Louise Brealey is perhaps best known for her witty portrayal of lovelorn morgue technician Molly Hooper in Sherlock – but we’re loving her recent comedy work even more. She’ll next be seen in the BBC‘s hotly anticipated comedy Such Brave Girls, coming later this month. Written by Kate Sadler, Louise plays Deb, the matriarch of a dysfunctional family, trying and failing to keep her kamikaze daughters from disaster. We sat down with Louise to hear all about it.

Hi Louise, how’s life going at the moment?
Hello! It’s been a busy summer – my new film has been doing the festival circuit so there have been a lot of planes, trains and automobiles.
You’re about to star in BBC’s new series Such Brave Girls – can you give us an elevator pitch for the show?
Two messed-up twenty-something (real-life) sisters [Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson] and their total car crash of a mother attempt to navigate their way out of disaster and into love.
You play Deb – can you describe her?
Deb is amazing. She’s a shockingly bad mum who has completely messed up her two Gen Z daughters. I think of her as one of those vending machines at railway stations and swimming pools where you can get a Twix, but all that’s on her shelves is Tough Love.
What was it like playing her?
A terrifying hoot – she has a lot of lines.
How did you get into character/prepare for the role?
I based Deb on a little girl I used to know. You could see every emotion on her face. Guile, rage, confusion, fear. When she was cross, she scowled. When she was delighted, she beamed.
I used my real accent: Northamptonshire. It has softened over the years, so I sound a lot posher now, but it’s how my family speak and I’ve never had the chance to work using it.
Any funny stories from rehearsals or filming?
The scenes requiring our amazing intimacy coordinator, Elle McAlpine, were hysterically funny and genuinely not at all awkward. Poor Paul Bazely who plays Dev may have experienced some chafing.
What is the cast dynamic? Who was your favourite person to work with?
We are like a little family when we are filming. I feel very protective of Kat and Lizzie. And Paul is a wonderful human being and a phenomenal actor.
Are you still in touch with any of your co-stars?
Yes, we message all the time.

You’re perhaps best known for your role as Molly in Sherlock. What is that like to look back on?
Bittersweet because I don’t feel we finished it, and we have lost Una Stubbs. But it was incredible to be a part of what was really a phenomenon. It couldn’t happen now with streaming.
Any special memories from the show?
Too many. Having a candle in an egg custard tart (my favourite) on my birthday in Benedict’s trailer… Laughing and laughing with darling Una and Rupert Graves, who is a dreamboat.
You’ve also starred in the likes of Lockwood & Co, Brian and Charles and Back recently. But what has been your favourite project to date?
I loved working on Clique for the BBC a few years back. I got to play a hard-ass Queen Bee university lecturer in power suits who was afraid of no one, and then to completely fall apart. In an Edinburgh accent.
I loved Lockwood & Co. How does it feel for the show to be cancelled after just one series?
I felt so bad for the young cast, the crew, the fans and everyone whose livelihoods depended on the show coming back. It got such fantastic reviews and great viewing figures. I feel like the hoop it had to jump through for the streamer was just too impossibly small.
Any roles in the pipeline that you’re excited about? (If you’re allowed to tell us!)
I’m the lead in a lesbian chicken factory musical film called Chuck Chuck Baby.
Who has been your favourite actor to work with in the past?
This is much too hard. There have been so many that I admired, and some I now call dear friends. But my buddy Jeff Rawle I’ve worked with three times now, and we are trying to make it a fourth.
Which co-star did you learn the most from?
Antonia Pemberton, who played Nanny in Peter Hall’s Uncle Vanya when I was Sonya. She told me not to keep tomatoes in the fridge.
What’s your dream role?
I’m desperate to get back on stage. I’ve been doing film and television for the past seven years, but theatre is my heart and my home.
What’s a genre you’d like to do more of?
I’d like a good horror. I can’t watch them because I’m a scaredy-cat, but I’d love to be in one.
Tumblr media
© Leo Staar
Do you get to spend much time at home?
Not enough. I’ve been gadding about.
Do you live in the town or the country? Which do you prefer?
I’ve lived in London since I left university. I live on a hill next to an oak tree, so it feels like we are in the branches. I can never leave London because I’d miss the culture stuff, but I am a woodland creature.
