stories posted on ao3: 23!

2. word count posted for this year: 117,763

3. fandoms i wrote for: 5sos, atl, and 1d (but also teen wolf, mcu spiderman, hawkeye, and daredevil)

4. pairings: cake, lashton, malum, jalex, narry, halex (you know that very popular harry styles/alex gaskarth ship), and mirry.

5. story with the most kudos/bookmarks/comments: the answer to all three of these criteria is a change of heart and a silver lining, my winter 2021-22 fic exchange fic, which makes me very happy. i cannot believe that fic was from last year, january feels like forever ago but i love love love that specific work so much, in large part because of how much i was able to tailor it to meg as reciprocation for all the times and ways she tailored things to me.

6. work i’m most proud of (and why): i’m gonna say a three-way tie between (1) i got a radar for trouble (and you’re a renegade), (2) between all the gasping i finally breathe, and (3) play it again and again and again. #1 is the cruel summer prequel fic that i always half-jokingly said i would one day write and then surprised myself by actually writing, and i am incredibly proud of how well i managed to recreate the vibes of cruel summer fic but also write a prequel that made sense with the direction the actual cruel summer story took. #2 was one of the first legit fics i wrote to break myself out of this big 5sos fic slump i had been in (consequence of a perfect storm of a lot of small things), and i may have gotten lost in the metaphor sauce but i maintain that the metaphors are really fucking good which was gratifying to me as a writer who had felt like maybe i’d lost my real writing skill before then. #3 is the christmas fic i wrote for hazel, and what i’m most proud of there is that i fuckin actually wrote that. my love for my friends carried me through the warfields of attempting to romanticize christmas, and in so doing i think i actually learned something about christmas, ugh i feel like i’m getting less jewish every second i spend talking about this but i really am proud of myself for writing that and even moreso because i think i tailored it pretty well to hazel’s taste and that made me happy. it was like an extra challenge i set myself and then i did it well.

7. work i’m least proud of (and why): pretty much all the prompt fics from this year’s batch, tbh. this malum roommates one is really funny if you imagine you’re a fly on the wall of mine and megs’s dorm room but it’s the most nothing fic on the planet otherwise, and you’re my whole house is cute but again, literally nothing. unfortunately these were written while i was binge watching seinfeld which probably contributed to how much they were About Nothing but that’s no excuse.

8. share or describe a favorite review you received: i’m super terrible at remembering comments and stuff that people leave me but a few days ago i got a comment on yssdf saying it was one of the best love stories they’d ever read and that just about knocked my socks off

9. a time when writing was really, really hard: from aboutttt february to september, which is pretty obvious when you notice that i didn’t post a fic (on this account) between march 18th and september 27th of this year. i hit that aforementioned slump in a big way and i was also busy with life stuff and i was also just. unmotivated and uninspired! but in that time i wasn’t really doing a lot of writing to struggle with. something that was actively hard to write was definitely parts of the jet lag songfic i wrote for the fest. megs and hazel both experienced various aspects of my intense battle with Plot and Characters. it was not pretty.

10. a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: luke in the muke college beach fic!!! he was so much more gutsy than (a) he’s usually written and (b) i expected him to be. and tbh, michael in that fic also kind of surprised me, although less so because he was based on a real guy i know, so it was more like trying to delve into the fictionalized mind of a real human being i go to school with and understand what it is that makes him only APPEAR to be an asshole and in reality maybe actually have a heart of gold. if that makes sense. character work but the character is based on a real person who is based on a real person. meta af.

11. a favorite excerpt of your writing: ill be the first to admit im a sucker for when there’s a song playing in the in-universe fic scene and then the lyrics tie into the moment. i have that in two fics that i can think of, so here they both are:

(1) from everywhere, everything:

Luke is trembling when he looks up at Ashton, but he only nods. Tilts their foreheads together.

Say it’s me that you’ll adore— Sinatra sings, and then there’s a scratch and a crack, and the whole record player crashes through the glass tabletop.

