(ok enough of that, its time for the main event!!!) he kept those glasses on for longer than i thought aoughh!! rush throwing beverage around! sticky cable choking! hm. its ok. i like the lime color watching 10 and rush fight, it makes me think that maybe oc turning this into a threeway gives 10 an out to lose but not lose his mask to rush thats a very charitable interpretation of the situation though. he also could just be being a funny little rascal oof!! solid table... unbreaking... 10 is so beefy. beef guy. real ooo i love me a good spear oh! orange is back in the ring the old nelson into pockets bit wow what a smooth beach break lmao why is open in-ring meddling legal in a three way i seriously love danhausen's curse-into-dickpunch manuever very mp100 reigan hypnosis punch energy rush trying to mess with 10's mask! are they going to reveal 10's canonically pretty face no! it will not occur. orange wins!

Armadillo’s Heartbroken Rampage - Part 4 - Playlist, DIY Divider, and Notes
In part 1, we talked about the Scheme and the Mastermind. In part 2, we talked about the “Villains” of Armadillo’s emotional state. In part 3, we looked at our Hero and our Bystanders. In this post, we’re going to talk briefly about the QR code playlist and a few notes about the game itself.
Tumblr media
Here’s the link to the playlist on Youtube Music: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-o3dF3RjvIMuE6W5jrmy4t-lptUH-wYJ&feature=share
This playlist is 16 songs long. Why? Because this expansion is based around a single issue of a comic book: Captain America #316.
What kind of playlist do you make for a former supervillain turned pro-wrestler who is having the world’s pity party? Are there even any songs about Armadillos? For this playlist, I went in a less-obvious -- although not exactly subtle -- direction. I made it about Antonio Rodriguez, the man we call the Armadillo.
He’s from San Antonio, Texas, and at the time of this story, he’s probably in the mid-to-late 20s. He’s a proud Mexican-American, and he’s also a young man of his era. He’s also a professional wrestler, so everything he does is for the benefit of the people in the cheap seats at the back auditorium.
Obviously, we’ve gone with a mix of Spanish-language versions of the most anguished pop hits of he 1980s, as well as mariachi covers of metal and hard rock tunes of the era. I think Antonio would appreciate the attempt.
Here’s the playlist ...
1. Lucha - Metalachi
2. Falso Amor (Tained Love) - La Union
3. The Final Countdown - The Mariachis
4. The Avengers (Main Theme) - Mariachi Entertainment System
5. Crazy Train - Metalachi
6. Ring of Fire (Spanish version) - Stephanie Urbina Jones
7. Symphony of Destruction - Metalachi
8. Let The Battle Begin (FFVII) - Mariachi Entertainment System
9. Sweet Child O’ Mine - Metalachi
10. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Mariachis
11. Ace of Spades - Metalachi
12. Rock You Like A Hurricane (Spanish version) - Unprotected Innocence
13. Welcome to the Jungle - Metalachi
14. Habla El Corazón (Listen to Your Heart)  - Roxette (yeah, the original band doing their own song in Spanish)
15. Rock and Roll All Nite - Metalachi
16. No Rompas Mas (Achy Breaky Heart) - Kampesino Musical
I’ll be the first to admit that this isn’t a playlist with a lot of nuance to it, but it is a very fun listen that should last the entire game.
DIY Divider
If there’s one thing that unites the Legendary Marvel fan community, it’s the lack of adequate dividers for additional content and cards. My solution to this is the optional, do-it-yourself, two-fold “greeting card” version that also serves as a card list.
Tumblr media
Design Notes
The central idea behind the Resleeved Project is to try out some new ideas within the framework of the Legendary Marvel deck-building game system. The game is designed to have big bad -- the Mastermind -- and three sets of lesser baddies (2 Villain groups and 1 Henchmen Villain group) that are serving to further the Mastermind’s plans. In this case, I wanted to see what happens if we change those assumptions.
This set is a fairly faithful adaptation of Captain America #316, which is really just Cap (and Hawkeye, to a lesser extent) trying to talk Armadillo down before he does something he’ll regret. For the record, Cap fails. Armadillo does jump off the Empire State Building, but fortunately the fall doesn’t kill him.
You know who does successfully talk the Armadillo out of doing something stupid -- escaping the supervillain prison known as the Vault -- a few years later in Captain America #340? That’s right, it’s Vagabond.
