So.

We're finally getting around to having the *actual* wedding/vow renewal our mothers have been begging us for for almost a decade! 😅

So. October 2023. Our big lesbian Jewish wedding is happening, complete with confusion about what that's gonna look like for our very goyische families. We've already had to have the 'so... this won't be the sort of ceremony you're used to or probably expecting' conversation.

My mom was like "So... what about vows?"

Me: "What about them?"

Mom: "So you don't say 'I do'?"

Me: "Not for a Jewish wedding."

Mom: "But that's weird."

Me: "To you - I'm honestly fine with it."

Mom: "It just seems transactional."

Me: "Well... it kinda technically is. But all weddings technically, traditionally, are that way."

Mom: "Just doesn't seem all that egalitarian."

Me: "We're altering things a bit since... y'know, there's no man in this situation. And the Ketubah has egal language in it."

Mom: "What's a Ketubah?"

Me: "...It's a marriage contract."

Mom: "But you're already married! And also who signs a contract before they marry?"

Me: "For starters - loads of people sign prenups before marriage and it's not that unusual a practice. This isn't theoretically all that much different. It outlines responsibilities in the marriage. It's just ritualized as part of the wedding with a pretty piece of artwork instead of as a bland legal form signed in a lawyer's office. And we're civilly married but did not have a Jewish wedding. Which is why we are having a Jewish wedding."

Mom: "Just sounds odd."

Me: "It seems weird because it's not a western Christian wedding custom. It's our tradition's norm though."

lol. Planning this will be an interesting process. Our Cantor will be officiating and I already told him "Please be prepared to over-explain absolutely *everything* about what is happening because even if I put together a program primer to explain half of our non-Jewish attendees will probably not read it and the other half still won't get it until someone explains out loud." He laughed and said he'll make a note of that.

Interesting times lie ahead. 🤣

(Also if you know anything about Jewish weddings? HALP. lol I have no idea what I'm doing.)

Getting married is easier in Ontario (than some other areas) but requires that the ceremony be performed by a Registered Wedding Officiant. You do not need to be an Ontario resident there is (potentially) a short wait to acquire the marriage license.
