The main reason I didn't enjoy Spellbound by Allie Therin is that the more the characters learned about each other, the more it felt like they were ignoring red flags in order to make it all work (for more details, refer to the review linked above). I prefer books where, as the characters learn more they find out that either they're more compatible than they thought, or at least that what seemed like insurmountable issues can be substantially erased or mitigated in a durable and mutually supportive way.
Please enjoy this non-exhaustive list of books and series I've enjoyed where it originally seems like it won't work and then it does as the characters learn more about each other. Most of these are fantasy and/or romance.
Authors who frequently write this kind of story:
Most things Seanan McGuire writes, if there's a relationship it tends to be this style.
October Daye
InCryptid
T. Kingfisher's World of the White Rat books
Clockwork Boys / The Wonder Engine
Swordheart
Paladin's Grace / Paladin's Strength / Paladin's Hope
Most of what Ilona Andrews writes:
Kate Daniels and associated books
The Edge books
Stand-alone books:
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
The Lights of Prague by Nicole Jarvis
The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa
Bone Weaver by Aden Polodoros
Curses by Lish McBride
The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk
Peter Darling by S.A. (Austin) Chant
A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft
Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell (stand-alone story in a shared universe)
Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell (stand-alone story in a shared universe)
Ongoing series:
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows
Completed series:
The Celestial Kingdom Duology by Sue Lynn Tan
Daughter of the Moon Goddess
Heart of the Sun Warrior
Witchmark by C.L. Polk (Book 1 of The Kingston Cycle trilogy)

Loving Curses by Lish McBride. There have been many great lines, but I'll just leave this one:
"Quite right," Ellery said. "In my country, it's considered acceptable to launch people who show up unannounced from a trebuchet. We all keep them by our doors as a reminder."

(also Ellery is non-binary and awesome)

Redd Reviews: HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER by Lish McBride
Tumblr media
Genre: YA Fantasy
Major Tropes: Song lyrics as chapter titles, average joe finds out he had powers all along
Representation Rating: D (women are as fleshed out as the men (which is to say not much,) has a singular brown secondary character that is somewhat awkwardly written. No disability or queer rep.)
Sam's live is average, ordinary. Other than the fact that his full name is Samhain Corvus LaCroix... and he's never really found a place he belongs. He dropped out of college, works at a fast food restaurant, has a few friends, has hobbies. But nothing about his life has felt right. That is, until he finds out he has latent necromancy powers, gets a hot werehound gf, and finds out about the supernatural world living just out of view of our own.
My Thoughts
I really wanted to like this book. It was one of my husband's adolescent favorites. And I see why he liked it! It's fun and the world seems rich and just... really neat. But honestly? The prose is trite, and the book is written as if for a younger audience than YA (I'm only calling it YA due to an off-page sex scene, some curse words, and a pretty violent death.) The writing is just... elementary. I was constantly bored by the prose even as I was intrigued by the concept of a werewolf/fae hound hybrid.
The romance was cute, even though it comes out of a pretty yikes situation. The character work is okay. It's mostly conceptually that this book shines, as it reveals just a glimpse into a larger world of the supernatural. I really wanted to know more about the supernatural underworld, and sooner. It takes forever for Sam to accept that he's in a supernatural story and therefore it takes forever for the book to show us cool things.
I won't be reading book 2. My husband doesn't remember liking it and if he didn't I can't imagine I will. That said, it was a quick read so if you don't mind dry prose, you might enjoy this book.
At least the author acknowledges that Samhain isn't pronounced like Sam. That made me happy.
Rating: 💀💀.5/5

even though i knew the end by cl polk - a fantastic noir novella about a private detective, a gamble for her immortal soul, and the secrets we keep from each other
devil and the bluebird by jennifer mason-block - a stand-alone that reads like a folk ballad, a young girl trades her voice for an enchanted pair of boots to cross the country to find her sister
the city beautiful by aden polydoros - wonderfully seeped in jewish ghost stories, a teenager is possessed by the murdered spirit of his friend
small town monsters by diana rodriguez wallach - there comes a time when every teen must ask a simple question of what's scarier: the locked basement door or the smiley cult that's gaining power in your town
the conductors by nicole glover - a young woman's past comes back to follow her as series of strange murders strike in her antebellum-era city (hetty x benjy 5ever!!!!)
deep secret by diana wynne jones - one of the most weirdest and lovable books you'll come across. a sff convention! terrible job interviews! a centaur prince!
hold me closer necromancer by lish mcbride - a fry cook learns that he's a necromancer and is unintentionally on someone else's (scarier) turf
the warrior heir by cinda williams chima - after helping his aunt rob a grave, jack confronts his new inheritance as rival wizard houses plot to kidnap him
bitter medicine by mia tsai - she's the descendent of a god and he's not fully human. together, they're a blushing mess of feelings and complicated magic when their jobs collide

CURSES is a Beauty and the Beast retelling which takes a few specific element of the older story: one person cursed to appear as a Beast, and one person who is generally considered beautiful being required to help them break the curse in exchange for forgiving a parent’s trespasses. Onto this basic premise the author has built a small world by which a larger story is supported. I like the story, I like the dynamic between merit and Tevin, between Merit and her various suitors, and generally with her group of friends and collaborators for them to help break the curse with as little meddling from her mother as possible.

What I’m Reading Now: A Little Too Familiar by Lish McBride
Lish McBride is another author that I will buy whatever she writes. I’m so happy she’s trying her hand at romance because she wrote maybe my favorite book Boyfriend ever! Lock from her Firebug series is super dreamy. I can’t wait to read about Declan and Lou.
