My fellow Americans, although we weren't able to flip Mississippi (wasn't expecting much but a man can dream), we pulled off a huge victory for democracy in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia. We showed people what happens when you mess with people who really love this country. People can run their mouths and claim they love America, but their actions and policies reveal otherwise. We showed them what we think of them. This was especially true in Kentucky. They saw how powerful and useful Democratic rule is. A state as red as Kentucky realized they're better off with Democrats. And I'm sure other states will follow. This is a time of extreme uncertainty. However, one thing I'm certain of is that this country is in good hands. God bless the people of this country. God bless America

2023 elections, a pretty damn good night.
Hello, if you're an American maybe you know there were some elections last night, here are some highlights
Rhode Island Special Election:
Gabe Amo was elected to Congress from Rhode Island's First Congressional district. The son of African immigrants (father from Ghana, mother from Liberia) Amo is the first black person to represent Rhode Island in Congress. His election brings the Congressional Black Caucus to a historic 60 members, an all time high.
Ohio Ballot measures:
In an overwhelming vote Ohio voters approved a ballot measure that puts the right to an abortion into the state constitution. This overturns the extremely restrictive abortion ban passed by the Republican state legislature in 2019 which was allowed to go into effect after the Supreme Court's Dobbs ruling.
A similarly overwhelming vote for a ballot measure legalizing marijuana in the state also passed last night. Both measures got about 57% of the vote in a state that voted for Trump 53-45% in 2020. It's being taken as a good sign for Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown's re-election campaign next year
Kentucky gubernatorial election:
Incumbent Democratic Governor Andy Beshear sailed to victory over rising Republican State state Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Cameron had been vetted for the Supreme Court by Trump, was hand picked for the AG race and Governor's race by Mitch McConnell who its rumored wanted Cameron to replace him in the Senate one day. So this defeat is the end of the political life of what many Republicans hoped would be a star. Cameron and the KYGOP attacked Beshear for his support of trans rights, his veto of a trans care for minors ban, as well as his support for abortion and ran ads tying him to President Biden. Beshear won 53-47% in a state Trump won 62-36% in 2020.
Virginia Legislative elections:
Virginia's Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin hoped to take control of the Virginia State Senate from the Democrats who had a one seat majority in the upper house. If Youngkin could have done it he planned on passing abortion restrictions and anti-trans laws and use it to prove his future Presidential ambitions. Virginia Democrats not only held onto the Senate Senate they expanded their control by picking up 22 seats. Also special, Danica Roem the first openly trans person elected to a state legislature back in 2017 when she was elected to the Virginia state House won her race to become Virginia's first trans state senator. Not only did Democrats hold onto the State Senate, they took control of the State House as well, going from 48 seats to 51. A strong rebuke to Youngkin's Republican agenda and boxing him in for the last two years of his Governorship
Pennsylvania Supreme Court election:
In Pennsylvania Democrat Daniel McCaffery beat out Republican Carolyn Carluccio for a seat on the state Supreme Court. This secures a Democratic majority on the court ahead of year of challenges to abortion rights and ahead of the 2024 elections where Republicans will surely try to challenge the state's election results in court.
New Jersey Legislative elections:
Democrats already controlled the NJ State House and Senate but last night they managed to pick up more seats in both. Including flipping what was generally considered the deepest red district in the state. The 30th District went to Republicans 72% in the last election. However this time a Jewish Democrat Rabbi Avi Schnall won one of the district's two seats beating a Republican incumbent by 10 points.