In playtesting this set, we discovered that the scenario is most fun when the outcome isn’t clear right up until the end. There are no Scheme Twists -- at least not as they are typically used -- so this is a largely risk-reward type of challenge. It’s fun, and a nice break from the standard Legendary gameplay. If you play it, and have questions, constructive observations, or other notes, feel free to comment here, or on the BoardGameGeek thread.

Why It Worked: Kung Fu Panda
Tumblr media
Introduction: Kung Fu Panda is a 2008 animated film staring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, James Hong, Jackie Chan and Ian McShane. Directed by John Stevenson and Mark Osborne, the film was released on June 6, 2008 after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15 of that same year. The film went on to receive critical acclaim from critics and audiences (Rotton Tomatoes collected 183 reviews and 87% of them gave and average score of 7.2/10) and grossed $631.7 million on a budget of $130 million. It spawned 2 sequels, 5 shorts, 2 TV shows and 5 video games. It was DreamWorks Animation’s highest grossing non-Shrek film domestically until it was surpassed by How To Train Your Dragon 2 years later (KFP made $215 million in the U.S. and Canada while HTTYD made $217 million domestically). I’ve always enjoyed this movie and as the years went by I’ve come to love it more as an adult. In this post I’d like to explain why this film defied the odds and became one of the best movies from DreamWorks Animation’s filmography.
Tumblr media
The Plot: Kung Fu Panda has a rather bizarre premise even by animation standards. A panda is chosen to be the protector of ancient China (this China has anthropomorphic animals living in it) and must learn to master kung fu before an evil snow leopard comes to his village to reek havoc. To make things even stranger, the leading panda is played by Jack Black, 1 half of the raunchy rock duo Tenacious D and at the time was mostly known for playing the eccentric rock star in School of Rock, the bumbling lucha dore Nacho Libre and Lenny the shark from the polarizing animated film Shark Tale. This sounds like it couldn’t work, and yet the filmmakers pulled it off by making a genuine story about a guy who loves kung fu but feels he’s not good enough to master it even after he’s dubbed the Dragon Warrior. The film goes to great lengths to show Po’s struggle to learn how to be a kung fu master in the most hilarious ways possible. From him losing a tooth to a practice dummy to him being pumbled by the Furious 5 and Shifu during training, Po takes several beatings during the film and the visual gags always land. Speaking of visuals, the animation in this film is some of the best work from DreamWorks Animation and still holds up to this day. The Valley of Peace looks so authentic to ancient Chinese cities and the character animation is so fluid and lively. This is especially true during the fight scenes, which are all nothing short of dope. One scene in particular that stands as one of the best action set pieces in cinema (yes, cinema) is Tai Lung’s prison escape. The tension rises the higher he climbs, the cinematography follows his every movie, he perfectly makes mince meat out of all the rhino guards and just when you think they got him, he turns the tables and annihilates them with their own dynamite. One of the greatest lessons this film teaches is towards the end when Po is given the dragon scroll and he finds that it’s just his reflection. He then learns that his father, Ping the goose, didn’t put any secret ingredient in his Secret Ingredient Soup. Po learns that there’s no secret ingredient not just to the soup but to who he is as a person. He’s already special because Shifu, Oogway and most importantly he himself believed he was special.
Tumblr media
Cast and Characters: Jack Black was not just the best man to voice Po; he was the ONLY man to do this character justice. Everything from Po’s mannerisms, his eccentric attitude and his happy-go-lucky attitude are all because of Jack Black. It’s clear Jack loves voicing the character and it even shows during his most emotional moments. Po feels like such a relatable guy as he has his self doubts but never truly gives up. Dustin Hoffman plays an excellent Master Shifu, making him sound old and grumpy, yet also quirky and funny in parts. The Furious 5 are all integral to the development of Po and stand very strong on their own. It also helps that they’re all played by great actors in their own right. Angelina Jolie brings the perfect amount of sternness to Tigress, Jackie Chan was perfectly comical as Monkey, David Cross was funny and relatable as Crane, Lucy Liu sounded so sweet as Viper, and Seth Rogan brought his best family friendly humor to the role of Mantis. Randall Duk Kim sounded so wise and quirky as Oogway, James Hong was funny and relatable as Ping and the late great Michael Clarke Duncan was especially entertaining as Commander Vachir. Then there’s Tai Lung, who’s most certainly among one of DreamWorks Animation’s best villains. He’s so fierce, intimidating, powerful and also empathetic. His backstory is excellently handled and he’s hyped up brilliantly as this fearsome foe and he does not disappoint. Ian McShane was brilliant as the film’s main baddie, bringing such gravitas and pride to this character.
