In 1989, two seperate comedic fantasy series starring a headstrong teenaged sorceress began (Well, "began in 1989" is a fairly loose technicality for one of the series, and the original series is significantly outlived by its spinoff, but y'know. details). Thirty-plus years later and these two girls are still around. Despite that, there's surprisingly little common ground between Puyo Puyo and Slayers otherwise. Among other things, Arle Nadja and Lina Inverse are very different characters. The former is much more of a straight-laced hero compared to the short-tempered, greedy, and selfish latter (affectionate, to both). Could Arle cast Dragon Slave on her own? Yeah, I'd bet on it. Would she? Absolutely not. Synchronicity is fun, is what I'm getting at.

Writers Guild West Official: Era of Hollywood Mergers Hastened the Strike

Laura Blum-Smith, the Writers Guild of America West’s director of research and public policy, considers the strike a result of a tsunami of Hollywood mergers that has handed studios and streamers the power to its exploit workers.

“Harmful mergers and attempts to monopolize markets are a recurring theme in the history of media and entertainment, and they are a key part of what led 11,500 writers to go on strike more than 100 days ago against their employers,” Blum-Smith said on Thursday at an event with the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice over new merger guidelines unveiled in July.

She pointed to Disney, Amazon and Netflix as companies that “gained power through anticompetitive consolidation and vertical integration,” allowing them to impose “more and more precarious working conditions, increasingly short term employment and lower pay for writers and other workers across the industry.” But she sees revisions to the merger guidelines that address labor concerns a key part of the solution to prevent further mergers in the entertainment industry moving forward.

“The FTC and DOJ’s new draft merger guidelines are part of a deeply necessary effort to revive antitrust enforcement,” she added. “Compared with earlier guidelines, the new ones are much more skeptical of the idea that mergers are the natural way for companies to grow. And they focus more on the various ways mergers hurt competition, including how mergers impact workers.”

In July, the FTC and DOJ jointly released a new road map for regulatory review of mergers. They require companies to consider the impact of proposed transactions on labor, signaling that the agencies intend to review whether mergers could negatively impact wages and working conditions. FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya, who was joined by agency chair Lina Khan, said in a statement about the guidelines that “a merger that may substantially lessen competition for workers will not be immunized by a prediction that predicted savings from a merger will be passed on to consumers.” Historically, transactions have been considered mostly through the lens of benefits to consumers.

The guidelines lack the force of law but influence the way in which judges consider lawsuits to block proposed transactions. They also tell the public how competition enforcers will assess the potential for a merger’s harm to competition.

Antitrust enforcers have steadily been taking notice of negative impacts to labor as a result of industry consolidation. “We’ve heard concerns that a handful of companies may now again be controlling the bulk of the entertainment supply chain from content creation to distribution,” Khan said last year during a listening forum over revisions to the guidelines, in a nod to anticompetitive conduct by studios that led to the Paramount Decrees. “We’ve heard concerns that this type of consolidation and integration can enable firms to exert market power over creators and workers alike.”

Adam Conover, writer and WGA board member, said in that April 2022 forum that his show Adam Ruins Everything was killed by AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner in 2018 when TruTV’s parent company forced the network to cut costs. He stressed that a handful of companies “now control the production and distribution of almost all entertainment content available to the American public,” allowing them to “more easily hold down our wages and set onerous terms for our employment.” It’s not just writers that are impacted by an overly consolidated Hollywood either, he explained. After Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, he said that the studios pushed the industry into ending backend participation and trapping actors in exclusive contracts preventing them from pursuing other work.

Blum-Smith said that aggressive competition enforcement is necessary as “Wall Street continues to push for more consolidation among our employers despite the industry’s history of mergers that failed to deliver any of the consumer benefits they’ve claimed that left writers and audiences worse off with less diversity of content and fewer choices.”

“More mergers will leave writers with even fewer places to sell their work and tell their stories and the remaining companies will have even more power to lower pay and worsen working conditions,” she warned. “Strong enforcement against mergers is essential to protect workers in media and workers across the country and these guidelines are an important step in the right direction.”

You had met Pablo when you were early on in uni. As uni student scrambling around place to place with messy hair and loungewear on, you had never expected to meet the Pablo Gavi. But you had, and he was smitten. He was grabbing the team’s coffee orders from a local café (as commanded to by pedri) when he accidentally picked up the lid of Ferran’s iced caramel macchiato haphazardly sloshing the contents of it onto a girl studying on her computer. That girl was you. You had been soaked, he instantly pulled off his hoodie, offering it to you, his undershirt coming up a bit in the process causing your eyes to linger. You took it and explained to him it wasn’t a problem and just an honest mistake. The rest was history.