I'm sure lots of other cool things happened last night in local elections and ballot measures across the country but those were the one's I noticed.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear tells Jen Psaki that trans kids “children of God”
Newly re-elected Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) recently explained why Republican ads decrying his belief in trans rights was a losing strategy. Speaking to MSNBC correspondent Jen Psaki, Beshear first emphasized his passion for protecting trans kids. Related: Democrats introduce resolution to recognize Trans Day of Remembrance “I will never waiver in the effort to ensure that all trans individuals can live without the constant fear of violence and hate.” “All children are children of God, that’s what my faith teaches me, and I was going to stand up especially for the most marginalized children who didn’t deserve either a state legislature or an entire campaign and all these super PACS picking on them.” Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you: Subscribe to our Newsletter In March, Beshear vetoed a sweeping anti-trans bill that included bans on gender-affirming surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormone therapy for minors, as well as a mandate that doctors stop treating young patients who are currently receiving gender-affirming care. It also banned Kentucky teachers from using pronouns that “do not conform to a student’s biological sex as indicated on the student’s original, unedited birth certificate,” bans instruction on sexuality in grades K through six, and bans discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation at all grade levels. Kentucky’s Republican-dominated legislature voted to override Beshear’s veto. When it came time for the gubernatorial election, an outside organization spent millions of dollars on ads attacking transgender people to support GOP candidate and state Attorney General Daniel Cameron. One of the ads funded by the American Principles Project PAC (APP-PAC) said that Beshear would send the FBI to take trans kids away from their parents if their parents didn’t accept their identities, which was not a part of Beshear’s platform. Another ad showed a drag queen and accused Beshear of pushing “child sex changes with permanent consequences.” The ad was removed from YouTube under the platform’s hate speech policy. In several other ads featuring former University of Kentucky swimmer and anti-trans activist Riley Gaines, APP-PAC attacked Beshear for vetoing a bill to ban trans kids from participating in school sports. The Republican legislature ultimately overturned his veto. Speaking to Psaki, Beshear explained why he believes the Republicans conducted a losing campaign. “The way these Super PACS and my opponent went about their campaign was just mean, and it was gross, and it was cruel,” he said. “And people don’t like that. That is not who we are, and this oughta be a message that you can’t scapegoat people just to get folks angry, and it’s wrong. He went on to discuss how trans kids suffer more mental health issues and are more at risk for suicide. “We oughta be in the suicide prevention business and not further harming kids who are going through too much. I did it because it was the right thing.” He concluded, “This can’t be right and left; some things have to be basic right and wrong… There’s gotta be limits. This can’t be a rule-less type of game because it’s so much more than a game – ask any of these kids.” Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) on his re-election and vetoing anti-trans bills: "All children are children of God … I was going to stand up for the most marginalized children who didn't deserve either a state legislature or an entire campaign picking on them." pic.twitter.com/SBBNSGPjsL— Heartland Signal (@HeartlandSignal) November 21, 2023 http://dlvr.it/SzMhY2

"We see sin," Addressing Gun Control and Mental Health in the Aftermath of a Tragedy in Louisville, KY via /r/atheism
"We see sin," Addressing Gun Control and Mental Health in the Aftermath of a Tragedy in Louisville, KY
I live in Louisville, KY, where just last week, a horrific shooting occurred. An individual armed with an assault-style weapon killed five people, injuring many more, including a police officer who was shot in the head. My community and I are still trying to come to terms with this devastating event.
As I listened to my local public radio station, I couldn't help but notice the coverage of the upcoming gubernatorial elections. The five GOP front-runners all oppose red flag laws or any form of gun control legislation. Instead, they focus on access to mental health resources. Current Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron said in an interview with WKU Public Radio, “I’m not for gun control. I know some folks, particularly in Louisville right now, are responding to this moment. But we live in a fallen world and there are broken people, and we see sin, and things happen. It’s a tragedy when it occurs, but the response, in my view, is not gun control.”
This statement, along with the sentiment of "things happen" and invoking sin, illustrates the religious right's selective approach to rights and regulations. They often push to restrict access to abortion and limit healthcare for vulnerable populations, while simultaneously advocating for mental health access. However, they target transgender individuals in the same breath, undermining their supposed commitment to mental health support. By using the phrase "access to mental health" as a shield, these politicians deflect pressure from constituents who are concerned about the impact of guns on our families and communities.
Yet, these same politicians champion the Second Amendment above all else in Kentucky, often invoking God and Jesus in their arguments. It's time for our leaders to take a hard look at their priorities and recognize the importance of both gun control and mental health in protecting our communities.
I needed to vent and get this off my chest as it has been building up.

