One of my favorite things about how Anne Rice writes historical fiction: she doesn't sugar-coat her characters.

As in, there was never going to be any way all these vampires going back 6000 years were going to align with modern sensibilities. They're not savory. They suck.

First off, any male of status from before the Great Depression probably did, in fact, look at an underage girl and think, "she LOOKS like she could grow up cute and interesting, but do I want to wait to ask her dad and risk someone else calling dibs in the meantime?"

Lestat: Killed majestic, beautiful animals that were only trying to feed themselves. To save the lives of people who were counting on him, yeah, but still.

Marius: Literally from ancient Rome, lots of ideals from that time, pederastic relationship with Armand, see above disclaimer about males from prior to the Great Depression.

Armand, Santino, most of the de Landens: I do feel like the Children of Darkness/Satan wouldn't have been founded in our time, as evidenced by Lestat so easily disbanding them with basic Enlightenment talking points, so I think it counts.

Louis: LITERALLY OWNED SLAVES. And not in a bullshit "but I treat them so nice and they'd just be owned by someone mean if not for me!" way, he legit believed this was what black people were for. Until he became a vampire and all humans looked equal(ly foodlike) to him.

Gabrielle: Let other people raise her kids while she became a library hermit.

Maharet and Mekare: Cannibals. Oh, sorry. Respectful cannibals.

Khayman: Nnnot even gonna be sarcastic about this one. He was as much a victim of it as Maharet and Mekare, hence them not blaming him in the slightest. But people today would be put on trial for following an order like that one, so I figure it belongs here.

Daniel: idk probably unprotected gay sex. It was the 70's.

Claudia: Gets a pass. She was five. All the bad shit she does is unrelated to her time.

Mael: Helped keep a vampire captive for years, then proceeded to kidnap someone and force them to become a vampire, all because "idk we're kooky druids and it's our religion."

Everard: Laughs at Benedict for being kidnapped and having his blood stolen. Victim-blaming at its finest.

Akasha and Enkil: I mean, we know what they did, but everyone hated them in their own time, too, so.

Eudoxia: Jesus Christ.

Davis: HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG EVER IN HIS LIFE. /protects him forever #theonlyinnocentvampireprobably

And you know what? I'd take the worst of these over Bill Compton, Damon Salvatore, or Whassisface Cullen fighting for the Confederacy because "the greater good." Like bro. At least the dickheads above are being honest about it and we can judge those parts of them appropriately. You're trying to make us think you were doing something honorable by being vague. We know what you were really fighting for, and so do you.

Moral of the story: If you're gonna be evil, trying to be sneaky about it only makes it worse.

Another thing I love about Anne Rice's characters.

Khayman:

looks like a nice, tender man

feeds by: breaking his victims' bones and sucking bone marrow

Pandora:

looks like a beautiful, gentle woman

feeds by: ripping her victims' heart out of their chest

Thorne:

looks like he can kill you

can actually kill you (but won't do it without a good reason)

feeds by: little drinks

That's literally "cinnamon roll/can kill you" character classification taken to the extreme, and I like it more than I can explain.

Great for fic fodder though — if you're like me and like angst:

But the parting from Daniel had been the worst. Daniel had no eyes for him. Daniel stared only powerful ancient Khayman whom he had taken as a wandering partner, and how he Armand realized that he was glad Daniel was going, that he felt no love for him, no love since the moment that he'd given him the dark gift. "And this my only child, where is he now? I can not call to him. I will not call to anyone."

At one point, Anne Rice really sat down and had Daniel leave Armand... not for Marius... not even for Lestat... but for Khayman!

Thinking about that time when Khayman showed up to Lestat’s concert and in between THIRSTING for Armand and watching the show he let Mael sneak up to him and poke at his hand and went out of his way to MAKE SURE Lestat wrote out for him later that it was like a DOG SNIFFING HIS BUTT

For the record - him also comparing it to the famous Fingering of the Christussy had me ROLLING

Also, you just know that if Lestat’s whole ego hadn’t just been steamrolled like a Cheeto he would have been at least a little put out that this man traveled 2000 miles to see him and spent all the time at the concert wondering why Armand was so cute

VC characters as cat breeds

Louis:

Louis would be a Bombay cat as they both have strong family attachments and are suitable with children. They are perfectly happy being indoors, providing their needs are met and tend to prefer quieter environments. Also, Bombays have black fur and sometimes green eyes – Louis has black hair green eyes. Basically they look the same.

Lestat:

Lestat is a Norwegian Forest cat, due to their friendly nature and being good with people. They're very interactive/sociable with loads of energy and like a family environment (think Lestat during PL era). They also love to play.

Claudia:

Claudia is a Tortoiseshell cat. They are often described as being 'divas', which I feel can been attributed to Claudia in her own way. They like things done according to them and can have a bit of a quick temper. They can also be inclined to lash out at their owners(/parents) with an 'increased aggression' and an interest in prey.

Armand:

Armand would be a Russian Blue cat because as well as the similar origins (the cats are Russian, Armand is Ukrainian), they share a 'curious but calm' nature. They can also be 'affectionate but not clingy' (though I feel Armand certainly has 'clingy' moments depending on the person/surroundings) and are very intelligent. They are playful when comfortable around others and can be loving. They generally become attached to one particular person, forming a deep connection with them.

Marius:

Marius is 100% a Maine Coon in my eyes. Maine Coons are one of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America, and Marius is an old bitch at 2,000 years old, soooo ya. They are often known as gentle giants and are loyal to their family, though they can be cautious ( but not necessarily mean) towards strangers. Due to their gentleness, they are good around others, including children (not like that in regards to Marius. He took boys under his wing in Venice remember and gave them good lives). They also have a fascination with water (again, Marius lived in Venice, Aegean etc).

Pandora:

Pandora would be a British Shorthair cat as they're not necessarily overly playful or active, but they are devoted and sweet - natured to those they love as well as being good around others. They don't like being in the air and much prefer being on the ground (the cats don't like being picked up/carried and Pandora doesn't like flying).

Daniel:

Daniel is a Persian cat due to their tendency to be generally quiet. They can be close and affectionate towards people they know (for some reason this made me think of Devil's Minion when Armand goes away for a while and Daniel starts to miss him. Or when Daniel runs off only to get Armand to take him back home eventually).

Quinn:

Quinn would be a Siberian cat. They have an easy - going, friendly, playful and adventureous nature. They're very social and love to be in an active family household. They also like water (Quinn goes out in the swamps? Bit of a reach but hey).

Khayman:

Khayman is a Scottish Fold through and through. They are both good - natured, placid and affectionate as well as being able to adjust easily to a changed environment. They also hate to be alone.

Gabrielle:

Gabrielle is just a straight up Tabby/Tom cat. A basic cat. A cat kinda cat. They are independent and love to roam around looking for girls. They can be territorial and aggressive. I also personally believe Gabrielle would appreciate being a male tom cat. It's very gender of her. Being a straight up dude looking for gals.