(the end of that lyric is “for now and evermore” !!!! HOW FUCKED IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(2) from faith in a stolen car (the jean jacket songfic i just wrote for the fest):

Calum’s rumbling laugh shook both of them as Springsteen vowed I’ll love you with all the madness in my soul, and Ashton sang along in a silly voice so Calum knew he meant it with everything he had.

He turned up the music, and ‘No Surrender’ blared out of the surround sound. The lines that had been stampeding around Ashton’s brain since Calum had first swept him up in tonight’s teenage delinquency now screamed against the wind in his ears.

Ashton smiled wider than his face could handle and screamed right back.

“WE MADE A PROMISE WE SWORE WE’D ALWAYS REMEMBER,” Calum’s voice joined his, and together they beat back the deafening gales; “NO RETREAT, BABY, NO SURRENDER!”

12. how did you grow as a writer this year? this year i learned the importance of conflict. “hey bella, didn’t you learn that in seventh grade english?” YES but then i IGNORED it and now i have relearned it in a fanfiction context and in the broader sense that i now understand every story has a conflict and more than that, a story needs a conflict, because that’s what drives it. after i finished writing those prompt fics, i thought, damn, these are fun but nothing is fucking happening in any of them. i wonder why that is! and then i realized. there was no conflict. i was writing “scenes” but nothing interesting within those scenes, so there was nothing pulling the characters from point A (the start of the scene) to point B (its conclusion) and as a result they all became meandering blocks of text with no goal or direction. anyway. point being that i have embraced conflict as a necessary factor in storytelling and i hope this will mean no more seinfeldian fics, prompt or otherwise.

13. how do you hope to grow next year? yes <3 jk but i sincerely have no idea, i don’t have any current ideas on how i plan to grow next year i just very much intend to grow. how it happens is anyone’s guess

14. who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc)? gotta be a tie between megs @igarbagecannoteven and hazel @allsassnoclass. obviously megs is my #1 rubber duck roomie, whether she likes it or not, and she has helped me solve more problems than i am comfortable admitting. actually i’m very comfortable admitting it megs has untangled a myriad of fic knots on many occasions this year she is the best rubber duck in the world. and hazel has become my virtual rubber duck which is great because it means i have all my bases covered! truly these two are a dynamic duo because they will both just let me sit there and complain and yet always have the right thing to say.

15. anything from your real life show up in your writing this year? as always, a great many things. make the same mistakes ‘til the morning breaks and the muke college beach fic are both inspired by things that happened with this one guy i know from school (yes, the same guy, and yes, he is represented by michael both times, and no, i do not know why it happened like that). the latter came from just a single snap i saw on his snap story, and none of the fic is actually based on real events, but the former is HEAVILY based on real events between this guy and one of my good friends at school. lmao! 

i’ve been wishing i could breathe underwater is based on my experience scuba diving, which is to say, pure unmitigated terror, 1/10, do not recommend except to say that you did it. tequila shots from the dark scene of the crime is chock-full of baseball talk, specifically about Worst Team In Baseball the Washington Nationals (affectionate), so those feelings are straight from my heart. the concept of tell me what to see has not happened to me but it was very much inspired by my experience of getting in the habit of working out and realizing your muscles are literally increasing in size. the christmas fic has all my jewish disdain for christmas. that’s the shortlist, i think!

16. any new wisdom you can share with other writers? honestly, nope! i think other writers are thriving on their own fic journeys, as i am on mine. you guys seem to have a handle on things. i can reiterate my vehement loathing of comma splices or otherwise incorrectly-placed commas, but other than that i don’t have much to offer in the way of wisdom.

17. any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year? yes!! i am really excited to (hopefully) finish this fic ive been intermittently writing that is based on back together by tss. well, actually it’s based on the specific energy that was created in the world when back together and 2011 were released on the same night. it’s a tss!5sos au. it’s going to be really good okay. it’s tasty. and as always i hope to finish summer camp au i am dead fucking set on finishing that fic there is no question in my mind that it will be completed someday sooner rather than later i hope but definitely eventually. aside from those, i can’t think of any other fic plans i have! just gonna see where the winds of fic fate take me.

