Jaw Reduction Surgery This teenaged girl has always had a long lower jaw ever since she can remember. There is an extreme anterior crossbite of 8 mm. This had impeded her ability to speak and eat for a long time now. Desiring correction, she came to our hospital. Bone cuts were made on either side. The outer cortex was cut with a saw and the inner cortex fractured with an osteotome. The inferior alveolar nerve was mobilized with the proximal segmented allowing for manipulation of the distal segment. A segment of bone 8 mm in width was removed bilaterally. The inferior alveolar nerve was protected throughout the surgery. Occlusion was checked and the mandible was set back and fixed with screws. This resulted in dramatic improvement in her facial esthetics.
