Barry Lyndon / Marisa Berenson as Lady Honoria Lyndon
Year: 1975
Designers: Milena Canonero and Ulla-Britt Söderlund
It's interesting how there are certain periods that pop up over and over again in the Academy Award-winning costume designs. The 1920s are one of them, and the 18th century (as a whole) is another.
I had never seen this film before watching parts of it to make screencaps. I see why people say that every frame looks like a painting! She could have stepped right out of a Gainsborough canvas. The movie covers the period from the 1750s to the late 1780s.
Lady Lyndon wears this brown day dress in a brief scene where she comes to say goodbye to her husband before going out for the day with her children. The deep frill of lace around the collar is very attractive. But it's the hat that really draws focus, with the satin bow and ostrich feathers.

One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar Winners
Chariots of Fire / Alice Krige as Sybil Gordon
Year: 1981
Designer: Milena Canonero
This cream-colored dress looks just perfect for a warm summer day. It has the by-now-familiar semi-sheer top over an opaque foundation (compare these costumes from Enchanted April, which is set around the same time). There's a bit of subtle eyelet work around the seams and hems. It's not quite clear whether the floral designs are embroidered or stenciled on, but they appear to cover the whole dress, based on what we can see of the skirt. The gloves, by contrast, extend down the wrist and have a polka-dot design on the frills.
The cloth band and floral decoration on her broad-brimmed straw hat pick up the colors of the dress, and her parasol appears to be a very pale pink.

Gucci recreates Stanley Kubrick’s Films
Normally I scoff at fashion companies jumping on a bandwagon for their ad campaigns or brand (i.e. the Grunge-wear line of 1992), but Gucci’s Fall 2022 campaign has recreated several iconic scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s film with Gucci clothes inserted. Kubrick’s costume designer Milena Canonero even collaborated on this campaign. I have to say the production design is highly impressive and incredibly accurate.

barry lyndon is the best film ever made in my opinion and the scene where barry talks to his future wife’s current husband and the guy gets so angry he dies is the funniest scene in history. the scene where he steals a gay officer’s coat and proceeds to desert the british army (and get caught) is a close second.