What’s your interior design style?
A mish-mash of old things I’ve found in auctions. Too many books.
How do you find balance in your personal and work lives?
I don’t.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An astronaut.
If you could give advice to your 15-year-old self, what would it be?
Don’t sleep with that guy’s flatmate when you are 21.
How can we all live a little bit better?
Choose love.
Anything fun in the pipeline – professionally or personally?
I’m going to run away to a southern European city for January and February to write.
Quick Fire
I’m currently watching… Only Murders in the Building
What I’m reading… We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
The last thing I watched (and loved) was… Silo. I love Rebecca Ferguson.
What I’m most looking forward to seeing… The Motive and the Cue with Mark Gatiss in the West End because I was away for its National Theatre run.
Favourite film of all time… Don’t Look Now
Favourite song of all time… ‘Disco 2000’ by Pulp
Band/singer I always have on repeat… Leonard Cohen
My ultimate cultural recommendation… Join all the museums and galleries
Cultural guilty pleasure… Overcooked 2. It’s computer game where you run around and try to make kebabs.
What’s next for me is… Walking my dog in Beckenham Place Park – it’s south London’s secret mini Hampstead Heath.

A couple of other movies:
HEATWAVE: Watchable but routine 2022 thriller about a bisexual Black woman with a checkered past (Kat Graham) who lands an exciting job with an upscale commercial real estate firm and finds a sexy white girlfriend (Merritt Patterson), only to find herself in a world of trouble after discovering that her new girlfriend is actually the trophy wife of her jealous, domineering new boss (Sebastian Roché). Making the protagonist a Black woman is novel for this genre (although it has less impact on the plot than perhaps it should), and the Graham character is a resourceful heroine, but the plot isn't quite inventive enough to make up for the all-too-familiar premise, and the story can't seem to decide what note it wants to end on, leading to a less-than-satisfying resolution. The corny voiceover that bookends the film doesn't help either.
THE HOT SPOT: GIF sets floating around Tumblr might give you the mistaken impression that this 1990 thriller, directed by Dennis Hopper and starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, and Jennifer Connelly, is some kind of forgotten sexy gem. In fact, it's a curiously lifeless neo-noir about a sleazy used car salesman (Johnson) in a small Texas town who attempts to juggle an ill-advised affair with his boss's vampish wife (Madsen), who has murder on her mind, with his pursuit of the dealership's financing manager (Connelly), a nice girl who's being blackmailed by a local ne'er-do-well (William Sadler) over her past lesbian affair with a now-dead female friend. Wants to evoke DOUBLE INDEMNITY and BODY HEAT, but it trips from plot point to plot point in disjointed, illogical fashion, failing to develop any real narrative momentum, much less suspense. Despite its murders, arson, and other assorted mayhem, it's ultimately just boring, with only the periodic scenes of Madsen or Connelly mostly naked to keep the viewer awake (although the movie defies convention in not making its one bisexual character a conniving femme fatale). Don't waste your time.
THE SQUAD: Frustratingly joyless, moderately exploitative 2023 action movie, written, produced, and directed by Rick Walker, about three ruthless, bikini-clad 20something white girls (Alea Hansinger, Meghan Carrasquillo, and Grace Evans), once rescued from foster care by a benefactor called Alpha (Jennifer Ferguson), who attempt to break into the drug scene on the Oklahoma coast in the run-up to spring break and quickly run afoul of the game's established players. The leering direction is a series of music video clichés — every scene feels like it's leading up to either a montage or a dance routine that's not forthcoming — and the clumsy script does a terrible job of establishing basic plot and character details (the girls' relationship with Alpha, the most potentially interesting part of the story, is consigned to a handful of awkwardly placed flashbacks). Of the poorly defined characters, only the girls' friend JC makes any impression, and then mostly because of the physical presence of MMA star Julia Avila (who isn't given much chance to demonstrate whether or not she can act). As demonstrated by the silly but entertaining 2018 remake of SUPERFLY (by Director X and Alex Tse), it's possible to do this kind of thing in a way that at least qualifies as dumb fun, but THE SQUAD is too mean-spirited to work even on that level, and the end titles' promise of a sequel seems more like a threat than a promise.

