On Grizabella’s day, I’m going to force you all to listen to Laurie Beechman’s performance of “Memory”; specifically:

Her guest appearance on The Phil Donahue Show, soon after her cancer returned for the final time in 1995. 

And then her performance in the record breaking performance of CATS in June of 1997, while she was still undergoing treatment. Beechman passed away in March of the following year at the age of 44.

It is genuinely mind boggling to think that Laurie Beechman was playing this role up until a few months before she died. And Laurie very much knew she was dying. And every night she sang a song called Memory and ascended to heaven. What must have that been like for her? It's like when Roger Rees was doing The Visit as he was actively dying. It's truly crazy.

West Bank Nights// BE MORE CHILL Closing, August 11th 2019

From a series celebrating some of my favorite nights at West Bank Cafe, l present the closing night of BE MORE CHILL on Broadway. I have never been as emotionally and physically exhausted as I was in August of 2019. As sad as I was that BE MORE CHILL was ending it’s Broadway run (much sooner than I had hoped and, if I may be a little bold, much sooner than our show deserved), I was so proud of how we went out. I will always be grateful that I got to stand on a Broadway stage surrounded by my greatest friends singing “The Goodbye Song” to a packed house. Jason has sung “The Goodbye Song” countless times and a good percentage of them were at The Laurie Beechman Theatre, so it only made me sense that we’d end up at the West Bank.

Steve Olsen knew how much the evening meant to me and he literally closed down the entire restaurant so that we could take over and mourn and celebrate all over the place. The only person in the restaurant who was not part of BE MORE CHILL was Andrè DeShields, who showed up to have dinner with some High School friends unaware we were partying there, and he stayed anyway and partied with us. It was the most BE MORE CHILL celebrity encounter imaginable and it was classic West Bank.

In a time that was filled with great sadness and anger and disappointment, that night at the West Bank felt like a true release, like the warmest, most earned party of all time. It was melancholy and explosive and the happiest funeral I’ve ever been to.