Kentucky Dem Suggests Biden Be Impeached For War Crimes in Ukraine
Tumblr media
© Sputnik/Stringer/Go to the mediabank
— Ilya Tsukanov | Sputnik International | Saturday January 14, 2023
The US has committed over $110 Billion in military and economic aid and intelligence support to Kiev for the conflict in Ukraine, which Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has characterized as a Western “proxy war” against Russia.
Kentucky progressive Democrat and gubernatorial candidate Geoffrey Young has proposed that President Joe Biden be “Immediately” thrown out of office for a series of war crimes committed by his administration.
“I think Joe Biden (D-War Criminal) should be impeached immediately for war crimes in Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Iraq etc,” Young tweeted, specifying that reasons for impeachment include “the illegal proxy war against Russia in Ukraine.”
Tumblr media
Geoffrey M Young's tweet. © Photo: Tweet
Young, 66, calls himself as a “Peace Democrat,” and is an outspoken critic of imperious US foreign policy who has savagely criticized the sending of US taxpayer money to Kiev by both parties, and slammed the conflict in Ukraine as a lost cause for the US and NATO.
His candidacy for governor and challenge of incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear in the governor’s race has been largely ignored by mainstream media, which has dubbed him the "perennial candidate" or failed to mention him at all, with individual outlets trying to smear him, including over his "controversial" stance on the Ukraine conflict.
Tumblr media
The party primaries in the Kentucky gubernatorial race will take place on May 16, while the election itself will be held November 7.
Young ran as a Democratic Party candidate for a seat in the House of Representatives in the November midterms, but was defeated by incumbent Republican Andy Barr. He also ran in the Democratic primaries in gubernatorial elections in 2019 and 2015, and the Democratic primaries for a House seat in 2018 and 2014.
In the 2022 race for the House, Young focused his campaign on three issues - slashing the Pentagon's budget by "at least 60 percent," abolishing the Central Intelligence Agency, which he blamed for getting America into needless wars, and reducing the impact of big money in politics by publicly financing all elections.

Voters think about a lot of things at the polls: immigration, the economy, health care, gun policy, and—more cynically—party affiliation. But education is an issue that doesn’t typically poll near the top of the list, even though it’s often thought of as a bedrock of society. Tony Evers, Wisconsin’s public-schools chief, and the most likely Democratic candidate to take on Governor Scott Walker in November’s gubernatorial election, is banking on the fact that that’s changing.
Evers, 67, isn’t the only educator who says he’s been inspired to seek political office because of the status quo—underfunded schools that have been hit with spending cuts, low teacher pay, and perpetual achievement gaps. Energized by successful teacher strikes in Oklahoma, West Virginia, Kentucky and Arizona, more than 150 teachers—Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike—are running for state-legislative seats this year, according to an analysis by Education Week. And in New Mexico, as Politico noted, education weighs heavily in the governor’s race. Whoever wins that race will immediately walk into a legal fight over funding for what a judge called “an inadequate system,” and both candidates have vowed to revamp the state’s teacher-evaluation practices.
Each of these candidates across the country is betting that a focus on education policy will be enough to make voters care. The answer to that question has never been quite clear, but in a year marked by teacher and student activism, there is a fresh chorus of optimism that the strategy might work.
Wisconsin, a state where candidates are jumping over each other to highlight the education bonafides of their campaigns, will be a significant test case. In June, Governor Walker told the Wisconsin State Journal that he’s “a pro-education governor … I’m going to continue to be a pro-education governor and build off of that.” He has boasted that the state has frozen tuition at the University of Wisconsin-system campuses for the last six years. And he has a stated goal of getting Wisconsin to have the highest high-school graduation rate in the country by 2023—it currently ranks ninth, down seven spots from 2011. And the Democratic primary field is no different. All the candidates support increased funding for schools, and Kelda Roys, a lawyer running for the state’s highest office, has advocated for guaranteed early-childhood education and free two-year college for all residents.
For his part, Evers has had virtually every school-related job you can imagine: He's been a teacher, principal, and superintendent over his more than three decades in education. Running for governor was the farthest thing from his mind just a short few years ago, he says. But that changed after he won a third term as the state’s superintendent of public instruction. “It was clear to me that as much as I love my job as state superintendent—I think it's a very important one—there are things that I just cannot accomplish for the kids of this state in my present role,” he told me. “And I don't believe that Scott Walker will deliver on any promise he has around education.”