Second gif, imagine they both are at some sort of vacation or Kate’s doing a business trip somewhere and since it was one of the very few days Yelena actually had free they went there together. Imagine Kate has to make a video conference with the company or whatever and she’s trying to get things done when SUDDENLY Yelena comes into her view wearing just one of Kate’s button up shirts.

Kate is away with Yelena at one of her science conferences. Yelena had a two day thing and they'd made a week out of it. Randomly in the middle of the night Kate sees a STRING of notifications on her phone. Her partners are like "dude we have a last minute meeting with our biggest client and you're their favorite person. You HAVE to log on." And Kate is like "??? Im literally in the opposite time zone. It's the middle of the night here. You're lucky I even saw this???" But they're like..."On the call. In ten minutes. Non negotiable." Mind you Yelena just fucked Kate limp for like six hours and she's DEAD. She randomly woke up to pee after they passed out and happened to catch the messages. She's like "FUCK MY LIFEEEEEEE" but she sneaks out of bed and leaves her very naked Bae sleeping soundly. She throws a sweater and her glasses on, pops her headphones in, sits on the airbnb living room couch, and logs on.

The entire client board of this client is sitting with Kate and her partners. Kate is killing the lip service game.

Meanwhile in the bedroom Yelena wakes up cuz Kate is loud as shit. Always. She looks at the clock and it's like 3:20am and she's like "What the fuck is wrong with this bitch??? What is she doing???!!!". She wasn't even gonna throw clothes on but it was lowkey cold so she just grabbed Kate's shirt from the floor on the way out the room. She's not wearing anything under it tho so...even though Kate is way taller, her ass is catching the breeze and tits are free balling as she walks into the living room.

I could see it going two ways:

1) The couch faces away from the hallway Yelena is walking out from so with Kate's computer resting on the coffee table and that means the moment Yelena turns the corner of the hallway she's in prime view of the camera. She's basically like "Kate...wtf...did I not fuck you into sleep enough? What are you doing?"

And Kate sees her pretty much naked wife in the background of her call and like whips around basically giving her the "ABORTTTTT MISSION" look to stop her from walking even closer but Yelena - poor mostly asleep Yelena - doesn't get the hint. She just keeps walking closer. Shirt isn't buttoned. Every time she takes a step it shifts and she's just rambling about how is it even possible for Kate to still be this loud after she had her screaming for hours and Kate...Kate who doesn't really see any other viable alternative just like...slams her computer shut mid sentence.

Now Yelena is even more confused. But then she gets to the couch and sees Kate's "OH NO!" face while she's wearing her glasses, a sweater, and headphones sitting across from her computer. Yelena gets all 😳😨😳 and is like "Were you on..." And Kate is like "YUP". And Yelena is like "Did I..." And Kate once again is like "YES" and Yelena is like "Did they..." And Kate is like "VERY MUCH SO".

2) The couch is actually facing towards the hallway Yelena is walking out of so she clocks that Kate is on a call right away and instead of being like "Oh shit sorry..." and slink back into the room she's like *eyebrow raise* "You're working on vacation? In the middle of the night? And after you gave me so much shit when I even looked at my work email two days ago but now you leave me in bed alone to do...whatever this is??? Alright..."

So Yelena drops the shirt, sits on one of the two chairs opposite the couch, and starts doing FILTHYYYYYYY shit to herself. Absolutely not even in the same universe as PG. And poor Kate is trying SO HARD to concentrate but her girl is literally fucking herself two feet away so...how can she??? After like five minutes Kate realizes she's not built with that much self control and she's like "SORRY WIFI ISSUES GOTTA GO BYEEEEEEE" and slams the laptop shut. And the look of pride on Yelena's face...so fucking smug

i hate wanting to be productive in the middle of the night. i was tired all day tdy, and now i just want to do something productive. no!!! i work earlier than usual tomorrow!!!!

