Gonna be honest I’m always confused by posts that say something to the effect of “you have to be friends with *insert demographic* because if you don’t, when conservatives want you to hate/be scared of *demographic*, you will believe them”

Like, yeah! By all means befriend *demographic*! But do it because you want to befriend the person, not out of some sort of moral obligation or just because they’re part of *demographic* cause that’s literally tokenizing.

Plus, you can’t possibly befriend all the different groups that conservatives want you to be scared of. Like, the solution to falling prey to conservative rhetoric shouldn’t be “you have to know *demographic* on a personal level” but instead “you have to be able to empathize with someone even if you do not personally know them, and/or exercise critical thinking especially when met with general assertions about an entire group of people”.

I feel like it’s ridiculous to assume that just because someone isn’t personally friends with *demographic*, they will automatically hate them when given the option, and there’s no way to change that
