Thappad Movie Review : An impactful social drama that questions the unsaid rules of marriage
Critic's Rating: 4.5/5 Thappad Story: Amrita's (Taapsee Pannu) world comes crumbling down when her fiercely ambitious husband, Vikram (Pavail Gulati), lands a mighty slap across her face at a party that was supposed to celebrate his success in the corporate world. Will Amrita, whose life so far has revolved around Vikram's needs, wants and dreams, stand up and speak up against this humiliation in public? Or will she brush it off as a one-off incident, forgive him and move on? Or will this shake up her own beliefs about life and marriage?
Thappad Review: Hailing from a loving and supportive family in Delhi, and trained in Indian classical dance, Amrita's life could have taken a different course but she harboured the dream of being the best housewife ever, even if that meant giving up on her passion for dance. Vikram is a go-getter, and has his mind and heart set on his goals and he will do everything in his capacity to achieve it. But, in a moment, he realises that his big dreams are about to get shattered, blame it on office politics. Vikram does the unthinkable — his pent-up frustration finds an outlet in his committed wife, in the form of a thunderous slap that's witnessed by loved ones from both sides. And, this sparks the beginning of an ugly, emotional battle which goes beyond domestic violence. While the uncalled for incident makes Amrita delve upon and question her life choices and their marriage, Vikram continues to live in denial and wonders how 'just one slap' is turning out to be a life-changing moment.
Anubhav Sinha's 2 hours and 21 minutes-long social drama, which is made for a society that rarely talks about the emotional and psychological effects of domestic violence, is set to spark debates and discussions on various ground. One stress-fuelled slap at a party takes the form of a full-blown conversation pertaining to the unsaid rules of marriage (where women are constantly reminded ki ghar zyada zaruri hain and that their actions will always be determined by log kya kehenge) and if it is acceptable for a husband to get away with what he considers one 'casual thappad' because he was fuming with watch movies online.
Tumblr media
The film takes its own sweet time in expressing the dynamics of Amrita-Vikram's arranged marriage and how the two of them manage to blend in well with each other's financially-imbalanced, yet likeable, families. Sure, Vikram loves his wife, but he has made a monster out of his career goals, which the better half supports and harbours with all her heart. Even before the conflict arises, you can see an uber happy Taapsee making plans of a 'big blue door' at their future London apartment. Naturally, when the slap happens, her world turns over and even both sides of the family are divided on what is right, what is wrong and how much is too much, and the protocols of marriage in our Indian setting. Irrespective of various views thrown at her, Amrita is fiesty and resolves to channel the inner fighter in her and stands up for what she truly believes in — that even one slap is outrageous and not okay.
'Thappad' is not just a film aimlessly ranting about borderline domestic violence; it brings to light the years of conditioning that a woman is subjected to by her own family and the society that she lives in. Other than the aforementioned couple, there are other women in focus, too — one who is bearing the brunt of a family's name and legacy, one hung up on the idea that marriage is the ultimate destination, one coming from the poorer section of the society who is compelled to believe that getting thrashed by the husband is the norm, and one who has loved and lost a fine husband and is now struggling to find a replacement who outdoes the former. Sinha manages to intertwine all these stories and juxtaposition them with one another at right junctions, without being too in-your-face about it. The subtly works beautifully, as the stark contrast in their lives unfold.
Taapsee, as the submissive wife, who suddenly undergoes an ocean of change within her, is a firecracker of a performer in this drama. In one scene, where she bids goodbye to a crucial character, Taapsee delivers a speech that is cathartic to its very core. Her portrayal is restrained but at the same time, in every scene she exposes a gamut of emotions — pain, disgust, regret and rage — without saying too much. If that is not a stupendous performance, we don't know what is. Pavail Gulati, as the determined corporate-slave with very intense life goals, pulls off a brilliant performance. You will want to hate him for his flaws, but his character is no less complex than the rest of them. Kumud Mishra stands out as Amrita's father — an ardent supporter of his daughter — and at most times, he is the only one who sticks up for her. Mishra's character reinstates why for a lot of daughters their father is their hero. Tanvi Azmi and Ratna Pathak Shah, as Amrita's mother-in-law and mother respectively, play their roles to a T — that of being the torchbearers of matriarchal mentality and trying to instill the same in the women of the house. However, Maya Sarao, who plays the high-profile lawyer Nethra Jaisingh, is the weakest link in the film. Not that she is bad, but others are so good that she gets overshadowed by some real power-packed performances.
The music of the film (by Anurag Saikia) is beautifully melancholic in tone and blends in with the narrative. It is safe to say that Anubhav Sinha has rendered his career best in this strong-worded social drama. He deserves an applause for the depth-handling of the various characters in the film, their greys, complexities, dilemmas without ever getting too loud, overbearing or trying too hard to make a statement. Yet, the film drives home a solid point and leaves you with enough to ponder upon. The fine and nuanced writing, by Sinha and Mrunmayee Lagoo, deserves a special mention as that is what takes the film notches higher. To sum it up, 'Thappad' is a silent slap on our society's age-old belief — shaadi mein sab kuch chalta hain. But, honestly, should it be that way? And that is what we need to start talking about... now! In-depth Analysis Our overall critic’s rating is not an average of the sub scores below.