im doing my skincare now... i wore makeup tdy so i have no choice but to do it 🤯

im tired still but i dont want to sleep. i feel like i havent been productive enough tdy even though i went to 3 different appointments and within the 2 hours before work i cleaned my bathroom sink (that was incredibly disgusting, i am not exaggerating. no one has cleaned it in like a little over a year. my dad shaves his face there whenever it gets like 5 inches long and doesnt clean the hair out of the sink/on the counter. its gross.), made ramen (it wasnt v good).... at work i walked around almost the whole 6 hours. my feet hurt so!! bad!! after i work. it happens every time. it doesnt help that when i fell down my stairs, my "sprained" foot didnt heal properly. i also hurt my hand at work and have not seen a doctor .... im ngl im like a mess and if i tell anyone abt this theyll tell me its because im fat and need to lose weight WE GET IT. I KNOW. IM TRYING, AND JUST BECAUSE I AM DOESNT MEAN THAT I CANT HAVE SMTH WRONG WITH ME?????

im tired. like mentally and physically. i had counseling tdy and i told her everything and the time still wasnt full. she shared some things abt her life recently... still didnt fill the time. she didnt respond much at all, but she's grieving, so i understand

im not telling anyone except u and my digital diary about my situation with my ex... i need to stop complaining to people abt him and making it everyones problem when its really my fault i keep letting him back in my life. its bad! ive literally had dreams where he did that *thing* but like in an extremely worse way, and i told myself that i just had to live with it, that i have to get used to it. and, i mean, i guess i do... if i can *** ***** then he can do whatever.

im not even with him... just flirting heavily. he picks up on it, i think so, anyway....

idk why it pisses me off so bad but when b says shes ugly it makes me so angry. "why cant i be like the pretty girls?" she is the definition of a pretty girl... she may not see it because people were mean to her growing up but its like... ive cried SO much because of how pretty she is. my parents call her the pretty girl, people at school say shes pretty all the time... it just makes me so upset that someone as pretty as her cant see it. and i wish she could, honestly.

and i hate that this makes me so angry. i have so much envy that it rips me apart every second of the day, and i hate it!!!!! im the fat, ugly friend, and i always felt bad for her being friends with me. she says that im one of the prettiest ppl she knows.... if that were true, would she have deleted all the photos of me off of her phone? who knows. and the fact that people compliment her all the time at school and in public should say A LOT about how pretty she is. it happens all the time! and i mean all the time. maybe she doesnt think it was genuine or she forgets? idk... i think the last time a stranger complimented my appearance was a year and a half ago at a taco bell drive thru. the last time i was called pretty (besides when my mom says it) was at leastt 6 months ago. im like distraught because she is literally so beautiful fuck

it is currently 1:52am and i am very sleep deprived. and when i’m sleeping deprived i do stupid shit. so i’ve decided to update you on the fanfic im writing.

1:52am - 28 out of 56 lines, a total of 1014 words, and i have not mentioned the main love interest’s name once.

1:57am - i just remembered i have like 17 math assignments due today at midnight(not the one that just happened but the new one) will i do them? that’s a great question

2:03am - better than revenge just played on the album and i’m seriously considering writing another fic based on this song(i really love fleur but this fic sure won’t)

2:07am - just realized i should probably be working on edelweiss instead of something new

2:32am - writer’s block is very fun

3:07am - finally got out of the writers block. same number of lines, 1087 words total. still haven’t mentioned his name but you can almost tell who he is now.

3:09am - i feel like these two lines really sum up the fic: “my wet socks feel weird against the stage floor.” and “she dances and everything melts away.” very weird i know

3:15am - why the fuck does bill’s “bill as a prefect” photo on the wiki look like he just got done with a line

3:17am - currently debating whether or not i should make this an x reader or keep it as an oregon fic

3:20am - I THOUGHT THAT MC SAID SOMETHING MEMORABLE WHEN THEY MET HIM BUT NO IT WAS LITERALLY JUST “Did you get my owl?” LIKE WHAT THE FUCK MC YOURE MEETING SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO AND THE FIRST THINNG YOU SAY IS DID YOU GET MY OWL WHAT