Tumblr media
Where It Falters: I only have one gripe with the film as a whole: GIVE ME MORE FURIOUS 5!!! I cannot be the only one who thinks these characters could easily hold their own movie. The Secrets of the Furious 5 shorts were good, don’t get me wrong, but I want to see their first mission together, how they learn to be a team and become the masters they are now. I recognize that a spin-off to Kung Fu Panda isn’t going to happen immediately (considering where DreamWorks Animation’s focus is these days) but I’d definitely pay money to see a Furious 5 film.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: Kung Fu Panda is very much one of the prime examples of “don’t judge a book by its cover” personified as a feature film. Despite its odd premise, it makes for a funny, action packed, emotionally resonate and wonderfully written film with great cinematography, amazing animation and stellar voice acting. It very much stands on par with DreamWorks Animation’s best films and is more than worth of its cult status. Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see you soon. Skadoosh! ;)

Fyter Fest: SUCCESS
Tumblr media
I liked this show a lot! Not everything was to my taste, but there was plenty to enjoy. Briefly:
* The Cody vs. Darby Allin match was one of the best wrestling matches I’ve seen in 2019. The crowd was a little subdued for long stretches of it, perhaps being accustomed to more of a flashy style, but I loved the whole thing. Cody, who liked like a giant compared to Allin, was trying to wrestle and old-school (dare I say, Southern) style match, while Allin was trying to shift it to a more familiar indie style, which would be to his advantage. It was a genuine collision of two different approaches to wrestling, and it worked incredibly well. Darby took at least two completely insane bumps I’ve never seen anyone do, and after one of them, Cody contemptuously did push-ups in the ring. THAT’S GOOD OLD SCHOOL VILLAINY. I also loved that this was a time-limit draw, another old school story device. Neither guy lost any face in the match, and the crowd was still excited by the end, which they timed very well (Cody hit his finisher with two seconds left, and thus couldn’t get the three-count). Cody, derided in his initial indie run as “The Three-Star General” for his supposedly pedestrian matches, has stolen the show on both AEW events so far.
* I did not love the post-match run-in by Shawn Spears! Without getting into any of the piping hot takes about unprotected chair shots, I thought it pulled focus from the great wrestling match that just happened, with Darby Allin being turned into kind of an afterthought. I get that they need to advance storylines and right now they don’t have weekly TV to do that, but this felt almost Russo-esque.
* The Moxley-Janela match was really good! Going into it, I wondered how much different an AEW hardcore match was going to be from the WWE template. Like, would they go full indie and have shopping carts and pizza graters and barbecue skewers? The answer is no: we didn’t see any items in this match that would be outside the bounds of a WWE match (except maybe the barbed wire), but it was how the two wrestlers used them that made the difference. The barbed wire spots were wince-inducing without being truly gruesome, the tables were swiftly destroyed, and the barefoot thumbtacks spot at the end was a stroke of sadistic genius. What a first match for Moxley in AEW!
* The women’s triple threat match was a little sloppy at parts, but the whole thing was redeemed by Nyla Rose totally playing against type down the stretch and hitting a truly insane flying guillotine knee drop from the top turnbuckle. She then snapped off a truly brutal German suplex to solidify her status as the early badass of AEW. Yuka Sakazaki and Riho looked a little out of step a few times, but mostly they did well in the role of competitors who also have to compete against the monster opponent.
* One thing AEW has managed to do well so far is put on three and four-way matches that don’t get bogged down the way they do so often in other companies. You know: there’s a three-way match and invariably one person spends most of it outside the ring, effectively turning into a two-person match with occasional run-ins. In the women’s match and in the four-way, AEW’s agents managed to produce matches that actually felt like all the competitors were involved throughout the course of the contests. The four-way was particularly good, and should go a fair distance toward making Jungle Boy a breakout star in the company. He’s got a great look, he’s got unique offense, and his friendship with giant dinosaur man Luchasaurus is the stuff of a marketer’s dreams.