January 1st 1848 saw riots by Irish navvies in Stonehaven.
As the years go by it never ceases to amaze me on the history I pick up. Now I know the headline above says Irish, but from what I can gather this was as much instigated by "Highlanders" as it was any Irish, in fact there isn't a lot to say that Irish were involved at all, the headline comes courtesy of one of my main source pages that I check, day in day out, I am pretty sure this must have been added to in the past twelve months as I had never come across it before.
Anyway after some digging around I found a source that has a report from the Aberdeen Journall dated 12 January 1848, the dates are a wee bit out but it may have been a weekly paper and missed the deadline the week before, so wasn't printed then........later in the post the date is given as January 5th. Now just for the sake of getting this post out there, as I see it as quite interesting, I am posting it today, lest I forget in a few days time.
BARBAROUS AND FATAL ATTACK OF THE RAILWAY NAVIES, ON STONEHAVEN.
Since the Railway works were located in the neighborhood of Stonehaven, they have been located in the town and principally from the Highlands. They are generally lodged by renting small rooms from 5 people. to 6s. a-week, buying in their own provisions. The price of provisions has advanced, as they have been everywhere, because of the time that they have been found among the provision merchants, and from that time forward they felt that if they owed those people a grudge; and also occasionally made slight assaults on the inhabitants.Mr Forbes, the principal contractor for works in the neighbourhood, has been employed by Mr Forbes at a reduced rate of wages, occasioned by the general depression of trade. It was now expected that the peace of the district would be secured, and for weeks there were no disturbance among the navies sufficient to excite them; but it now appears that they have still been harbouring their old grudge. In the forenoon of Wednesday last the people of the town were alarmed at the meeting of the railway labourers on the Square, and soon after two and three hundred navies had assembled, with bludgeons, knives, and pikes; and as they conversed together in Gaelic, the people of the town did not know their plans.
After consultation, a number of those who had no sticks, went to the woods at Dunnottar, where they cut branches from the trees, and about three o'clock the whole entered the Old Town in a body. They made their first attack on Mr Walker, a slater, who had previously helped to quell the outbreak, knocked him down with their bludgeons, and smashed a lot of windows in his master's (Mr Thompson's) house, who had also been obliged on a former occasion to resist the “navies.” Having beaten Walker, they left him, and proceeded to the Square. Mr. Weir, the Superintendent of Police, thought it hopeless to make any attempt to repel the attack, but watched the ringleaders, with a view to their apprehension.
About half-past five, the Highlanders marched through the town in order, shouting, and smashing every window where a light appeared. At the bottom of Ann Street they met Wm. Murray, a young man, who had just come from the country to see his friends, who they knocked down and left lying on the road. They then went to the Commercial Inn, where they smashed all the windows and tried to force the house, but were unable. They next attacked the Mill Inn, broke several windows, and attempted to gain admission, but Mr Melvin and the other inmates were unable to keep them at bay.
Passing from the Mill Inn, they met one of Mr Melvin's sons, who was maltreated, but though dreadfully bruised, was able to make his escape. The mob now went direct to Mr. Knox, the sadler's, another of the doomed houses, and here they broke open the door, smashed the windows, frames and all; Mr Knox, his sons, and the party who happened to be in the house, the consequences would have been the most fatal character.
It is hopeless to effect the entrance here, they are yet to parade the town, assaulting every person who can speak Gaelic ; and breaking, as before, every window in which there was light.About nine o'clock the Highlanders dispersed, and there was quietness for the night. The unfortunate man, Murray, was already found lying in a state of insensibility by a girl who was passing, and Mr Milne's in the Old Town, he found that his back was broken, and his skull was broken .
He was only able to say “I am murdered, and the navies have done it,” when he died.John Hobb, who was also struck in the street, was dangerously bruised, but is recovering.
Altogether, about twenty people who were maltreated, and for anything the mob cared, were in some instances left for dead in the streets; but they are now out of danger. Throughout the town, the cries of murder were heart-rending, and the scene appears to have been one that can scarcely be described; indeed, such was the state of the town, that it was safe to leave his house, and consequently no official steps could be taken by the local authorities.
