This video came out two years ago, so I can now bring it up without people jumping me in the public.
Tumblr media
Not only it's just not good, the worst part of it is the shocking amount of uncredited art, especially considering that the author credited their sources.
It's just disrespectful, plain and simple.
So, I decided to find and credit every author I can, since I can't stand this sort of thing.
Either way, let's begin.
Instead of timestamping where specific artwork appeared, I'll just write in which section they appeared.
jgr vs jsr - https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/15837155
pots is playable - https://www.tumblr.com/jsrf-inside/138005975042/so-i-made-potts-the-dog-giant-d-i-was-messing (have no clue if it was posted on the actual jsrf-inside blog, so yea)
different names for different releases - https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/652648 (author deleted the art, but it is their)
In the same section appears edit of artwork made by Lesean Thomas for Girls of Gaming volume 5

jsr billboard in blah blah blah - https://konkonkonna.tumblr.com/post/105559062635/cosmicremix-i-know-im-not-the-first-person-to (this is a reblog, author wiped their blog)

So yeah, that's all i could dig up. If you know the source for more images, or noticed a mistake in this post, then please tell me and I'll edit the post.
What's the moral of the story here?
Respect artist's work!
Just because they are uploading pretty images for free, doesn't mean that you can just take them all willy-nilly. As a fandom based around an art based game, that has a lot of issues with crediting its own developers, we should know better.
Special thanks to my friends, saucenao and the Hokuto no Ken OST that was blaring while I searched for art lol.

Some misc. fun facts about NiGHTS and Reala in Sega Superstars Tennis under the read more since I have too much knowledge about this game now
Tumblr media
This one of Reala’s losing animations makes the camera spin during an actual match, but it stays still during the minigames (which is what I put in the video since it’s clearer lol). And then, since nobody blinks in this version of the game(!), he just stares at you in anger 👁️👁️ (in low quality gif form ☹️)
Tumblr media
(I’ve found out today that in other console versions they have more expression than here in the Wii version….. interesting 👀)
Certain characters’ superstar moves have effects that will make the opponent fall down when they hit the ball. If this happens to Reala, he’ll just sort of stumble and fall back in the air before getting back up. If it happens to NiGHTS, they completely flop on the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beat from JSR’s move puts graffiti on the ground which I guess makes it slippery? This makes both of them forget how to fly temporarily and walk around like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NiGHTS and Reala not only have matching animations, but also (almost) matching tennis rackets 🥺 NiGHTS’ has a diamond like their gem and I think Reala’s is a reference to his symbol in NiD (my pfp!!! I always thought they should have reused that design somewhere).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NiGHTS’ own superstar move teleports the opponent with a Paraloop, which confuses them temporarily and they can’t move, and they’ll look around. If NiGHTS gets hit by their own move, instead of looking left and right they’ll look upside down at the camera. (Reala doesn’t have any special animations for his own move or NiGHTS’ from what I’ve seen, and NiGHTS doesn’t have a special animation for Reala’s either ☹️)

hey is it me or toolshed’s design has the jet set radio vibes
Tumblr media
Well it depends on what you're going for here??
In original jet set radio, there are characters that are dressed relatively plain, like this guy
One big example is tab, who a lot of people jokingly call a janitor
This working outfit vibe was even expanded on in jsr wii design
(but if I'm being honest he very tiny little bit reminds me of trash from slap happy rhythm busters, but no crazy gadgets or hat)

