Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia - The Record Plant, Sausalito, California, July 8, 1973
I've been catching up with the latest season of the Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast, which hones in on the annus mirabilis of 1973. In 1973, Jerry Garcia was, arguably, reaching his peak, not only musically, but personally as well. Ensconced comfortably in Stinson Beach, he was eagerly exploring new avenues, getting jazzier and funkier with Merl Saunders and getting deeply rootsy with Old & In The Way. Oh yeah, he was also playing numerous outrageously amazing shows with the Grateful Dead (in bigger and bigger venues). Life was good for Garcia — at least that's the overwhelming impression you get from the remembrances collected in this great Deadcast episode.
Not that I ever need any excuse, but listening to the ep sent me back to those Saunders / Garcia / Kahn/ Vitt tapes, including this deliciously stoney summer evening in Sausalito, broadcast on KSAN-FM a half-century ago. The quartet sounds supremely laid-back but still exploratory, finding the confluence between rich R&B and "My Funny Valentine," digging into the Meters-esque groove of "Finders Keepers" and easing their way through a sweet/sad "Positively 4th Street." So very nice!
Of course, we should also check out some Old & In The Way from this period, too (Peter Rowan's Deadcast contributions are especially illuminating) ... so here's the group also at the Record Plant in March of '73, also broadcast on KSAN-FM. Down where the river bends!

Song Review: Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders feat. Paul Butterfield - “Save Mother Earth” (Live, Jan. 19, 1972)
Part composition and part improvisation, “Save Mother Earth” was an oft-visited vehicle for Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders’ informal, early-1970s gigs in California.
So when Paul Butterfield came by on Jan. 19, 1972, to play with guitarist Garcia, organist Saunders, bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt, “Save Mother Earth” was featured and Butterfield blew harp like a man intimately familiar with the tune.
Out to preview side one of the forthcoming Heads & Tails: Vol. 1, this previously unreleased recording sports high-quality sound and music that’s both loose and tight. No noodles on this one. And when Garcia and Butterfield lock into some call-and-response action in the 13th minute, the lucky few in attendance must’ve been agog.
Out Nov. 3, Vol. 1 is backed with the Feb. 5, 1988, recordings of the Jerry Garcia Band’s versions of “Don’t Let Go” and “Think.” The LP is the first is a series of archival recordings from the back pages of Garcia’s repertoire.
“Save Mother Earth” is an auspicious first hit.

I suppose I will nominate either Alan Singer or Earl Guthrie, (or both) to share their life-changing musical selections with us. They are both very busy, and may not wish to partake in this madness. If so, I completely understand. This is precisely why I plan on getting the rest of them out of the way, tonight. HA HA HA!

Did Merl Saunders Shape the Grateful Dead’s Sound with Jazz?
As one of the greatest rock ’n’ roll bands of all time, Grateful Dead, who gained popularity in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s, quickly became synonymous with the hippie movement and demonstrated how the counterculture of the civil rights era drew inspiration from Black art, and challenged the segregationist norms of the era. Both musically and idealistically, Jerry Garcia was ahead of…

Album Review: Jerry Garcia - Heads & Tails Vol. 1
Heads, listeners win. & Tails, listeners also win.
Vol. 1 of Jerry Garcia’s new Heads & Tails album series puts the Grateful Dead man’s only known collaboration with Paul Butterfield on Side 1 and a couple of Jerry Garcia Band smokers on the flip.
The three-track LP pairs the Jan. 19, 1972, version of “Save Mother Earth,” by Garcia, Merl Saunders and Butterfield with JGB’s Feb. 5, 1988, performances of “Don’t Let Go” and “Think.” Listeners familiar with Garcia only through the Grateful Dead can expect an ear-popping listen.
Clocking in at 17 minutes, “Save Mother Earth” is a funky, loose-but-tight instrumental with oodles of improv but zero noodling. Butterfield blows his harp like a man intimately familiar with the song he’d never played. And when he and Garcia lock into some call-and-response action in the 13th minute, the lucky few in attendance must’ve been agog.
This 51-year-old recording is higher fidelity than the 35-year-old specimen on the back side. But the JGB material is welcome as Garcia plays the mad musical scientist on “Don’t Let Go,” virtually screaming along to the melody he plays on his axe and coaxing the band into wild improvisational territory, while “Think” proves Garcia a bonafide bluesman.