* The six-man tag was fine. I know this is going to sound like I’m complaining that a buffet is too good, but I think I’m full up on matches pitting the Young Bucks against the Lucha Bros for a while. They’re fun, they involve incredible athleticism and exhibitions of timing and skill, but you know what to expect. The bright spot of the match for me was the underappreciated luchador Laredo Kid, who got a lot of quality time as the Lucha Bros’ partner.
* I really did not like the pre-show. The three-way tag match was very good, and I was really happy to see people online reacting with astonishment at Private Party. Those guys are fantastic, and they’re so young. They’re only going to get better. Everything after that match was extremely not my thing. I appreciate they’re trying to do something different with the comedy, and it’s going to be important for them to have something that connects with non-wrestling fans or wrestling-curious fans who aren’t going to want to watch two hours of matches every week. And I certainly don’t expect a company that has two shows under its belt to have a foolproof formula in place. But if they’re going to do comedy, they should really hire actual comedy writers, as much as the idea of writers has become a taboo in non-WWE wrestling. The jokes were flat and most of them centered around the Fyre Fest documentaries, which are really yesterday’s news at this point.
* The librarian thing really died a death with the crowd. I don’t watch Being the Elite or The Road to, so I missed the explanation for this gimmick, but it does not come across well. The constant shushing is so bad it feels almost avant-garde after a while, like it’s actively confrontational with the audience over our expectations for a wrestling show. Then Leva Bates cut a heel promo in defense of books and I wanted to check out. Her match with Allie was decent for a match on a Shine midcard, but Leva’s limitations as a wrestler are pretty much what they’ve always been. The match ended with a totally blown spot that was supposed to be the pay off for the whole “the librarians love books” thing. Terrible.
* I hated the last pre-show match. Every once in a while, you’ll see a super local indie show where one of the sponsors gets to “wrestle,” usually meaning the crowd is treated to the owner of a car dealership standing on the apron for most of a tag match, until getting the chance to throw a weak clothesline and cover a hated midcard baddie for the three count. AEW, though, decided they should do that same thing but with the non-wrestler sponsor being put in a 10-minute hardcore match. I’m sure some people liked this. I am not among them. This match inadvertently featured the gnarliest spot of the night (until the Darby Allin coffin drop onto the edge of the apron JESUS DARBY WHAT ARE YOU THINKING DO YOU WANT TO DIE YOU HAVE A LOVING SLEAZY WEIRDO SPOUSE PLEASE THINK OF HER) when the fighting games convention organizer guy did a German suplex that dumped Nakazawa directly on his neck. Thank God Japanese wrestling training involves constant neck bridges! This is why super local indies only let the sponsor guys throw a weak clothesline: because they know that non-wrestlers doing wrestling moves endangers everyone’s safety.
* Other things: Commentary seemed to be markedly better for the most part, thanks to the addition of “Goldenboy” who might be a video game person? (sorry video game people I am no use here) ... JR is really straying into Grampa Gaffes territory with his praise of “Oriental” wrestlers and blurting out that the women wrestlers all seem like his daughters ... the camera direction still needs work, with the director missing a number of big spots ... Kenny Omega running in to pummel Moxley after the final match was good stuff ... the Super Smash Brothers’ “Dark Order” thing is treading perilously close to Black Scorpion territory ... this was just shy of four hours, counting the pre-show, and I found myself wanting more when it was over ... a friend was over watching with me and we found ourselves yelling at the screen in a way we haven’t done with televised wrestling in a long time

AEW Fight for the Fallen
A slightly frustrating night for the nascent promotion nonetheless featured plenty of quality wrestling and serves as a decent ‘go-home show’ for August’s All Out.
