When Aria was seventeen and sleep-deprived and half-crazy with wanting to be something special, she daydreamed sometimes, furtively, stomach turning, about meeting Jace Rethal, not dead after all somehow, looking at her and acknowledging her, smiling at her, impressed, seeing the stars in her, or whatever — she was seventeen, she was subsisting on too-big dreams.

The reality, over a decade later, is not that.

Jace Rethal looks at her and all Aria can think is that he is seeing someone who failed at her loudly stated mission repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly, and she thinks he doesn't look much like her hero (she knows it's because her hero was the martyr; she knows she refused to be a martyr; she knows there are other martyrs now that live more painfully on in her heart) and in the end she is just meeting someone who works with someone she used to know well, in the end that's all, polite nods and nothing and a space forever loudly empty between Aria's ribs.