Jennifer Winget, Ashish Chowdhry, and Shivin Narang have made quite an impact with their performances as May Jaisingh, Mrityunjay Roy, and Rudra Roy respectively. The trio’s performance is being lauded by the audience and they just can’t seem to get enough of their intense and fiery characters. Be it Maya’s need to seek vengeance against MJ or her cute moments with Rudra, Jennifer Winget has done justice to this role since day one. As for Ashish Chowdhry, the fans and viewers had never seen him play an antagonist and this was surely like a breath of fresh air, not to mention that the salt and pepper look obviously suits him! The show has shown a significant amount of growth in Shivin’s character as well.
While the show has been topping the weekly online TRP charts but failed to do the same on the television. Amidst the low TRP rates, there were rumours that the channel might pull the plug on the show and because it is famous on the internet, it will continue digitally. However, the channel has released an official statement and the fans can finally heave a sigh of relief. The statement reads, “The rumours around Beyhadh 2 going off-air and moving to the OTT platform SonyLIV are uncorroborated and hold no truth. Beyhadh 2, like any other fiction offering by Sony Entertainment Television, is a finite story and will meet its logical culmination as planned on the channel.”
Even though it is not going off-air immediately, the show was supposed to be a finite series and that had already been clarified by the makers since the beginning of the show. Looks like the fans will get to enjoy watching Maya create her magic on television for a little longer than they had expected. We’re still not sure if this decision was made due to the multiple Twitter trends made by fans, but we’re glad that the show is not going off-air.

The sun went down and eventually everything was black. The town was sound asleep, Maya sat on the banks of the listless river trying to make sense of her life. If her love for Rishi was true, why did she have to suffer the heartbreak? She wasn't tied by down by her past, but some questions seemed to return back to her. Wan moon peaked from the sky, hiding behind the clouds to avoid giving any answers. Maya could sit there in the stillness of the night, forever gazing at the stars. Something shifted behind, and she turned. There was no one. Only cool wind that was teasing branches of the trees. Maya returned to her endless thoughts and the tranquil river, there was a sound again. It was two in the night, who could it possibly be? She turned again and saw a handsome man in white shirt and blue jeans, his smile most radiant. She had never seen him before in her random midnight escapades to this river bank near her house,. "Hi" He said when he found her looking at him. Maya said nothing. It was odd someone was ambling by a river at this hour. But by that logic, she was odd too. The man sat on the nearby stairs of the bank, when Maya broke the ice. "I come to this place often, I have never seen you here before." Maya said. "But I have seen you visiting the banks" Maya looked at him, " Lol, I am not a stalker. I happened to be here when you were visiting the banks." "Interesting. I hope you don't think I have come back to jump into the water." "Noo.. definitely not. Rivers can only give water, life and fishes." "What about floods, famines and cyclones." "What about peace, tranquility and introspection." Maya smiled at the argument. There was something in his demeanor, and the manner of his speech that made Maya want to speak to him more. "Maya Jaisingh." She extended her hand. "Rudra Roy." "I knew you were a Bengali when you mentioned fishes." "That's called stereotyping. Btw, what an odd place and odd hour to befriend a pretty lady like you." he said. "That's called breaking a stereotype." Rudra laughed at her words. The conversation kept taking one turn from the other, Maya forgot all the dilemmas that she came to think about on the river bank. She learnt he was a traveler and explorer, and shared that she was an aspiring author looking for a break. "I think moonlight romance is made overrated by poets. Real romance happens right under the sun. Fearless and radiant. Moonlight is only for cowards to hide." Rudra said. "I disagree Rudra, sometimes people use the sunlight to mask their true intentions in its brilliance. Besides no place can be as tranquil as moonlight." Maya thought back to the time when she was dating Rishi, 7 years younger to her. They never hesitated to express their love in sun or moon. Then one day he said he had fallen out of love and left her for another girl. "I am sorry if I said anything wrong." Rudra said seeing her suddenly fallen silent. "No it's alright. Looks like the sun is finally up." The sky had taken the hue of orange and red. Rudra saw her eyes twinkle with the first rays of sun like pure water in the river. Maya got up from the river bank to head for home, when she turned towards him. "Hey, can I have your number?" she said. Rudra was stumped, she looked like a dream come true. "Umm..I don't keep a phone." "What? Are you kidding me?" "No, I am serious. My work ethics involve not keeping a phone." he said nervously. "What about your friends and family?" "They have got used to it with time." Maya rolled her eyes, "Okay, okay.. I have a plan. Tomorrow same place, same time.. Until you decide to be fearless and explore the sunlight." Maya blushed like a teen, her heart skipped a beat. Rudra watched her leave with a grin. He had been waiting for this day all his life. He couldn't help but think about those times when he watched her cry in solitude. Their worlds may be different, but love exists in all forms. After Maya left and entered into her lane, the handsome man turned into a snake and curled into the bushes. Tournesol