Early on Thursday a special meeting of the Justices of the Peace was held, when it was resolved to send the expressions for the detachment of the military to Aberdeen, and Captain Barclay and Mr Graham Monro were charged with the commission.
On Thursday evening twenty soldiers of the 93rd Highlanders , under the command of Capt. Leith Hay, arrived in Stonehaven, and since then, there has been no further disturbance.Eleven of the ringleaders have been apprehended, and will speedily be brought to trial.
The line about Gaelic I have highlighted I assume is an editing error and should read assaulting every person who can't speak Gaelic.
Further to my pint about the lack of Irish in this incident I go on to the appearance of some of the men in court on March 11th, again the date it actually appeared in the Aberdeen Journal was April 12th 1848, such was the slow methods of getting the news out in those days.
Tuesday, March 11.The Court was opened this day at a quarter to ten o'clock and proceeded to the trial of the following prisoners.
MOBBING, RIOTING, AND MURDER.
The diet was first called against Donald Davidson , William M'Donald , John M'Kinnon , Donald M'Kenzie , and Colin Munro , who stood charged with the crimes of mobbing, rioting, malicious mischief, assault and murder. The indictment set forth that the prisoners had, on the 5th of January last, at Stonehaven, formed part of a mob, or great number of riotous and evil-disposed persons, being armed, all, or in part, with pickshafts, sticks, and stones, or other weapons and missiles, wickedly and feloniously assembled in a riotous, violent, and tumultuous manner, for the unlawful purpose of destroying property and life.M'Kenzie didn't answer to the charge, and was outlawed.
I'm butting in for a bit to highlight more evidence that this was not Irishmen, but Scots' not one Irish name amongst the accused men. The account continues......
Christian or Elizabeth Thain - Identified Davidson and Munro as leaders of the mob on its return from the shore, about four o'clock. Went to New Town a quarter before five, and saw the striking navies William Gordon. Saw the windows in Knox's house broken. Saw the mob breaking them. Knew [Brebner's] shop. Saw William Murray standing on the pavement there with John Carnegie. Witness saw Carnegie struck with a walking-stick. Heard William Murray cry at that moment “Run Carnegie;” and heard Murray then say to the mob, “Ah! fie! ye Highland butchers. ” Donald Davidson then came and swore at Murray, and struck him with a stick. The blow was a very serious one. It knocked Murray down. Colin Munro shoved Murray down when he was trying to rise, but he had no stick. Witness said to Davidson, when she saw him strike Murray, “Good God! Donald Davidson, I'll tell Jamie Reid the nicht. ” Davidson then ran away up the street. Colin Munro went away too. Witness then lifted up William Murray. He complained of his head. He was able to walk part of the way to Robert Milne's. He leant on witness's arm. While on the way Murray said to witness, “You know the man who struck me and ran away.” It was Donald Davidson. Witness heard Eliza Cowle, who met them, speak to Murray, who, “I've been killed by the navies.” It was darkening at this time. Witness identified Davidson and Munro, but not certain as Donald M'Kenzie.
The prisoners' declarations were then read. They denied that any breach of the peace was committed, but simply a slight disturbance. They denied that any organisation had engineered life and property had been formed; but admitted that they had arranged to make a demonstration, to show the town how powerful the Highlanders were.
Counsel for Davidson called a number of witnesses, to prove that he had taken no particular lead in the riot, though he had been present, and that he had been at home at the time Murray was killed.
More evidence that the Journal was a weekly paper becomes apparent in the next report from April 19th exactly 7 days after the report about the trial.
The Aberdeen Journal (April 19, 1848).
Wednesday, April 12 .
THE STONEHAVEN RIOTERS.
The Court met again this morning at 10 o'clock, when the four prisoners concerned in the Stonehaven riots, viz: - Donald Davidson, William M'Donald, John M'Kinnon , and Colin Munro , who were found guilty of the crimes of mobbing, rioting, malicious mischief, assault, and culpable homicide, were brought up to receive sentence. After an impressive admonition from Lord Moncrieff, Lord Cockburn sentenced Munro , to 1 Kat imprisonment , M'Kinnon and M'Donald , to 18 months' imprisonment each, and Davidson , who had proved to be more culpable than the others, to seven years' transportation.