[Review] Roller Angels (DSi)
Tumblr media
What if Jet Set Radio was a kids cartoon and also a 2D autorunner?
While researching DSiWare a while ago I came across this, a digital release exclusive to Japan and North America (a physical version was planned but cancelled). Thanks to advances in emulation I managed to stream a complete playthrough but now seemed a good time to revisit it during a run of games inspired by Jet Set Radio (in this case I'm able to play it thanks to 3DS custom firmware enabling a glorious piracy eshop).
The JSR similarities come in the game actions: it involves roller blading, rail- and wall-grinding, tricks, and spray-painted graffiti. This is in the context of a sidescrolling action ride, where you have to juggle all these actions (along with ledge-grabbing, shaking the spray can, and boosting) in increasingly dense runs. The pace starts slow but ramps up to an engaging level of multitasking, before plunging into a hectic spree of button-tapping in the final two worlds.
Tumblr media
Unlike JSR, the theme is very cutesy, the stars a trio of sugary sweet magical girl superheroes with animal-themed personae. Their task is to restore colour to the world with their magic paint cans after some very round and non-threatening aliens have siphoned it off (as well as brainwashed local animals to get in your way). For plot reasons the levels are very drab and grey the first time you do them which is a shame, because otherwise the art direction is quite charming.
On this playthrough I made it my goal to unlock every alternate painting in the shop, which required no small amount of grinding for coins. I must have played through the whole game four or five times to achieve this, advancing from mostly using Patty (Pink Bunny) for her higher jumps to Becky (Yellow Bear) for an easier time recovering spray pressure, to Mee (Mew Blue) using boosts more often for a more challenging technical playstyle. The game also supports the DSi/3DS camera for converting photos into paintings to use in game, but I preferred sticking to the defaults which are contextually themed to each world (wild west, forest, undersea, etc.).
Tumblr media
This title is so solid and clearly well-executed that it makes me wonder what other gems might be hidden in Starfish's back catalogue alongside all the DS shovelware and unlocalised PSP RPGs visible in their now defunct website. I know they did a decent revival of the Devilish adventure brick breaker series, and two Wii reboots of Taito arcade classics that are described as "mediocre" (for the Kiki Kaikai one, they lost the licence but then made it anyway). But their history goes back to the late 90s, and there could easily be depths untapped by me or the English-speaking Internet at large. For now, suffice it to say Roller Angels is a highlight of the DSiWare service and I love it dearly.

The recent DJ Professor K Takeover on SiIvaGunner has got me into Jet Set Radio as of late, and browsing a bit led me to an article relating to some unused concepts for a JSR game for the Wii. One of the concepts related to what would have been a new gang called the Skwable Hawks, which as you can see, were visually based on birds.

Player Profile: Retrofraction
Tumblr media
cinematographer and top 12 of at Heat Wave 3 (artwork by @daveydboi)
What names do you go by?
I go by Retrofraction, but after playing in a clan in Warframe I go by "Ret" for short. It's source was a Mega Man fan site in the early era of the internet. They called the classic Mega Man section at the Retrofraction and it stuck with me.
How did you get into Lethal League?
I was searching on itunes for Hideki Naganuma music. I am a huge fan of Jet Set Radio and the music behind it. I ran into Ain't Nothin' Like a Funcky Beat and freaked out when I saw Lethal League and Jet. When it came to tournaments, I was lucky that one of the first major meetups was at the local game lounge SAK Gaming.
Tumblr media
What’s your current Lethal League experience?
Um... so I am a filthy casual that knows just enough to beat new players. I think I took out 3-4 (one was DQ for no show) at Heat Wave 3. I mean I have beaten the game and unlocked all of the content on my Switch, but yeah the next few months I am going to put in a lot of time online and in the lab.
Who are your main/side/counter character picks?
I roll with Jet. Much like some Street Fighter player, I stick with a single character for every match up. That probably puts me at a disadvantage because I stick with a single character but I really like how Jet can fly through the air with a jet pack and create some really unique mix ups.
What are your favourite character outfits?
I like all of them, though I do like the Neon Pink Jet costume and the dark navy one.
Tumblr media
What are your stage preferences?
My favorite stage is the Sewer. It looks just like the Poison Jam's hide out, which is where the players in JSR meet Garam. Stages I want to avoid? None
What input method do you use?
So, I use the Pokken Controller. I was sold on Pokken back on the Wii U and I bought multiple controllers in hope of playing with other people. I didn't end up playing that game a ton but I loved the shoulder buttons on the Pokken pad as they are large and very satisfying to press. I guess I have always been a pad player though.
Tumblr media
Who do you hope to meet at Michigan Masters?
I think right now I just want to meet up with the SoCal group, especially CoffeeGrounds as I played casuals with him at Heat Wave 3 and had a great time.
What other games do you play?
BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle and Dead or Alive 6. BBTag is my other main game right now. I really love that game because of the cool characters and the tag mechanics are really good. So I am going to try to take Chie Hazama to the next level :3
As an indie film maker, is there a chance you might record some footage of the tournament?
I’m totally down for bringing my camera gear with me, I have a pretty decent small backpack set up that probably will fit on the airplane.
Tripods there might be a little bit more difficult but I’ll  see what I can get done.
Is there anything else you’d like to say to the community?
Don't count Arizona out! I am going to try my best to place top 8 to keep my state on the board. But keep playing I wanna learn more and have  a great time.
You can find Retrofraction at twitch.tv/retrofraction and twitter.com/retrofraction