3:41am - listening to taylor swift’s fearless album while i try to write this and mine and dear john just came on and fuuuuuuuck i wanna write an mc x ben fic

3:56am - 1161 words, same number of lines. he hates me, she hates me trope go brrrrrrrr

4:02am - 1205 words in total, 32 lines

4:09am - 1243 words, same number of lines, “if only i could talk to him. maybe things would get better.” “if only i could talk to her. maybe things would get better.” haha mutual pining go brrrrrr

4:24am - i have just realized that i may be projecting onto chiara

4:37am - word count has reached 1354, 35 out of 56 lines so far, ““““““““unrequited””””””””(mutual) pining has reached its peak

5:23am - 1581 words so far, 43 lines, the happy ending is getting closer lol

5:27am - word count is now at 1672 and the lines are now at 50! only 6 more to go but there’s still so much story left

5:32am - legit almost done with the story and you def know who the love interest is but his name has still not been mentioned once

5:36am - 1779 words in total, 56 out of 56 lines. story isn’t done yet though :/ one more scene to go

5:41am - the main love interest’s name has been mentioned

5:46am - kisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskisskiss

5:52am - done! the grand total coming to 56 lines, and 1952 words! should be published in the next ten hours.

I’m going through these one by one, and let me just say, you’re really teasing this mysterious love interest. Who are they, who are theyyy I must know! 

You should do your assignments! Trust me, I know well the pain of trying to drag oneself though math, but it will only pile up more if you ignore it. That is also a type of pain I know well. 

“I really love [Character] but this fic sure won’t.” Boy if that isn’t a whole ass writing mood right there. 

Writer’s Block is the worst kind of block. I always envision it as a gigantic alphabet block standing in my way. Don’t ask why. 

Those lines aren’t weird at all, they’re quite beautiful! You have a writer’s voice and those two lines alone prove it, so there. 

The question of this being Oregon vs “x Reader” comes down to how much of Oregon originates from you. Example, Gail Fawley is about 25% me. Luca is more like 90%. 

Ahh, but MC doesn’t look up to Bill though! To be specific, they’ve “never heard of him.” I see you Jam City, I see you going for that comedic irony. Doesn’t make sense, since Charlie is in their year, but oh well. It’s Rowan who idolizes Bill.

The more lines you pump out the more I am reminded that I need to work on my own fic. There is no excuse for Ch 12 taking this long. Well, I guess, holidays. But that’s about it. 

You are making me very much want to know who the love interest is. Is it Bill? Charlie? Oh, I crave the knowledge!

Arya chew on her lip as she read over his name. His apology. His casual confession of love. And she beamed.

Bran wheeled up to the stage, a few stares and whispers as one of the wheels caught on the last step. In the end, the manager of the club and a few bystanders had to help him. It wasn’t embarrassing, just a little awkward to have three grown men fondling his chair and not him. 

He had invited Arya, who happened to bring along Gendry - funny how her security followed her absolutely everywhere, but Bran wasn’t. He thought it may have been some ableist crap, but when he saw Arya’s hand on his wrist as Bran edged towards the mic it was clear what the real reason was. Also the hickey on his neck was a dead give away. 

Bran cleared his throat and Arya and Gendry stopped speaking. The open mic night was his idea. Bran had worked up this plan for a while, knowing full well he could get away with it - but now he was here, and only confidence and determination ran through him. Chaos wheeling - if you will. He took a breath, then spoke into the mic. 

“I’m a theology major, I can take confession, even with this wheelchair condition. My legs stopped working when the car flipped, now it seems like I’m the one that’s dicked. I make light of the frame that holds me, even when it’s the thing that has made me lonely. I smile and wave, even when no one thinks I’m gay. The wheels tend to avert the eyes, even when I wanna talk to guys. I hear sympathy from women across the world, but I can still make your world whirl. I don’t wanna talk about how the chair feels or what kind of drink I want with my meal - I’m a grown ass man, a man that just can’t stand. I’m filled with love and wanting, and I’m a fun guy that deserves some flaunting. I’m a theology major, I can take confession. And yes, to answer your question, my dick does work, and I have a suggestion. Either mind your business, apologise for the transgression. Or date me, I can still fuck, no repression, in succession, with or without discretion.”

