KHR - Chapter 4: Expulsion Crisis
I remember how ludicrous I found Nezu - and yes I still remember his name - let's see how angry this makes me now, as an adult.
Who let this guy anywhere near a teaching position. Wouldn't trust him with a pet rock. Calling a child 'a burden on society' and saying 'is there any reason for such trash to exist?' in front of the whole class with a smug look on his face. I mean I know things are rough in Japanese schools, but would this actually happen? Or is it a comedy exaggeration?
Either way, Nezu is not fit to be a teacher.
Gokudera immediately being threatening and spilling sensitive information out in public...oh dear - making things even more difficult for Tsuna (let's face it tho, that's his purpose this early in).
I love how Tsuna's greatest problem with getting expelled is that he won't be able to see Kyouko again - very teenager of him!
And here's Leon's first significant appearance! Showing off his suspiciously magic abilities as well as Tsuna's observation talent - something that will become Hyper Intuition (and it's kind of supported by canon that other people don't notice Reborn is Reborn when he's wearing his various costumes, but Tuna does...so this is also and example of something that started out as comedy and evolved into a power in a magic fire shounen manga)
'Reborn is teaching me all the basics of assassination' I wonder if this will ever come back? Just the image of Gokudera stuffing himself in that small cupboard with Reborn probably drinking coffee and looking smug is hilarious.
Gokudera is so earnest in wanting to help Tsuna ;o; still can't read the room and actually do what Tsuna would truly like, but he's trying! (more than anyone else so far) - also, doesn't listen to Tsuna when he protests immediately…*sigh*
Nezu setting them up and getting praised by another teacher for it… ugh...the standards in Namimori Middle are real low.
Tsuna's despondency may be selfish, but this is also a situation he's not at fault for, Gokudera got him into this trouble (and Reborn and Nezu) so I don't blame him for being fourteen. Gokudera is also thoughtless and casually dismissive, but somehow I expect more from him - maybe due to knowing he's had more actual life experience? Hmm.
Reborn is here to threaten (and shoot) Tsuna into trying!
Leon hops on no problem and Tsuna in his Dying Will state intuitively knows how to use Leon's transformation? Interesting…
I love how Gokudera just goes 'I was waiting for you Boss!' no doubt that Tsuna would follow him despite his protests. (though that may be putting on bravado). And then getting amazed at Tsuna using Leon dowsing rod, 'sublime' indeed Gokudera!
Interesting to see that depending on the area you're shot at, the Deathperation bullets have different effects - though I assume this is only when you're in Dying Will mode...I do believe that these specifics never come into play again after the initial introduction chapters.
Nezu going back on his word does not surprise me at all.
Neither does Gokudera's cool-headed verbal smack down.
Gokudera's lack of self-worth shows it's face for the first time, as does his actual intelligence and academic smarts.
Tsuna complaining about a 'pack of idiots getting bigger' and Kyoko staying away because of that, but Tsuna, my boy, it's not like you were doing well on your own haha.
Reborn telling Tsuna to learn from Gokudera is funny knowing Gokudera can't teach - if I remember right he's too technical and cannot figure out how to explain to someone at Tsuna's level or of Tsuna's type of intelligence.

Also, in edgy Xanxus speak, this is very revealing. “You’re late” (おせーぞ) ….so what, you were waiting? And you’re mad about it too, how worried were you? I thought you were laughing about him being dead two seconds ago! So not cool 😭😭
The anime filler writers (who added a lot of other XS fan service) reused this “you’re late” line as well, when they reunite after the Millefiore siege. Keeping tabs on one disposable pawn in particular I see…💀

I might have to dive deep into the manga to do this drawing, but I’ve been wanting to do an art piece based off this one panel in an early chapter from Katekyou Hitman Reborn! where Tsuna threatens to kill everyone if they don’t eat Kyouko’s cookies, but instead it’s Michelle making it very clear she’ll fucking waste anyone in Aedis Knight Academy if they don’t compliment Celia’s cooking.
#it was a scanlated chapter set before the manga made the transition from 'episodic comedy' to 'serialized drama/comedy'#and being fan translated it's going to be more vulgar than an official translation in a teen-demographic SJ manga#but that panel ALWAYS stuck with me#and years later i finally found an OTP and i'm like 'i HAVE to do this w/ miss michelle bouquet'#i can't find the chapter atm. maybe somebody else might know#now that i think about it it's been at least over a decade since i last touched khr#and i'm surprised it still hasn't been given an official english translation#i can't remember where i left off on it (future arc iirc?) so it's definitely going to warrant a reread

Can’t believe the German translation made me believe for 10+ years that Dr Shamal was wanted in 2062 states instead of being wanted for molesting 2062 women.
I got lowkey disappointed that Chuta never encountered Dr Shamal in a holding cell in space prison, or there, at least, being a Wanted poster of Shamal somewhere in the background for nothing orz

Rereading the KHR manga, and I'm pretty sure I've read this headcannon somewhere else before but...
I'm convinced that after Reborn got turned into an Arcobaleno, to deal with the stress, he decided to see just how many ways he could fuck with the world and get away with it. Hence the absurd number of costumes and nicknames. 🤣🤣🤣

