In the most positive way ever I think I have been permanently changed by that art. #I will eventually do the reverse crossover but for now - take some extra bugs! #It is so wild looking back at the past parts - I really do love drawing in this style but I'm far more comfortable with it now! #I am just vibrating with so much art energy. I am loose and in your vicinity. You can't catch me. I have bugs to show people. #This is a bit of a time capsule considering that these are references to where pd-mdzs the comic is at in the story. #More notes: Wen Zhuliu is an ant and Wang Lingjiao is a firefly. #Yes I have yet to explain the juicebox. We are a handful of comics away from that pay off.

Bugs

This is inspired by the fact that I have finally played Hollow Knight! I’m only around 14 hrs in, but I know lots of the lore etc around the game I guess. Also def subconsciously (and not subconsciously in a couple places) inspired by @theballadofmars and @poorly-drawn-mdzs who both have made fantastic HK x MDZS(MXTX) AUs.

I think maybe some hollow knight spoilers? Slight close ups and rambling below

Hua Cheng- he’s a butterfly, but I felt that Grim’s aesthetic (if not much else) seemed kinda fitting for him. I like to imagine him as a fake out boss fight before he officially introduces himself

Xie Lian- I really wasn’t sure what to do with him. So I just made him a vessel, though his horns are meant to be reminiscent of the Pale King (no lore reasons)

Lan Wangji- I wanted him to be like, just a bug. But also a wanderer and protector WWX could run into. My second idea for him actually is kinda ooc for him I think (unless the grey mourner has more going on than I realize).

Wei Wuxian- vessel. It just seemed appropriate since the vessel dies and comes back. Im thinking maybe he once had a bigger form (akin to the hollow knight) long ago that cracked, he becomes a shade and eventually reforms or something idk. I was thinking bugs first, rational later. I think that he’d be either be more like Samus and shoot things from a slight distance or just beat people with his flute.

Luo Binghe- beast, or half beast in this case. I couldn’t get the idea of 4-8 big watery eyes out of my head

Shen Qingqiu- idk, the mantis tribe fights deepnest. It also seemed to fit OG Shen Qingqiu well, being a mantis.

I think if I keep playing HK I will revisit and revise this idea, I’m not really satisfied with XL and LWJ current iterations.

Me, wandering through my old google docs, "Oh, I totally forgot about that time I wrote notes on a Hollow Knight/MDZS AU".

HK/MDZS AU

This is far in the future, after the events of the game, and Hallownest has been repopulated. However it still has a lot of dark emotions, ghosts, dreams, etc. and so the Clans have risen to prominence as the ones who can deal with that.

Jiang Clan

Water beetles (possibly water lily beetles?)

They live in the Blue Lake which is now a thriving town. They cover the City of Tears (still almost entirely uninhabited), the Forgotten Crossroads, and the Royal Waterways (surprisingly inhabited by damp loving bugs).

WWX is a cheerful red and black cricket.

Lan Clan

Mantises

They live in Fog Valley around Monomon’s Library, and cover the Queen’s Gardens, the Greenpath and the Fungal Wastes. This is a large area, but the Fungal Wastes and Greenpath are often more a matter of careful diplomacy with the natives to be allowed to help them than having any kind of authority.

They’re not vegetarians (this not being possible for mantises) but they do have unusually strict rules about exactly what they can eat. This also helps in some ways, since some of the people they serve are vegetation in both the Fungal Wastes and the Greenpath.

Jin Clan

Beetles (metallic/golden beetles?)

They cover Kingdom’s Edge which is a smaller territory than most but has become both a densely populated one and a wealthy one. The source of most of their wealth is the new bees that have moved into the Hive.

Nie Clan

Spiders

They live in the Hidden Village and cover Deepnest. It’s a troublesome territory, once again full of spiders and centipedes and other cannibalistic types, and the Nies themselves don’t have a great reputation. But they maintain relations with the other clans and take care of their own area.

NHS plays up being small and helpless to counteract the stereotypes, but he’s a very adept web spinner.

(It occurs to me that if people are looking for NMJ’s body parts in this at some point they’re going to find a few more limbs than they expected. And well. That narrows it down.)

Wen Clan

Butterflies? Maybe wasps? Something diurnal and flighted, that needs access to sun and open air.

They live at the top of Crystal Peak and cover Crystal Peak, the Resting Grounds and Dirtmouth (now much larger). Despite the stories told about the Radiance they love the sun and do still use it as their symbol, setting them apart from the majority of bugs.

It’s pretty rough for the Wen remnants to wind up living in the Ancient Basin.

Lan Sizhui is also going to stand out a whole lot more among the Lans, but there’s really no avoiding that in this AU.

Initially I wanted Baoshan Sanren to live in the Howling Wastes, but I think that for plot reasons she’s going to have to be somewhere in the Ancient Basin. Either that or no one knows where she is to such an extent that WWX was able to claim she was in the Ancient Basin, because I do want him to be thrown into the Abyss and learn heretical Blood Magic.

Which is still on the table btw. I've put thought into it. #Speaking of putting thought into things...I have put two full asses of effort into this. So I'm gonna talk about it in the tags. #I mapped all the major sects to hallownest clans and drew *way* more than just the characters shown here #More pertinently not shown are the Nies - Who are beetles! #The mantis clan has a lot of crossover with the Nies given the lore but I Love Mantis Wangji and you cant take him away from me. #wwx was a moth solely for his ties to Baoshen sanren (nearly forgotten sect & nearly forgotten clan) #but (HOLLOW KNIGHT SPOILERS) the ties to her radiance and the infection made for some very fun parallels #YLLZ moth 100% is puppeting husks around #JGS is a pale king expy becuase...you know....lots of children... #it also gives me a great excuse to explain wwx's soul taking mxy's body. #Still have lots and lots to say but I'm already running late! More funny - less specific to a very small population - comics to morrow! #This was more or less a style study and I learned a lot! #Thank you all for an awesome 6 months B*) You guys have pushed my way more out of my shell (pun intented) than I would- #-have ever gone had I just hidden away like I usually do. Of course I had to introduce him as such #Im pretty sure its not JZX who kicks him the first time but birthday boy on birthday boy violence is too funny to pass up #Madam yu being mosskin-like but distinctly not from the same clan was pretty important to me when designing her. But I was at such a loss! #By *chance* I saw The Hunter's design and thought 'YEAH THATS THE ONE'. Let milfs be terrifying. #Little apple originally was gonna be 'the girl who's backyard this all takes place in' but ....little bug steed.... #In case you are wondering whether the Lan juniors are suspicious of the fact LSZ has twice as many legs: No. He's 'just like that' to them. #Part three will be in less than a week! Time to see the other side of the crossover! #I am so happy that I can draw silly crossovers and have people cheering me on! Yippee!