Today, you were going to another one of his matches, and you knew it would be hard. It was El Clásico, and you didn’t want to admit it to yourself, but Real Madrid had been shaping themselves up to quite a team. You wished Pablo good luck by shooting him a quick text with a few hearts. You had told him you wouldn’t be able to make it to this game because of some exams for your major. You hadn’t told him when the exam got cancelled due to your professor landing tickets to El Clásico himself . You wanted to support him and surprise him and thought of no better way than putting on his jersey and tying your hair back in the loose braid he loved so much. You knew just him seeing you would motivate him for the game more. after Finishing up your hair, you laced up your nike blazers and tucked in his too big jersey a bit. You were ready for the game.

You arrived at Camp Nou a half hour before kick off. It was chilly, but nothing a barcelona scarf couldn’t fix. As you made your way up to your seat, you saw the other wags mingling among each other. As soon as Mikky saw you, she stopped her conversation and squealed. You two had been instant best friends, just those people you know click. She wrapped you in a tight hug before talking.

“you told me you couldn’t come today!” she exclaimed.

“Professors a fan, He got tickets, class was cancelled!” you explained

she smiled with a knowing look, and wrapped her arm around you. You two looked iconic and you knew it.

Soon enough, the match started, excitement erupting from all over the stands. You were holding your breath, hoping, praying Barcelona would take home the win.

After taking an early lead, Real Madrid looked comfortable. Jude Bellingham had managed to get a goal in through the incredible wall that was ter Stegen. Mikky and you sighed deeply and yelled for your boys. After a missed shot by Vini Jr, ter Stegen made an incredible pass to Frenkie, who bolted up the field like a gazelle. He looked quick, saw Gavi open and passed him the ball in a brilliant cross. Gavi saw his opportunity and shot in the left corner of the goal, all the way in the back of the net. You and Mikky gripped each other and cheered as Frenkie and Gavi celebrated. Frenkie pointed up to you and Mikky while talking to Pablo and you saw his face light up. You were his cheerleader, always cheering for your darling boy. He made a heart and pointed up at you, his smile huge now. You were sure that tonight Gavi would be eager to tell you and everyone else all about that goal and how he saw you up there.

as the first half rushed by, nobody else scored. The referee blew the whistle for halftime and the whole team was ecstatic. They were tied, but Gavi’s goal had given them hope.

As the boys poured out of the tunnel ready for kickoff of the second half, you noticed gavi take a seat on the bench. ‘nooo!’ you wanted to scream, but you knew Xavi knew better and had a bigger plan.

But no, as the minutes ticked by, no plan came. Defense was getting tired and offense was lacking opportunities. Real madrid was definitely taking advantage of this rushing not one, not two, but three goals into the back of the net. You sighed. Watching Gavi fidget on the bench didnt help you, and you doubted Mikky felt any ounce better with Frenkie being benched a few minutes ago either.

As the referee blew his final whistle, you sighed. A 4-1 loss was heavy. Especially for Barcelona. Mikky and you waited patiently for your respective boyfriends before saying goodbye. The ride home with Pablo wasn’t unpleasant. He held your hand and you two often felt comfort in the silence. You wanted to offer comfort and tell him he played amazing. You knew that would only make him feel worse. You opened the door to his apartment and he stepped inside with you.

“Pablito,” you start, and are engulfed by a quietly breathing Pablo who rocks back and forth like that with you for a few minutes.

You nod, understanding the need for silence and comfort and continue the long tight hug. You tilt your head up to leave a few kisses on his neck and jawline. He meets your lips in a long passionate one. Once you pull away, he wraps you up in his arms again.

“Thank You,” He mumbles against your forehead before kissing it briefly. And you wouldn’t have it any other way.

ELISSA SKIRT VARIATIONS

Green with pleated hem: The most common version, as this is closest to the Elissa design Maria Bjørnson revamped for Christine around 1988, making her costume closer to that of Carlotta. Depicted is Emilie Kouatchou (Broadway) and Valerie Link (Hamburg).

Green without pleated hem: Since the original design actually didn’t feature any skirt at all, just the hanging tabs, a plain dark green base was added in the original West End production, and variants of this appeared in many of the earliest productions in Europe and Japan, along with alternating red and green tabs. Japan is the only one to have kept this design. Depicted is Maria Kesselman (original West End) and Haru Kasumatsu (Nagoya).

Red without pleated hem: As a variant of the “plain” green skirts there were also a handful of “plain” red skirts in the early European productions. Some of these has survived to this day. Depicted is Lina Mendes (Sao Paulo) and Julia Möller (Madrid).

Red with pleated hem: The rarest of them all, as this is just a pimped version of the previous category, and has only appeared in Denmark. I believe it was as simple as finding a way to make the skirts longer for their tall Christines. But it turned into stunning creations. Depicted is Susanne Elmark (Copenhagen) and Viktoria Krantz Tocca (Copenhagen).