KHR - Chapter 3: Hayato Goludera
Just a glance at the chapter title and I'm hearing his character OST. Oh KHR, you'll always be a part of me.
Edgy boy enters the scene in anime classic 'new student entrance' scene. And promptly takes a left into 'bad boy sighting'.
I remember thinking Hayato's hair was brown for a good long while, until I saw color covers, and I think that was a few volumes away, maybe even as late as Koukyo. And I can hear you say 'but it's grey on the cover??' yeah, it is, but I read KHR digitally through fan scans, there were no color covers there, not for a while.
Wow, the mere existence of scary upperclassmen shows how early this is, Hibari's iron grip on Namimori has not been developed yet, but I, as an old fan, immediately thought 'where's Hibari-san?' Because I feel like Hibari beats up and recruits most of these guys into his Disciplinary Committee.
It is hilarious in hindsight that Hayato even believed he could inherit Vongola. This is of course early-installment plot inconsistency. Before Amano even came up with blood inheritance of Vongola and the magic surrounding that. The comedy roots are showing.
I do appreciate the chain-smoking Gokudera of the manga than the censored version of the anime.
Reborn shows up and mentioned that Hayato is a 'member of the family' which we later know is untrue. He's an independent, this is either early-installment or merely Reborn lying to Tsuna - lol, not like Tsuna would know. And then Reborn straight up lies to Hayato that he can really become Vongola boss if he kills Tusna…
So it can go either way.
Poor Tsuna is so confused. They've got a script to a dramatic showdown of two heirs and he just wants to go home and read manga. I can relate. Amano-sensei is trying to make Tsuna's desperation seem comical and maybe even whiny, but I can totally relate to Tsuna's refusal to cooperate with these shenanigans.
Gokudera looking so serious with a mouthful of cigarettes is hilarious. He's trying so hard to look cool and dangerous and I'm over here worrying about choking hazard and laughing at him.
Honestly, Tsuna has the right reaction to dynamite.
Run away.
I like how Gokudera seems to notice Tsuna getting shot in the head and is then confused with the way he just 're-born's and starts snuffing out his dynamite. Naturally, in this situation, he starts panicking and overplays his hand.
His face when one dynamite stick slips him and he knows he can't catch that is shock and then letting go of off all of them - accepting his fate.
Tsuna doesn’t accept his fate tho.
The way his face transforms from shock to awe and then happiness at seeing Tsuna is very cute I got to say.
Ah, so Gokudera never thought to 'presume to be the next boss' but that still doesn't discount the fact that he even thought it was possible. Are they messing with Tsuna or early-installment plot inconsistency? Probably both.
The way he outright rejects Tsuna's desire to 'just remain classmates' is...hmm. Well, Tsuna is my fave and I don't like the way no one listens to him - this is chapter 3 so this is comedy, but with hindsight it's a bit painful.
Omg, these upperclassmen are SO WEIRD given what I know about Hibari.
...But they are only there to make Gokudera Hayato look cool and they've served their purpose.

Hi Izzy! I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but why does Ganauche III have a Sun Guardian flame bond with Vongola Nono? And why is it uneven/unhealthy? I've reread Umei's fics and KHR and I can't see where the bond was stated.
Long story short, Ganauche the 3rd really wanted to belong -in fic he was originally meant to go to one of Nono's sons as a Guardian- and Vongola Nono seemingly accepted him once he needed a new Lightning post-Cradle.
So Ganauche went all in and Nono went very superficial.
Hence the uneveness of it.
As for why it's uneven/unhealthy well... okay. So they accepted the power imbalance ie Nono is Ganauche's boss.
However it's also well known that Flame Bonding isn't just Boss and Subordinate; the other Flames are Valued for their abilities and insights and connections. Political Appointments especially are valued for their insights and connections and abilities. Ganauche was meant to be a Political Appointment. His famiglia invested in his Flame Training.
That Nono and Ganauche actually Bonded? Ganauche's famiglia was thrilled. (Gotta remember that in-fic, depending on fic, Lambo got all but sold to Tsuna through the CEDEF contract to accomplish getting one of their famiglia members into Tsuna's immediate circle.)
Nono however, only truly values two of his Guardians, Coyote and Nougat. You know, the only two who are his age. The others, eh.
They're there. They've sworn loyalty and obey. They're trusted with tasks and to see them done, or enable Nono to be able to do them himself, by whatever means may be necessary.
Ganauche... well.
Even in the little we see him in the manga, he gets stuck with the more menial stuff. Like you could tie that into in-fic Lightning training being shit and not expecting much out of someone who was trained in the Vongola Lightning training program on Nono's part.
So Nono's not really valuing anything of what Ganauche brings to the Vongola and to him, as Nono Vongola or even as Timoteo personally.
Which is shitty employer behavior and more shitty when you're basically a version of soul bound to another. Especially as it appears that Nono doesn't respect Ganauche as an individual in fic, as Ganauche has been dumped by girlfriends by missing dates for being at Nono's beck and call. For again, menial stuff.
When you have a relationship and one party fails to respect the other's needs and wants, that is a boundary violation. Is this inherently unhealthy or abusive? No. Sometimes it's called being an asshole. Is it still emotional neglect to a person who should be brought into your confidences because you're now spiritually bound together? Yes. Is it disrespect to Ganauche's person? Yes. His position? Yes. His famiglia? Yes.
Ganauche's relationship with Nono isn't actively and purposefully abusive. It's neglectful and mostly accidentally demeaning. It is harmful to Ganauche's mental state and his social life over time.
Tl; dr: Ganauche wants a real Guardian and Sky relationship and Nono just wants a placeholder to do stuff for him sometimes.

Like khr is a pretty flawed manga/anime, it has pacing and tone issues, it side lines the female characters and a few parts and arcs feel rushed. But! It is filled with so much potential and warmth! I hope you enjoyed it, reading your reactions was great and reminded me why I loved it at the time, I might give it a reread.
Yeah I adored the show overall even with the obvious flaws. I honestly think that, issues aside, Tsuna specifically has some of the best main character growth/progression I've seen and the cast in general is an excellent collection of characters.
