[id: Digital sketch of Izzy from OFMD and Starbuck from Moby Dick: a musical reckoning. Starbuck is sitting down, hands crossed. Izzy has his back to them , looking out in the distance. /end id]
We are currently in the preliminary rounds! Characters with only one submission are going head-to-head to whittle down the contestants before the proper battle begins.
Rules:
All characters must be from a musical associated with Dave Malloy
Matchups are decided based on number of submissions & a random number generator
Play nice! No harassment/bullying/etc
Please read the propaganda when voting, it's no fun if people only vote characters they've heard of :(
Think of each fight as a one-on-one duel, any skills and weapons are fair game, but no calling for backup!
Ties will result in the formation of teams
You may send extra propaganda in asks while a poll is still running
Preliminary Bracket:
We are going to be posting each round of the preliminaries a day at a time (so, four polls a day), as soon as they're up we'll link them all here! If you asked to be tagged, we'll tag people as soon as all the preliminaries are up.
actually thinking abt love in dave malloy’s work in general. like. love is everything physical that you feel and that you see and you have to believe in it or or doesn’t mean anything and it’s cosmic and it’s comets and looking through your telescope together and it’s making art together and when your hands touch over the piano and does he love you does he love me you’ve read his letters and it can be secret but it can also be in the tiny normal gestures that mean something different because you’re in love and the internet can make it just as much as it can break it and it’s being annoyed by each other but it doesn’t matter because you’re together and your lives are each other’s and i could be so good at love i could be so good at love i could be so good at love i could be so good at love
as a huge fan of nautical stuff and theatre we should agree to make more productions that take place on boats. because the possibilities are ENDLESS. above are images from Swept Away: A New Musical composed by the Avett Brothers and set designed by Rachel Hauck. apparently the entire ship ROCKS, at least from what I could tell from the clips available. actually breathtaking. more examples under the cut!
Moby Dick: A Musical Reckoning (set designed by Mimi Len)
Moby Dick, the LA Opera (set designed by Robert Brill)
havent posted in a while so i thought i might as well post this wip of a storyboard/animatic, as well as some ishmael design explorations.
i’ve been reading moby dick recently and i fell in love with the overall story, with all its flaws. it can be beautiful at some points but also pretty outright offensive (i guess this is expected from a story published in the 1800s)
anyway. the animatic will go along to the song “loomings” from an audio bootleg of moby dick: a musical reckoning back in 2019. (the sound quality is barebale, i can promise you that.) the song is based on first chapter of the book and the climax of the song is so fucking beautiful!!! hopefully i finish this soon so i can share the song and my love for this story.