Golden / multi-coloured: Another common category, as this is how the UK skirts looked in the 1990s, and both the Canadian and Australian skirts were modeled after these. Many a remodeled skirt also ends up very golden or multi-coloured due to layers and layers of decorations. Depicted is Sandra Kassman (Copenhagen) and Ana Marina (World Tour).

hi Lina! Just out of curiosity but what is your opinion on Naomi Hunter, especcially in mgs4?

Okay. First of all, I'll always have time to say that I hate Naomi. But I'll explain why.

If we go back only to her era and role as a character in "Metal Gear Solid," She is consistent and quite self-conclusive; a dark character, driven by revenge. I already hate her enough for what she did with Foxdie and for injecting it into Snake… but well, things happen.

Regarding what is narrated in Nastasha Romanenko's book and in "Metal Gear Solid 2," She turned into… crap (in my POV). Naomi manipulated Richard Ames and got involved in the project he had to create Foxdie (Something briefly mentioned in MGS) and the creation of Vamp's immunity is directly her fault.

Knowing all that, let's go to MGS4; knowing the modus operandi she had with Richard Ames (who discovered the truth through conversations via codec), it's even more obvious that she'll do exactly the same thing to Hal. She is a femme fatale, used to using men as a tools for her own purposes. This is an unnecessary pain for him.

I also hate her "Mary Sue" side here: She knows how to do everything out of nowhere and is even smarter than Hal? God, please give me a break! Why did Kojima and his scriptwriter do that? You told us that Hal is almost breathing and hacking the Pentagon with air, creating things and coming up with clever solutions, and then you put him in a corner just to give backup to Snake? in my eyes, they reduced Hal a lot as a character in MGS4, even though I love him deeply in his older days, I would like to see him more involved in the hacker stuff, along with Sunny and without Naomi. It might be more interesting to see them fight for a solution than to have them be under the shadow of her "highness" Naomi.

And I really think that bringing her back was absolutely unnecessary; I still think that part of her lore could have been carried on by new characters because if we remember, in Nastasha's book they tells us that she has the COMPLETE Foxdie research (Please remember that Foxdie was not entirely Naomi's invention. She joined the project in order to make "her" intervention and tilt the project's progress in HER favor): they could have easily introduced a new scientist or a couple of new characters.

I really hate all this poorly executed character "cleansing" in her, she feels like crap to me; SHE IS NOT GOOD, NEVER WAS, AND NEVER WILL BE: let her be crap until MGS in peace. I could talk about it for hours. I feel like there's so much to explain and dissect, but this is the most condensed version I've managed to do, and for it to be understood in my shitty English.

“Hey! Movie star in the corner! Butt over here, stop lollygagging around!”

“You’re trying too hard,” you call back in response, standing nevertheless and stretching before heading over to where your best friend, Lina, is working on setting up the bar before opening. Bending down to open a few cabinets, you yell into the other room, “Hey, Pen, we still on to perform tonight?”

“Depends on how dissatisfied the crowd is with you stopping their music,” your boss shoots back. Savage.

Penny Benjamin, your boss and friend-slash-mentor, was your saving grace. She had hired you around the time she bought the bar, The Hard Deck, a few years ago from some of the money in the settlement of the divorce with her ex-husband, Darren—or as you and your coworkers call him, Darren the Douche. Creative, you’re well aware. Penny was the only reason you weren’t on the streets, giving you a place to put your feet down and start working to pay back the colossal mountain of student loan debt you had acquired over four years of undergrad.

You’ve given up on grad school entirely.

Time flies as you, Lina, and your coworkers Sam, Evan, Hannah, and Cody finish prepping for opening rush. Penny has six of you on staff—everyone one rotates days off, and today, a Monday, is Sawyer’s. Yours is Thursday, so only three days to go.

Soon enough, the bar opens. It’s the hotspot Navy bar in the area, uniforms filling the place as it gets later on into the evening.

“Lina!” Sam hollers suddenly as she hurries to the bar, calling your name as well and snapping you out of the zone. “Penny gave the all-clear.”

You grin, high-fiving the blonde. “Perfect.” Hopping the counter, you wink at your boss as she comes to take your place, prompting her to shake her head in fond exasperation. The jukebox cuts out suddenly, causing groans as everyone looks to where Evan unplugged it while the rest of you head to the piano that doubles as a makeshift stage for your purposes. One night after the bar had closed, on Penny’s night off (Tuesdays), the half-drunken six of you had discovered that you were all musically inclined. That led to the creation of a band; practices were bi-weekly after closing Tuesday and at Hannah’s apartment on Friday before work.

Picking up the mic, you tap it to gain the attention of the bar’s patrons, who quickly grow excited as they realize what’s about to go down. Despite missing a bassist—Sawyer—who doubles with backing vocals, you’re still going to make some music and it’s going to sound good. It’s a sporadic event, so when given the chance, your group grabs it whole-heartedly.

“Hey, everyone, how we doing tonight?” You greet to cheers and whoops as the band begins playing in the background. You grin, waiting the necessary measures before coming in.