Hey Kharlo! What original xbox games would you recommend? I was wanting Crimson Skies, since that'll be backwards compat, but I was wondering what other titles you considered amazing
The original Xbox is honestly one of the best consoles I’ve ever owned, but with that said, a lot of its games have been ported or gotten HD remakes at this point. I’d be weary of naming more obscure stuff, but Phil Spencer wants to revive Phantom Dust and Crimson Skies, so it’s clear that MS isn’t above digging deep. Let’s see…
-= Stuff you can’t get on other platforms or are better on the original Xbox =-
Panzer Dragoon Orta -
Easily the best rail shooter ever made. It’s artistically gorgeous, with a 360 camera view that changes the dynamic you usually get in rail shooters, evolving dragon forms (three, with differing speeds and power), epic boss battles, and a very compelling world and plot. One of SEGA’s greatest masterpieces.
Jet Set Radio Future -
The sequel to JSR that SEGA pretends doesn’t exist is a wildly different experience because it removed all timed missions, but it’s an excellent, excellent, artistically beautiful game.
Gunvalkyrie -
Another SEGA great; it’s a third person action game with a unique story, setting, and controls. It got mixed reviews because people literally didn’t understand how to play it, but if you got good at it, you could literally hover with enough skill to never touch the ground. An underrated action masterpiece.
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge -
Sky pirates in an alternate 1930’s timeline where you dogfight your way through really fun levels and battles. One of my favorite old school games and I’m so glad Microsoft is getting asked about it enough that it’s the first thing they showed.
Otogi: Myth of Demons -
Third person action game like Ninja Gaiden by the creators of Dark Souls, From Software. It’s nowhere near as difficult as NG, but it has a very unique combat flow full of destructible environments and a gorgeous art style. Really phenomenal. It has a sequel that is apparently even better, but I never played it.
Quantum Redshift -
It’s literally F-Zero but FASTER and with an actual storyline. This one is amazing and completely forgotten despite being on par with F-Zero GX on the Gamecube when it comes to quality.
Project Gotham Racing 2 -
Before Forza, Microsoft’s flagship racer was PGR, which is actually not a racing sim, but a really fun arcade racer where your job is to race with as much style as possible. The game has a “kudos” system that rewards you points for doing daring stunts and racing elegantly. The second one, PGR 2 is the better of the two.
Fatal Frame II -
The Fatal Frame series is an amazing survival-horror set of games, but the best one still remains the second one, Crimson Butterfly. If you’ve never played any of the FF games, or only the Wii U one, be warned that the original three are terrifying. FF II was also on the PS2, but the Xbox has the best version and Sony is never doing PS2 backwards compatibility, so that’s that.
Ninja Gaiden Black -
The only action game to ever rival Bayonetta 2 in its perfection. There’s is an HD remake on the PS3 (Ninja Gaiden Sigma), but NG Black is the most balanced and complete version of the original Ninja Gaiden. It remained king of the action genre until Bayonetta 2 released, and it’s still a close second.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay -
A game featuring Vin Diesel, developed and published by his own gaming studio sounds like a recipe for disaster, but EfBB is actually superb, and it got rave reviews at release for a reason. Give it a shot if you can, since it’s truly fantastic, well acted, and has a great storyline.
Stubbs the Zombie: Rebel Without a Pulse -
This one is weird, but a ton of fun. It was made on the original Halo engine for some reason, but it’s a game where you play as a lone zombie in an alternate 1950’s America and your job is to turn everyone else into zombies. It’s fun and full of charm and humor. It released on PC as well, but it doesn’t run anymore and the developer never supported updates. This might be your only chance to play it.
Dead or Alive 2: Ultimate -
While Soul Calibur II was amazing, Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate was also excellent in it’s own right. It’s a really fun fighter that was Dead or Alive 2 in name only; it’s a complete remake with a ton of more interactive arenas, costumes to unlock, and so on. DoA is a very unique beast in the fighting genre, and it’s worth appreciating for what it does differently. This was also the first 3D fighter to ever go online when every other developer like Namco and SEGA said online 3D fighters were impossible to do.
Genma Onimusha -
The whole Onimusha series is excellent, and the Xbox port of the first Onimusha is still the better version of that game. Totally worth checking out if you wanna play Resident Evil in Feudal Japan.
Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams -
The PS3 HD remake of this game is utter garbage, and while the PS2 original version is still the best, this one is a pretty good port. It’s still one of the better ways to experience SH2 outside of emulation. Of course, SH2 is a masterpiece.
-= Acquired Tastes =-
Shenmue II -
I LOVE the Shenmue games, but they haven’t aged well and a lot of people find them boring rather than immersive. Shenmue II has a lot more action and better story pacing, though, so it’s the better of the two by a landslide. Still, playing this game now is only possible if you import it for the Dreamcast, have an old Xbox, or if you manage to emulate it (which is hit or miss).
Sudeki -
This one got a lot of flack for the awful art style, and fairly so. But underneath the weird pseudo-anime design from a British studio, there’s a lot to like. The game is colorful and vibrant, and the combat system still remains one of the best real-time and turn-based hybrids in gaming. Weird, but fun and worth a look. It’s also on PC, but getting it to run can be a hassle.
Conker: Live and Reloaded -
A lot of people are divided on this one because, even though it adds new sequences and has gorgeous graphics even to this day, Microsoft actually censored a lot of dialogue in places where Nintendo didn’t. Personally, I find it infinitely funnier hearing a foul mouthed squirrel getting repeatedly bleeped than having him actually spit out the profanity, but that’s just me.
-= Stuff you can pick up on PC and will probably play better (although Spencer mentioned original Xbox games getting upgrades, so we’ll see) =-
Fable Anniversary, Voodoo Vince Remaster, Jade Empire: Special Edition, Stars Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Max Payne, Max Payne 2, House of the Dead III, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Psychonauts, Splinter Cell, and Oddworld: Strangers Wrath HD.-= Stuff you can pick up on newer consoles  =-Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has an HD remake for the PS3 collection, and Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysey has an HD remake on PS3 as well. Phantom Dust you can get on Xbox One right now (highly recommend). You can get Grabbed by the Ghoulies in an HD remake with the Rare Replay (this game got a lot of shit, but it was mostly unfair and it remains really fun). You can get Beyond Good and Evil in HD for the 360 and it’s backward comp with the Xbox One; same with Soul Calibur II HD. You can get Halo and Halo 2 remasters in the Xbox One Masterchief Collection.
I think that covers it.