So what exactly caused the Navvies to riot? Well in the book, History of Everyday Life in Scotland, 1800 to 1900 I found the simple answer- greed. Not the rioters, but the shopkeepers of Stonehave, who apparently increased their prices to take advantage of the outside workforce.
Another book, Fishermen, Randies and Fraudsters: Crime in the 19th Century Aberdeen and the North East, sheds more light on the undercurrent cause, and absolves some of the blame away from the shopkeepers blaming high prices in general all over Europe.
I also uncovered a possible reason the headline falsely accuses this riot on Irish Navvies, although I do think there may have been some involved, but not in the roles of ringleaders. The second book I mentioned tells us that "The Highlander" had "abandoned their tradition work wear in favour of the more flash Irish Navvies.

Tumblr media
Emma Corrin attends The Olivier Awards 2022 at the Royal Albert Hall.
Emma Corrin was the talk of the Olivier Awards on Sunday night when they graced the red green carpet in a campy balloon dress.
The 26-year-old Crown star, who uses she/they pronouns, turned heads in the balloon print dress from Jonathan Anderson’s fall 2022 collection for Loewe, complete with a pair of deflated balloons cast as a kind of breastplate.
And to complete the look? A pair of black patent leather boots, complete with (what else?) balloon heels.
Sharing a picture of Emma’s outfit on Instagram, their stylist Harry Lambert captioned the snap: “This one is for the gays”.

THE BIG LEAP (ordered to pilot)
based on UK reality series “Big Ballet”
A group of diverse underdogs from all different walks of life compete to be part of a competition reality series that is putting on a modern, hip remake of “Swan Lake.” What they lack in the traditional dancer body type, they make up for with their edge, wit and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold. The Big Leap takes us on a journey of self-acceptance, body-positivity and empowerment at any age.
Cast (thus far)
Scott Foley (Scandal) as the handsome, smart, and a little slick Nick Smart, the executive producer of The Big Leap. He delights in the inevitable drama of putting together strangers on a reality show. He isn’t totally devoid of a conscience, but he lives to make entertaining television. (Mar 11)
Teri Polo (The Fosters) as Julia Torrence. A beautiful former ballerina, Julia is now a social-media-obsessed mom who focuses more on her Instagram than her moody teenage girls or her distant husband, Kevin. When she sees the chance to audition for “The Big Leap,” it feels like a chance to fill what feels like a hollow, art-free life. (Feb 24)
Matt Lucas (Doctor Who) as Wayne Sleep, a joyful British fellow who is one of the co-hosts of “The Big Leap.” He is a former dancer and is entertaining, enthusiastic and encouraging. (Feb 24)
Ser’Darius Blain (Charmed) as Reggie Sadler. A stunning specimen of humanity, Reggie is a gorgeous, famous, athletic, professional football player. He has demonstrated some erratic behavior and needs to take a break from the sport. He decides that some career rehab is in order and finds himself learning to dance so he can audition to be on “The Big Leap.” (Feb 24)
Ray Cham (Mech-X4) as Justin Reyes, Gabby’s adorable high school boyfriend and dance partner, who came out of the closet to nobody’s surprise except Gabby — and his parents, who kicked him out. He works at a big-box store to support himself now, but when Gabby shows up and tells him about the dance contest, he catches the spark and gets excited to dance again too. (Feb 24)
Simone Recasner (Sink, Sank, Sunk) as Gabby Taylor. Gabby is a wonderful single mom who gave up her dream of being a dancer to take care of her adorable child, Sam, and because she never had the traditional “dancer’s body”…but it’s a shame because she is an amazing dancer. When she sees a chance to chase her dream again, she lights up with a fire she hasn’t had in years. (Mar 11)
Jon Rudnitsky (Catch-22) as Mike Devries. A fit, blue collar former auto worker who is laid off and finds himself trying to survive in the gig economy with his other former co-workers. His wife, Paige, also recently left him. On the verge of a breakdown, he decides to dance his way onto The Big Leap to win his wife back. (Mar 11)
