Black Cake intermingles the story of Eleanor Bennett’s life growing up in the 1960s in a Caribbean island town with that of her children who grew up in the 2000s in Southern California. Ellie’s life is one of enormous life and struggling as well as one of strength and determination. The story begins with Byron and Benny sitting down after their mother’s passing and listening to her final recording for them. The recording is the means by which the children learn that everything they thought they knew about their mother, including her and their father’s true name!, is in fact a lie. Black Cake follows as Ellie is married off by the father to little man and escapes to her time in a group home to ultimately how she came to be reunited with her childhood best friend and made preparations for her end of life. It’s a story of the rich culture as well as the hardships of life in the islands and how some of those hardships may have a different face and name but are universal as Benny and Byron continue to fight for their place as adults in New York and California out on their own.

Wow, this book was absolutely heartbreaking. This is definitely not a lighthearted summer read but a book that makes you think and question things. In some ways we as a society have made progress towards mother’s rights, towards racism, etc but we absolutely have not come far enough. The author’s note at the end tied things together very nicely and really impressed me with the recommended reading.

I recommend for those who like a profound historical fiction read.

Ieri sera ho iniziato a leggere l'ultima opera teatrale di #moliere appartenente al ciclo della medicina. Per ora, ho letto solo le prime scene. Argante è un ipocondriaco che vuole imparentarsi con il suo medico, motivo per cui vuole dare sua figlia in sposa al nipote del suo dottore. La figlia, però, ha altri piani, è innamorata di un altro. È una commedia francese, un'opera ironica che non vuole tanto deridere la medicina e i dottori ma la loro incapacità di basarsi su fatti scientifici. Nel testo, infatti, si parla di cure contro gli umori cattivi, cure che costano molto ad Argante e che gli vengono somministrate inutilmente anche se lui stesso crede di averne bisogno.