Why Jet Set Radio series will not have (anymore) a new opus or a Future portage
Warning : Pour mes followers français, cet article est avant tout destiné à des gens de la communauté Jet Set Radio, l’article est donc en anglais
Hi here,
I will not hide it : since the first episode, I LOVE Jet Set Radio. The gameplay, the soundtrack, the unique graphic style... All was perfect ! And all of this was crystalized in the sequel Future on the original Xbox.
This was my first encounter with this series, and I remembered how the game was cool and challenging.
Still in 2018, I continue to love the Jet Set Radio series, and year by year, I am really sad that Sega have no plans about it, nor considering a portage of the Future game to PC/¨PS4/XOne/Switch.
I have investigated on the possible reasons on why Sega ignore the JSR series, and I have multiple theories about this.
1/ The loss of the source code : Not impossible, but Smilebit was a division of Sega. The source code of JSRF is maybe lost, or unreadable. But it’s the most unprobable theory.
2/ Musical rights conflicts : Apart Hideki Naganuma’s work on JSRF (including remixes), some tracks have changed from owners to another. Scapegoat Wax’s music catalog, for example, now belongs to Hollywood records, a division of... Disney. No doubt that they don’t want to do contracts archeology and want to renegotiate new licences. Most probable reason for halting or not launching a JSRF portage.
3/ Weak number of sales : If today, the JSRF series have gained some popularity, it makes no doubt that the weak number of sales of JSRF (in Japan the sales of the title suffered from weak sales of the original Xbox itself) have made SEGA cold from making a new Jet Set Radio.
It’s interesting to note that Kuju Entertainment had presented a sequel of Jet Set Radio Future to Sega, initially for a release on Nintendo Wii, but they refused, claiming that they are not interested for making a new JSR for any console... Sad days.