He offered a more blunt assessment of his motivations during his party’s state convention. “I am running for governor because I am goddamn sick and tired of Scott Walker gutting our public schools, insulting our hard-working educators, and destroying higher education in Wisconsin,” he said during his stump speech. According to a recent Marist/NBC survey, Evers is leading Walker by 13 points—and an Emerson College survey has him seven points ahead of the two-term incumbent—and he holds large leads over the rest of the Democratic field.
Since Scott Walker took office in 2011, education policy has become a point of tension for the state. Most critics point to Act 10—which limited public employees’, including teachers', ability to bargain with employers over wages and benefits and was enacted shortly after Walker took office—as the first shot of a seven-year-long battle between the governor and the state’s teachers. As many as 100,000 people took to the streets of Madison in protest. Since the law was enacted, median public-teacher pay in the state is down 2.6 percent, districts ratcheted up health-care costs for educators to recoup the millions of dollars that were cut from the state’s budget, and Wisconsin teachers are leaving the profession at a rate above the national average, according to the left-leaning Center for American Progress Action Fund. Public schools in the state have yet to return to 2011 funding levels, adjusted for inflation.
Strangling public-sector unions in Wisconsin has shrunk teachers’ pay and benefits.
And citizens of the state appear to be tired of the cuts to schools too. Nearly three out of every five respondents in a June Marquette University poll of Wisconsin residents said that, if given the choice, they would raise taxes on themselves rather than cut funding to public education.
Higher education has not fared much better under Walker. There was the no-confidence vote in the University of Wisconsin system’s board of regents as well as their president. The proposal to eliminate 13 majors at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Then there was Walker’s 2015 proposal to cut $300 million from the the UW-System; the legislature ultimately voted to cut $250 million and remove some tenure protections. But he did an about-face in 2017, proposing an additional $100 million for the system, which was approved. “There are no clear education goals, and because of that context of not really having a north star, this is how we fumble through education policy in Wisconsin,” Nick Hillman, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin, told me. (Walker’s office did not return a request for comment on his education policy goals if reelected.)
That’s what Evers wants to change. “We have to have a positive vision for the future,” Evers told me. “And my positive vision is around education.”
Heather DuBois Bourenane, the executive director of the Wisconsin Public Education Network, a non-partisan advocacy group for the state’s public schools, told me she thinks that educators and voters alike are seeing Evers' education background as a welcome change. “People view [Evers’] presence in the race with this kind of comforting feeling of relief that there is a grown-up in the room who gets what's going on with our schools and who will do what it takes to protect them,” she says.
Still, Evers’ rise may be attributable just as much to a name recognition advantage he has over other Democratic candidates as it is to his education platform. Evers has already won statewide office three times, after all. But some say candidates like Evers—those who do not energize the progressive base—have run and lost in the past. Mahlon Mitchell, another  Democratic gubernatorial candidate, for instance, called Evers a “retread” of candidates the Democratic party has run time and again, arguing that though he is a good person, he does not excite voters. And he isn’t sold on the fact that education is a winning issue. “There’s no doubt that we’ve got to shore up our public education, but there are so many issues hurting our state besides education,” he told Buzzfeed News.
According to a recent Marquette poll, more than a third of voters are still undecided about which primary candidate to vote for. However, for public education advocates in the state, whatever is bolstering Evers’ candidacy, it’s a good thing.
“The number one thing I hear most as we go around the state talking to school people and parents is that they're just sick and tired of people playing political games with kids in schools,” Bourenane told me. “They just want a time back when we can all just agree to be good to our kids as a minimum level of civility in this new America. You can have at each other with whatever political games you want, but let's just leave schools out of it.”
People in Wisconsin clearly care about education if they would rather tax themselves than cut school budgets. And the support behind the teacher movements that have swept the country this year show that is the case elsewhere as well. What remains unclear is whether that will be front-of-mind for voters at the polls in November.
