howdy. so, ive learned about a group that does low cost assistive technology for cost of materials and shipping! they're called Makers Making Change! they do a variety of things so you should check and see if they have something that might benefit you (i believe you can also submit a request for a design that doesn't exist if you have an idea!). i did submit a request, but i cancelled it because i asked for help modeling the 3d print at first but actually ive ordered some calipers and im just gonna do it myself lol.
the item is a keyguard for my aac tablet. i use an Amazon fire 7, which is not a tablet that's commonly used for aac. most keyguards are sold for ipads. a keyguard is a plastic overlay that goes over the front of the screen and helps you target more accurately. which i think will be very helpful to increasing speed and ease of access for me.
i have gone back and forth about getting one but first of all, im not decreasing the amount of keyguards available for people who require them, and secondly me not having a severe motor control issue doesn't mean i can't benefit from this. it's just hard for me to accurately target the buttons on my device.
so once the calipers i ordered arrive, i'll be able to measure my case and input all the numbers and preferences into the program to make a custom shaped and sized keyguard just for me!
side note, if anyone goes to the makers making change website and has a look at the design called "Customizable, 3D Printable Keyguard for Grid-based, Free-form, and Hybrid AAC Apps on Tablets" and you think this is the item you need, if you want help modeling it, dm me! i ahev picked up quite a bit of info about how openscad (the program to model it in) works and the file itself. i wouldn't say im proficient or anything, but i believe having a file ready to print before you post on makers making change or even go to a custom 3d printing service on Etsy or something will be a lot faster than having the person making the print help you measure and fill out everything. especially if you have a nonstandard tablet and case like i do. anyway.
so that's my ramble for now. bye.

Borderlands 2 Krieg Belt Attachment
Still working on my Krieg cosplay and just finished the light up belt attachment.
It's created from a 3d print that I modeled and an analog circuit of some random green LEDs I had laying around.
The diffuser is made of 4 pieces of plexiglass I frosted with some spray frost. I was hoping to use less, but with the lack of distance and not wrapping the LEDs around all the edges I just had to make it work.
Added some foil to help bounce the light around and added a switch and a tiny JST connector in case I ever need to open the box to replace the coin cell battery. The back of the case has 2 holes for a M4 x 20mm bolt.

i just got my library card renewed after a very long time - do you know what all i can do with it other than taking out books? because i know there's more things but i feel like it's a silly question to ask
Not at all, and welcome back to the library life! Your millage may vary based on which of these services your library has available, but here's a few things I know of off the top of my head that are pretty common:
The library might have CDs, movies, and even newspapers you can borrow as well
Libby, an app that uses your library card to borrow and download ebooks and audiobooks to enjoy on your mobile device or e-reader
Kanopy, a streaming service for TV shows and movies
Hoopla, which has a whole bunch of stuff like shows & movies, comics, and magazines
Your library might have a makerspace that gives you access to things like 3D printers, button makers, computers with a bunch of Adobe software, ect
Sometimes they host book clubs or other fun community events!
my "#library guides" tag also has a number of posts about services like these if you'd like some more info. Your library's website should also list what services they offer, and/or you could ask a librarian there. Have fun!

so tired of 3d printing nerds acting like it's the "greatest rapid prototyping tool" as if anything will ever compare to the glory of foam board and hot glue. yeah your fancy new corexy printer or whatever is cool but stop acting like printing out waifu figurines off thingiverse is the embodiment of the maker spirit. if your house isn't full of electronics that look like middle school science fair projects you can't really call yourself a maker.

Electro priest's and dominus, printed and ready for basing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 3D models are (unsurprisingly) from The Makers Cult's "Dark Techno" line, which I've printed on my resin printer! The two dominus have been slightly IRL kitbashed to look different from one another.
The little lightning arcs are from MEZGIKE; a creator I've recently taken a liking to for their Dredge Marines line!
Looking forward to getting some paint on these guys :D

This is a reminder that you should look up if your library has a maker space.
If it does- use it! More use = more funding.
If it doesnt- send an email to whoever is in charge of adult programs for your library (or whatever contact info you can find) and *ask* about one.
I'm very lucky that my library has a pretty robust maker space. We have a 3d printer and laser cutter (both of which I basically hyper fixated on this summer)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But there's also sewing machines, embroidery machines, electronic cutters, and I think we're getting a sublimation printer soon? I asked about a button maker, so we'll see about that too.
A lot of times all a library needs to get funding for something is for you to *ask* for it. Once they can show there's interest, they can justify spending money on it.

You check your 3D printer readout, which tells you that you've got 4 hours left until it completes the full-auto-capable untraceable polymer firearm you downloaded from the internet. Your phone buzzes. The US Govt. Spy app alerts you that someone sent a meme in the groupchat you named a string of slang terms incomprehensible to anyone living on earth a year ago. One of the memes, a cropped video from the Chinese Govt. spy app, is flagged for misinformation. You tap "View anyway" and it appears to be bass boosted audio over a still image of a T-shirt depicting low-res hamsters doing a moneyspread. Your phone buzzes again, an alert popping up that your blobby-yet-angular electric car is almost done charging in the garage and will soon receive an over-the-air update that makes you wonder what else the car and its maker are talking about.
You try and convince yourself that we aren't yet living in the future.

Recently finished this custom 4-color IDEX 3D printer dubbed the “IPEX” for it’s paired extruders. It’s built around two E3D Chimera dual hotends and the BigTreeTech Octopus control board. It’s capable of 4-material prints, or 2-material mirrored prints with minimal wasted filament. Printed in Polymaker ASA. Feedback welcome!