When everyone was roaring with laughter, and Bran was helped from the stage, he wheeled over to Arya and Gendry’s table. They were trying hard to catch their breaths, hands on the ribs as they tried to form sentences. 

“Your highness,” Gendry started before promptly bursting into laughter, patting Bran on the shoulder as he wheezed out another laugh.

“What the fuck was that?” 

“I wanted everyone to know that I still fuck.” 

The pair looked at each other before banging their hands on the table, the entire venue a stream of laughter. It made Bran happy. 

The next day, Robb texted the group an article.

Sunday 17th February 12:20am

I've not written in so long, I think I've tried to shove all the feelings I've felt right down this past week and a bit with medication and sleep. In a way I'm thankful our donor couldn't help this month because I was able to take my stronger tablets to help.

I tried to go down to the registrar office the other week to find out his exact day of death or the day they found him and a guess of when he killed himself but it would of cost and I didn't want to spend another penny on him. But part of me wishes I had just done it so I could of put it to rest a little bit more. But the Sunday 1 week ago, I just kinda felt empty all day, like I felt guilt still but then I felt anger, but then I felt upset then angry at myself then hatred, I was just feeling so much it all became a blur, I didn't sleep at all that night, I maybe got an hour or 2 once Atlanta came home. And then knowing that fucking valentines day was coming up too. That's now been 6 years and 3 days since I broke down and it all came spilling out. Part of me wishes I had just kept my mouth shut. Maybe it would of stopped? Conor said he hated him but was upset that he didn't get to say goodbye before he killed himself. Living with that guilt, it's like a constant weight on your shoulders, sometimes it lifts a bit when people help but no one can help enough to get it off. I try and tell people how I feel about it all but all I ever get is that it's in the past its happened, he's gone I'm safe and it wasn't ever my fault, he was a sadistic coward. But they don't know how it feels, so how can they tell me what to feel. That's why I just stay quiet and don't bring it up. I just feel stupid whenever I do. I've been feeling really strange in the flat recently, my nightmares are really really fucking bad rn, idk it's just every year since he killed himself around this time and the start of October I always feel something around that dosent feel good? Idk I'm probably just imaging stuff.

I checked my Facebook memories like I always do and it came up from a year ago that I posted all my photos from Uig. I don't have anywhere near half of them because Chris was in them and I don't want any memory of her. That was the best holiday/trip I've ever been on to date, I just hate how it was with her. Because I feel bad when I think about it or talk about it or look at the photos. It's just horrible how one of the best experiences of my life was with someone who I hate with everything I have. I miss the quiet, I miss disconnecting from the world turning my phone off and just taking in everything. Walking for miles no matter the weather, smiling and climbing hills, jumping over marshy bits to get to the other side of the hill. It was literally the trip of a lifetime. But it was ruined because of her. Speaking of her, a girl Atlanta works with plays rugby with her, she says Chris comes through to dundee to do stuff with them, I then found out my mum seen her and her dad in town about a month ago, since then I've been looking at UG and pouts photos to see, not seeing a photo makes me a little safer. But photos were posted and the alum was dated the 2nd of this month, just quickly looking and then I had to double check and it was. She actually has the balls to come through here to go out and go to a club what 2 weeks ago? And people wonder why I'm terrified of leaving the house, even Atlantas scared to go out at night because of her. And we still don't have a court date or any more information. I think that just annoys me more than anything how she is still living a life and playing rugby and going out with pals and going to the club whilst we are the ones terrified to be out because of her. Once again she gets everything. It seems to be that way with literally everything in life, it always seems like I'm the one who just gets shat on 24/7.

I keep trying to message my old friend, but there's nothing. I think the no replying and not knowing what I ever done is what's driving me crazy, well that and the fact I miss her like you couldn't even imagine. Somethings look up in life whilst others I'm still just trapped unable to move forward.

I just regret so much in life and just for once want something amazing to happen in my life...im so fucking dier