- All Out loomed pretty large over the entire card, even before the show -- Page and Omega both faced roadblocks en-route to the bigger show, Bucks/Rhodes brothers against brothers was built mostly on a few jokes on BTE -- but the promises made for August were all tantalizing. - Really liked the venue, amphitheater style seating and open air is a novelty I’d like to see more of,  the entrance ramp level with the ring paid off a few times. Wondering if they’ll adopt a more ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach for TV, but it’s been interesting noticing the tweaks to production. Entrance music still needs to be turned up on the feed. - End of the show was unnecessarily awkward and probably didn’t need to be part of the broadcast, which apparently confused Cody/Kenny/Everybody in the ring... Obviously that’s one of the things to take a look at when they’re debriefing. - Aubrey Edwards had herself a night, love how she gets between the wrestlers and doesn’t stand in the corner wishing she could do something. - Way too much A-E-Dub’ chanting. Cheer the wrestlers. Boo the heels. *Pre-Card Sonny Kiss v The Librarian Peter Avalon (**1/2) - Maybe it’s because Avalon’s a little better in the ring than his counterpart, but this was the first time the Librarians have clicked properly -- the crowd is more than ready to pump up anyone who can knock these heaters around, and Sonny Kiss took the opportunity and ran. He was non-stop impressive from entrance to pinfall and the crowd ate it up.  Dr Britt Baker DMD & Riho v Shoko Nakajima & Bea Priestley (**) - Britt and Bea have shared the ring exactly once before, Shoko and Riho have a handful of matches together per Cagematch, and chemistry failed to find a spark in a lot of this match, which was fun enough but didn’t showcase any of the competitors at their best. The crowd was hot for Bea, and she’s been having some good matches in STARD✪M, but this was not peak-Priestley. I was excited to see Shoko, since tiny wrestlers with furry tails are my fave, but only Riho looked the part tonight. - Bea clocked Britt pretty good at one point, speculation is that’s part of why the good Doctor attempted to tag in Shoko. Kinda sums up the match. *Main-Card MJF, Sammy Guevara and Shawn Spears v Darby Allin, Jimmy Havoc and Joey Janela (***) - As far as multi-man schmozz curtain-jerkers go, this was a fun to-do. Darby Allin’s so fluid and speedy -- could do with more converted skateboarders in the squared circle. - I do think it’s odd to see MJF teaming with Shawn Spears, but I guess if it’s against Team Loveable Scuz, it’s for the greater good. The greater good. - Looks like Spears is indeed first up for a push, which sorta follows, other than Havoc, everyone else in this match is a sassy small child. Brandi Rhodes v Allie (dud) - I really feel for Allie, she’s not a world-beater or anything but she’s a good wrestler with a fun persona that you’ve got to imagine they’d like to get over, and now she’s been in the two worst matches of the last two shows. Brandi’s been trying to make being a wrestler work for a couple years, she’s got the drive and ambition but it’s not really coming along, I don’t know if it’s a lack of reps or what. This was a slow, sloppy, lifeless slog to the point that the best parts were the camera cutaways to Awesome Kong and Aja’s entrance. - Decently excited for Kong v Kong, less so for commentary tying themselves into knots during. A Boy and His Dinosaur v The Dark Order v Los Gueros Del Cielo (***1/2) - Another stupid ‘two in’ three-way match, this felt like it was headed for disaster until about halfway through and it devolved into a lucha-style tag match, and then it was a cooker. - Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus pulled off a string of the wildest tag team maneuvers of the night. Worth pointing out that The Young Bucks and Lucha Bros also worked this show. Both are improving show after show, the dinosaur still isn’t much for selling, but they’re getting over in a big way. - Jack Evans routinely leaves me amazed that he hasn’t had a higher-profile career, his small size and somewhat looser style accounts for some of it, but maybe he’s just made some odd choices along the way. Awesome he’s here now. - The Dark Order are assuredly the baddies, but the crowd seemed actively disinterested at times. Not sure what to make of that. Hangman Adam Pages v Kip Sabian (**1/2) - Sabian appeared to give Page a decent test on the road to Jericho, not quite a star-making turn but I liked what we saw of Sabian’s crowd-work. Seeds of doubt as to the outcome only really pointed toward ‘time limit draw.’ - Is it unreasonable to ask Commentary to be wise to the fact that the goth dad version of Jericho is literally always pulling shit like this, and to jump to conclusions at the point of that stiff as hell single-leg codebreaker? - Heel Jericho’s ironic reliance on cheap heat does not get old. He’s the greatest. Lucha Bros v SCU (***) - The SCU entrance is beautifully canned in the tradition of so many beautifully canned entrance schticks. Viva SCU. Pentagon and Fenix are Ant Samurai now, so watch out for that. - Solid as ever, given the participants, the main issue here is that this fracas was not super memorable, my main takeaway is that we’re headed toward a ladder war between the Bucks and Lucha Bros. (!!!) CIMA v Kenny Omega (****) - Kenny Omega lives. Granted, he’s barely worked since Wrestle Kingdom, but it’s nice to see him go all-out and look like one of the greatest in the world for the first time this year.  - CIMA’s an awesome opponent for Omega, they seem to operate on similar wavelengths, even their theatricality is similar. - So. Many. Knees. How on earth has CIMA been hitting meteora after meteora for decades? V-Trigger spam was in full, glorious effect. - Uhhh, that one spot, with the meteora onto the little timekeeper table. What in the fuck. The Young Bucks v Brotherhood (***1/2) - Finding a working pace between these two teams was going to be difficult, though Cody’s really been pulling his weight lately and this was no exception, and Dustin is as fluid and dogged as he’s ever been. The Rhodes boys really went for it here, and the clash of styles was definitely rewarding in parts, even as the pace jerked back and forth. - Without much of a story to tell, Cody is sapped of his unique talents as a wrestler. Looking forward to what he can put together when Spears comes knocking down his door again. - The Bucks don’t necessarily need to be telling much of a story but it would’ve helped this match to greatness. It is totally possible these teams could have had a classic. Maybe another time.

