Keeptober 2023 #13 — Council

Bronte hates how the Council’s meetings have become so dour. 

   It used to be a bit better with Kenric, but Alina insists, even more than Emery does, that they maintain formality in their work environment. 

   Formality, Bronte thinks, and snorts. 

   “Your hair was hanging over the chaise and all the way down to the floor — it’s so long!. How could I not step on it?”

   Bronte hated arriving to meetings that had already devolved into chaos. 

   “It is my hair, and I may hang it as I please,” Fallon replied serenely. Fintan made a sound of intense displeasure, then beamed suddenly. It was the sort of beaming that indicated ideas that were at best, silly, and at worst, disastrous.  

   Bronte didn’t even have the time to shout ‘Fintan, no.’

   Fintan — dressed pristinely in pale blue and white robes, hair spotless and intricately braided down his back — lay down, lightning-quick, by the chaise, and flung his legs onto Fallon’s chest. 

   Fallon sighed. “Please, take your feet off,” he said. “My clothes will get dirty.”

  “And my boots have your hair on them, so we’re even,” Fintan retorted. 

   Now was the time to intercede. “There was more damage to Fallon, at any rate, and we do have business to attend to!” Bronte exclaimed. “We aren’t children anymore!” 

   They both sprang up at this, somehow without kicking each other in the faces, and shared a look. 

   And then suddenly Bronte was being tackled to the ground by two elegant, superbly childish elves, and despite himself, he was laughing. 

Even after all that has happened, Bronte misses those days.

I have mixed feelings about Lodestar overall, but it has some excellent scenes. The slumber party is fun and cute, that one conversation between Sandor and Grizel that Sophie eavesdrops on is way better than it has any right to be, and most of all, Lumenaria falling is such an excellent climax to the book. It's well foreshadowed, suspenseful, and contains quite a few clever applications of the worldbuilding. And the AFTERMATH! The conversation with Keefe and Forkle 1's death scene are both so good. It's got losses and victories, squeamish descriptions, and truly impactful dialogue. I love that scene so much, it's the best climax of the series, and I don't see people talk about it enough.

Keeptober 2023 #17 — Home

   “Foster,” Keefe asks, “what does it feel like to have a home?”

   Sophie frowns — she looks so old when she frowns! Keefe wants to wipe the lines from her face. “I’m not sure,” she says. “Havenfield is home, I guess.” 

   “But what makes home home?” She feels introspective to Keefe, and a little concerned. 

   He hates being such a concern to her. 

   “I suppose,” she says, “a place where people love you? A place you can go to where no one will ask you questions, just pull you close and tell you that everything will be alright.” She pauses again. “But that isn’t all it is. Home has to be warm, and a little lived in — Alluveterre was nowhere near cosy enough, come to think of it.”

   “Not even with our amazing sleepovers?” He smiles, but it’s hard. 

   Sophie, too, beams. “That did make it better.”

   Keefe mulls over her words silently for a little while. So Candleshade obviously isn’t home, nor are any of Daddy Dearest’s houses. He has always felt warm, and welcome, in Everglen. Less so in Havenfield, but…

   Sophie’s here. Makes it better, somehow. 

   “I think the people have something to do with it too,” he says to her, slowly. “Everglen wouldn’t be home without Alden and Della and Biana and Fitz and—” he cuts himself off before he can say Alvar’s name. “And Havenfield isn’t home either, not without you.”

   Sophie blushes a little, but does nothing else except let him lean on his shoulder.
