MF Day #74: Mysto

The idea of a ninja mixel tribe is a definitely a cool one, but I can’t help but wonder where it came from. Was it something that the crew genuinely wanted to do? Or a request from the LEGO execs who were looking to appeal to fans of one of their most popular franchises based off the ninja theme? The ladder case probably wouldn’t be the biggest surprise, but regardless I still think it made for a pretty fun addition to the Mixels lineup. The Nindjas were lucky enough to be some the few Mixels of the last couple of waves to have a decent amount of screentime(maybe not much but there was still more to be shown than the rest). And while they don’t have the strongest personalities in the show, as they just felt like bland heroic characters, they do however have some sick looking designs. Mysto pulls off the sensei look perfectly, and his design has a bunch of creative uses for LEGO pieces, especially with his hat and hair.

MF Day #73: Sweepz

And now we’ve come to the nineth and final wave of the Mixels, and it’s a another pretty good set of tribes that wraps up the series nicely. While the characters featured were one again not given enough time to present themselves in the show, at least a good chunk of them got to be a part of the plot, even if they are side plots. For a concept as weak as garbage mixels, it’s surprising how they came up with some really cool and inventive deisgns out of it. They all look equally good, but if I had to pick a favorite I’d probably go with Sweepz. He’s got a cute beaver like appearance, and he greatly utilizes the broom piece for a tail, and those brush pieces for hands.

MF Day #32: Burnard

I’m sorry, but this was WAY too good of an opportunity to pass up on! I was going through my date release plan list for the project, and I just happen to notice that the Burnard drawing was set for March 14th, or to quote Planton from “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie”: The Day that Krabs Fries! And with the fact that Burnard is a fire type mixel, it all just lined up so perfectly for me to come up with this art idea!

Burnard himself feels like a very fitting mixel for this scenario, since he has a habit of constantly laughing or chuckling at the most random times. And depending on how hard he laughs, his hot breath will blast out flames from his mouth. So, if you don’t want to end up like Mr. Krabs here, stay back!

MF Day #21: Magnifo

Capping off this amazing wave are the Wiztastics, appearing with a magical purple/black color combo! Magnifo may have the weakest design out of all of wave 3, but it’s still a really good design. It says a lot about the quality of something when even the weakest part of it is still pretty solid.

Not only that, I feel like his somewhat average looking appearance complaints his pathetic and amateurish personality. And the wizard-like features do help him stand out from the crowd.

MF Day #24: Mesmo

Here we have another top tier mixel for me. Everything about Mesmo works, he’s got an absolutely amazing dragon-like design, with of course the real shining force are those wizard hats for eyebrows. And much like with Volectro, it perfectly exemplifies his personality; mainly acting all sour and moody, but still having a bit of a soft side. Perhaps he takes great joy in presenting his crafty magic skills for mixels who are genuinely invested, but wishes to not admit himself so that he can maintain his serious image.

MF: Day #31: Nurp-Naut

Nurp-Naut is an interesting concept of a mixel, an orbiton with a two-split personality. Where one minute they’re a baby, and then with the spin of a helmet they become an elder. This isn’t just a personality change, this is straight up sporadic ageing!

Now Nurp-Naut is a fun character and all, but I can’t help but wonder how the developers came up with this idea. I like to think that the little orbiton’s helmet has a slight glitch where it can flip its lid and change their personality. And since the obitons inhabit outer space, it could also affect their age, we can’t really tell if Nurp-Naut was always either younger or older than he is.

MF Day #57: Jamzy

Just when you think the LEGO team were running out of ideas for fun and unique Mixel tribes, they struck gold again…A band of living instrument mixels! If that’s not one of the coolest concepts Mixels has ever come up with then I don’t know what is! The Mixies being a group of musical mixels had a ton of great potential and possibilities, and I’m disappointed that the show didn’t do much with it.

It’s an idea so good that you could create even more Mixies mixels based off of other instruments. Heck that’s exactly what the designers did at one point, created a whole bunch of cool looking background Mixies characters that were never used in the show; thus, proving my point of how imaginative this concept is!