The Allure And Miranda Alize Collide With Chelsea Green And The Hex In Six-Woman Tag Match At Final Battle
The Allure (Angelina Love and Mandy Leon) have made it clear that they don’t like anyone in ROH. However, they’ve apparently found a like-minded individual in “The Lucha Baddie” Miranda Alize. Like The Allure, Alize is rude, arrogant and has a penchant for bending the rules. The Allure and Alize have joined forces to take on Chelsea Green and NWA Women’s Tag Team Champions The Hex (Allysin Kay…

Day 5 - Mexico City, Mexico
G Adventures part one of trip commences now.
1. This morning was a fairly early start as the plan was to go to the Anthropology Museum. On Sunday in CDMX, museums are free for locals so there was potentially a chance it could be super busy. At 8am we were in an Uber and on our way to the museum. Despite CDMX having pretty epic traffic the journey was all good. He did drop us with another 5 minute walk to go because in Sunday’s in Mexico City they shut one of the main drags. This is to allow runners / bikes to take over the city. It’s really cool to see them all doing down this straight road through the park in droves. Similar to Venice, Mexico City is actually sinking and you can see it all around. Throughout the historical district there are buildings at a different base because for years they’ve been putting piles underneath and so some areas are more raised than others in the historic district. This is because Mexico City was originally a lake area. Walking around the museum the signs are largely in Spanish rather than English (similar to everywhere, there are next no signs in English not people whom speak it) so I mainly looked at the artefacts - reading the signs I could. The colours in the clothes are amazing near the end of the walk as is the artwork and sculptures they created!
2. After the museum it was a walk to lunch. We wanted to head to the Roma and La Condesa area. Likening Mexico City to home I’d say it’s like the Ponsonby kind of area with heaps of amazing eats all around. The Anthropology museum was in Chapultepec Park so when we walked out of the museum it was the same experience as the other day of kids asking for help with homework. This time there were 5 kids with their mum and they interviewed Christophe and Kristin (both speak Spanish so mum explained homework and then kids asked questions in English). It was really cute. This time around the questions were slightly less intense with things like where are you from / what do you do / what do you like about Mexico City / what do you like about home etc. Was a cool experience and nice to know you’re helping them learn a second language. Aim is to get to Spanish school once I’m in Guatemala as would love to have more down than thank you / one ticket please / how are you and the other quick and easy ones I’m using a bit. We walked glacially through the park and via the long route to Roma area (seeing a few monuments on the way) before ultimately landing at a Mexican seafood restaurant (I know me...) but the avocado and beans/cheese tacos were delicious. Alongside the tacos 3 of us ordered Michelada which is tomato juice and beer a traditional Mexican drink. In someways maybe their version of a Bloody Mary (not that I typically drink them at home). Not entirely my jam but it has India beer and that was quite dark so perhaps I need to try with a lighter beer. A good experience none the less and the taco found continues!
