this post on ko munyeong x moon gangtae and the 5 love languages got me thinking about which ones each favors giving and receiving and I have so many feels that I want to discuss/scream about. so I ended up writing this drabble/word splat but am too lazy to write an actual fic, starting with words of affirmation...

having received ardent shouts of ‘love’ from ko munyeong very early in their annoyance-to-affection relationship, moon gangtae expected the declarations to continue once their feelings became obvious, mutual, and accepted. in a way, his expectations were correct. she was not shy in expressing what she truly thought of him at any given time: “you look delectable” when he wore a suit, “you have pretty eyes” when he wore the blue shirt that reflected the sky into his eyes, “wow” when he lifted up his shirt to wipe the sweat off his brows revealing his abs, “I want all of you” when she let him have all of her in his arms. desire was something she easily expressed, as was annoyance, and anger, and even amusement. but sometimes, she smiled at him like she was wary of happiness, laughed like she couldn’t believe such a genuine sound could come from her chest, and he feels his heart open up to make more space for all that she is becoming.

it was during that night of munyeong’s failed drunken attempt to seduce him into her bed that he realized it was going to be him saying those three words first. when she loosened her tongue with alcohol and revealed to him all the swear words she has mastered and that having sangtae and gangtae with her, she liked; she liked very much. her use of “enjoyment” rather than “happiness” to describe her feelings even during the time when she’s the most loose and honest. it reminded him of that moment in his house when he asked her to read his expression and she avoided the topic of emotions, and, when he called her out, snapped at him that she’s not autistic. it’s not that she doesn’t understand or know or have these feelings, but rather she’s hesitant to acknowledge them lest they become more concrete and tangible and prone to being taken away.

he doesn’t mind being the first to tell her that he loves her. he doesn’t mind speaking to her, to anyone, of his affections for her anytime anywhere. as someone who is used to verbally processing and expressing his emotions, gangtae considers himself lucky to love someone who is bold in asking for and seeking comfort in his words of affirmation. munyeong asks of him one day while they were tending to the garden the brothers has started in their recent unemployment, “you have to say ten good things to me every day so I will grow beautifully.” 

“what are you, a tomato plant?” 

“say it. hurry. or else i’m going to grow into a poison ivy vine and kill you.” 

so gangtae tells her everyday and again when she needs to hear it: “you’re pretty with short hair. you’re pretty with long hair. you are so strong. i am so proud of you. i like hugging you because you’re small and soft in my arms. i like it when you rely on me even if it’s just to get some quail eggs. i like that you are friends with my brother. you’re so cute when you’re playful. i admire that you have entire universes in your mind and that you have the talent and kindness share them with me and with the world. i love you.”

im losing it

munyeong thought gangtae was upset at her for not keeping her promise of visiting her dad and then promptly tried to fix this by visiting her dad which lead to her spiraling and walking home in the rain, and gangtae think it’s his fault 

just thinking abt the way they show their care for each other even though it’s so misguided!! like munyeong didn’t correctly identify what causes gangtae to be upset, but she was trying the best she could to fix it even though it made her uncomfortable and put her at risk! gangtae couldn't stop thinking about munyeong walking home and felt responsible, as if his words caused her to spiral

cant sleep. thinking about the way munyeong followed gangtae while he was dissociating and depressed, to the point that she hurt her ankle and gangtae didn’t even turn around to help her. and then for gangtae say “stop following me” and munyeong to say “but we go hand in hand. we’re supposed to be together” 

and it’s like depression is a selfish lover. and sometimes your life partner is so low that no one can save them except themselves, and all you can do is say “im staying right here next to you. im going to stay here by your side, through thick and thin”