But anyways, let us bring our attention to the main Mixies group, starting with Jamzy. Being a living guitar, I’d imagine him as an upbeat and energetic band leader. I’ve had personal experience with being part of a school band, and it always felt so vibrant and alive thanks to our band leader’s passion for music. So having someone who has a similar passion for music to voice Jamzy would be very fitting. And Cree Summer was a pretty welcomed choice, as many of her music would involve using some type of Guitar for the melody.

If this character was used more throughout the show I probably would've liked him more, but as is Jamzy is still a pretty solid mixel.

MF Day #28: Rokit

Starting off the second year of Mixels with wave 4, which features one of the first tribes that explore outside of the theme of elements, even outside of their own planet!

And out of all the Orbitons, Rokit is probably my personal favorite of the tribe. I really like his soldier-like appearance which is a good fit for this theme. And he contains some of the funniest moments in the special he’s featured in: “Mixel Moon Madness”.

MF Day #15: Tentro

A very underrated mixel in my opinion, Tentro has always sticked with me as being one of my absolute favorite mixels. With his great utilization of his orange and black color scheme. His squid-like appearance that perfectly fits in with the flexibility theme. And that he’s apparently a very polite but socially awkward personality, which feels like a nice trait for this character to have.

MF Day #63: Tapsy

Tapsy is a very close second to being my favorite Mixies Mixel. He’s got such an awesome design, one of those that are simple but effective. And is probably one of the best examples of taking something ordinary and turning it into an animate creature. In this case we have a living drum set! I love the way they utilized the flat hat pieces for drums/cymbals, his two sets of purple arms and legs really help make his color scheme pop. And his base drum with the logo on it is the cherry on top!

It is nothing short of a travesty that we didn’t get to see Tapsy in the show outside of the intro. I can only just imagine how fun it would’ve been to see this guy in action, even if it was just once. I mean for a little as we got from Mixels like trumpsy or the MCPD, at least we got to see them present in the special instead of just being nonexistent.

MF Day #33: Vampos

Many fans point out Globert to be the best Glowkie(and understandably so), but I personally find Vampos to be my favorite of the tribe. I just really like his design with the exaggerated size of his fangs that cover up most of his mouth, and his expression and lanky appearance makes him come off a someone who always feels calm and relaxed with everything.

MF Day #49: Wuzzo

A mixel with a chainsaw for a nose? That has to be one the coolest design concepts this series has thought up, and they managed to make it work with Wuzzo. Not only looking great and fit in well with the construction theme, but also adding to his awkwardness and klutziness. I’d imagine that the weight of his chainsaw nose and his long fumbling feet would send Wuzzo to some clumsy antics, and possibly break a few things if he’s not careful.

MF Day #42: Turg

I really like how the Lixer tribe act animalistic compared to the majority of the Mixels lineup, so of course their designs would resemble several wild animals, but also look like something we wouldn’t see in our own world.

Turg here is another mixel who you can’t tell what exactly he’s supposed to be. Is he a frog/toad? A hippo? A squid? Or some other fourth animal? He is truly a mixed up animal, a mixamal if you will.

MF Day #41: Chilbo

If I had to make a pick for the most underrated Mixel in the whole lineup, it would hands down be Chilbo. I don’t know why, but this is the one Mixel that stuck with me the most throughout all the years I’ve been a fan of the series.

Once again he has a design that perfectly captures his know-it-all personality, it’s simpler compared to most of the other mixels, but all of the details within work together to create this perfect design. He has a bluetiful use of the Frosticon color scheme, a cute sloth-like appearance, that defining icy brain, a cool pair of clawed hands, and of course those wonderful eyebrows! Some of his features even inspired my earliest creation of my sona, it was that impactful to me.

And out of all the Mixels characters with missed potential, Chilbo’s felt the most tragic. Despite having a fair amount of screentime in the QFTLM special, he barely had any lines of dialogue, which feels bizarre given how he’s said to be a very talkative character. That’s not to mention the fun three-way dynamic of all three Frosticon Cousins we could’ve had, with Chilbo being the intelligent straight man having to deal with the incompetence of his fellow frosty brothermen. But from what we got, the focus was mainly put on Snoof and Krog, while Chilbo felt left out.

A greatly wasted opportunity in my opinion…oh well, at least there’s the unlimited power of fan-made content that could deliver on what could’ve been.
