6. A film you wish you hadn’t watched?
im combing through my letterboxd trying to find a movie i watched that i immediately think "oh no", but i guess all movies even the bad ones have some sort of effect on me and that is impactful in itself. i have a bunch of movies that i forgot i even watched but idk if that really means i wish i hadnt watched them at all.
oh wait. la patota 2015. i was seventeen or so but i didnt know it was a movie about a gangrape and when it happened i was extremely shook and scared. later on in the movie theres also an offscreen torture that i still think about. its a rough movie (probably not as bad as some tarantino or sth, like, its not unheard of with its level of violence) but i dont remember anything about it apart from the horror it left me with, and a couple pretty shots especially at the end. i feel like i could probably bear to rewatch it with clearer eyes and maybe understand the weird stance the movie had about justice, but i dont think i will any time soon. just thinking about it makes me a little jittery.
9. The most aesthetically pleasing movie you’ve ever watched?
the red shoes 1948, house 1977, in the mood for love 2000, crimson peak 2015
12. A movie that holds a special place in your heart?
manuelita 1999 (nostalgia), the fall 2006 (sheer emotional impact) and a tie between swiss army man 2016 and can you ever forgive me 2018 (me seeing myself in someone elses struggles and getting a bunch of sudden unexpected catharsis).

This is from the 1999 Argentine film "Manuelita". This happens during the titular character's role as a fashion model, where her dress is torn off.

(Cartoon Brew) -- Makoto Shinkai’s feature Weathering with You has been selected as the official Japanese entry for the International Feature Film Award (previously Foreign Language Film) at the Oscars. The announcement was made today by the Japan Motion Picture Producers Association, which selected Shinkai’s film from a shortlist of 13 films.
Shinkai’s 2016 film, the critically-acclaimed Your Name, broke global box office records for a Japanese film ($360 million worldwide), but the film’s U.S. distributor didn’t have any experience with awards season politics and couldn’t get Academy voters excited about the project, resulting in no nomination for a film that many believed was a shoo-in in the feature animation category. A similar situation is unlikely to happen with Weathering with You, which is being distributed in the U.S. by GKIDS, which has scored 11 nominations in the animated feature category, including an Oscar nomination earlier this year for Mirai, the first non-Ghibli film to be nominated in the category.
With Japan now pushing the film in the International category, the film’s visibility will continue to increase in the lead-up to Oscar voting. It doesn’t hurt that Weathering with You is currently the highest-grossing film, animated or live action, at the Japanese box office this year.
Each country is allowed to submit only one film for the international category. The decision by Japan to enter Weathering with You in the international field has no effect on the film’s ability to also compete in the Academy’s animated feature category, should the film’s producers also choose to qualify it for the animation competition.
At least fifteen countries/territories have submitted animated features for foreign-language Oscar consideration in the past, but only one animated film has ever been nominated in the category: Israel’s Waltz with Bashir. Below is Cartoon Brew’s list of countries that have submitted an animation project as their foreign language choice:
1953: France, Johnny the Giant Killer 1975: Belgium, Tarzoon Shame of the Jungle 1982: Romania, Quo Vadis Homo Sapiens? 1986: Hungary, Cat City 1994: Japan, Pom Poko 1997: Croatia, Lapitch the Little Shoemaker 1997: Japan, Princess Mononoke 1999: Argentina, Manuelita 2002: Chile, Ogu and Mampato on Easter Island 2005: Luxembourg, Renart the Fox 2007: France, Persepolis 2008: Israel, Waltz with Bashir (nominated) 2011: Singapore, Tatsumi 2013: Uruguay, Anina 2014: Latvia, Rocks in My Pockets 2015: Palestinian territories, The Wanted 18 2016: Switzerland, My Life as a Zucchini

15. A film everyone loves but you hate?
oof, idk... i dont think i hate a lot of movies? like it happens more often that i adore a movie people dont just care much about. but i was absolutely pissed off about damien chazelles babylon, but i dont think many ppl loved that one. maybe forrest gump? i dont hate groundhog day, but i dont really like it very much. theres also how to steal a million and funny face and most audrey hepburn movies, i just dont like them and i dont know why. but i dont really hate them? and like, i didnt like glass onion or booksmart and i know these are movies with a fair amount of fans, but idk. the movies i hate are bc they personally annoy me, and theres a bunch of movies that annoy me in very general ways that dont merit much hatred :^/

hey everyone!!
as part of an effort to make argentinean animation more accessible and for it to reach a wider audience, i’ve finally finished subtitling Manuelita (1999) to english. i’m hoping to soon also make captions in the original language and, eventually, also subtitle more García Ferré movies and upload other animated movies in general.
here’s the drive folder with the movie in mp4 format and with the subtitles in .srt format.
similarly, if someone wants to translate the subtitles into another language (italian, portuguese, french, russian, any language, really) please send me a message and i’ll put it in the folder as well!