3. We’d hit maybe 15000 steps for the day by the time we’d finished lunch and the plan was to head to the Historic District (Zócalo). We had two options - first - walk which google maps said it would take approximately an hour or Uber (maybe 40 minutes). The food had given us newfound energy and to be honest traffic in CDMX is comparable to Bangkok so we opted for the walk. It’s largely flat which is nice though there are cracks and pot holes in the pavement. By the time we were 3/4 of the way through we were the definition of team slow. It was about 30 degrees out and I looked at my phone which said 10 minutes walk to go. Well 10 minutes past and it still said we had 10 minutes. We must’ve been dragging our feet because I usually use google maps estimates as a challenge to beat but there was no way that was happening this day. At 3.30pm we finally made it! We headed to the area with the Aztecs to take a look at the blessing etc that they do. It’s not necessarily a tourist trap. While some tourists do participate there is also a huge number of locals lining up to be ridden of their bad juju. Then it was a final look inside the cathedral before headed back to where we were staying at 5pm.
4. Originally I hadn’t planned to go to the Lucha Libre; watching fighting isn’t my scene and I struggle with seeing people in physical pain (worse so when it’s intentional! Or even if on the TV- I am that person that hasn’t watched GoT at all). So I just couldn’t see my happiness levels being super high in that environment. Anyway after chatting around others that are interested or had been, in the end I did go. So glad I did. Hopefully not being too cynical but I suppose it was obvious from the outset that a lot of it was acted (eg pretending to stop someone when actually jumping so your other food takes load/makes sound). Because of that it made it easier for me to watch. Anyway the whole order going in was a bizarre experience in itself. We got to the match, they didn’t let us in (something about practicing), then they let us in still talking about practicing (but no one was when we went inside). Then this man talks over a speaker for quite a while (both English and Spanish) before were told to put our heads/hands in our lap (imagine like on aeroplane instructions) before ultimately an alarm went off and the whole stadium was kicked out. All the practice they were talking about was a fire alarm practice !! So now there’s a few 1,000 people standing on a random road after the evacuation. 10 minutes later the whole shebang of entering commences with 10 ticket scanners this time and many queues as they scan out tickets and let us inside. All in all like a 30 minute ordeal (and to be honest given all the walking we’d done already - I was looking forward to sitting ! So then it was the time for the LL. We saw 3 fights. First one on one and then 2x three on three matches. With the third match having a midget show up for a celebrity shot and then disappearing. Slightly random but got the crowd excited! It’s actually quite impressive what the guys do. While the idea of fighting isn’t my cup of tea, like I said you can tell it’s all a bit premeditated with them (‘secretly’) helping one another get into position. From a gymnastic point of view it’s really well done. So in my mind it’s like aggressive gymnastics and with that mindset it’s great. Kind of like some sort of dancing competition with the good guys and bad guys. The baddies make sneaky moves jumping out of the ring. The good guys might lose the first round or appear to be struggling along the way but then they ultimately take the win! Overall glad I went and would recommend.
5. The Lucha Libre went till circa 7.30pm and then it was time for our planned taco night. Originally a taco crawl we ended up at one spot eating lots of tacos before crawling our way to Churros. Honestly the place we went for tacos you wouldn’t turn your head at twice (looking like a random side stall) however if you’re in the know you go up there crickity metal stairs and there’s 3 levels of seating filled with locals! I ordered this dish (I forget what it’s called) but ultimately lots of veges and cheese and so many taco sheets to make to your hearts content. Anywhere you go it’s up to you to determine the spice level you’re after with at least 4 options on the cards. I’ve gotten v confident in my chilly / salsa consumption and always give them all a shot! But there’s a few that have a really yum flavour so typically I stick to them for the majority. After we were taco’d out we headed to a shop for churros. These were way better than the ones the other day. The first churros I had were quite crisp (so I assumed that was how they were in CDMX). But these were still golden but fluffy in the middle with slightly less sugar. I had both as is and with caramel and chocolate sauce (plain or caramel sauce was my favourite!). So yum but completely chocka by the end. Then back home for the night. I think from all the food and walking I had gone past being tired and was wide awake. A few others were feeling the same so we ended up heading to the bar (before being kicked out) and then to one of our rooms just yarning away about nothing. Finally tiredness kicked in around midnight so back to our room we went for a decent sleep for the early morning tomorrow!
Tally:
Steps walked: 38,608
Tacos eaten: 7
Litres of water: 4-5
Giraffe at the zoo (wandered through in Chapultepec Park) / classic tourist at the CDMX sign / lunch food and drinks / Cathedral / Lucha Libre
